Big Picture

West Indies will press for a 2-0 win, having come back hard against Bangladesh in the final two sessions of the Mirpur Test and seizing the momentum. Though they weren’t defending a big total, with enough overs for the opposition to chase it down, they were tactically far ahead of Bangladesh when it mattered. The use of the short delivery worked wonders, as Tino Best completed a maiden five-for in Tests with some hostile pace and by bowling bouncers at well. Ravi Rampaul’s control and Sunil Narine’s performance in the second innings, together with debutant Veerasammy Permaul’s accuracy, made taking 20 wickets possible. With the bat, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Kieran Powell and Denesh Ramdin got big runs, and the failures of Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels didn’t have a serious impact on the team. The major highlight for Bangladesh was debutant offspinner Sohag Gazi’s returns of nine wickets in the game. Rubel Hossain fought back in the second innings and Shahadat Hossain and Shakib Al Hasan had their moments, but they were inconsistent.Bangladesh, however, will be watchful of how their batsmen react after their capitulation in the second innings. They posted their first-ever 500-plus score, in the first innings, and even gained a small lead, but the chase went poorly. Just as Bangladesh faced the prospect of a Test victory, their feet froze and West Indies took advantage. Bangladesh’s plan would be to make West Indies work hard for wickets, but it still could be a stiff task on a track on which not a lot of cricket has been played recently.

Players to watch

Mahmudullah got a half-century in the first innings but his effort in the second stood out. He withstood a barrage of short balls from Best, was hit thrice in the space of two overs, but ultimately replied with a hooked six. He survived for 83 minutes, as was the need of the hour, and made his team’s highest score in the second innings.Chris Gayle will be expected to come back hard against Bangladesh, after he was thwarted by spin in the first innings and pace in the second in Mirpur. A fast start with his strokeplay could diffuse Bangladesh’s plans.

Pitch and conditions

By accounts from players and the scorecards of the last two first-class matches played here, the pitch at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna has generally been batting-friendly but is likely to offer turn on the last two days. The weather has been unpredictable over the last two weeks. There was a cold spell earlier this month but ahead of the Test it has been hot and sultry with a threat of rain due to a depression at the Bay of Bengal nearby.

Team news

Tamim Iqbal had an elbow injury but passed a fitness test on Tuesday and will play the second Test. The team management may likely replace Junaid Siddique, the other opener, with Nazimuddin on the account of the former’s struggle against the short ball and problems with slip-catching. Still, one will not be too surprised if Tamim and Anamul Haque, the batsman flown in as his cover, go out to open.Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Nazimuddin/Anamul Haque, 3 Shahriar Nafees, 4 Naeem Islam, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Mahmudullah (vice-capt), 8 Nasir Hossain, 9 Sohag Gazi, 10 Shahadat Hossain, 11 Rubel Hossain.Darren Sammy has hinted at continuing with the same line-up that played in the first Test. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who didn’t field for much of the previous game, is fit, and the likelihood of using Fidel Edwards as a third pace bowler has diminished due to Permaul’s impressive debut.West Indies (possible): 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Kieran Powell, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 6 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 7 Darren Sammy (capt), 8 Sunil Narine, 9 Ravi Rampaul, 10 Veerasammy Permaul, 11 Tino Best

Stats and trivia

  • Khulna will be Bangladesh’s seventh Test venue.
  • The last time West Indies won four Tests in a row was between January and April of 1993 when they beat Australia home and away.

Quotes

“We had a plan to play session-by-session, take one day at a time without keeping the result in mind, although we had one poor session and that cost us the match. I hope we can do this in the Khulna Test, as it will help us in gaining consistency.”

“Last year we drew the first Test, this year we won it. We have one more Test to go and we’d do everything to win this Test match. We want to win the series 2-0.”

