The happy hooker

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s instinct told him, while he was looking on from the dressing room yesterday, that Australia was there for the taking

Some players have an instinct that tells them when a team is there for the taking. Mahendra Singh Dhoni knew, looking on from the dressing room yesterday, that Australia was that team. Whenever a batsman hit a few boundaries Ricky Ponting would push his field back and the bowlers would bowl wide outside off stump. The tactics caused the run flow to ebb, and Australia escaped being dominated.Dhoni, however, came in to bat determined to dominate. He was aided by Ishant Sharma, who got Australia’s attack in bouncer-bowling mood with his stubborn defence – and got out to one, in fact. Dhoni’s first delivery came from Brett Lee, who charged in, bowled short and watched the ball speed off the bat towards the square-leg boundary. Peter Siddle tried his luck with a bouncer in the next over; Dhoni got inside the line and hooked it from in front of his face over the long-leg boundary.Dhoni had laid out his agenda for all to see, and he was a brave man for doing so. He began his innings with India in danger of being bowled out for a below-par total on a terrific batting pitch. Dhoni’s critics don’t recognise him as a reliable Test batsman; it was only his second Test as captain and the extra responsibility could have justified a safer approach had he wanted to adopt one. However, Sourav Ganguly wasn’t finding it easy to score steadily and so Dhoni needed to take charge. He ruined Australia’s satisfactory start by unsettling them. They tried to retort to his happy hooking with more short deliveries and two men on the leg-side boundary, but got more hooks in return. One time, when he was in no position to either hook or duck, Dhoni merely stood still and took the blow, from Lee, on his body. He did not flinch.Australia’s innovative fields did not come into play for Dhoni, for he was hitting the ball so hard that positions such as short midwicket or silly mid-on were fraught with danger. He took his chances against the only close catcher, a leg gully, and was lucky, pulling just to the left of the fielder on one occasion. In due time, after four short balls had disappeared for a six and three fours, Australia revised their plan against Dhoni. They tried to contain him by taking pace off the ball but by then he was well set, on 26 off 22 balls. His last substantial innings had been at The Oval in 2007. He had scored 92 then, and his hitting in that match had been just as clean.Dhoni scored 92 out of the 158 runs India scored today. He managed to add 31 with tailenders who weren’t half as motivated as they had been in Bangalore. In this Test, despite being captain, he was the batsman whose head was the least cluttered.

BPL week one: Shakib vs Tamim, Babar's heroics, eight successful chases and more

Shoriful Islam took the first hat-trick of his T20 career, as new franchise Durdanto Dhaka started with a win

Mohammad Isam24-Jan-2024Comilla Victorians rounded it up with a thrilling four-wicket win against Fortune Barishal in Mirpur. The match finished only off the penultimate delivery, though Imrul Kayes had led the chase with 52 from 41 balls before Matthew Forde smashed Khaled Ahmed for a four and six in the final over.Meanwhile, Khulna Tigers turned out to be the table-toppers due to a better net run rate over Chattogram Challengers, who have played a game more than Khulna. In their second match of the season, Khulna hunted down 188 in a convincing chase against Barishal.Related

They had eight wickets and two overs to spare when Shai Hope hit the winning boundary. Hope, who played a cameo of an unbeaten 25 from 10 balls, combined brilliantly with Evin Lewis and Anamul Haque in Khulna’s big win. While Anamul got a composed 63 not out off 44 deliveries, Lewis thrashed 53 from only 22, with 50 of those runs coming in boundaries.Durdanto Dhaka, this season’s only new franchise, started by beating defending champions Comilla in the tournament opener. For Durdanto, Player of the Match Shoriful Islam took the first hat-trick of his T20 career, after which Mohammad Naim hit 52 off 40 balls. On the second day of the season, Barishal’s successful chase of 135 against Rangpur Riders had gone into the final over the match. That included a mini-battle of its own. Bangladesh seniors Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal faced off for the first time since Shakib called Tamim “childish” last September. But all the anticipation only resulted in a dud battle. Tamim managed just five runs from the first seven balls he faced from Shakib, who was dismissed for 2 earlier in the day.Mushfiqur Rahim got over a hundred runs in the first week•BPL

But Rangpur hit back just days later when they reduced Sylhet Strikers to 39 for 5. Sylhet recovered through Benny Howell and Ben Cutting to post 120, and even avenged it with the ball by having Rangpur at 39 for 6. But Babar Azam, reportedly the most expensive signing in this season’s BPL, got Rangpur home with a half-century, and an undefeated stand of 88 with Azmatullah Omarzai. That left Sylhet as the only winless side in the competition so far.

