Keith Andrews reveals Brentford 'plan' for Newcastle-linked Yoane Wissa as transfer deadline nears

Brentford still expect Yoana Wissa to stay at the club beyond the summer deadline, despite the striker's efforts to force a transfer to Newcastle.

No movement in Wissa sagaStriker not currently playing matchesBrentford targeting reintegrationFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The Bees boss explained at a press conference on Monday that, even though he won't select Wissa for this week's Carabao Cup tie against Bournemouth, the overall target is for the unsettled striker to be reintegrated into the Brentford squad after the transfer deadline on September 1. Andrews added that he would have a different opinion on the matter if he thought that wasn't possible.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Having seen former Brentford boss Thomas Frank and ex-strike partner Bryan Mbeumo move on to bigger things, Wissa has been hoping to join Newcastle, who can offer Champions League football.

A £40 million ($54m) Magpies offer has been rejected and Wissa was, for a period, training separately, while he deleted mentions of Brentford from his Instagram account. The DR Congo international has since returned to group sessions, but still isn't being selected for matches at this time. Andrews, fomerly an assistant coach at the west London club, recently suggested that Wissa "owes" him for the work they did together that pushed his Premier League goal tally last season to 19.

WHAT ANDREWS SAID

"He won't be involved [against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup]. Again, it's just a decision based around what I feel is best for the group. The focus is on the group tomorrow. Yoane won't be involved," Andrew told reporters when the topic of Wissa's future was brought up.

"As far as I'm concerned, there's been no movement in any way and I fully expect Yoane to be here come next Tuesday [after the transfer deadline]. [Reintegration] is the plan. If I didn't think it would be, my stance on it would probably be different."

There is diminishing time for things to unfold. Brentford's valuation of Wissa is reported to fall between £50-60m ($68-81m), which means Newcastle remain far short. But an increase in their offer could in turn unlock the Alexander Isak transfer saga, with the Swedish striker refusing to play for the Magpies as he holds out for a move to Liverpool before next Monday.

Nerveless Hollie Armitage delivers Northern Diamonds a thrilling one-run win

Central Sparks short-circuit with four runs needed in final over at Edgbaston

ECB Reporters Network04-May-2024Northern Diamonds beat Central Sparks by one run in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in a thrilling match with the most sensational finish at Edgbaston.Chasing 216, Sparks entered the last over, bowled by Diamonds captain Hollie Armitage, needing just four to win with three wickets in hand, but lost all those three wickets to fall short on 215.Armitage ended with three for 40 after a delivering an ice-nerved final over which secured her side’s third victory in the competition this season.Diamonds chose to bat but were bowled out for 216 by a disciplined attack in which six bowlers took wickets. Former Sparks player Erin Burns offered most resistance with 49 (63 balls), supported by a late cameo by the in-form Abi Glen (31 not out, 27).A second-wicket century stand by Eve Jones (65, 98) and Abi Freeborn (49, 70) then gave the Sparks chase a strong platform but the last nine wickets fell for 103 – and the last five for just 15 – as Diamonds squeezed home in memorable fashion.Diamonds openers Lauren Winfield-Hill (28, 47 balls) and Emma Marlow (20, 38) supplied their side with a solid, if sedate, start with a stand of 45 from 74 balls. Both were skilfully uprooted by Katie George who shaped one away from Winfield-Hill to find the edge and bowled Marlow with an inswinging yorker.Armitage and Bess Heath also made a start but didn’t develop it. Armitage miscued Hannah Baker to mid off and Heath was brilliantly caught, one-handed, by Eve Jones in the same position off Grace Potts. Leah Dobson ladled Potts over mid-wicket for six but followed the get-in-then-get-out trend when she was yorked by Charis Pavely. As Jones juggled her attack cleverly to keep the batters thinking, Phoebe Turner chipped Pavely to mid off before Ria Fackrell struck twice in an over. Sophie Turner clipped to mid-wicket and Burns was caught at mid-off. The latter departed having held the innings together with a diligent 49 which included just two fours alongside six twos and 29 singles.Glen went to the crease averaging 92 with the bat this season and returned averaging 123 after striking two sixes in three balls off Issy Wong in a punchy ninth-wicket stand of 38 with Jess Woolstone.Burns soon damaged Sparks’ reply when she held a simple return catch from Pavely in the second over. Jones and Freeborn added 105 in 25 overs to lift their side into a promising position but the departure of Jones, who drove Sophie Turner to cover, triggered a collapse.Freeborn, called for a quick single by Courtney Webb, was run out by Sophie Turner’s throw. Katie Levick then struck twice in four balls. Ami Campbell reverse swept her first ball for four but chipped the third back to Levick. Webb fell lbw, sweeping and from 112 for one, Sparks had hit 145 for five.George (35, 55) and Bethan Ellis (23, 40) adding 56 in 14 overs but Ellis was caught at over with 16 still needed and the last over arrived with four required. Armitage had George caught at backward point off the first ball and, after a wide and a single, trapped Fackrell lbw with the fifth before Potts was run out off the last trying to scramble a bye for the tie.

