Man Utd now determined to sign £200k-p/w ace this month after intense talks

Manchester United are looking to bolster their ranks on the cheap this January, and are now “determined to do everything possible” to land a new star for Ruben Amorim before the winter window closes, according to a fresh report.

Manchester United need goals

One of the biggest problems Manchester United have had this season to date is finding the back of the net. Currently 13th in the Premier League, the Red Devils have scored just 23 goals in 20 games, the fifth-lowest number in the top flight so far and less than half the number of goals scored by league leaders Liverpool.

In attack, Rasmus Hojlund has found the net just twice, while summer addition Joshua Zirkzee has three goals to his name but his future at the club remains in doubt after he was booed off by his own fans in the first half of their defeat to Manchester United.

Factor into that equation that fact that joint-top goalscorer Marcus Rashford (4) has not featured in the Premier League in over a month and could leave this window, and it is clear that Manchester United are crying out for a solution at the top of the pitch in a bid to move up into the top half of the table come the end of the campaign. Now, they may have found their man.

Manchester United stepping up move for "complete" attacker

That comes as Sky Sports report that the Red Devils are now “determined to do everything possible” to sign out-of-favour forward Randal Kolo Muani this winter, ahead of the likes of Chelsea and Juventus.

France'sRandalKoloMuanireacts

The former Eintracht Frankfurt forward has fallen down the pecking order at Paris Saint Germain and is free to leave this winter, either on loan or permanently.

And it appears to be a temporary move that most clubs are chasing, with the report suggesting that United are “considering a loan deal, ideally with an option to buy” in the summer, in a move that would likely see them have to cover a significant chunk of his £200,000 a week wages.

To that end, it is reported that “there have been very specific talks with his management” over personal terms, and that is set to intensify as “direct negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain are expected to follow” as they look to land the striker.

Still just 26-years-old, Kolo Muani has grabbed two goals and an assist this campaign in just 10 appearances, but has not been a part of the PSG squad for any of their last four games.

Though he has struggled in the French capital, Kolo Muani is loved by his teammates in the France national team squad. Matteo Guendouzi dubbed him “one of the best strikers in Europe” while Antoine Griezmann labeled him a “complete” player who can “score off the dribble, score with headers” and will always “look for space in behind”.

Despite United pushing to complete a deal, it is far from sealed yet, with several clubs also still in the race. According to the report, “Chelsea, Aston Villa, Tottenham, Juventus and AC Milan” are all among those also keen on his services this winter. Can the Red Devils get the deal over the line in a bid to fix their goalscoring woes?

Harmanpreet: Sri Lanka tour 'ideal platform' for young bowlers to step up

Head coach Powar says they will identify their Commonwealth Games XI on the Sri Lanka trip

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jun-2022The upcoming tour of Sri Lanka will be the “ideal platform” and the “right time” for the young quick bowlers to grab their “opportunities” in the absence of the experienced Jhulan Goswami and Shikha Pandey. Harmanpreet Kaur, India’s newly-appointed ODI captain, and head coach Ramesh Powar, laid out the plans for the team before departing for the Sri Lanka tour, as they look to fine-tune their plans for the Commonwealth Games starting next month and the T20 World Cup next year in South Africa. The omission of Goswami, Pandey and allrounder Sneh Rana were among the talking points when the squads were picked for the ODIs and T20Is in Sri Lanka. While Rana was “rested,” Powar explained, he also hinted that Goswami and Pandey had been dropped. While India’s spin attack includes experienced names like Deepti Sharma, Poonam Yadav and Rajeshwari Gayakwad apart from Radha Yadav (only for T20Is), the pace attack features Pooja Vastrakar, Meghna Singh, Renuka Singh and allrounder Simran Bahadur.Related

