Irfan Pathan joins J&K in player-cum-mentor role

The 33-year-old played only two matches for Baroda in 2017-18 before being dropped from the team and removed from captaincy

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Mar-2018Irfan Pathan, the former India allrounder, has taken up a new role, that of player-cum-mentor of the Jammu & Kashmir side for the 2018-2019 domestic season. The 33-year-old has played for Baroda right through his Ranji Trophy career, but was dropped and removed as captain after two matches of the 2017-18 domestic season, in which he took two wickets and scored 88 runs.”I will play and mentor the J&K Ranji team, but will also travel to districts in a bid to unearth more talent.” Irfan told ESPNcricinfo after his appointment. “I hope to make it count and bring out the best of talent in the valley. We are having talks to organise small tournaments across the districts in April and May and want these cricketers to play not only for J&K, but also in Tests. I will mainly be with the Ranji team, but will also advise the youngsters in the cricket board’s set-up.”Irfan also said he had been eyeing a player-mentor role at Baroda – where he spent 18 years – but chose to pursue other states after there were no such opportunities available with the Baroda Cricket Associaton (BCA).”As an organisation, BCA has given me everything,” Irfan had told Sportstar. “Irfan became Irfan because of the association, but things were going out of hand. There were different yardsticks for different players,” he said. “I didn’t want to play just as a cricketer, and wanted to play the mentor role, too, but I was restricted. It’s better to leave without any animosity.”Irfan last represented India at the World T20 in Sri Lanka in 2012. At the IPL, he went unsold at the 2017 and 2018 auctions and last played top-level cricket in October 2017.J&K finished fourth in Group B of the Ranji Trophy last season, losing four of their six matches.

West Ham: Sky pundit says "really intelligent" star could now join Moyes

Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards has suggested one "really intelligent" star could end up joining David Moyes at West Ham United.

Who have West Ham signed?

The Hammers, who brought in £134 million through the summer sales of Declan Rice, Gianluca Scamacca, Nikola Vlasic and Arthur Masuaku, replaced the aforementioned with a quartet of major signings.

West Ham sealed deals for Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Mohammed Kudus during the transfer window – with two of the former starting very brightly indeed.

Alvarez has been lavished with praise by members of the media, while Ward-Prowse was very, very unlucky not to get the call-up to Gareth Southgate's England squad this international break.

"I look at James Ward-Prowse in that and think is Kalvin Phillips playing? No. Jordan Henderson left to go to Saudi Arabia and I think he’s the biggest one. He must wonder how he’s not in any squads," said former Spurs defender Michael Dawson after the Three Lions squad was announced.

“He’s always one that probably gets the call going keep doing what you’re doing but he’s been doing this for a really long time. I feel for him that he misses of because of probably Kalvin Phillips. We all know what Gareth is, he’s very, very loyal to his players that have been tried and trusted for him and never let him down.”

Ward-Prowse will indeed feel hard done by, as the Englishman has started this new Premier League campaign in fine fashion alongside his new club West Ham.

Moyes' men remain unbeaten over their first four league matches; winning three of those encounters – including wins against the likes of high-flying Brighton and big-spending Chelsea.

What's the latest West Ham transfer news?

While the Irons appear to have reinforced their squad perfectly going by their brilliant start, there are a few players they couldn't quite get seal a deal for.

That wasn't for lack of trying, as West Ham reportedly pushed hard to sign Man United defender Harry Maguire before they managed to seal a deal for Mavropanos as an alternative.

Another star they had been linked repeatedly with was United's Scott McTominay, who was reliably believed to be of serious interest to Moyes over the summer.

Scotland international Scott McTominay.

Now, Sky pundit Richards has shared a belief he has revolving the Scotsman and a possible move to West Ham.

Speaking to ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast, the former Man City defender has suggested that east London is the most likely landing spot for McTominay amid his torrid time at Old Trafford right now.

“West Ham we said, it was West Ham. Yeah," said Richards on McTominay's possible next move.

“I just think he’s a really intelligent, hard-working midfielder who can do a job whatever you tell him.

“It’s just the chaos of Manchester United or the player who they had in the past, so they are always comparing him to Keane or Scholes and it’s always going to be difficult.

“But there is a player in there, I think he’s fantastic.”

McTominay has previously been praised by Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone, who even once called him and Paul Pogba's midfield partnership the best in world football.

Confusing Newcastle Injury Update Emerges On Joelinton

Newcastle United haven't had too much to shout about of late and a bemusing injury update has now emerged, following a new claim regarding the fitness of Joelinton.

How old is Joelinton?