Morkel gives South Africa another No.1

Morne Morkel has replaced Graeme Swann as the No. 1 ranked bowler in one-day internationals

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Oct-2011Morne Morkel, the South Africa fast bowler, has replaced Graeme Swann as the No. 1 ranked bowler in one-day internationals, giving South Africa the top spot in five categories across Tests and 50-over cricket.Morkel, who took 4 for 22 in the second ODI against Australia in Port Elizabeth, has climbed four places while Swann has slipped two after a disappointing series against India where he took just two wickets in four matches. However, to highlight how frequently the rankings can shift, Morkel could lose his position after the deciding ODI against Australia if he does not perform. For now, Morkel’s elevation puts him alongside team-mate Hashim Amla who occupies the top batting position in ODIs. Jacques Kallis is currently the No.1 Test batsman and allrounder while Dale Steyn is the top Test bowler. South Africa have not played Test cricket since January but will resume five-day action next month with a two-Test series against Australia before facing Sri Lanka either side of Christmas.Elsewhere in the one-day rankings two contrasting players share third place in the batting table with MS Dhoni and Jonathan Trott level on points. Dhoni was named Man of the Series against England having not been dismissed in any of the five matches and he has now set a new India record of runs scored between dismissals.Trott, meanwhile, made England’s top score during their whitewash with an unbeaten 98 in Mohali and he has risen three places in the rankings in his final international outings of 2011 during which he was named ICC Cricketer of the Year. The next best England batsman is Alastair Cook at No. 36, while Kevin Pietersen is at 47.Two India spin bowlers, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, played key roles in the England series and their performances are recognised by substantial improvements in their standings. Ashwin has entered the top 20 while Jadeja has gained 12 places to be two points away from a new career-best mark.Another significant mover is Brendan Taylor, the Zimbabwe captain, whose impressive series against New Zealand where he scored 310 runs including two centuries has boosted him 18 places to No. 17.

Waqar wants improved fielding

Waqar Younis, the Pakistan coach, has said the team will focus on fielding ahead of the upcoming series against South Africa in the UAE

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Oct-2010Waqar Younis, the Pakistan coach, has said the team will focus on fielding ahead of the upcoming series against South Africa in the UAE, which starts on October 26. The Pakistan squad will have a week-long preparatory camp ahead of the series.”We have set up a six-day camp from October 17 before departing for the UAE on October 23,” Waqar told the newspaper. “Although I am placing emphasis on the three departments of batting, bowling and fielding – fielding, once again is our highest priority as it has never been good.”Pakistan’s catching during the recent tour of England was abysmal, with plenty of simple chances being put down. Waqar was also unhappy with the level of fielding in the Faysal Bank T-20 competition in Lahore this week. “I see weak fielding in the ongoing domestic Twenty20 championship as well, even though it is a vital aspect of the game, and if you start working on it at the lower levels it can help you at the top at the international level.”Already reeling from the spot-fixing crisis that has deprived them of three key players, Pakistan’s build-up to the series had further trouble after Waqar and Shahid Afridi, the limited-overs captain, complained that the selection committee hadn’t consulted them before picking the squad.Pakistan’s chief selector, Mohsin Khan, defended the decision by saying it was not in the PCB’s constitution that the captain and coach needed to be consulted for the selection of the squad.

Narsingh Deonarine ton carries Guyana to semis

A round-up of the second day’s action – or lack of due to rain – at the President’s Cup

Cricinfo staff31-Oct-2009

Narsingh Deonarine: To Guyana’s rescue•The Nation

Narsingh Deonarine’s unbeaten century boosted Guyana into the semi-finals of the WICB President’s Cup with a seven-wicket success over Barbados at Albion. Chasing 232, Guyana were indebted to Deonarine’s 102 which sealed the win with 6.5 overs remaining out of an allotted 49.Deonarine put on 133 off 114 balls for the third wicket with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (38*), the pair having come together in the 24th over when the captain Ramnaresh Sarwan chipped a return catch to Dwayne Smith. There were no further hiccups, however, as Deonarine and Chanderpaul battered the bowlers and move Guyana to eight points following their first-round victory over the Leeward Islands on Wednesday.Barbados had began drastically after Ryan Hinds opted to bat. Martin Nurse went second ball of the innings, nicking Esuan Crandon behind for 0. Hinds (31) and Kirk Edwards (32) added 68 for the second wicket to restore order but Hinds’ dismissal, bowled by Crandon in the 16th over, opened the sluice gates. Barbados proceeded to lose six wickets for 52 runs to crash to 120 for 7 in the 32nd over. Suliemann Benn, the West Indies left-arm spinner, swung his way to 39 from 40 balls in an 82-run stand with Khalid Springer (45 from 37) that got Barbados past 200. The pair were dismissed within nine balls of each other and the tail went cheaply.Barbados, on four points, will face Leewards in their final preliminary round match on Saturday in an attempt to claim one of the three remaining semi-final berths. In a rain-hit match at the Providence Stadium, the two bottom-placed teams were hit with another road block. Leeward Islands were 37 for 0 after six overs against West Indies Under-19, out of which 31 came off Kieron Powell’s bat, when rain stopped play. The showers continued and play was called off at 2:00pm. The game was abandoned as a no-result. The Leewards and West Indies U-19s were already coming off losses in Wednesday’s opening matches and remain stuck at the bottom of the points tables with one point each.

