Rain wrecks game after Ben Duckett's maiden ODI ton

Water under covers forces hasty abandonment with England eyeing batting records in Bristol

Vithushan Ehantharajah26-Sep-2023England 280 for 4 (Duckett 107*, Salt 61, Crawley 51) vs Ireland – Match abandonedEngland claimed a 1-0 ODI series win against Ireland in farcical circumstances after the third ODI at Bristol was abandoned 31 overs into the first innings due to rain, with water also getting onto the pitch.England had reached 280 for 4, with Ben Duckett striking a maiden ODI to build on a fast start by Phil Salt, who blitzed 61 off 28 at the top of the order, before the rain arrived during the drinks break at 2.48pm. After a brief pause to see if it would pass, the umpires decided to call on the groundstaff. There was a further issue when the covers were caught in the wind leaving the pitch exposed, before the three mobile covers came on from Ashley Down Road End. The tractor dragging the covers ended up driving down what would have been just outside off stump for a right-hander batting from the Pavilion End. There was also a delay in closing the gaps between the covers allowing the rain to get onto the playing surface.Members of the groundstaff then had to squeeze under the covers where they were passed mats to towel down the damaged areas at both ends. Standing umpire Paul Reiffel and third umpire Rod Tucker emerged with reserve umpire David Millns at around 3.15pm to survey the damage. After looking under the covers, and assessing the standing water on the square, the decision was made to call off the match at 3.21pm. The rain relented five minutes later. An overnight deluge had saturated the outfield, but although play did get underway on time at 12.30pm, fears the ground could not take any more rain were eventually realised.”It caught everyone by surprise,” Zak Crawley, England’s captain for this series, said. “The ground was already a bit wet this morning after the rain that happened last night, so it didn’t need a lot more rain to get abandoned like that. And obviously a lot of rain fell in not a long space of time.”I went on the outfield just now and it was soaking wet as well. I think it was all unfit.”Ireland skipper Paul Stirling echoed those sentiments, having initially hoped the delay would allow his side to turn their fortunes around after a chastening start in the field.”I think we were all pretty happy when the rain came, but we weren’t quite expecting it to end the game,” he said. “We thought we might get a bit of a break or a bit of a rest and try and regroup and come out there and change it up a little bit. But no, we weren’t expecting the game to be called off.Heavy rain forced an abrupt abandonment•Getty Images”We were having a bit of a joke up there [in the dressing room], I think we’re more used to it in Ireland because there is more rain probably. We haven’t really come across that in England where it was so sudden. We wanted to get out there.”This was the fourth consecutive men’s ODI abandoned at Bristol, following a 2021 no-result against Sri Lanka and two of their three 2019 World Cup matches (Pakistan versus Sri Lanka and Bangladesh versus Sri Lanka) washed out without a ball being bowled. Gloucestershire chief executive Will Brown lamented what he regarded as an unavoidable situation given the volume of rain in the last 24 hours.”We always had the sense that if we had something similar to last night, 20-30 minutes of rain could be what killed it off. You can see all along the bottom of the square the water is running off in big puddles.”It is just gutting. We’ve had our fair share of rain offs such as in World Cups and you wonder if we give it a bit longer maybe it can dry out, but it is what it is. The umpires and the match ref know what they are doing, the groundstaff are working their backsides off to get it right.”Brown defended the response from the groundstaff, who struggled to fully cover the pitch and surrounding areas in challenging conditions.”It was hard conditions for them. You could see by how the covers were moving that it was pretty tough for them. It is one thing getting the covers on speedily, but in those conditions it is a different ball game altogether. They were certainly heavy and wet from this morning.”No one wants to see a match end in that way and we are just collectively gutted for a season-ender for English cricket like that and a season-ender for Gloucestershire in Bristol.”The conditions last night were shocking. The covers were heavy and wet, and they were trying to move them in tough conditions. It was blowing a hooley, which makes it a lot harder to move. I think they did and admirable job in difficult circumstances.”In what play was possible, England had been given a bumper start by Salt on his way to his country’s fourth-fastest half-century in the format, from 22 deliveries. He crashed three fours and a six off Mark Adair in the first four balls of the match, with 19 off the first over and, thanks to his 87-run stand with Will Jacks, 100 up after eight overs – both England records in this format.Duckett had brought up three figures with a six over wide long-off from his 72nd delivery, the penultimate ball of the 30th over. And though Sam Hain fell to Craig Young – the most impressive Irish bowler on show with 3 for 31 – at the end of the next over, Duckett had a shot at becoming England’s first double-centurion and, in turn, the team an outside chance of beating their world-record ODI score of 498 for 8, made against Netherlands last year. Neither got the chance to play out.It was a tough debut for Ireland’s left-arm spinner Theo van Woerkom, who conceded 47 runs in his four overs. That included having his last four balls hit for 16 by Duckett to bring up England’s 250 after 27 overs. Van Woerkom did at least emerge from the wreckage with a maiden wicket when Crawley scythed a wide delivery to third after bringing up his maiden ODI fifty. However, for the second time in the series the rain curtailed any prospects of a result. With more than 30 overs of play achieved, spectators were not entitled to a refund.”It worries me greatly that this is a sign of things to come,” Brown said, looking ahead to next summer with Bristol due to host an ODI between England and Australia on September 29.”We’ve got a lot of cricket being played in September next year and with climate change we’ve seen heavy rain in June and July, and I think the game needs to be thinking innovatively about how we get games on or prepare pitches and surfaces using different things to get cricket away.”