The Magpies have gone from firing on all cylinders to being under the spotlight for some poor form, showing how quickly fortunes can change in football. When they thrashed Aston Villa 5-1 at St James' Park on the opening weekend, Eddie Howe's side couldn't do a thing wrong, but that has changed drastically in recent weeks.

Newcastle have lost their last three Premier League games in a row, admittedly against strong opponents in Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton, and their hopes of securing back-to-back top-four finishes have suffered an early blow.

Howe's men certainly haven't been helped by injuries to some key players so far this season, with Sven Botman missing the 3-1 defeat away to the Seagulls on Saturday evening, along with Joe Willock.

Meanwhile, Joelinton, who is now in his prime at 27 years of age, has been playing, but there have been serious question marks over whether he is 100% fit, not quite enjoying the influence he did last season.

The Brazilian could arguably do with a breather during the current international break, but a new update suggests that won't be the case.

What's happening with Joelinton in Brazil?

According to Geordie Boot Boys, Joelinton is expected to play for Brazil over the next couple of weeks, despite the fact he's been sitting out of training in the build-up to Newcastle matches:

"The Brazilian picked up an injury during the defeat to Manchester City, and has not looked right ever since. He was a doubt for Saturday’s trip to Brighton, but was passed fit to start.

"However, it was clearly a mistake to pick him in the starting XI, as he had little to no impact at the Amex Stadium. The 27-year-old, who has been described as a ‘machine‘ in the past, is clearly not fully fit and it is massively hindering his performances.

"It is therefore strange that Howe has continued to select him, despite having both Sean Longstaff and Elliot Anderson on the bench. Howe will be considering changes to his midfield against Brentford, and it will be interesting to see if he persists with Joelinton amid his injury concerns. He is now set to play for Brazil during the international break, which probably won’t do his quest for full fitness any favours."

This is a very strange decision by Newcastle to allow Joelinton to head off on international duty, with a break from on-pitch action badly needed. Granted, Joelinton may be desperate to represent his country, but he risks making his current injury worse by over-playing, and it could have a negative impact on the Magpies' season if he worsens his issues when Brazil play Bolivia in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Howe will surely not be happy at all about this, but should arguably have made the decision himself to pull Joelinton out of both his own and the Brazil squad, so fans will now be waiting with bated breath in the hope that he comes through the next week or so unscathed.

The midfielder has become such a key man for Newcastle, bring power and work ethic in the middle of the park – Ally McCoist recently described him as "amazing" – so losing him for a lengthy period doesn't bear thinking about.

17 y/o Liverpool Sensation Impresses Against Bayern Munich

When a young player makes an appearance for the first team, managers will likely see a fairly timid and safe display. The player’s first thought may well be to avoid a mistake at all costs and keep things neat and tidy as they gain experience.Occasionally, however, a player comes along who is fearlessly confident. They will come into the first team, take one look at their opponents, completely disregard whether they own a Champions League winners’ medal, and charge towards them as if it is nothing. And that’s exactly the case for Ben Doak at Liverpool. The 17-year-old, not even legally an adult as of yet, has no right to be making a fool of veteran defenders. But low and behold, there he was against Bayern Munich, powerfully charging towards the Bavarians in merciless fashion. It was a cameo that left many rightfully impressed.

Ben Doak impresses against Bayern Munich

As you can see in the video, Doak leaves his first marker for dead, as they fall to the ground, leaving the Scot to sprint away, before finding Bobby Clark, who could only find the palms of Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich.

Not stopping there, Doak then made a fool of Bouna Sarr, who also lost his footing, before the Liverpool youngster slightly overhit his cross to Darwin Nunez.

His upper body strength, and power to sprint forward was particularly impressive. The fact that Doak is still only 17, and performing like that, is a frightening thought for future opposition defenders.

It’s not the first time that the Scot has impressed for the Reds, either, with Lucas Digne getting a ruthless introduction to the teenager, when he dummied the ball, leaving the Frenchman on the ground, before sprinting away.

Given his pre-season performances, something tells us that Doak could have a part to play under Jurgen Klopp in the coming season.

Previously praising the youngster, Klopp said, via Glasgow Live: “Ben Doak, obviously nice signs, he’s with us in training again. Special boy, really confident, has something nobody else delivers really, this kind of dribbling, this kind of straight-forward bravery, all these kind of things.”

Fans were suitability impressed by his latest cameo. Here are a few reactions…

How have Liverpool performed in pre-season?

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool have been an interesting watch throughout pre-season, with their attacking prowess clear for all to see, alongside their defensive struggles. The 4-3 loss against Bayern Munich arguably best summed up how their summer preparations have gone.

