'If there are no setbacks this week, he’ll be back' – San Diego FC's Mikey Varas says Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano could return for Game 2 vs. Portland Timbers

Hirving “Chucky” Lozano could be nearing a return for San Diego FC after missing recent matches due to an internal issue. The Mexican international was left out of the squad for Sunday’s 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers in the MLS Cup Playoffs opener, marking his second consecutive absence. Head coach Mikey Varas indicated that Lozano may be available for the second game of the best-of-three series, provided his progress continues smoothly throughout the week.

Getty Images Sport"Hirving’s response in training has been very positive"

Snapdragon Stadium saw a packed crowd of over 30,000 fans for San Diego's 2-1 win as the Western Conference’s top seed took the first step toward advancing. The series shifts to Providence Park on Nov. 1 for Game 2. Varas clarified postmatch that Lozano’s omission should not be interpreted as a sign that the matter remains unresolved.

“That’s not an indication,” Varas said. “As we’ve said, it was a situation we’ve been handling internally, evaluating it day by day, week by week. Hirving’s response in training has been very positive. He’s been working incredibly hard and showing real commitment to getting back into the squad. We communicated to him before this game that if there are no setbacks this week, he’ll be back.”

AdvertisementGettyTensions reportedly arose earlier this month

According to a report from , Lozano was involved in a heated verbal exchange following his substitution at halftime during a match against the Houston Dynamo earlier in October. Days after the incident came to light, the winger issued a public apology on Instagram.

“I’m a passionate and competitive person who always wants to give everything for the team,” he wrote. “Sometimes that same intensity can lead to reactions that don’t reflect who I am or the respect I have for those around me. I didn’t react the right way, and I’ve taken responsibility, addressed it, and moved forward.”

Varas also denied that Lozano reacted poorly when informed he would not be included in the lineup.

“Hirving took it with a lot of respect and as a professional,” the coach added. “It has never been a distraction – the group has remained fully focused on our goals. We spoke to him beforehand, and his response has been very positive.”

Although not registered in the squad on Sunday, Lozano was seen in street clothes at Snapdragon Stadium, where he was also spotted speaking with San Diego Padres star and San Diego FC co-owner Manny Machado ahead of kickoff.

In his first MLS campaign, Lozano has delivered nine goals and 10 assists in 27 appearances, helping San Diego FC top the Western Conference in their inaugural season. Under Varas – a finalist for MLS Coach of the Year – the expansion side set new league benchmarks for most wins (19) and most points (63) by a debutant team.

If Lozano returns in Portland, he could play a decisive role – either in clinching the series or forcing a dramatic Game 3 at home.

Sky journalist shares "big" Crystal Palace news as Liverpool gifted Guehi boost

Following Giovanni Leoni’s season-ending injury blow, Liverpool have been handed a key boost in pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Leoni injury hands Liverpool centre-back problem

For all of Liverpool’s excellent spending in the summer, they are now just one injury away from having two senior centre-backs at their disposal. The Reds went all in on Marc Guehi at the end of the transfer window, only for Crystal Palace to pull the plug on his move at the last moment. Now, Leoni’s ACL injury has left Arne Slot short of defensive options.

For now, it’s a problem that Liverpool must solve internally. Whether that sees Wataro Endo become an emergency centre-back or the likes of defender Rhys Williams receive the most unexpected recall is a question that, in truth, Slot will not want to face before January arrives.

Meanwhile, when the January transfer window does swing open, it will be all eyes on Guehi. Slot has not tried to hide how close Liverpool were to signing the Crystal Palace defender and another attempt could yet be on the cards.

Not Isak: Liverpool have wildcard Ekitike replacement & he's "prolific"

Liverpool have a talented young striker who could be a wildcard replacement for Hugo Ekitike.

ByDan Emery Sep 25, 2025

The Dutchman told reporters: “It would be ridiculous if I were to deny we were close to signing him. That is so out in the open. These things happen in football. We would have liked to have signed him, of course. If we feel we can strengthen the team, we never hesitate to do so.

The injury to Leoni has potentially added more urgency to Liverpool’s position and Sky Sports have just shared an update on the Reds’ pursuit of Geuhi.

Sky Sports share "big news" about Guehi

Live on air, Sky Sports journalist Tom White shared “big news” that Crystal Palace have accepted that Guehi’s time at the club is coming to an end – be it in January or at the end of his contract next summer.