CWC Watchability Guide: From PSG's high-octane style to Atletico Madrid's sleep-inducing play to Lionel Messi being Messi, must-see and must-miss teams – ranked

GOAL US offers a guide to which Club World Cup teams you'll want to tune in for – and who might be best to avoid

There are a lot of games to watch at the Club World Cup – 63, crammed into 29 days, to be exact. The trick will be to figure out exactly which ones you watch. Of course, the latter stages of the tournament will be good fun, with European teams likely facing each other in a mock Champions League of sorts.

But what about in the early days, the group stage play where two clubs you might not have ever heard of square off against each other? There are actually loads of reasons to tune into the so-called smaller teams. Equally, there is good reason to avoid some of the bigger names (looking at you, Juventus).

GOAL US presents the Club World Cup Watchability Guide, with some advice as to who to tune into – and who might be best to avoid.

  • AFP

    Drop everything now and watch

PSG: All the evidence you need was on display a couple weeks ago. PSG battered Inter in the Champions League final, and, truthfully, they've been doing that all season. Desire Doue alone is worth a watch, but add Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia into the mix, and you've got the most exciting side in Europe, bar none.

Real Madrid: Will it be a debacle? Will it be slick attacking football? Who knows? Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen played some wonderful stuff, and the new Madrid manager has made all of the right noises about wanting to look good on the pitch. But this is an imbalanced squad with all sorts of defensive concerns. It will be worth tuning in either way to see if Kylian Mbappe decides to run or not.

Inter Miami: Any chance to watch Lionel Messi play football is a gift. There won't be loads of it left. Even at 37, he can still do some pretty incredible things with a ball.

Palmeiras: Want to know who will be tearing up Europe within three years? Watch Palmeiras. For now, they've got Estevao, hastily named "the next Messi." That's a bit of an overreaction, but the teenager, who is now on Chelsea's books, has routinely broken the Internet. Let's see what he can do with the world watching.

    Will put on a show

Bayern Munich: Everything about Bayern's squad suggests they really should be flashier. This is a loaded squad with some big names, and Vincent Kompany likes to have the ball. But they're not always fluid. Still, with the pace they have on the wings – and Harry Kane in the middle – they will always put on a bit of a show.

Chelsea: Two words – Cole Palmer. When he's on song, he makes this game look easy, all clever turns and changes of direction. There's something to be said, too, for a team that misses chances for fun.

River Plate: River score a lot and concede even more. If teenage sensation Franco Mastantuono turns it on for his last month at the club, River will be a fine watch.

Mamelodi Sundowns: First clue – they're nicknamed "The Brazilians" for their samba style. Will they have to deal with having a bit less of the ball at times? Sure. But the Sundowns have scored 65 goals in 28 games this season. That's not a bad mark.

