Leeds Backed To Make "Big Appointment" This Summer

Leeds United are expected to make a "big appointment" to replace Victor Orta this summer, according to an update from journalist Ben Jacobs.

Has Orta left Leeds?

It has been another tumultuous season at Elland Road, with the Whites still heavily threatened by relegation from the Premier League. Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Manchester City was at least a spirited effort, but it was still a loss in Sam Allardyce's first game in charge.

The Englishman replaced Javi Gracia after his recent sacking – he had initially taken over from Jesse Marsch – and Victor Orta also departed his role as director of football at Leeds. The Italian was a big figure at the club during his time there, so it is vital that his replacement is nailed in the near future, regardless of where the Whites are playing their football next season.

Victor Orta watches on from the stands at Molineux ahead of Leeds United's Premier League victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Who will replace Orta this summer?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jacobs touched up on the importance of the appointment, in what could be such a key summer at Elland Road:

"49ers Enterprises are well aware of the importance of the next four games. They were also extremely involved in Orta’s departure and the hiring of Sam Allardyce, as they were in the appointment of Gracia.

"But the one thing that each departure and appointment has in common is that it clears the slate a little bit. Gracia was only temporary, and now he's gone. Allardyce has come in, but he's only temporary. Orta has gone, which means there's a big appointment and window of opportunity to bring in someone new with a different approach and a new strategy."

As mentioned, the importance of Leeds bringing in a top-quality director of football cannot be overstated enough, with Orta such an influential figure, even if he could prove to be a divisive figure at times. He was still the brains behind the signings of players such as Raphinha, Jack Harrison and Mateusz Klich, outlining the job he did, and he was hugely passionate at the same time.

Whether Allardyce stays put beyond the summer remains to be seen, but whatever happens with him, having someone as good as, or hopefully even better than, Orta is vital for the Whites, ensuring they continue to be a well-run club.

It will clearly be easier to appoint an elite director of football if Leeds' Premier League status is preserved, which should act as an extra incentive for Allardyce and his players to get the job done in the coming weeks.

Tottenham: Levy Now Wants "Elite" Manager

Tottenham Hotspur reportedly have a new managerial target in Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti, according to journalist Rudy Galetti.

What's the latest Spurs manager news?

Spurs have an array of in-work and free-agent managers on their radar as chairman Daniel Levy weighs his next move carefully. The Lilywhites are currently contending with a plethora of issues both on and off the field, with Harry Kane's contract situation and the worldwide ban of director Fabio Paratici coming as real concerns.

At the front of Levy's queue of tasks, though, is Tottenham's long and drawn-out search for Antonio Conte's replacement. In terms of readily-available bosses, Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique, Julian Nagelsmann, Zinedine Zidane and even Brendan Rodgers have all been linked to the vacant post.

Meanwhile, currently employed tacticians from abroad, like Eintracht Frankfurt's Oliver Glasner and Feyenoord's Arne Slot, are impressing and have earned Tottenham's admiration.

Even names like Christophe Galtier, who could leave Paris-Saint Germain at the end of this campaign, and Celtic's Ange Postecoglou are Tottenham-linked options for Levy.

Now, as per journalist Galetti, writing on his personal website, it appears a new target has entered the frame.

According to the Italian transfer reporter, Napoli boss Spalletti is now being eyed by Tottenham's management – presumably meaning Spurs club chiefs. Indeed, the 64-year-old is apparently attracting Spurs interest alongside Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim.

This apparently comes amid a 'stalemate' with Pochettino as the 51-year-old is waiting to see what happens at Real Madrid in regard to Carlo Ancelotti's future.

Should Tottenham attempt Spalletti move?

The former Roma boss comes as quite an exciting fresh link when looking at the superb job he has done at Napoli.

Spalletti's side are currently storming to the Serie A title, 16 points out in front of second-placed Lazio whilst winning an incredible 23 of 28 matches this season.

The 4-3-3 attacking coach also has a Champions League quarter-final tie against rivals AC MIlan to look forward to, but this isn't his first trophy-chasing campaign.