Jamaica’s shot at sealing a place in the semi-finals look slim after their match against Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) was washed out at Georgetown. Persistent rain forced an abandonment just 12.1 overs into CCC’s innings after they opted to bat. With the score 41 for 2, the players were hurried into shelter and the rain continued through the afternoon, leaving the umpires Clyde Duncan and Dalton Holder to call off play at 1:45 pm. Jerome Taylor’s two wickets in the first over had boosted Jamaica but a 37-run partnership between Romel Currency and Nekoli Perris put matters back on course before the deluge. Both teams received a point for the abandonment, leaving CCC with four points following win over the Windward Islands on Wednesday, and Jamaica with a single point after they were beaten by Trinidad & Tobago in their opening match.Rain played spoilsport at West Demerara as well, where no play was possible for Trinidad & Tobago and the Windward Islands.

Khawaja: 'I was just getting Bumrah-ed'

Australia opener hails “the toughest bowler I have ever faced”

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Jan-20251:18

Manjrekar: ‘Bumrah, a bowler without a weakness’

Usman Khawaja came into the Border-Gavaskar Trophy not too worried about facing Jasprit Bumrah. In fact, Bumrah hadn’t been able to dismiss him across the seven Test innings they had faced each other previously, and the Australia opener reckoned the fast bowler gets easier to navigate as you play him more. But after six dismissals to the India fast bowler across eight innings where he faced him, Khawaja admitted he “was just getting Bumrah’ed”.Related

  • What did victory over India tell us about Australia's present and future?

“To be honest, I was just getting Bumrah-ed,” Khawaja told ABC Sport after Australia regained the BGT in Sydney. “It was friggin’ tough work. It was tough work. People were asking me ‘what’s going on?’ I’m being honest, I’m just getting Bumrah-ed.”Bumrah finished the series as the highest wicket-taker, with 32 scalps at an average of 13.06 and was duly named Player of the Series. He could bowl only nine innings though, and he couldn’t take the field during Australia’s chase at the SCG after experiencing back spasms during their first innings. In Bumrah’s absence, Australia sealed the win with six wickets to spare, and Khawaja admitted that Australia felt more confident on a spicy pitch when they saw that Bumrah wasn’t on the field.”You never want to see anyone injured and it’s a shame he was, but thank God for us. Because today would have been an absolute nightmare facing him on that wicket,” Khawaja said.”And you can see what a big part of their team he was. And everyone felt it. As soon as we didn’t see Bumrah out there, we had this sense of feeling that we’ve actually got a chance here.”Khawaja said Bumrah is “the toughest bowler I’ve ever faced” and hailed the fast bowler’s improvement from his first tour of Australia in 2018-19.”He was always good, he was a very good bowler [in 2018]. But he’s been something different this year,” Khawaja said. “It looked like he’s just got his tail up.”The wickets have definitely helped him, but he’s six years more mature, he’s a better bowler, he understands his skills. He understands who he’s bowling to and he has different plans for everyone.”I always feel like no matter how good a bowler is, they’ll always give me something to score off. I just never felt like I could score off him. It just felt so hard. I’ve never found someone so hard to score off and get off strike as Bumrah and you always feel like he’s got a wicket ball up his sleeve.”

Runs for de Kock, but NZ clinch rain-hit warm-up in Thiruvananthapuram

New Zealand had made 321 for 6 on the back of half-centuries from Devon Conway and Tom Latham