Manchester City: While City are a really good team, they're not always a great watch. On talent alone, they're worth tuning in for, but they really should play exciting stuff.

    Better than nothing

Inter: Can the remains of a series of talented midfield get the band back together, one last time? Inter, at their fluid best, are undoubtedly wonderful to tune into. That magic might be fading, though.

Dortmund: Bunch of young players, manager who likes to have the ball, what can go wrong? Issue is, Dortmund aren't always very good, which rather dampens things.

Fluminense: Thiago Silva is there, and Renato Gaucho insists that his team at least try to entertain. One problem: the attack hasn't quite found its rhythm yet, and the club hasn't invested loads.

Seattle Sounders: Well, Seattle certainly aren't afraid to concede. But they like scoring, too. Issue is, you don't know which version of the team you're going to get.

A toss-up with the Netflix show you're rewatching for the third time

Porto: There's no way to spin it – Porto were bad last year. A managerial change halfway through didn't help, and they certainly lost some vibes after veteran defender Pepe departed. Samu Aghehowa, who was a real presence up front, might be the only redeeming factor.

Benfica: Another Portuguese side that didn't quite figure it out, Benfica might have been higher if it wasn't for the departure of Angel Di Maria, who is always a good watch.

Botafogo: They went about their Copa Libertadores-Brzilian Serie A double in dramatic fashion last year, winning South America's premier competition after going down to 10 men within the first minute. That didn't require beautiful football, but it was certainly a captivating watch. Issue is, a lot of that team has departed now.

Monterrey: Sergio Ramos is cool. That's about it.

Al Hilal: Depends on what you're looking for, really. They have some talented European vets, and Simeone Inzaghi is the coach now. The problem? Saudi Pro League football isn't a great watch. TBD…

  • WHAT SHAY GIVEN SAID

Ex-Manchester City goalkeeper Given – with the Blues another of the sides with Club World Cup glory in their sights – told GOAL when asked who will prove the stiffest opposition to Pep Guardiola’s star-studded outfit: “I don’t know too much about the teams from the other continents, but I imagine it will be a team from Europe that will be the biggest favourites to win it.

“I think PSG were unreal in the Champions League – it was five and could have been eight or nine, that’s how dominant they were. They will have enjoyed the celebrations afterwards, but can they recover and go again? I imagine they will be big favourites to win it.

“Real Madrid, with the history they have in competitions as a club, and Trent Alexander-Arnold has just gone there – paid money to get him early for this competition, so that’s how much it means to them. Manchester City and Chelsea are involved as well, Premier League clubs, we would like to see them do well.”

Kohli on du Plessis-Maxwell stand: 'One of the best counterattacking partnerships I have seen'

He was also effusive in his praise for Siraj and Harshal, and said Hazlewood’s return would turn RCB into “a completely different bowling unit”

Ekanth23-Apr-20233:00

What’s making Maxwell click at RCB?

