Garth makes a case to be Australia's permanent spearhead

Kim Garth still can’t quite believe she is getting picked to play cricket for Australia, but she had better get used to it. Because after earning Player-of-the-Match and Player-of the-Series honours against West Indies she is now going to be very hard to leave out.Garth, 27, was not selected in any of Australia’s limited-overs internationals during the multi-format Ashes and did not play in the first two T20Is against West Indies when Hayley Matthews was running roughshod over Australia’s bowlers. But her inclusion for the third match of the T20I series, with Australia under enormous pressure, and the subsequent ODI series proved a decisive move. She took 2 for 24 in the T20I series decider and followed that up with figures of 3 for 8, 1 for 20 and 2 for 14 in the ODI series including dismissing Matthews for just 20 and 23, bowled and lbw respectively. No Australia bowler, no bowler in world cricket this year, has managed to contain Matthews, and yet it was Australia’s newest fast bowler, a former Ireland international, who was able to do it.Related

  • Kim Garth excited for 'next step up' after 'moving across the world'

“I’m very pleased,” Garth said. “I think if you look at the results figures-wise, it probably suggests that I bowled best at the start of the series. But I actually don’t feel that in terms of how I feel. I felt like I’ve improved throughout the series. In that first game I was probably bowling a little bit wider of the stumps and I felt as the series progressed, I got into a bit of rhythm and probably bowled my best today.”Garth still doesn’t feel like she belongs in the Australian team. Having made the brave decision to give away her Ireland career in 2019 and try and qualify for Australia, after playing 37 ODIs and 51 T20Is for the country of her birth, she is still pinching herself that she has actually earned a place in the side. But given the way she has bowled in this series, and performed in general every time she has played for Australia since her first appearance for her adopted country in December last year, it is hard to fathom how she has played so little. She played three T20Is on her first tour for Australia against India last year and bowled more dot balls across those three games than any of her team-mates. She also had a better economy rate for the series than all of Australia’s seam bowlers except for Ellyse Perry. However, she did not play a single game in Australia’s T20 World Cup triumph in South Africa and was not selected in any of the T20s or ODIs in the Ashes, but she did play in the Test match, where she was one of Australia’s most economical bowlers. After spending a lot of time running the drinks and watching from the sidelines, this performance against Matthews and West Indies will likely prove to herself and to Australia’s selectors that she deserves a permanent place in all three forms.”It’s definitely done a lot [for my confidence], I think,” Garth said. “Since coming into the Australian team, it’s been absolutely incredible, but as a result of that, I actually haven’t played as much cricket as I suppose I have done over the past few years.”Cricket is a funny game. It plays games with your head. So the more time you spend sitting on the sidelines thinking about it, the more you kind of talk yourself into things or out of things.”Every time I pull on the Australian shirt, it’s very exciting to be able to go out there and perform and hopefully justify my spot was really pleasing.”

Leeds must rue losing "superb" talent who's outperforming Bogle in 2024/25

Leeds United will be hoping to go one better in the closing stages of the season, aiming to finally end their two-year stint in the Championship under Daniel Farke.

The German led the Whites to a third-place finish, missing out on automatic promotion and having to feature in the play-offs, something which would result in a failure to secure a return to the Premier League.

Southampton claimed a 1-0 triumph in the final at Wembley, restricting the side to another season in the second tier, but the Whites have made the perfect response to the adversity they’ve faced.

They sit at the top of the table with just a couple of months of the campaign remaining, with Farke edging ever closer to claiming a third Championship title of his managerial career.

He’s made various key additions over the last couple of months after the play-off final heartbreak, with one of the signings thriving under the German’s guidance.

Jayden Bogle’s stats for Leeds in 2024/25

Right-back Jayden Bogle joined Leeds in a £5m deal from Sheffield United in the summer, looking to provide added quality to the side to right the wrongs of last season.

The 24-year-old has been crucial to their success, starting 33 times out of a possible 35 league matches to date, cementing himself as the number one option in that department.

Despite his defensive role, the Englishman has registered four goals and two assists in the Championship, notching the same number of contributions as attacker Mateo Joseph.

He’s also won 1.7 tackles per 90 this campaign, proving that he’s more than capable of contributing at the back – as seen by the club’s defensive record, which is the second best in the division.