White revealed: “We’ve got some news just into us. This is big news regarding Marc Guehi, because we are told that Crystal Palace realistically accept that Marc Guehi’s time at the club is coming to an end.”

The ball is now arguably in Liverpool’s court. The Reds could look to solve their centre-back problem by attempting a cut-price deal to sign Guehi just six months before his contract comes to an end this January. Or, they could wait to land the ultimate bargain at the end of his deal next summer.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard in line for Rangers return after Russell Martin is finally sacked after DISASTROUS 17-game spell that ended with beleaguered manager needing police escort

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is reportedly in line for a return to Rangers, with the Scottish Premiership giants in the market for a new coach after parting company with Russell Martin. Disgruntled supporters in Glasgow finally got their wish when seeing Martin’s disastrous reign brought to a close after just 17 games. The Gers could now turn to a familiar face in a bid to get the club back on track.

  • Dismal record: Why Martin was sacked by Rangers

Ex-MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton boss Martin only took charge at Ibrox over the summer. His ball-playing philosophy was considered to be a good fit for Rangers, but many fans had their doubts from the off. Those fears proved to be well founded, with Martin stumbling out of the blocks and never getting into his stride.

A 1-1 draw with Falkirk proved to be the final straw, with Rangers left languishing in eighth spot after picking up just eight points from seven top-flight fixtures this season. They have just one league win to their name and are already 11 points adrift of table-topping Hearts, while trailing Old Firm rivals Celtic by nine points.

    Police escort before departure confirmed

Furious Gers followers surrounded the team bus following another abject display at Falkirk, with Martin requiring a police escort as he made his way out of the stadium and into a waiting car. Speculation quickly surfaced regarding a managerial change.

That news was confirmed in a statement on Rangers’ , which read: “While all transition periods require some time, results have not met the club’s expectations. Assistant head coach, Matt Gill, and first-team coach, Mike Williamson, will also be departing. Russell and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them well for the future.”

  • Could title winner Gerrard return to Ibrox?

Martin won only five of his 17 matches at the helm, with more disappointing results being endured in European competition. His brand of football did not live up to expectations, with his approach considered to be passive, and the Gers board were left with little choice but to wield the axe.

A suitable successor to Martin is now being sought. According to , Gerrard is one of those being considered. The ex-England captain cut his coaching teeth with the Gers in 2018 and led them to the Premiership title in 2020-21 – their only championship win since 2011. He left in 2021 for Aston Villa.

However, his return to the Premier League did not play out as planned, with 40 games over 11 months spent in the West Midlands, while struggles were also endured in the Middle East with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq. Gerrard left his role there in January and has remained out of management ever since.

What McCoist said about Gerrard being reappointed

He is still held in high regard by Rangers supporters and would be welcomed back with open arms. Gers icon Ally McCoist told GOAL of a possible return to Glasgow for Gerrard when speculation first surfaced towards the end of last season: “Absolutely I could, yeah. Because of Steven’s success in winning the league at the club, it would be a possibility. He is obviously very well thought of after winning not just a title, but a very important title.”

McCoist has since said of Gerrard: “It’s absolutely vital that his next job is the right one. It didn’t quite work out at Villa or in Saudi. It’s similar to Frank Lampard – his move to Coventry has been crucial in getting his managerial career back on track. Steven’s in that same position. His next step needs to be spot on.”

Magassa upgrade: West Ham make contact to sign "box-crashing" midfielder

There is less than a week until the transfer window closes, and West Ham United still have plenty of work to do.

Graham Potter’s side have made a few exciting signings this summer, like El Hadji Malick Diouf and Kyle Walker-Peters, but as the last few games have shown, they need plenty more.

Moreover, while he ultimately underwhelmed during his time at the club, Edson Alvarez is now in Turkey, which has only made the Hammers’ need for midfield reinforcements that much more acute.

Luckily, they appear to be closing in on a deal for Soungoutou Magassa and, if reports are to be believed, they’re also making moves to bring in someone who’d be an even better signing.

West Ham United target better signing than Magassa

While their interest in Magassa likely stretches back further, reports of West Ham’s desire to sign the Frenchman started to emerge late last week.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Impressively, the Hammers have moved unusually quickly to secure the services of the AS Monaco ace, as he underwent his medical with the club yesterday and could be announced before the end of this week.