On Sunday, Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell put on their third century stand of IPL 2023 to help Royal Challengers Bangalore defeat Rajasthan Royals by seven runs. RCB’s stand-in captain Virat Kohli has rated their 127-run stand in this game higher than the 126 they put on against Chennai Super Kings. The reason? Conditions.”I think this counterattack was even better than [the one in the] Chennai game,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation. “Because, the Chennai game, the conditions were brilliant to bat on, but today, I got out first ball, so that pushed us back a little bit; then Shahbaz [Ahmed] tried to get going [but] he got out, and then the pitch wasn’t so easy.”The way Maxi came out and batted was unbelievable. He took the game away from the opposition within a span of four overs. And then Faf followed suit as well, their partnership was just amazing. One of the best counterattacking partnerships I have seen, especially given the conditions.”I know [in] evening games, we’ve seen a lot of these [partnerships]. But to bat in those conditions with the ball getting scuffed up and the pitch getting slower, that was the difference in the game eventually.”Du Plessis’ dismissal sparked a slump that saw RCB slide from 139 for 2 to an eventual total of 189 for 9, scoring only 33 runs in the last five overs, but Kohli said the third-wicket partnership gave them enough of a cushion to put them at ease.”We thought, at one stage, 160 might be enough but because of how they batted,” Kohli said. “We could get to 190 and be a little more comfortable even though we had to defend under lights, as I said, for the second-half of their innings. So, it was that partnership that completely put us in a commanding position in the game.”Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis counterattacked after joining forces at 12 for 2•Associated PressThe value of those extra runs was further inflated by Mohammed Siraj knocking over Jos Buttler in the first over. Kohli ordained Siraj as the leader of Royal Challengers’ attack in the absence of Josh Hazlewood, who is expected to return from injury for their next game, against Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday.”Phenomenal. We know that he [Siraj] has gotten him [Buttler] in the past as well,” Kohli said. “He’s bowling as well as I’ve ever seen him bowl. Running in with that new ball, you can see that body language, that intent that he has, any pitch that he’s bowling at, any conditions, he believes that he can pick up wickets and he is. He has the Purple Cap and there is a good reason for it. He’s leading our attack for now until Josh comes in, hopefully next game, and he’s done an absolutely tremendous job and I’m super happy to see him bowl like this.”Despite Siraj’s early success and a middle-overs slowdown Royals were in with a chance to win. They even scored 60 runs in the last five overs. But that was not enough, as Harshal Patel stepped up with Royals needing 20 in the final over.”He’s kind of built a reputation but we’re playing in Chinnaswamy regularly,” Kohli said of Harshal. “We know it’s not an easy ground to bowl at, and you have to look at the fact that he has to bowl the tough overs, he doesn’t have the new ball in hand, he doesn’t have those middle overs to bowl, he always comes in and bowls the tough overs.””So you’re going to get hit at times but he’s a guy who is very smart. He understands his game well, and for him to bowl like that and close the game out is a really good thing. He did that against Delhi as well, bowled really well. So, yeah, a couple of games in a row, he’s done well, and that augurs well for the team.”Hazlewood’s return, Kohli added, would strengthen RCB’s attack even further.”As I said, if Hazlewood is fit and comes back in, then we’ll look like a completely different bowling unit with how we’re batting as well. I think that’s gonna give us a lot of confidence.”

FSG must cash in on 4/10 Liverpool dud who earns more than Diaz & Elliott

Liverpool are probably the best team in the world right now, certainly considered the team to beat in the Premier League title race and perhaps in the Champions League too, winning the group phase at a canter.

Arne Slot is a sharp tactical mind and his start to life at Anfield has been remarkable, but he’s not infallible. This was evidenced by much-rotated Liverpool’s defeat by Plymouth Argyle in the fourth round of the FA Cup. The Championship’s bottom-placed side deserved their win.

The harsh reality is that several first-teamers have been riding on the coattails of Slot’s superstars this season: Mohamed Salah, Ryan Gravenberch, Virgil van Dijk etc.

Champions League passage was secured with a game to go last month, and so Slot issued plenty of changes for the culminating fixture against PSV Eindhoven. Liverpool showed spirit but lost.

Against the Pilgrims, Liverpool’s fringe players were sent packing with their tails between their legs, with their futures under question again.

The players that might be leaving Slot's Liverpool

Let’s forget about Liverpool’s encroaching contract-related culminations for the moment – such outcomes will become clearer in the coming months.

Slot boasts an immense first team at Liverpool, but there’s a genuine question as to whether Liverpool have sufficient depth beneath the surface level, with the Reds flattering to deceive from start to finish.

Looking beyond the pressing contract concerns, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson will soon enter the final year of their deals, and efforts need to be ramped up in tying them down.

Caoimhin Kelleher is in the same boat, albeit he’s expected to depart at the end of the term given that Liverpool have signed Giorgi Mamardashvili (currently on loan with Valencia) to rival Alisson Becker between the sticks.

Liverpool's CaoimhinKelleher

Plymouth were resilient and, frankly, they wanted it more in the FA Cup. The likes of Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott were among the worst performers, with their talent and standing in Slot’s squad surely making them perfect to take such a game by the scruff of its neck and push Liverpool away from a giant-killing. They did not.