“I think if we talk about our bowling unit, this is the time they can take responsibility and this tour will be the ideal platform for them to perform,” Harmanpreet said at a virtual press conference on Saturday. “We will take the charge and bowl [their] full quota [of overs]. For me, it’s a great opportunity where you can build a good team. Sri Lanka is not going to be an easy tour for us. So, it’s important [to ensure that] whatever we are planning we go and deliver. That’s what as a unit we are looking forward to.”Powar further said this tour will open the doorway for further growth among youngsters.”When you move forward in a transition period, you need to give opportunities to young players to cement their places,” he said. “For that as a support staff, we need to go and give them support through NCA and skill coaches that they should concur in every situation. So, this is the right time for players to take their opportunity and do well going forward.”As far as pace bowling is concerned, you’ve seen from the Australia tour, we’ve introduced Renuka and Meghna, we introduced a few bowlers in the system as well. So, it will take a little time to see the results because they have to address their fitness and match experience.”As far as Jhulan and Shikha are concerned, I think they have done a fantastic job over the years and BCCI and selectors can update on their fitness and everything. As of now, Shikha and Jhulan are not travelling with us.”So, whichever bowlers are there – we are carrying four fast bowlers – you will see results from them. Pooja Vastrakar has been an outstanding bowler for the last six months. Moving forward, we will try and fast-track this fast bowling attack’s improvements.”Rana, he said, was given time off to stay “fresh” for the busy calendar ahead.”She’s been rested for this series, she’s in NCA,” Powar said. “She’s working on her fitness and moving forward. In the FTP we have 20-25 T20 games and some ODI series, so we want her to be fresh for those series. We are trying to manage workload of the bowling as well as the batting unit and are trying to balance it out”India will play without the experienced duo of Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami•Hindustan Times via Getty ImagesThis will be India’s first international assignment since the Women’s World Cup in March, where they bowed out in the group stages after a loss in the virtual quarter-final against South Africa. This will also be the first time in over two decades where the batting order will not feature Mithali Raj, who announced her retirement recently. Taking over the ODI captaincy too, Harmanpreet felt the leadership centralisation could aid clarity among the team members too.”I think things will be easier for me now because [when] two different captains were there, sometimes things were not easy because we both had different ideas,” she said. “But now the players will think clearly [and know] what I am demanding as a captain, and everybody can look forward to that. It’s easier for me to ask them what I’m expecting from them, so things will be much easier for me and my team-mates also.”With the Commonwealth Games around the corner and a T20 World Cup next year, Harmanpreet and Powar talked about assessing where the team stood right now and how they will approach the upcoming games.”In T20s we will definitely look to [play] our first combination, give them as many games as possible,” Harmanpreet said. “In the ODIs, we have a little time to prepare for the next World Cup [in 2025] and it is where we will see if we can give chance to each and everybody.”Powar said they will also freeze a combination of 11 on the Sri Lanka tour for the Commonwealth Games.”At this moment, we are trying to assess where we stand as a team and where we need to get at to beat all the teams in the ICC tournaments and in every series we play. This Sri Lanka tour will give us the opportunity to try a few players. We are trying to plan our next eight months according to the situations we have to face ahead. It is more of a planning phase right now and we will execute those plans once we go ahead in the series and tournaments.”To add to that, we will freeze down a combination of 11 which will take part in Commonwealth so that we are confident walking into the tournament. And the players will be confident that they are going to play in the first game.”India and Sri Lanka will play three T20Is in Dambulla on June 23, 25 and 27 followed by as many ODIs on July 1, 4 and 7.

Australia to tour Sri Lanka for all-format series after six-year gap

Australia will visit Sri Lanka for an all-format series in June-July this year. The tour, Australia’s first to Sri Lanka since mid-2016, will feature two Tests, five ODIs and three T20Is, to be played from June 8 to July 12, with the match slotted in Colombo, Kandy and Galle. The series will start with the T20Is and end with the Tests.

June 21: 4th ODI, Colombo
June 24: 5th ODI, Colombo
June 29 to July 3: 1st Test, Galle
July 8 to 12: 2nd Test, Galle

“We played some very competitive T20 internationals against Sri Lanka at home earlier this year and we are excited to tour there for the first time since 2016 in what is sure to be another terrific Test and white ball series,” Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said in a statement. “There is no more challenging place to play cricket than on the subcontinent and this tour offers our players invaluable experience and another great opportunity to excel on the world stage.”Back in July-August 2016, Australia were blanked 3-0 in the Test series, but won the ODIs 4-1 and the T20Is 2-0. It will be a moderately quick turnaround for the players from the two countries who will be engaged in the IPL, which is expected to end on May 29.”We are in for some exciting cricket, especially considering that an Australian tour to Sri Lanka is taking place after five [six] years,” SLC CEO Ashley De Silva said. “The T20 Series will help our preparations for the T20 World Cup, whilst the Test and ODI segments are also competitions of immense value for us, as we aim to move through the ICC World Test Championship rankings and also gearing up for the ICC Men’s World Cup in 2023.”