Batter of the week

While both Mushfiqur Rahim and Kayes got over a hundred runs in the first week, Anamul Haque’s unbeaten 63 against Barishal stood out as the best innings from the first eight games. Anamul is often talked about as a lost talent, but he has consistently scored runs in the BPL and the domestic competitions. His half-century came right after Lewis had lit up the powerplay, even as he played a steady hand in the successful chase of 188, which was completed by Hope slamming three consecutive boundaries.

Bowler of the week

Nahidul Islam has often been a match-winner in the BPL. He took four wickets for Khulna against Chattogram, before bowling another tight spell against Barishal by conceding just 23 runs in four overs.Against Chattogram, Nahidul took the first three wickets, including those of Avishka Fernando and Tanzid Hasan, and came back to pick his fourth when he removed Najibullah Zadran. Nahidul has remained economical, with his economy rate at just 4.38 after bowling eight overs across two matches.

Mats Hummels revels in 'perfect' Borussia Dortmund farewell as team-mate left 'a little sad' that Germany hero's career is over

It was a night of raw emotion as Mats Hummels made his final appearance as a footballer, receiving a perfect farewell from Borussia Dortmund and fans.

  • Will now be a Champions League pundit

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Hummels played his final match for Borussia Dortmund in a friendly against Juventus, receiving a rapturous send-off from the home crowd. The star defender, who captained the team, was substituted in the 19th minute for Niklas Sule to a guard of honour from both sets of players at a packed Signal Iduna Park. The match ended in a 2-1 defeat for Dortmund, with Andrea Cambiaso's brace securing the win for Juventus before Maximilian Beier scored a late consolation.

Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel revealed Hummels was “incredibly emotional” before the game, noting his professionalism and leadership throughout his career. Coach Niko Kovac, who previously worked with Hummels at Bayern Munich, said it was “only natural” to hand him the armband for his farewell appearance.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The friendly served as a fitting tribute to Hummels, who announced his retirement earlier this year after a brief stint with AS Roma. The veteran centre-back enjoyed a decorated career with Dortmund across two spells, winning two Bundesliga titles and two DFB-Pokals. He reflected on his farewell, stating "It was perfect. I couldn't have imagined it being any better." His departure marks the end of an era for the German club, where he is the second-highest appearance maker with 508 games.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Dortmund goalkeeper Kobel told : "He was definitely more nervous today. I noticed that before the game. He was incredibly emotional. I think you could tell at the beginning that he still had to settle in a bit – the first three or four minutes. But then he did a truly outstanding job.

"He always wanted to be successful. That's how I got to know him. When I first came here, he helped me a lot when I was a new player. He welcomed the players, helped, supported, and always wanted to be successful. So, he's a great guy who had a great career, and I'm a little sad for him that it's over now. But I'm glad he had another chance to say goodbye here, because he deserved it."

Dortmund coach Kovac said: "I had him in Munich and know the merits he has here at BVB. Ultimately, it was only natural that he should play as captain here, that he should once again get what he deserves because of the great things he has achieved here."

    WHAT NEXT FOR HUMMELS?

While his playing career is over, Hummels is set to transition into a new role as a TV pundit for Amazon Prime Video, covering the Champions League. He has also expressed a desire for more private life and family time. Hummels hinted that his connection to the club will continue, joking that he will make an "incognito visit to the stands, 100 percent."

Além do Campeonato Gaúcho, o Grêmio terá a Copa do Brasil e Campeonato Brasileiro.

According to , Juventus have made an approach to Al-Ahli to explore a possible deal for Kessie. The Ivorian midfielder is eager to leave Saudi Arabia and return to Serie A, where he previously excelled for Atalanta and AC Milan.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Roma were the first to express interest, but Juve have now entered the picture and are reportedly considering including Nico Gonzalez in the deal to tempt Al-Ahli. Kessie joined Al-Ahli from Barcelona in 2023 for €12.5 million (£10.5m/$14m) and has a contract until 2026. However, with no plans to extend his stay and a desire to return to Italy, the situation is evolving quickly. The Bianconeri see him as a potential boost to their midfield but must navigate a tricky financial situation, mainly his €18m (£16m/$21m) salary, which remains a significant hurdle.

DID YOU KNOW?

The 28-year-old, nicknamed “the President” during his time at Milan, is seen by Juventus as a potential replacement for midfielders expected to leave this summer. Despite spending just one year in the Saudi Pro League, he is reportedly unhappy with life there. Throughout his career, Kessie has played under top managers like Gian Piero Gasperini and Xavi, adding valuable experience to his profile.

The Bianconeri are expected to continue talks with Al-Ahli over the coming weeks. If the Ivorian agrees to reduce his salary demands or if Al-Ahli contribute to the financial package, a return to Serie A could be sealed before the new season begins. Much now depends on how negotiations over both Kessie and Nico Gonzalez develop.