Elliott, 21, has been linked with a move away in recent months after his peripheral role this term, but his future surely lies in Merseyside.

However, the 28-year-old Diaz is blowing hot and cold too often and will step into his penultimate year next year. Liverpool might want to cash in while they can.

FSG should sell £12m Liverpool talent

Diaz is not the only one, though. Liverpool should extend veteran Robertson’s deal, but must still strengthen at left-back to mitigate his load. That means that Kostas Tsimikas must be sold.

Tsimikas has been a loyal servant for Liverpool, never complaining despite spending large portions, if not the entirety, of his career as second fiddle, behind Robertson.

However, the Greece international has had chances to shine since leaving Olympiakos for a £12m fee in August 2020, one year after Alberto Moreno left Merseyside at the end of his contract.

He’s racked up 18 assists over 107 appearances, though this only averages 21.4 outings per campaign, a figure that is distorted slightly by the current campaign still being completed.

There have been some high moments, to be sure. The nature of Tsimikas’ covering role in the Liverpool squad means that he has played a big part in the three domestic cup triumphs over the past five years, actually whipping the last-gasp corner into Van Dijk’s path to win Liverpool the Carabao Cup against Chelsea last season.

The left-back’s biggest strength lies in the quality of his deliveries, ranking among the top 12% of full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 9% for shot-creating actions and the top 3% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

However, he has glaring deficiencies in his skill set, namely relating to dribbling and positional virtues. If Robertson is to remain at Liverpool beyond his current, soon-to-expire contract, the 28-year-old Tsimikas will have to go.

His Premier League career has never seen a sustained run of starts across the campaign, albeit playing relatively last term as Robertson battled with injury problems.

Pocketing a healthy salary of £75k per week, Tsimikas remarkably earns more than aforementioned players Diaz and Elliott and arguably plays a less important role than both of them.

Neither forward produced a great performance during the recent FA Cup exit against Plymouth, but Tsimikas was just as culpable, failing to grasp what was a crucial fixture for him to prove to Slot that he deserves a big role over the business months of the season.

This is Anfield branded the Greek defender with a 4/10 score, noting that he had blown a big chance given that Robertson has restored his first-choice status over the past few weeks.

As per Sofascore, he lost the ball 22 times and failed with nine of his ten attempted crosses, unable to summon the best part of his skill set when it mattered.

Liverpool are in the market for a new left-back, report The Athletic, and given that FSG will not want to have three senior left-backs in the ranks and Robertson, 30, is still capable of playing a big part in the team, it may well be time for Tsimikas to leave for pastures new.

Forget Quansah: Liverpool have already sold a "complete" Van Dijk heir

Liverpool still haven’t reached a positive conclusion to their long-dragging contract issues.

Arsenal have been dealt a blow ahead of their Champions League semi-final second leg, as PSG’s latest medical update on Dembele strongly suggests the former will be fit to feature. The club described his condition as “progressing well,” a phrase that hints at his availability for the crucial clash, boosting Paris Saint-Germain’s attacking options at a pivotal moment.

The Frenchman, according to journalist Fabrice Hawkins, was absent from team training on Thursday and was confirmed to be unavailable for this weekend's Ligue 1 clash against Strasbourg. Since the extent of Dembele's hamstring issue was unknown, there were fears in the French capital that their talisman might not feature in next week's return leg at Parc des Princes.

However, PSG officially released a new update on Dembele, which will come as a huge boost to Les Parisiens' ambitions of reaching their first Champions League final since 2020. "Ousmane Dembele has strained his right hamstring. His condition is progressing well. A further assessment will be carried out shortly," the medical report read.

Better than Beto: Everton could seal D-day swoop for £18m "monster"

Everton need a new centre-forward. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is injured once again and has hardly been a pillar of strength this season, and Armando Broja’s loan spell is in danger of being severed after the Albanian sustained an ankle injury.

Beto, at least, has found his shooting boots, blasting two shots into the goal as David Moyes recorded his third straight victory in a 4-0 drubbing over Leicester City.