'This team is a proper team' – McGrath praises Adelaide Strikers' fight to defend title

Tahlia McGrath lauded the all-round efforts of her team after Adelaide Strikers went back-to-back in the WBBL with a thrilling three-run victory in the final at Adelaide Oval.In a match that came down to the final ball, legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington held her nerve, having been lofted for six by Mikayla Hinkley, to bring the requirement down to five off two balls. But Hinkley fell agonisingly short of another six next ball, caught at long-off by Jemma Barsby, then Nicola Hancock couldn’t hit the boundary off the last that would have either won the match or earned a Super Over.Related

It was another display of the strength of Strikers’ bowling attack, which had been the best during the regular season, with Megan Schutt, Darcie Brown and McGrath herself all coming to the fore.”I’m going to use my quote from last year because it is the exact same, that was pretty bloody special,” she said at the presentation. “We called it last year. We were sitting in the changerooms, we said we’re not done, we want to go back-to-back. And we’ve had that fight, that determination all year.”This team is a proper team. There’s no individuals, no ego. We know our role. We show up, day in, day out and it’s a lot of fun playing with this team.”Speaking to Fox Cricket moments after the title was secured, Schutt admitted that Strikers’ total had looked under par but that McGrath had given them belief.”[I’m] a bit emotional to be honest. A few tears out there,” she said. “We set out a bold goal last year to go back-to-back and to achieve it is amazing. Running out there, 125 didn’t look good but Tahlia said it was a tricky pitch after batting for the longest. We were confident if we could bowl well we could defend it.”The final was played in front of 12,379 spectators which made it the second highest for a standalone WBBL fixture behind the 2021 final at Optus Stadium in Perth. And for the second year in a row, Wellington was entrusted with the final over.”I’m just overwhelmed with joy,” she told reporters. “Two years in row to have the faith to bowl the last over is pretty special. For me, I love those moments, especially when there’s a crowd behind me and my team are backing him. I was feeling [the pressure] from the 17th over, especially when the [power] surge was happening. Was looking at the scoreboard taking note of how many runs I needed to defend off the last and thought anything over 10 I had in the bag.”Brisbane Heat captain Jess Jonassen praised the performances of Strikers, terming them the “benchmark” of the competition, but looked crestfallen at not being able to chase 126.”To our girls, commiserations. I’m super proud of you all, we’ve worked very hard just to get to this moment,” she said. “Keep your heads up, I know it hurts, but we’ll be back bigger and better and stronger next year.”

Ollie Price rings up century before low-key day ends in a draw at Headingley

Yorkshire claim 13 points, Gloucestershire take 12 as rain intervenes

ECB Reporters Network28-Jun-2023Gloucestershire all-rounder Ollie Price completed an excellent maiden first-team century during an otherwise low-key final day at Headingley as their LV= Insurance County Championship clash with Yorkshire finished in a draw.Price moved from 97 not out overnight to reach three figures in the day’s first over as the visitors were bowled out for 464 in reply to a first-innings 550 for 9 declared during the first half of the morning.Price was last man out for 113 off 162 balls to on-loan left-arm spinner Dan Moriarty, who finished with 5 for 139 on Yorkshire debut.Yorkshire started their second innings with a lead of 86 and reached 200 for 6 in the 48th over when rain stopped play at 4.30pm, a lead of 286. No more play was possible.During a weather-affected third day, 22-year-old all-rounder Ollie Price shared a seventh-wicket partnership of 162 with his older brother Tom. This season, the brothers have both posted their maiden first-team centuries in this competition after new-ball seamer Tom did it in a draw at New Road in April. There was always the chance of a potential final day contrived finish, but that didn’t eventuate and both sides – relegated from Division One last year – remain closer to the bottom of the Division Two table than they are to the top.Yorkshire claimed 13 points and have won once from seven outings, while Gloucestershire took 12 and remain winless after eight.Price reached his milestone century with a leg-glanced boundary off the fifth ball of the day from George Hill’s seam. Two balls later, Matt Taylor edged seamer Dom Leech to first slip as Gloucestershire slipped to 425 for 9.Unfortunately for the smattering of spectators present on an overcast day at Headingley, this wasn’t a day’s play jam-packed with edge-of-your-seat action. But even though the game was drifting, Gloucestershire bowled well after lunch and took some scalps with them back to the South West. Adam Lyth also posted a pleasing 55 either side of lunch for Yorkshire.Given the position of both sides in the Division Two table and no threat of relegation, it was somewhat of a surprise that no adventure was shown.Wrapping up Gloucestershire’s innings, debutant Moriarty bowled a sweeping Price to secure his fifth wicket having joined Yorkshire from Surrey for the next month of Championship action.Lyth and Fin Bean shared a 73-run opening partnership at the start of Yorkshire’s second innings, with Bean caught behind pushing forwards at Zafar Gohar’s left-arm spin three balls into the afternoon for 38 including a pulled six off Ollie Price’s off-spin.Lyth pulled, reverse swept and drove before edging Zaman Akhter’s seam to first slip, ending a 56-run second-wicket stand with captain Shan Masood, who was bowled reverse sweeping at Gohar shortly afterwards, leaving Yorkshire at 135 for 3 in the 31st over.By this stage, the floodlights had been turned on at Headingley. For the game, it was very much lights out.A break for bad light and rain from just before 3pm accounted for the loss of seven overs before played resumed, allowing impressive Gohar to claim his third wicket when Dawid Malan was caught behind cutting for 20. That was the first of two wickets in five balls as Ben Charlesworth’s first ball accounted for Jonny Tattersall, caught at slip as Yorkshire fell to 161 for 5 in the 40th over.Gohar was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 63 from 18 overs, while Chris Dent struck with his third ball, getting Hill caught at slip with his left-arm medium pace. Dent celebrated in disbelief and patted Hill on the back as he departed, maybe owing to the fact he usually bowls part-time left-arm spin. It proved to be the fixture’s final ball.