'I am no longer available' – Belgium No.1 Koen Casteels quits national team in protest against 'red carpet' Thibaut Courtois return

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Having previously clashed repeatedly with former manager Dominic Tedesco – with Courtois reportedly angered by the decision to make Romelu Lukaku Belgium's captain instead of him – the Real Madrid shot-stopper has not played for his national team since June 2023. However, the appointment of Rudi Garcia has opened a pathway to an international return for Courtois, and Koen Casteels, the man who has filled in as No.1, is not happy about the decision to "roll out the red carpet" for him.

  • WHAT CASTEELS SAID

Casteels, who plays his club football for Saudi outfit Al-Qadsiah, told the Belgian podcast : "It's strange that the football association has turned 180 degrees and is rolling out the red carpet and welcoming him back with open arms… I think it's a bit strange that Courtois can decide for himself whether he can come back. It is not so much towards Thibaut, but mainly towards the football association. That does not fit in with the standards and values that I have about what a team sport or a sporting organisation should have. As of today, I am no longer available [for the national team]."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Casteels' decision to rule himself out of selection due to Courtois' return may come as a shock to new Belgium boss Garcia, although he'll be relieved about his recent conversations with the Madrid keeper, which reportedly went well. Having Courtois between the sticks is a huge boost; the two-time Champions League winner is considered one of the best goalkeepers on the planet and at the age of 31 he still has a key role to play during a transitional period for Belgium.

    WHAT NEXT FOR BELGIUM?

With Courtois back in goal, Belgium will now prepare for an important international break coming up later this month. Garcia's side is scheduled to face Ukraine twice in back-to-back UEFA Nations League games, one on Thursday 20 March and the other on Sunday 23 March. Their new manager will be desperate to make a strong start to his tenure.

Nottingham Forest eyeing January deal for in-demand £35k-p/w player

Nottingham Forest are interested in signing an in-demand £35,000-a-week defender in January, according to a new report.

The Reds have enjoyed a fantastic start to the Premier League season but suffered a bump in the road over the weekend as they were beaten by Newcastle United at The City Ground. Nuno Espirito Santo will hope this doesn’t derail their campaign as supporters continue to dream of European football.

Nottingham Forest and 8 other Premier League surprise packages

The Premier League has had plenty of surprise packages over the previous 30 years – here are some of the best.

Nottingham Forest news

Forest’s start to the season has been so good that owner Evangelos Marinakis is keen to tie Nuno down to a new contract. The Portuguese’s current deal runs until 2026, but the fact that the Reds sit in the top half, a few points away from the top four, has “impressed” Marinakis to the point that a new deal is in the offing.

That will likely be a priority for the Forest board, as they will not want to lose Nuno to another team. But as well as looking to secure their manager’s future, the Premier League side are also looking ahead to January.

Forest are interested in signing Chris Rigg from Sunderland after his impressive performances in the Championship have put him on their radar. The midfielder has caught the eye of a number of teams in recent weeks, and Forest are now the latest side to show an interest as they look to bolster their squad when January arrives.

As well as looking at Rigg, Forest also hold an interest in another player playing in England – someone who is unhappy with his current situation.

Nottingham Forest eyeing January deal for Lamptey

According to CaughtOffside, Nottingham Forest are interested in signing Tariq Lamptey from Brighton & Hove Albion. The right-back has been with the Seagulls since January 2020, when he joined from Chelsea after coming through the youth academy at Stamford Bridge.

Lamptey, who earns £35,000 a week at Brighton, was a firm regular in the starting XI when he arrived, playing a key role under former managers Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi, but the same cannot be said under Fabian Hurzeler.

The 24-year-old has played just four times this season, and three of those appearances have come in the Carabao Cup. His single appearance in the league came in a 10-minute cameo against Wolves a couple of weeks ago.

Lamptey is in the final year of his contract at Brighton and is thought to be considering leaving the club by the end of the season, but given that is when his contract ends, Brighton may look to offload him in January.

It is reported that the defender has shown no desire to sign a new contract as he is unhappy with his current situation, which has alerted Forest, as well as Brentford, Everton, and West Ham. His preference is to remain in the Premier League, but he does have an option to move abroad, as Juventus are also interested in his services.

A statement has finally been released by the FA after one was deleted by the Premier League the day after the game. Friday's announcement read: "Everton, Liverpool, Arne Slot and Sipke Hulshoff have been charged following the Premier League fixture between the clubs on Wednesday, 12 February.