Indeed, the Italian has won three domestic trophies in his homeland – clinching the Coppa Italia with Roma in 2007 and 2008.

Spalletti also boasts an Italian Super Cup from his time at the Stadio Olimpico and would come to Spurs with plenty of experience.

Called an 'elite' coach by BBC Sport reporter John Bennett, going by his credentials, it's pretty hard to deny that Spalletti would be a solid Spurs candidate.

Newcastle United Told To Pay £35m For Midfield Target

Newcastle United have learned that they will have to pay £35m should they want to sign Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic this summer, according to reports.

What's the latest on Milinkovic-Savic to Newcastle?

Following Jonjo Shelvey’s move to Nottingham Forest, Eddie Howe is expected to bolster his ranks with at least a few new central signings ahead of the new term and has identified the 28-year-old as an ideal candidate to bring to St. James’ Park.

The Serbian will be out of contract at the Stadio Olimpico next summer meaning that the upcoming window will present Maurizio Sarri’s side with their final big opportunity to cash in for a decent fee. The Serie A star is currently his team’s overall top-performing player with a match rating of 7.25 so it’s no surprise that he’s caught the eye of the boss in the northeast.

Calcio Mercato reported in February that the Magpies, alongside Premier League rivals Arsenal and West Ham, had already put forward proposals to their target’s agent but that can’t have been the case as they are only now discovering what his asking price will be.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Milinkovic-Savic‘s representative, Mateja Kezman, is “on a mission” to receive offers worth €40m (£35m) for his client which could prove to be a roadblock. The Tyneside outfit would only likely place a bid in between €20-25m (£17-21m), certainly no more than €30m (£26m) as a result of him likely to be available on a cut-price deal. The high-flyers would have to table the fee being demanded in order for it to get accepted and whether he would be open to the switch yet remains to be seen.

Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Should Newcastle splash the cash on Milinkovic-Savic?

Milinkovic-Savic’s Lazio teammate Ciro Immobile has claimed that the midfielder is on the “same level” as Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, and looking at his numbers, it would certainly be worth Newcastle emptying their pockets to secure his signature.

The Nike-sponsored star has posted 12 goal contributions (eight assists and four goals) in 25 Serie A appearances this season and would add excellent versatility to the squad with his ability to play in defensive, central or attacking midfield alongside as a second striker.

Standing at 6 foot 4, Milinkovic-Savic also brings a strong physical presence to the centre of the pitch and is competitive off the ground ranking in the 96th percentile for most aerials won highlighting his desire to win back possession for his team so he would be the ideal reinforcement for the Magpies.

Rangers send scouts to watch Joel Piroe

Glasgow Rangers have sent scouts to watch Joel Piroe ahead of a potential move to the Scottish Premiership, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Alongside Whittaker?

The Light Blues are believed to still be in contact with Swansea City regarding a summer deal for Morgan Whittaker having failed to land him in January and it appears that he isn’t the only player Michael Beale is targeting.

The Dutchman has now entered the final 18 months of his contract in Wales, and being Russell Martin’s top-performing offensive player, has caught the eye of the hierarchy at Ibrox.

The Championship outfit are having the kind of season where they aren’t in any real danger but neither are they going to achieve anything so the striker could be tempted to look elsewhere should he want to progress his career further.

The Latest: Rangers scout Piroe

According to Football League World, Rangers (and by extension sporting director Ross Wilson) have been ‘scouting’ Piroe in ‘recent weeks’ and would offer a ‘different type of opportunity’ should he decide to make the move north of the border.

Burnley, Middlesbrough and Norwich City are also ‘keeping tabs’ on the 23-year-old, whilst Crystal Palace and Everton both ‘explored’ a deal in January, though nothing ever came to fruition.

Sources believe that Swansea are ‘at risk’ of losing their standout performer as a result of failing to properly get themselves going under Martin, so this could be one to watch in the months ahead.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Piroe has been dubbed a ‘danger man’ by journalist Josh Bunting and Rangers need to act fast should they want to secure his services ahead of their fellow competitors.