The 21-year-old looks like he’ll be a great addition to Potter’s squad, but it now looks like the East Londoners are already moving on to new targets, including someone who is even better than Magassa.

Paris St Germain's Ousmane Dembele in action with AS Monaco's SoungoutouMagassa

At least that is according to Graeme Bailey, who has claimed that West Ham are interested in Exequiel Palacios.

In fact, the journalist has revealed that the Irons have already made contact with Bayer Leverkusen to discuss a deal for the incredible Argentine.

Interestingly, while it is not clear how much the £83k-per-week ace would cost the club, the report states he could be available on loan, which makes him an even more enticing prospect.

It could still be a complicated deal to get over the line, but Palacios would be more than worth it, especially as he’s better than Magassa.

How Palacios compares to Magassa

It should be made clear that both Magassa and Palacios would be excellent signings for West Ham this summer, but there are a few reasons the latter would be that little bit better.

Exequiel Palacios for Bayer Leverkusen.

The first is his impressive experience, as, at 26 years old, he has spent far more time playing at the highest level and exceeding there.

For example, the Famaillá-born maestro has made 160 appearances for Leverkusen, 87 for River Plate and won 36 senior caps for Argentina.

Moreover, he has a genuinely spectacular trophy cabinet that includes a Bundesliga, a DFB-Pokal, two Argentine Cups, the Copa Libertadores, two Copa América titles, and a World Cup.

In contrast, the 21-year-old Monaco star has just an Olympic silver medal to his name, and while that may well change in time, he won’t be able to bring the same winning experience to the London Stadium.

The second, and arguably the most meaningful, reason the Leverkusen star would be the better signing this summer is that, when we take a look under the hood at their underlying numbers, he comes out on top in most relevant statistics.

These metrics include things like expected and actual non-penalty goals plus assists, key passes, shots, shot and goal-creating actions, passing accuracy, and so many more, all per 90.

In other words, while he might not be quite as defensively solid as the Frenchman, the “box-crashing” Leverkusen star, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, is an all-action midfielder who is as much of a goalscoring threat as a creative one.

Ultimately, West Ham should sign both Magassa and Palacios to give themselves the best chance of making this season a success; however, for our money, the latter would be the better addition of the two.

Chelsea ‘exploited’ Bayern Munich’s desperation with €16m Nicolas Jackson loan fee as former midfielder admits club ‘weren’t keen to buy him’

With Harry Kane now 32 years of age, Bundesliga champions at the Allianz Arena are aware of the need to start putting long-term plans in place when it comes to their No.9 berth. They had been hoping to prise 23-year-old frontman Nick Woltemade away from domestic rivals Stuttgart.

He has, however, joined Newcastle in a £65m ($88m) deal as Alexander Isak’s replacement. That deal left Bayern scratching around for a striker towards the end of the summer transfer window.

DID YOU KNOW?

They eventually settled on Jackson, with the Senegal international heading to Germany from Stamford Bridge. His loan deal includes a £70m ($95m) purchase option, which is a lot of money for a forward that is yet to register 20 goals across a single season in his career to date.

GettyWHAT HAMANN SAID

Dietmar Hamann doubts that clause will be triggered, with the ex-Bayern star – speaking in association with – telling GOAL: “Well, he’s got to play 40 games, and cup games don’t count. It’s only the league and the Champions League. If they were to get to the Champions League final, I think it’s 48 or 49 games. I think he misses five or six with the Africa Cup of Nations. So, he pretty much has to play every game. Which is a possibility, but it’s probably unlikely it’s going to happen.

“And I think Bayern Munich wanted to put that clause in because, I don’t want to say they weren’t keen to buy him, but they certainly weren’t keen to buy him for that amount of money, because obviously it’s a bit of a gamble. Got himself sent off a few times, a lot of yellow cards, got plenty of pace. But you need to see how he fits in, how he settles, the way he finds his place.

“It’s a lot of money for a one-year loan. But then again, Bayern Munich left it late and were desperate to bring a player in, and Chelsea obviously exploited it.”

Man City plot £147m bid to sign Chelsea ace with the same agent as Rico Lewis

Manchester City are now readying a £147 million bid to sign a “special” star who is rated highly by Pep Guardiola, according to a recent report.