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Oct-2023Rain denied a persistent Quinton de Kock from taking South Africa over the line against New Zealand in Thiruvananthapuram.Batting first, New Zealand had made 321 for 6 on the back of half-centuries from Devon Conway and Tom Latham. In reply, South Africa made their way to 211 for 4, with de Kock and David Miller both looking in good touch, before the rain put a premature end to the game, with South Africa seven runs short according to DLS.Apart from the win, New Zealand will be happy with Kane Williamson, who continued his road back to full sharpness, taking the field after scoring a 51-ball 37. However, he will not play in the tournament opener against England. Both teams tried out 17 bowlers in total. Even keeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen got a chance to roll his arm but it was the strike bowlers who made breakthroughs for both teams.Trent Boult blew Reeza Hendricks’ pads in the first over and had him lbw. Matt Henry joined Boult to trouble de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen, his new partner, but the batters saw off the spell and took on the bowlers who followed.Seven of the eight boundaries between the seventh and the 14th overs were scored by van der Dussen, en route to a half-century. His aggression allowed de Kock to settle in despite a slow start. But the 72-run stand was cut off when van der Dussen had a swipe across the line, off Mitchell Santner’s bowling, and was caught at cover.De Kock smacked five fours and a six off Santner and Ish Sodhi in successive overs to get going. Aidan Markram then smacked Glenn Phillips for two fours but Sodhi had Markram miscue an inside-out shot to deep cover to end the 37-run stand.Klaasen and de Kock regularly hit boundaries off Sodhi and Rachin Ravindra, and also kept taking singles to move along at a brisk pace. De Kock soon brought up his fifty as well, but Boult returned and immediately struck, going around the wicket to dismiss Klaasen.Miller and de Kock kept South Africa afloat. De Kock was drained by the heat and suffered some body blows; a bouncer from Mitchell hit him on the head but he carried on. He and Miller both looked comfortable against the spinners, regularly clearing the boundaries. The game seemed to be heading towards a tight finish before the rain interruption.Earlier in the day, Conway stood tall after New Zealand chose to bat. He settled in with Williamson and Glenn Phillips offering support as the duo added 218 runs. New Zealand did not lose a wicket between the fifth and 40th over, when Phillips chopped on a yorker outside off from Marco Jansen.Conway drove, pulled and cut his way through to a fifty. Williamson was also fluent with his boundary-scoring shots during his stay. Williamson retired hurt at the end of the 20th over and Conway after the 26th.As Latham and Phillips rebuilt, rain came in with New Zealand on 171 off 29 overs. The pair settled back after the break with Phillips taking on anything too short or too full. Latham reached his fifty in the 37th over. The acceleration was cut off by Jansen, who removed both batters in the 40th over. In total, 10 of New Zealand’s batters managed to get a hit. Mitchell’s 16-ball 25, with support from Santner, earned New Zealand 78 runs in the last 10 and took them to 321.

Chris Rushworth claims seven as Leus du Plooy, Anuj Daj fightback is thwarted

First five-wicket haul of season for veteran justifies Durham’s decision to bowl first

ECB Reporters Network11-Jul-2022Durham 2 for 0 trail Derbyshire 283 (du Plooy 122, Dal 90, Rushworth 7-44) by 281 runsChris Rushworth marked his 36th birthday with his first five-wicket haul of the LV= Insurance County Championship season, taking figures of seven for 44 as Durham bowled out Derbyshire for 283 on day one of their clash at Seat Unique Riverside.Rushworth was irrepressible after Durham opted to bowl first in sweltering conditions. He rose to the occasion to hold the visitors in check with a perfect line and length, despite a brilliant century from Leus Du Plooy. After a flurry of wickets, the left-hander rebuilt the Derbyshire innings with a stand of 166 with Anuj Dal, who produced a fine knock of 90, to frustrate the home side. However, Rushworth returned with the new ball in the evening session to turn the momentum of the day with three wickets before debutant Stanley McAlindon cleaned up the tail to bowl out Derbyshire, leaving Du Plooy stranded on 122 not out.Durham captain Scott Borthwick made a bold decision to field first in the heat and sunshine at the Riverside. But Rushworth would reward his skipper and his team-mates with his best first spell of the term. The seamer found life in the pitch to trouble the Derbyshire openers, removing Luis Reece lbw with an inswinger for five. Tom Mackintosh on debut behind the stumps then produced a brilliant diving catch to his left to hand Rushworth his second wicket as Billy Godleman departed for only three.Durham capitalised on the absence of Shan Masood, who left the Derbyshire camp to join up with the Pakistan Test squad, reducing the visitors to 30 for three when Ben Raine found Wayne Madsen’s outside edge. Brooke Guest and Du Plooy stabilised matters before lunch with a stand of a 55, stymieing Durham’s charge.A refreshed Rushworth broke the partnership by bowling Guest for 29 and then cleaned up Hilton Cartwright’s off-stump for a first-ball duck. Dal survived the hat-trick ball and endured a close shave on seven, narrowly missing his stumps with an inside edge.Du Plooy and Dal would dig in for the rest of the session as the pitch flattened out in the baking heat at Chester-le-Street. Chances were at a premium for the home side amid solid batting led by Du Plooy, who posted his fourth half-century of the campaign. Dal was more fluent at the other end, passing fifty for the fourth time of the season from only 79 balls with six boundaries to his name. The two players worked their way past the century partnership, becoming the first Derbyshire players to muster a hundred stand for the sixth wicket against Durham. Du Plooy’s hard work was rewarded when he notched his first century of the campaign by cutting Liam Trevaskis to the fence, but Dal could not join his team-mate with three figures following the arrival of new ball.Rushworth bounded in from the Lumley End and claimed two wickets in two balls for the second time of the day. Dal could only fend an outside edge through to Mackintosh before Alex Thomson suffered the same fate. McAlindon would end the day with two moments to remember on his first-class debut, removing Sam Conners to claim his first scalp and Toby Pettman to end the visitors’ innings.