The Wijchen native has clocked up 13 goals and provided one assist in 34 Championship appearances so far this season where he’s currently averaging 3.2 shots per 90 minutes.

The 6 foot 1 star also ranks in the 95th percentile for pass completion, showing his excellent ability to link up well with his teammates, and the 91st percentile for most progressive passes (FBRef).

Despite naturally being a centre-forward, the left-footed ace has played in five different positions since the start of his career and is comfortable operating anywhere across the frontline.

The Teddy Bears have to head into the summer window on a mission to recruit players that will be able to have a significant impact on the side and get them competing with Celtic again and Piroe is certainly the perfect candidate to come in and do just the job.

Newcastle urged to avoid Pope appeal

Newcastle United have been warned against the idea of appealing Nick Pope’s red card which he picked up in the defeat on the weekend against Liverpool.

Can Newcastle appeal Nick Pope’s red card?

It was a pretty disappointing weekend on the whole for Newcastle who saw a lot go against them over the course of Saturday and Sunday.

The Tynesiders lost their game against Liverpool and saw Tottenham Hotspur leapfrog them on Sunday to go back into the top four.

However, their main concern will be the straight red card for Pope who will, therefore, miss the Carabao Cup final on the weekend at Wembley Stadium.

Eddie Howe’s men have the option to appeal the decision, however, speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Dermot Gallagher has suggested they would be wasting their own time in doing so:

“They can launch an appeal today. They will have to prove the referee made a clear and obvious error. I would suggest the chances of that are very remote because of what I’ve said – he’s moving towards goal, he’s got the ball, the covering defender, if he got back, is not a goalkeeper – so highly, highly unlikely.”

What games will Nick Pope miss for Newcastle?

As a result of his error against the Reds, Pope is now set to miss the final at Wembley on Sunday as well as the following two games in Newcastle’s schedule.

The games after the final on Sunday include a trip to Manchester City and then a game at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

On the weekend, Newcastle will also be without Martin Dubravka with the Slovakian goalkeeper ineligible having played in the competition for Manchester United earlier in the season.

Therefore, it is expected Loris Karius will line up between the sticks for Howe’s side but they will have Dubravka available for the final two league games of Pope’s suspension.

In the days following the red card shown to Pope, the likes of Gary Lineker have spoken out urging for the goalkeeper to be made available to play in the final.

However, Newcastle recently saw Bruno Guimaraes serve his red card picked up in the Carabao Cup in the last three league games meaning he is available for the game on Sunday.

So in that sense, it does feel as if this is just something the Toon Army are going to have to take on the chin.

Officials miss clear offside that cost Leeds

Footage has emerged which shows Leeds United may have been hard done by during their weekend Premier League clash as there was a potential offside in the build-up to the game’s only goal.

The Lowdown: Leeds on wrong end of big decision

Leeds slumped to yet another defeat which now has the Whites sitting outside the bottom three on goal difference as clubs around them picked up points over the weekend.

Jesse Marsch still finds himself in a job despite picking up just two wins in their last 15 league games – and this all while being heavily backed in the summer and January transfer windows by the Leeds board.

The Whites only managed to muster up four shots on target against Nottingham Forest, which counted towards a low expected goals ratio of 0.8, but they could feel a little aggrieved given there was an apparent offence prior to Forest winning the free kick which they scored from.

The Latest: Marsch may feel aggrieved

There was indeed still a lot Leeds could have done to prevent Brennan Johnson’s impressive strike, but they shouldn’t have been put in that position judging by an image to have emerged from the game.

The fact that the incident occurred right in front of the linesman should have allowed him to make what would appear to be an obvious offside call, but with no Leeds players appealing for it, that may well have put doubt into his mind.

The Verdict: Linesman makes major mistake

The fact that the incident happened in a separate phase of play means that VAR couldn’t go back and check it in the aftermath of Johnson’s goal, but that doesn’t excuse the linesman for missing the offside.