However, despite his form at Elland Road, he’s been outperformed by one other player who previously plied his trade in Yorkshire – with the club rueing not being able to keep hold of the star.

The former Leeds star who’s outperformed Bogle on 2024/25

After their failure to get promoted, Leeds lost numerous key players, such as Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville, moving to Brighton and West Ham United, respectively.

Various other players also departed Elland Road, one of whom was right-back Connor Roberts, who spent the campaign on loan in Yorkshire from Burnley, who were in the Premier League at the time.

The 29-year-old played a vital role in the first-team last campaign during his temporary stint, making 15 appearances after his January move, registering a goal and an assist for the Whites.

However, the Welsh international would return to his parent side after their own relegation back to the Championship at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Roberts has since impressed under Scott Parker, registering two goals and three assists in his 30 outings, notching one less goal contribution than Bogle but outperforming the Englishman in multiple key areas.

The 29-year-old, who has previously been labelled “superb” by journalist Simon Stone, has completed more progressive carries per 90, whilst completing more take-ons.

He’s also won more of his attempted tackles, showcasing his defensive ability and contributing to the Clarets’ incredible record, which has seen them concede just 10 goals in 35 matches.

Given his form at Turf Moor, the Whites must wish they were able to hold on to the full-back after his impressive loan spell in Yorkshire last time around.

However, their loss is Burnley’s gain, with Parker having a quality player who could bolster their chances of promotion, looking to prevent Farke’s men from finishing off the task.

Daily Mail journalist Lewis Steele states that Liverpool will want around £50 million ($67.3m) for centre-back Jarell Quansah, despite his lack of game time this season. If he does go, though, a replacement will be needed.

  • (C)Getty Images

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Quansah made 25 appearances for Liverpool last season but just 13 of those were starts. He was behind captain Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in the pecking order, and as a result, fellow journalist David Lynch believes the 23-year-old is a 'genuine candidate for a departure'. Lynch adds that Premier League and Bundesliga sides are keen on the defender but £50m does seem a lot.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Liverpool academy product Quansah, whose Anfield contract runs until 2029 and there is an option to extend that a further year, made most of his starts (five) this season in the Reds' run to the Carabao Cup final – where they lost to Newcastle United.

It remains to be seen if Quansah will still be at Liverpool next season, or if he will seek pastures new in a bid for more game time. For the time being, it seems he will be a back-up to Van Dijk and Konate.

Milan's chaotic season ended with a disappointing eighth-place finish, depriving them of a place in next season's Champions League and Europa League. As the club scrambles to reset, their former legendary coach Capello has weighed in on who should lead the team next, naming Fabregas, not Antonio Conte or Massimiliano Allegri, as his top choice.

Capello’s endorsement of Fabregas signals a shift toward innovation rather than recycling established names. With Igli Tare likely to be named sporting director, Milan may be preparing for a fresh era, with current boss Sergio Conceicao expected to leave despite joining on an 18-month contract in December.

WHAT FABIO CAPELLO SAID

Capello praised Fabregas for his fresh ideas and the style of football he implemented at Como, telling : "It seems to me that things are a bit up in the air. I read about Massimiliano Allegri, who now seems closer to Napoli, in case Antonio Conte goes to Juventus… From the outside I see anything but clear ideas. And now it will be up to Tare to find a solution… If we have to exclude the usual names, I’d go with Fabregas. I like his football. At Como he showed interesting things. And he already seems sufficiently ready.”

Milan's first task is to confirm their new sporting director, with Tare expected to be announced imminently. Fabregas is a bold option with potential, but he has insisted he will remain at Como after being linked with the Bayer Leverkusen job, which has since been taken by Erik ten Hag.

Henriette Ishimwe picks up four wickets in four balls as Rwanda stun Zimbabwe

Seamer tells ESPNcricinfo that all four deliveries were “yorkers, because that’s a delivery I practise a lot”

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Jan-2023Rwanda have registered a historic first victory at a cricket World Cup after their under-19 team beat Zimbabwe by 39 runs in their second group match.Rwanda’s top three scored the bulk of their 119 runs with none of the other batters getting into double-figures, but they defended their total fiercely. They had Zimbabwe 80 for 5 before capping victory with five wickets in six balls including four in four balls by seamer Henriette Ishimwe. Her hat-trick is the second at this tournament after South Africa’s Madison Landsman took the competition’s first against Scotland on Monday. The Zimbabwean collapse started with a run-out in the 17th over, when victory already seemed to be evading their grasp.