Mohammad Abbas secures Hampshire move for first two months of County Championship season

Pakistan seamer will form new-ball partnership with Kyle Abbott

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Mar-2021Hampshire have announced the signing of Pakistan seamer Mohammad Abbas for the first two months of the County Championship season.Abbas will form part of an imposing new-ball partnership alongside Kyle Abbott, who will be the club’s other overseas player in the early months of the season following the expiration of his Kolpak status. Hampshire have previously confirmed that Fidel Edwards will not return to the club, following five seasons as a Kolpak signing.Abbas has previously spent two seasons in county cricket, taking 79 Championship wickets at 20.67 for Leicestershire between 2018 and 2019. He had signed for Nottinghamshire for the 2020 season, but his deal was cancelled due to the pandemic.Giles White, the club’s director of cricket, said: “We are really excited about the arrival of Mohammad Abbas. He is a bowler of the highest quality and to secure him for an early-season Championship stint is a huge boost to the squad.”He joins Kyle Abbott as our second overseas signing and we are hopeful that they form a formidable pairing in early season conditions.”Hampshire had signed Nathan Lyon as their overseas player for the County Championship in 2020, but his move never materialised due to Covid-19’s effect on the English summer. The club offered him the chance to return this year, but he declined their approach. They have also been strongly linked with a move for Kyle Jamieson, though his availability is now very limited on account of New Zealand’s involvement in the World Test Championship final, their Test series in England, and his stint at Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.

Eoin Morgan feels World Cup bounce after KKR swoop with big bid

He will be joined by his young England team-mate Tom Banton, who was picked up for approx £100,000

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Dec-2019After a decade of involvement with the IPL, Eoin Morgan has felt the full benefit of being a World Cup-winning captain after landing his biggest payday yet ahead of the 2020 event.Morgan, who entered this year’s IPL auction at a base price of INR 1.5 crore, was snapped up by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 5.25 crore (£563,000 approx.) – more than twice the figure that Kings XI Punjab paid for him when he last appeared in the event in 2017. He will be joined there by his young England team-mate Tom Banton, who was picked up in the later rounds for INR 1 crore (approx £100,000).Morgan’s acquisition by Knight Riders brings him back to a franchise he represented for three years from 2011 to 2013. There, he will be reunited with his close friend Brendon McCullum, the former New Zealand captain and current franchise head coach, who was instrumental in driving the bidding war, amid close interest from Delhi Capitals.Morgan has been one of English cricket’s most regular attendees at the IPL – he played six matches in the 2010 season, after being bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for £134,000, and also featured for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2015, for £100,000.His overall IPL record has not been especially impressive – 854 runs in 52 matches at 21.35, and a strike-rate of 121.13 – and he went unsold in the 2017 and 2018 auction. However, his stock rose exponentially during the World Cup, where he led England to victory in the final against New Zealand at Lord’s, having impressed with the bat along the way.