Talks held: Man Utd now eye £40m+ speedster Liverpool want to replace Trent

Manchester United have now held talks with a “sensational” ace in the hope of beating Liverpool to his signature, according to a new report.

Man Utd keeping their transfer options open

As the summer transfer window gets ever closer, the transfer stories begin to heat up, and the Red Devils look to have their eyes set on numerous players who they hope will help improve Ruben Amorim’s team.

Hidden Man Utd boardroom figure set to help them win race to sign £100m gem

United believe they have an advantage over the other suitors.

Southampton’s Tyler Dibling is a player who has been on United’s radar for a while now, but it appears that the Premier League side are ready to step up their interest. It is being reported that United are now ready to sign Dibling, as other teams circle with interest, but they may have to pay as much as £100 million to get the young Englishman to Old Trafford.

Southampton's TylerDiblingin action with Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers and Ian Maatsen

The Red Devils see Dibling as someone who can become their new right wing-back as well as possibly operate as one of their number 10s.

But he is not the only player who is on their radar for becoming their new right wing-back, as the Red Devils are willing to battle Barcelona to win the race for Givairo Read, who currently plays for Feyenoord. He could cost United just £20 million this summer.

Man Utd battling Liverpool in the race to sign Frimpong

But if the 20-time Premier League champions are willing to pay more, then they may turn their attentions elsewhere. According to TBR Football, Man United have held talks over the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen but face a strong battle to secure his transfer.

Bayer Leverkusen's Nathan Tella celebrates scoring their second goal with JeremieFrimpong

Liverpool are keen on signing the Dutch international as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, but they now face competition from United and Man City, who have both held talks with Frimpong’s camp in recent weeks.

It doesn’t say how those talks went or what they were focused on, but it is another sign that Amorim wants to strengthen his right-side this summer.

United see Frimpong, who has been dubbed “sensational” by The Guardian columnist Dominik Diamond, as a perfect fit for their right wing-back role. Frimpong has played a similar role at Leverkusen, where he scored nine goals and recorded seven assists in 31 Bundesliga games last season as Leverkusen were crowned league champions.

Frimpong’s potential arrival at Old Trafford would see him replace Diogo Dalot, who has come under scrutiny throughout different times of this 2024/25 campaign. Frimpong’s ability to get up and down the pitch, as well as create and score goals, makes him the ideal player Amorim wants in his team, but it is going to cost the Red Devils £40 million plus to get a deal over the line.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Quansah made 25 appearances for Liverpool last season but just 13 of those were starts. He was behind captain Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in the pecking order, and as a result, fellow journalist David Lynch believes the 23-year-old is a 'genuine candidate for a departure'. Lynch adds that Premier League and Bundesliga sides are keen on the defender but £50m does seem a lot.

Milan's chaotic season ended with a disappointing eighth-place finish, depriving them of a place in next season's Champions League and Europa League. As the club scrambles to reset, their former legendary coach Capello has weighed in on who should lead the team next, naming Fabregas, not Antonio Conte or Massimiliano Allegri, as his top choice.

Capello’s endorsement of Fabregas signals a shift toward innovation rather than recycling established names. With Igli Tare likely to be named sporting director, Milan may be preparing for a fresh era, with current boss Sergio Conceicao expected to leave despite joining on an 18-month contract in December.

WHAT FABIO CAPELLO SAID

Capello praised Fabregas for his fresh ideas and the style of football he implemented at Como, telling : "It seems to me that things are a bit up in the air. I read about Massimiliano Allegri, who now seems closer to Napoli, in case Antonio Conte goes to Juventus… From the outside I see anything but clear ideas. And now it will be up to Tare to find a solution… If we have to exclude the usual names, I’d go with Fabregas. I like his football. At Como he showed interesting things. And he already seems sufficiently ready.”

Milan's first task is to confirm their new sporting director, with Tare expected to be announced imminently.