Man City to swoop in for Caoimhin Kelleher?! Pep Guardiola urged to consider Liverpool backup goalkeeper as Ederson replacement

Kelleher likely to leave Liverpool this summerDavid James urges Man City to sign KelleherEderson's future at Etihad Stadium uncertainFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Kelleher joined the Liverpool senior team in 2019 after having come up through the Reds' youth system. The Irish international has made a total of 67 appearances for the senior side, but has not been the first choice throughout the period, as Alisson Becker has held the post. With Liverpool bringing Giorgi Mamardashvili in, it is now likely that Kelleher will leave Anfield this summer.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

West Ham are said to be interested in signing Kelleher this summer from Liverpool, however, former Reds and Manchester City keeper James has urged Pep Guardiola to sign the Irish international to replace the underperforming Ederson in goal for next season.

WHAT JAMES SAID

Speaking to Prime Casino, James said: "Yeah, I think for Ederson, if you go back to last season, maybe the season before even, Ali and Eddie for me were the top two goalkeepers around, without question. I think he's had a difficult season. I think that's fair to say. A lot of off-field issues perhaps from the beginning of the season, which has been a bit of a legacy throughout the season. He seems happy, maybe that's because he's getting his assist now. But if Eddie were to move, I think Stefan Ortega has proven to be a reliable number two.

"But even the likes of Caoimhin Kelleher could be a suitable replacement if Pep Guardiola was looking to replace Eddie because Caoimhín, in his role for Liverpool, is essentially doing everything that Eddie does for Manchester City. Caoimhín’s got that calmness about him. He's unflappable. He's won trophies, which is a major thing. He knows how to get into those positions to win trophies. He's been involved in penalty shootouts, all the stuff that you want from a top goalkeeper. Again, sort of answers two questions in one, doesn't it, about Caoimhin.

"If Liverpool needed to move one goalkeeper on, and Man City might need one. You know, you probably wouldn't even have to relocate because it's only 45 minutes down the road. You don’t often see moves like that between two title rivals, but I think this one could benefit all parties."

Heather Knight drops Sophia Dunkley opening hint as England target 'ultra-aggression' in T20I powerplay

Captain justifies Beaumont omission as England seek to cash in on fielding restrictions

Andrew Miller20-Jul-2022Sophia Dunkley could be rewarded for her explosive form in the ODIs against South Africa with a role as England’s T20I opener, after Heather Knight indicated that “ultra-aggression” in the powerplay was the means by which her team intended to target Gold in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games campaign in Birmingham.Dunkley, 24, thrived after being handed a promotion to No.3 for the ODI series, scoring 180 runs from 170 balls all told, including her maiden international hundred in the second match at Bristol. And, in the wake of the surprise omission of Tammy Beaumont from England’s CWG squad, she may well get the chance to partner the incumbent Danni Wyatt at the top of the T20I order, when the final leg of the multi-format series against South Africa gets underway in Chelmsford on Thursday.”In terms of T20, Sophia is definitely an option to open the batting,” Knight said. “She’s done it a little bit here and there, and been really impressive in how she goes about doing things. She’s naturally a very quick scorer and wants to hit boundaries and take things on, so she’s certainly an option for us at the top end.”Related