Man City chasing two goalkeepers as Ederson’s future is in doubt

The Blues have already been very active in this transfer window, with Sverre Nypan being their latest capture. But things could soon be about to heat up even more at the Etihad, as focus switches to the goalkeeper department and the future of Ederson.

The Brazilian was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia even before the summer transfer window opened, but talk of that move has now gone quiet. But that doesn’t mean the goalkeeper is not going to leave City, as it’s emerged that Ederson wants to leave the Etihad to join Galatasaray this summer.

The Turkish giants are looking to sign Ederson and İlkay Gündoğan from the Premier League side, meaning the Blues are in the market for a new goalkeeper.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, City have already contacted Burnley about signing James Trafford. The Blues have a buyback price of £40 million, but they are trying to negotiate with the Clarets about lowering that fee.

As well as Trafford, City are willing to make a £52 million bid to sign Andriy Lunin from Real Madrid. The 26-year-old is said to be open to the idea of joining City, as he continues to be behind Thibaut Courtois in the pecking order. However, Real Madrid continue to see Lunin as a key part of their team, and they don’t want to lose the Ukraine star without a fight.

Man City plot £147m bid for Cole Palmer

As the Premier League side chase a new goalkeeper, according to a report from Spain, Man City are now set to submit a 170 million euros (£147 million) bid to sign Cole Palmer from Chelsea.

Chelsea'sColePalmercelebrates with the golden ball trophy

The Blues sold Palmer to Chelsea back in 2023 for a fee of £40 million, but now they are keen to reunite with the player, who Pep Guardiola admires and has praised for his “special quality” in front of goal.

Pep is said to be pushing City to bring Palmer back to the Etihad, and that is why the Premier League side are willing to spend nearly three times the amount they sold him for to get a deal done.

City are aware Palmer can make a huge difference to their attack, as the England international did at the Club World Cup this summer, but Chelsea do hold all the cards in this potential transfer tussle, as Palmer is under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033.

Lord's under scrutiny again as prices rise for India Test in 2025

Ticket prices for next year’s Lord’s Test against India have risen once again, despite Marylebone Cricket Club coming in for severe criticism for the cost of entry to this summer’s Test against Sri Lanka. For the first three days of the India Test, which begins on July 10 next year, the cheapest adult tickets on offer are restricted-view seats for £90 each (£20 for under-16s). Those with a clear line of sight are priced between £120-£175 (£40-£50 for under-16s).These prices compare unfavourably with last month’s Test against Sri Lanka, for which the cost of unrestricted views ranged from £115-£140 for adults and £15-£40 for concessions. That Sri Lanka contest concluded on the fourth day, for which just 9,000 tickets (approx one-third capacity) were sold. This was, in part, a reflection of England’s current fast-paced approach to Test cricket, with several recent contests being wrapped up well in advance of the final day.MCC came under further criticism for failing to offer any reduced-entry options until after tea on that fourth day, when the price fell to £15 for adults and £5 for under-16s. By then, however, there were just three Sri Lanka wickets left to fall, and the lack of advance notice further prevented a significant take-up.Related

Speaking in the aftermath of the Test, England’s stand-in captain Ollie Pope said that the subdued atmosphere had been noted by his team.”It was just like ‘jeez, it seems quiet today’,” he said. “I’m not sure if people expected the game to be done by day four or not. It’s a shame it wasn’t a full house because it was obviously a good day’s play.”Despite Guy Lavender, the chief executive and secretary of MCC, announcing that the club would be conducting a review into its fourth-day pricing policy, there is little concession for fans who hope to attend on that day for next year’s India Test. Under-16s will be admitted for £25, half the cost of the first three days, but tickets with a full view will still cost £90-£150.MCC’s rationale is that India are now the second-biggest draw in the English Test calendar, behind Australia, and the prices reflect the likely demand, which is in line with the policy adopted by other sports. The top-priced tickets for the 2023 Ashes Test were £170, which the club argues represents a below-inflation increase of £5.Lord’s is also due to host the World Test Championship final in June, which is currently on course to be contested between India and Australia, a rematch of the 2023 final at the Kia Oval. Tickets for that match are set between £70-130 for adults and £20-£50 for under-16s.England and India are also due to play a women’s ODI at Lord’s in 2025, for which adult tickets will be available for between £25 and £45. The men’s ODI against South Africa, on the other hand, will cost between £75 and £150.