From the image provided by one of Sky Sports’ Twitter accounts, it’s pretty clear that there was an offside offence prior to Forest winning a free kick, and it’s those small margins that can sometimes decide a club and manager’s fate.

Marsch will know he’s in a lot of trouble now with very few positive results to show for since he took over from Marcelo Bielsa last season, and given the amount of investment at Leeds under the American, it is very worrying times for the Elland Road outfit.

Wolves: Van Ewijk can solve key probelm

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be hopeful of ending the transfer window with a bang by adding another one or two new faces to the squad as Julen Lopetegui continues his renovation of the team.

Bringing players such as Mario Lemina, Pablo Sarabia and Matheus Nunes to the club is a key step in the right direction, with the Spaniard aiming to beef out his midfield and attacking options, however, he shouldn’t be forgetting to improve positions that have proven problematic during the campaign.

The right-back area has seen Nelson Semedo struggle so far this campaign, registering a Sofascore rating of 6.67/10 and being susceptible to defensive lapses which have culminated in Wolves conceding 30 goals in the Premier League this term already.

The Old Gold have been linked with a move for Brighton and Hove Albion defender Tariq Lamptey to bolster their options on the right side of their defence, however, having missed 36 games through a variety of injury problems since 2020, the Molineux outfit might be better off signing someone else.

Heerenveen youngster Milan van Ewijk is another defender linked with a switch to Wolves and the Dutchman could be a more reliable option for Lopetegui.

The 22-year-old has played 18 times in the Eredivisie this season, achieving a Sofascore rating of 7.13/10 while showcasing his attacking ability by scoring three goals, creating two big chances and making 0.8 key passes per match.

Despite his age, Van Ewijk is also extremely mature and combines attacking intelligence with defensive ability to great effect, helping his team keep seven clean sheets in 18 matches this term.

He has also made an average of 1.5 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 2.1 clearances per game in the league, while also winning 59% of his duels and the defender even praised himself while discussing his strengths back in 2019.

He said: “I’m a fierce right back who can attack well, but also defend well and I’m in good shape. I can certainly be found in the front. Last season I also gave a number of assists. I’ll show the rest during the matches.”

Another attribute that could stand him in good stead in the Premier League is his speed, with the official Eredivisie Twitter account sharing that the young defender was the fastest player in the top flight before Christmas, with a top speed of 34.66kph and the speedster would work well bombing up and down the right flank under Lopetegui.

A move for the Dutchman could certainly help solve Wolves’ issues on the right side of the defence and with just a few days left of the transfer window, the 56-year-old will need to act fast to secure a deal for Van Ewijk.

Fulham ‘in talks’ to sign Cedric Soares

Fulham are ‘in talks’ to sign Arsenal defender Cedric Soares this month, according to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas.

The Lowdown: Long-standing interest

The Portugal international’s contract at the Emirates Stadium isn’t set to expire until 2024, but he’s been generating interest having fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta at the top of the Premier League.

The Cottagers made several enquiries for the right-back last summer and were reported to be reigniting their interest in the winter where there has now been a huge breakthrough.

The Latest: Fulham in discussions

Taking to Twitter, Thomas revealed that Fulham are finally in negotiations with Cedric regarding a potential move after being given the green light by the Gunners.

“#FulhamFC are in talks with Cedric Soares over personal terms. #ArsenalFC gave the player permission to speak to them.”

The Verdict: No-brainer

Cedric has been praised for his ‘brilliant’ delivery into the box by Sam Dean, and Fulham completing a deal for him is an absolute no-brainer when you consider how much he could flourish under Marco Silva.

The Singen native has racked up 30 assists and even scored seven goals himself throughout his career, alongside ranking in the 93rd percentile for passes attempted, showing his desire to get down the flank and make an impact linking up in the final third.

Cedric also shares the same agent as Willian so this could be a huge advantage for the club when it comes to getting this move over the line before the end of the window.