It was Knight herself who made way at No. 3 to allow Dunkley to move up the order, and though the captain’s initial returns suffered in the opening two ODIs, an innings of 63 from 49 balls at the death in Leicester was evidence of what she hopes she can achieve as a designated finisher, as England racked up an imposing 371 for 7 – only seven runs shy of the team’s all-time record.”Two areas that we haven’t been as good at in ODI cricket is being super-aggressive in the powerplay and also being able to manage the innings towards the back end,” Knight said. “We felt like Sophia has the strength to be super-aggressive in the way she plays at No.3. And also my strengths are probably managing an innings, so we felt like it was the best move for the team to try and create a really strong, dynamic batting line-up.”Sophia has taken her opportunity massively, I’m really pleased,” Knight added. “I have got a really good relationship with Sophia, and I’ve really loved seeing her develop over the last few years. It’s been a bit strange, I guess, batting at five, getting a little bit of pad rash and waiting for a lot longer to go in, but it’s just something to get used to, I guess.”The mainstay of England’s innings at Leicester, however, was Beaumont, whose 119 from 107 balls was the perfect response to her T20I axing. But while Knight praised her team-mate’s tenacity and insisted the “door was not closed” for a 20-over comeback, she doubled down on the decision-making that had led England to make such a tough call.”Tammy’s ODI form is undisputable,” Knight said. “She’s one of the best players in the world and I knew she was going to get a hundred in one of those three games. Knowing Tammy’s character, she would have wanted to prove a point, and her ODI cricket is absolutely not in doubt.Alice Capsey impressed for Oval Invincibles in the maiden season of the Hundred•Getty Images”We just felt like we wanted to be more aggressive in that powerplay in T20. And we feel we’ve brought in players that can add that fearlessness and aggressiveness to the squad. I’ve no doubt Tammy will go away and grow, and she’s certainly not out of the frame in the future. But at the moment, we’ve gone down that line of the ultra-aggressive players that can go in there and really take the game on the front end, when there’s only two fielders outside the circle.”To that end, Knight admitted that the team management already had an idea of their first-choice line-up for the T20I leg of the summer – one that could feature as many as eight games in 18 days if England make through to the Commonwealth Games final at Edgbaston on August 7. However, Knight added, the first priority was to ensure a new-look squad had a chance to get to know one another, given the addition of a number of fresh faces, most notably the teenage pairing of Alice Capsey and Freya Kemp.”Obviously we’ve added six players to the squad, and they only arrived yesterday,” Knight said. “But the main thing we want as a batting unit is to be really flexible and adaptable to situations, and to make sure we’re getting the right players in to maximise various stages of the innings. We want the players that come in to be really clear on their roles, and what we want from them.”Knight said that the next opportunity to mesh the squad’s blend of new and old players would come with Wednesday evening’s Women’s Euros clash, with England taking on Spain in a quarter-final in Brighton.”We’re going to have a bit of a team social tonight,” Knight said. “The Lionesses are obviously playing a big match, so we’re going to get everyone together and that’ll be quite nice to bring people together as a group. We’ll obviously be in it together at training today too, but I think just keeping it simple and trying to have those conversations is going to be key.”It’s a really exciting squad, it’s quite a bold squad,” Knight added. “Exciting not just in terms of their cricket skills, but in the way they’ve gone about it. The mentality of those younger players is exactly what we want to add to our squad, and you saw it in the ODI series too, with younger players bringing that rawness and freshness.”Few are fresher than Capsey, who turns 18 in August, but whose talents were felt first-hand by Knight during a remarkable innings of 59 from 41 balls for Oval Invincibles against London Spirit at Lord’s last summer.Tammy Beaumont responded to her T20I axing with a century at Leicester•Getty Images”I was at the other end bowling and she whacked me over my head, so I certainly know what she can do,” Knight said. “She adds a little bit of all-round ability with the ball as another spin option, and she’s a 360-degree player that can score quite quickly.”The fact that Capsey was able to command such a big stage at the age of 16 is one of the reasons why England have felt able to trust their rookies in this format, to a degree that would not have been possible even two years ago. And while Knight admitted that Beaumont’s omission was bound to be a wake-up call to all the seniors within England’s ranks, she also acknowledged that it was a welcome problem to have to embrace.”It’s a huge positive,” she said. “It’s going to be really good for us as a group to have that competition. If you don’t perform, someone’s going to come in and take your place. That pressure is there for sure, but it will keep everyone on their toes, and enable us to push our standards further.”That’s what’s been very big for Australia,” Knight added. “Over the last three years or so, with young players coming through in the Big Bash, they seem to be able to slip in and perform and that means that their senior players have to perform and warrant their place too.”The Hundred and the professionalisation of the domestic game means those players are a lot more well-known when they do get the call-up. They’ve probably got a bit more experience of dealing with scrutiny, being on telly, playing in front of big crowds. It’s definitely a positive but it’s also something different to manage. So it’s important that we get to know those individuals, know what works for them, and how we can best help them to be at their best when they’re in an England shirt.”