With three different goalscorers in the form of Cody Gakpo, Virgil van Dijk, and Luis Diaz, the Reds once again impressed in attack. Ultimately, though, they squandered a 2-0 lead, no thanks to Joel Matip, before eventually suffering a 4-3 loss. And, whilst it is still only a friendly, losing a lead is not a habit that Klopp’s side will want to get into.

They finish their pre-season with a game against Bundesliga side Darmstadt, in a game that could reveal how Liverpool will line up against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the opening day of the Premier League season.

Liverpool will certainly be an interesting watch this season, with goals expected at both ends in what could be yet another frantic campaign for those at Anfield.

Arsenal: Edu Positioned To Sign "Exceptional" Bayern Target

Arsenal are "well-placed to seal a deal" for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya who is also a target for Bayern Munich, according to reports.

Who will Arsenal sign?

Mikel Arteta will be absolutely thrilled by the summer his side have had, with the Gunners sealing a trio of marquee deals in winger Kai Havertz, defender Jurrien Timber and club-record signing Declan Rice.

Havertz put pen to paper on a £65 million switch from Chelsea and Timber's move is rumoured to have cost around £38 million, while Rice's £105m signing from West Ham makes him the most expensive Englishman in history.

It's been an historic transfer window for Arsenal and a real statement of intent, coming after they fell just short of a first league title in nearly 20 years to eventual treble-winners Man City.

Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…

However, despite having sold just Pablo Mari and Granit Xhaka so far, it is believed that sporting director Edu could add further quality to Arsenal's ranks before deadline day.

The north Londoners are in the market for a new goalkeeper to content with Aaron Ramsdale for the number one spot, with Brentford's Raya being the number one target.

Reliable media sources like Fabrizio Romano have already confirmed that the 27-year-old has reached an agreement on personal terms with Arsenal, and the club are expected accelerate talks.

A report by Football Insider and journalist Pete O'Rourke now have a promising update on the matter, claiming Arteta's side are "well-placed to seal a deal" for Raya this month.

david-raya-brentford-arsenal-transfer-gossip-arteta-edu-jurrien-timber

They say Arsenal have emerged as a possible destination for the Bees keeper "in recent days" and he is actively looking for a new challenge.

This is despite the presence of German heavyweights and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, who have Raya on their goalkeeping shortlist with Manuel Neuer out injured.

Both sides are, for now, unwilling to pay Brentford's £40 million valuation for Raya, which could be holding up the move.

Presumably, and this is just speculation, Thomas Frank's side may have to lower their asking price, especially with the keeper's deal expiring just next year and time running out to secure a decent fee for his services.

How good is David Raya?

Raya was an untouchable member of the Brentford starting eleven over 2022/2023, playing more league minutes than any other Bees player (WhoScored).

The Spaniard ranked among their top five best-performing players per 90, according to WhoScored, with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp also holding Raya in very high esteem.

The Reds head coach, speaking after his side took on Brentford in late 2021, heaped praise on the former Blackburn keeper for his distribution.

“The goalkeeper could have the shirt with No 10,” Klopp said.

“He played a few incredible balls but it was the right thing to do against us today.”

Meanwhile, Bees head coach Frank has lauded the "exceptional" keeper's "very aggressive" brand of goalkeeping.

"In terms of playing with his feet, high position, very aggressive in terms of his positioning and going for crosses, he definitely deserves this," said Frank after Raya was called up to the Spain national team.

"He's been on the radar from the Federation of Spain, I'm pleased to see him there. I think it shows definitely a lot of credit to him because there's a lot of good goalkeepers for Spain."

Everton: £100k-p/w Signing Could Revive DCL At Goodison

After securing survival on the final day of the last Premier League season, Everton will be looking to endure a slightly more stable campaign in Sean Dyche's first full year in charge at Goodison Park. And goals may be the answer to that.

The Toffees scored just 35 goals, only more than Wolverhampton Wanderers, as main man Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggled with injuries once again, missing a total of 14 games. When he was available, too, the Englishman managed to find the back of the net on just two occasions.

With that said, another forward arriving could benefit Calvert-Lewin and Everton as a whole, and, according to TuttoMercatoWeb, they have put in an offer for Leeds United forward Rodrigo this summer.

The 32-year-old didn't do enough to save Leeds last season, but he did, at least, manage to get his name on the score sheet 13 times in the Premier League, which would have made him Everton's top goalscorer last season in what could have saved them the stress of final day safety.