But Beto alone cannot uphold the focal striking role at Goodison Park. Everton are looking to bring someone in before tonight’s transfer deadline, but will The Friedkin Group manage to get the task done?

Everton's search for a striker

Last week, reports surfaced that Nottingham Forest number nine Taiwo Awoniyi is an option for Everton heading into the final stretch of the January transfer window.

We’re now hours away from the window’s closure and the Toffees have still not signed a striker, but time is indeed ticking and Awoniyi could be the man for the job, especially since he’s playing second fiddle in Nuno Espirito Santo’s system.

The 27-year-old has a wealth of Premier League experience and boasts the athletic qualities that Moyes typically covets at centre-forward. A loan deal would surely be put forth but Forest would ideally look to recoup £18m for their forward.

Why Everton want Taiwo Awoniyi

The 33-year-old Chris Wood decided to turn into prime Alan Shearer this season and thus Awoniyi’s playing time at the City Ground has been limited.

Still. He’s an excellent marksman and would bring the physicality and clinical edge that Moyes’ system requires. Having proven his prolific ability in the Premier League, the Nigerian “monster of an athlete” – as he has been described by journalist David Hundeyin – would be the perfect player to jockey with the likes of Beto.

As per FBref, he even ranks among the top 10% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for tackles (1.22) per 90, emphasising a deep-seated tenacity and drive to aid his team across the different phases of a match.

Moyes, to be sure, will relish such a complete and ranged skill set, with such qualities apt to see him take the mantle as Everton’s star striker, surpassing Calvert-Lewin and Beto.

Beto, conversely, has struggled, with his recent two-goal haul against the Foxes raising the previous tally of four from 44 Premier League appearances.

It’s worth noting that Awoniyi has also missed just 16 big chances for the Tricky Trees across his three campaigns, scoring 17 total goals. This is the marker of a high-class goalscorer, converting more than often than squandering his chances.

Transfer Focus

Last season, Beto only managed to bag three Premier League goals despite missing eight big chances. The Guinea-Bissau international has taken the first steps toward enjoying a purple patch but his Everton history suggests he’s not consistent enough to lead the line over the business months, and Awoniyi could neatly solve the problem.

Blair Tickner and Ben Sears cut through Netherlands as New Zealand defend 148

Bas de Leede made an impressive 66 but the rest of the batting struggled

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Aug-2022Blair Tickner and Ben Sears shared seven wickets as New Zealand overcame a spirited Netherlands display to claim the first T20I in The Hague.New Zealand had to work hard to post 148 for 7 as the home side’s spinners made life tricky with Jimmy Neesham’s 32 off 17 providing important late impetus.Tickner then knocked over Netherlands’ top order, which included the ungainly dismissal of Max O’Dowd who was left flat in the crease after trying to scoop, as they slipped to 15 for 3 in the fourth over.Bas de Leede and captain Scott Edwards brought some stability with a stand of 49 to keep Netherlands in the hunt, but the partnership was broken when Glenn Phillips added another entry to his fielding highlights reel with a superb swooping catch in the deep to claim Edwards.Sears then caused problems with his pace, finding the top of Teja Nidamanuru with keeper Dave Cleaver jumping to take another smart catch. At 93 for 7 the game was just about done and it was too much for de Leede to overhaul despite his fine hand of 66 off 53 balls which ended in the final over to give Tickner his fourth.New Zealand had not been able to stamp their authority with the bat with Finn Allen, despite one six, not getting going in the powerplay which saw them 33 for 2 after six overs. They had only moved as far as 60 for 2 at the halfway mark and by the 15th over that had become an uncertain 95 for 5 with legspinner Shariz Ahmad removing Daryl Mitchell and Phillips – the latter to a sharp caught-and-bowled – while Martin Guptill had picked out deep square having anchored the innings. The momentum changed in the 17th over when Neesham took Logan van Beek for 22 including two sixes although he fell to the last ball of the over. Ish Sodhi then helped take 20 from the 19th over included a brace of sixes for himself.Between them Netherlands’ spinners took 4 for 80 from their 12 overs with Ahmad and Tim Pringle particularly impressive. The second and final T20I takes place on Friday.