Superchargers triumph in North derby as women's Hundred delivers another nail-biter

Northern Superchargers moved level on points with Southern Brave at the top of the Women’s Hundred standings after Alice Davidson-Richards held her nerve take two wickets in the final five balls to defeat Manchester Originals by four runs in a rain-affected match at Headingley. The home side had posted 133 for five off their hundred balls, only to see that target reduced to 113 off 80 by a prolonged shower. Fine batting by Emma Lamb, who made 49, seemed to have given Originals a chance of reaching that target but Fi Morris was caught on the deep square-leg boundary by Linsey Smith off Davidson-Richards, trying to hit the six that would have won the game.In the first innings of the day, Originals gained their first success with the score on 27 when Jemimah Rodrigues was caught at deep midwicket by Katie George off Mahika Gaur for nine. Phoebe Litchfield then took fours off three successive balls from Deandra Dottin but Marie Kelly was run out for 22 off the next delivery when she was sent back by Litchfield and beaten by Morris’ throw from the point boundary. However, Litchfield and Hollie Armitage then took the score to 84 and it looked as though Originals would regret Dottin’s error when she dropped Litchfield off Amanda-Jane Wellington when the batter had made 24.It was left to Orginals’ skipper Sophie Ecclestone to take a much-needed wicket when she clung on to a fierce drive from Litchfield and removed the Australian for a 29-ball 39 that had included six fine boundaries.Armitage sought to increase the run rate but was caught by wicketkeeper Ellie Threlkeld for 17 when she top-edged an attempted slog-sweep off Morris. Bess Heath hit the first six of the innings when she pulled George into the Western Terrace but was then caught at point by Laura Wolvaardt off Kathryn Bryce for an 11-ball 20.Davidson-Richards hit two of the final four balls of the innings for four to ensure Superchargers posted a defendable 133 off their 100 balls. However, this Headingley pitch seemed well suited to the slower bowlers, a fact borne out by the fact that Morris took one for 15, Ecclestone one for 17 and Wellington nought for 21. All three spinners bowled their full allocation of 20 balls.Bess Heath scored a 11-ball 20 to propel Superchargers towards the end•ECB/Getty Images

Forty minutes of rain reduced Originals’ target by 21 runs in 20 fewer balls but their innings got off to an atrocious start. Wolvaardt attempted a sharp single with Lamb but was run-out for five by bowler Grace Ballinger’s direct hit. Ami Campbell was then lbw to Lucy Higham for a two-ball nought to leave the visitors on 16 for two after 14 of their 80 balls.Lamb and Dottin took their time in rebuilding their side’s innings but the pace was increased when Dottin heaved Smith over the square leg boundary for six and punched Georgia Wareham through the covers, over mid-off and through midwicket for three fours in one set. That left Originals needing 63 off 40 balls and their hopes were dented when the dangerous Dottin was brilliantly caught at deep midwicket boundary for 27, Wareham completing a superb running catch inches inside the rope off Davidson-Richards.George managed only a single before falling to Smith, leaving Lamb and Ecclestone, two of the Orginals’ senior players, to score 56 off 32 balls. The pair rose to the challenge magnificently, Lamb returning to form with an array of attacking strokes and Ecclestone lofting Smith for a straight six in her nine-ball 13 before giving a return catch to the ex-Originals seamer, Kate Cross. That left Originals needing 13 off eight balls and 10 off the last set of five, bowled by Davidson-Richards, Crucially, however, Lamb was caught behind off the first of these deliveries and Davidson-Richards took the final wicket to finish with three for 23

Pathirana joins Bravo at TKR; Barbados Royals pick Athanaze, Theekshana

Sri Lanka slinger Matheesha Pathirana and South Africa batter Rilee Rossouw are set to make their CPL debuts after having been picked by Trinbago Knight Riders at the draft. Pathirana, 20, will reunite with Dwayne Bravo, having worked closely with him during his IPL-winning stint with Chennai Super Kings earlier this year.Bravo, who was Super Kings’ bowling coach at the IPL, will return as a player for the upcoming MLC competition and the CPL that follows. Knight Riders also signed Afghanistan left-arm wristspinner Noor Ahmad, who was a vital part of the Gujarat Titans side that reached the IPL 2023 final. Noor, 18, will add more mystery and guile to a spin attack that already includes Sunil Narine, Akeal Hosein and Mark Deyal, who can also turn the ball both ways.Shreyanka Patil, who was among the breakout stars of the inaugural WPL, where she played for Royal Challengers Bangalore, is now set to become the first Indian to feature in the WCPL after earning a deal with Guyana Amazon Warriors.Related

Sri Lankans in demand

Pathirana’s Sri Lanka and Chennai Super Kings team-mate Maheesh Theekshana has joined Barbados Royals. Theekshana was selected by TKR in CPL 2022, but he didn’t secure an NoC to play at the time.St Lucia Kings, meanwhile, picked both Dasun Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa at the draft.