Against Afghanistan in the group stage of the competition, Morgan slammed a world-record 17 sixes in his 71-ball 148, and he also sealed victory in the semi-final against Australia with 45 not out from 39 balls. He’s been in free-flowing form since the tournament ended too, striking 91 from 41 balls in a T20I victory over New Zealand in Napier last month, before impressing for Delhi Bulls in the Abu Dhabi T10.However, despite the cool head that Morgan displayed in the crunch moments of England’s World Cup campaign – not least in the final itself – he will not be called upon to lead Knight Riders, with Dinesh Karthik already confirmed in the role by McCullum.”Dinesh is definitely our captain,” McCullum told reporters at the IPL auction in Kolkata. “We wanted to get as much experienced leadership as possible and Eoin Morgan is one of the very best leaders going around currently in our game.”A perfect lieutenant for Dinesh Karthik and he [Morgan] will also fill the gap at No. 4. He is in the form of his life. He is going to be a fine asset coming back to KKR.”Morgan was not the biggest earner among England players, however. Sam Curran, who was bought by Kings XI Punjab for £800,000 in the 2018 auction, attracted another big pay-day as Chennai Super Kings swooped for £590,000.Jason Roy and Chris Woakes – who went for INR 7.4 crore in the 2017 auction – both met their base prices as they were picked up for £160,000 each. Mark Wood, however, went unsold, having struggled with injury since picking up a side strain in the World Cup final. There were also deals later in the day for Chris Jordan, who went to Kings XI Punjab for £324,000, and Tom Curran, picked up by Rajasthan Royals for £108,000.

Tom Westley, Simon Harmer tons build dominant Essex position

Centuries from Simon Harmer and Tom Westley put Essex in complete command against Surrey at the Kia Oval, where the champions ended day two facing their first defeat of a triumphant season

ECB Reporters Network25-Sep-2018
ScorecardCenturies from Simon Harmer and Tom Westley put Essex in complete command against Surrey at the Kia Oval, where the champions ended day two facing their first defeat of a triumphant season. At stumps, Surrey were 88 for 1 in their second innings – still 322 runs behind – after Harmer, Westley and Adam Wheater, with a punchy 68 from 105 balls, had swept Essex to 441 for 8 declared.Mark Stoneman, dropped on 5 off Matt Quinn by replacement keeper Michael Pepper – who dived across first slip but only succeeded in deflecting the edge into M Vijay’s left knee – moved confidently to 41 not out from 63 balls although Rory Burns gave Jamie Porter a simple return catch on 21 when Surrey’s captain attempted to flip a short ball to leg but got a leading edge instead.Harmer and Wheater added an unbroken 159 in 36 overs in the afternoon session, establishing a new seventh-wicket record for Essex against Surrey and piling on the agony for the runaway Specsavers County Championship winners after Westley’s dismissal in the last over before lunch.Wheater, however, had to retire hurt during the tea interval after failing to shake off a nasty blow to his right thumb, suffered four balls before the interval when former South Africa fast bowler Morne Morkel made one rear from a good length on a pitch that otherwise played much better than on the opening day.Harmer then saw Porter and Sam Cook both fall to the persevering Jade Dernbach, who finished with a creditable 4 for 95, before swiping off spinner Amar Virdi for six just over the head of the long-on fielder to reach only his second first-class century. The declaration came soon afterwards, with Harmer unbeaten on 102 from 156 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes – both off the suffering Virdi.Essex, the 2017 champions, were already in charge of the match when starting day two 130 runs in front at 197 for 2, but they continued to build a position of utter dominance after Westley quickly completed the 20th first-class hundred of his career.Resuming on 93, Westley took just 12 balls to go to three figures and went on to 134 before tickling a leg-side ball from Rikki Clarke to keeper Ben Foakes to leave Essex 282 for 6. But the afternoon session belonged to Wheater and Harmer as they crushed any realistic hopes of an unlikely Surrey fightback.Essex, who bowled out Surrey for a mere 67 in early bowler-friendly conditions, lost both Dan Lawrence and Ravi Bopara in the second day’s opening hour. Lawrence was leg-before to Clarke having battled through 77 balls to make 17, and Bopara had scored just 8 when he attempted a paddle-sweep against Virdi – in the last over before the second new ball was taken at 238 for 4 – and was bowled behind his pads. But Westley stood firm, joined in a fifth-wicket stand of 40 by Ryan ten Doeschate before the Essex captain edged Dernbach to gully to go for 27. When he was finally dismissed, Westley had batted for almost six and a half hours, facing 282 balls and hitting 21 fours.Wheater hit eight fours and a six over long-on off Virdi, but was replaced as keeper by substitute Pepper when Surrey batted again. And Essex needed another replacement when seamer Cook could not pass a concussion test – following a blow on his batting helmet during his brief innings, facing Dernbach – and so called up Matt Coles to deputise.