Transfer insider Dean Jones certainly believes that the Toffees would benefit by signing Rodrigo this summer, who could form a partnership with Calvert-Lewin. Jones told Football FanCast:

"I actually quite like the idea of a Rodrigo and Calvert-Lewin partnership. I think they could quite positively help each other.

"I know he couldn’t keep Leeds in the Premier League last season, but, ultimately, he’s a very good player. When he first came into the Premier League initially, I thought he’d do really well. And if you use him properly and not as an out-and-out nine, I think that Rodrigo could really give Everton a lot."

What role would Rodrigo play at Everton?

Rodrigo's main role at Leeds should have been supplying the goals for Patrick Bamford. But injury issues and a lack of form meant that the Englishman endured a season to forget. This is something that the Spaniard will be hoping to avoid a repeat of with Calvert-Lewin should he complete a move to Goodison Park this summer.

That may not be the case, however. At Everton, Rodrigo could be the man to finally get Calvert-Lewin back on form, who has previously thrived with a strike partner. When playing together with Richarlison in the 20/21 season, the forward scored 16 Premier League goals – his highest-ever total.

rodrigo-leeds-united-premier-league-everton-transfers

Since the Brazilian's departure to Tottenham Hotspur last summer, however, the academy graduate has found the back of the net just twice, albeit with injuries contributing to this.

Rodrigo can replicate that Richarlison impact, however, helping to revive Calvert-Lewin.

When compared to the 20/21 version of the forward, the Leeds United man made more progressive passes per 90, and, like the current Spurs man, made over two shot-creating actions per game, according to FBref. So, the evidence is there that Dyche can form a solid offensive partnership next season.

The £100k-per-week Rodrigo has certainly earned a lot of praise, too, with Sky Sports' Aaron McLean saying during Leeds' victory over Norwich in 2022: "Rodrigo was a livewire in that first half.”

We've seen in the past that strike partnerships can become the key to success for a Dyche side, with a Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes duo helping Burnley to unexpected heights.

Rodrigo and Calvert-Lewin can become the next great duo under Dyche, should the former make the move this summer.

Leeds Could Sign £8m-rated Tyler Adams Partner

Leeds United's relegation from the Premier League was a frustrating one given the talent within their squad, as it was believed that they had the requisite quality across the pitch to avoid the drop.

However, in the end, it was not standout poor performances that resulted in their Championship return, but instead questionable decisions from the hierarchy that had led to this catastrophic moment.

The sacking of Marcelo Bielsa should have ushered in a fresh new era at Elland Road, and yet in an effort to mimic what had clearly begun to go stale, the appointment of Jesse Marsch marked the beginning of the end.

He may have guided them to safety, but the season following he had to go. Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce could not undo the havoc he had wreaked on this squad, that boasted the goalscoring talents of Rodrigo and the midfield magnificence of Tyler Adams.

Whilst the former has been destined to depart for some time, should the 49ers tempt the USA international to give them one more year, he could be the catalyst that secures them instant promotion.

Especially if they are to pair him with Harry Winks, who reports have suggested the Whites are interested in. That said, they would have to hijack any proposed deal on the table that Leicester have, with the Foxes looking set to procure his signature.

Would Harry Winks improve Leeds United?

As a safe and steady presence in the engine room, his calming demeanour could complement the all-action style of Adams.

After all, both have enjoyed solid campaigns in England at some point in their careers, with the 24-year-old American's having only come last term. His 6.98 average rating was upheld through one key pass and 3.7 tackles per game (via Sofascore), outlining his presence all over the pitch.

tyler-adams-leeds-united

When given the opportunity, this touch-tackling maestro can be just as influential in attack as he can in screening the back four.

It is these qualities that suggest someone like Winks would be the perfect partner for him, with his loan spell in Italy serving to prove this. Whilst hardly outstanding in any area of the game, it is this versatility that could allow Adams to operate wherever he sees fit, knowing that his partner will cover for him.

In the Serie A, the 27-year-old Englishman maintained an 85% pass accuracy in the engine room, alongside 1.2 interceptions, 1.4 tackles, one clearance and 0.8 key passes per game, via Sofascore.

His pass accuracy would actually make him the most accurate passer within the Leeds squad from last season. Such devotion to doing the dirty work saw him deserving of the title of a "top professional", bestowed upon him by pundit Paul Robinson.

The £8m-rated general's arrival could prove instrumental in actually tempting the former RB Leipzig star to stick around in Yorkshire, as it would be a show of faith to the importance he would hold for the new season.

After all, having been branded a "monster" in the past by former pro Alexi Lalas, with Winks beside him he could surely recapture this form in the Championship with ease.
