Nottinghamshire 120 for 3 (James 43, Haynes, 43, Aitchison 1-10) beat Derbyshire 162 for 9 (Donald 50, Patterson-White 3-20) by seven wickets (DLS method)A powercut could not deny Notts Outlaws victory over local rivals Derbyshire Falcons in an extraordinary Vitality Blast North Group match at the Central Co-op County Ground. The Outlaws were 108 for 3, chasing the Falcons 162 for 9, when the floodlights went out midway through the 13th over. When power was restored, the visitors were set a revised target of 120 and they easily sealed victory by seven wickets under the DLS method. Before the late drama, Aneurin Donald hammered 50 off 22 balls and Wayne Madsen passed 5,000 T20 runs in the Falcons total with Liam Patterson-White taking 3 for 20 and Dillon Pennington 3 for 40.Lyndon James and Jack Haynes both scored 43 and after the lights came back on, Tom Moores and Freddie McCann saw the Outlaws home to consign the Falcons to a third defeatThe Falcons lost two wickets in the first three overs of the powerplay before Donald found his range in spectacular style. He pulled Pennington for two consecutive sixes, the second smashing into the scoreboard, before swatting another maximum over cover to end an over which cost 22.Daniel Sams was dispatched high over the mid-wicket ropes and Conor McKerr was slashed over cover for a fifth six as Donald roared to a 21 ball 50 which also included three fours. His pyrotechnics took the Falcons to 65 for 2 at the end of the powerplay but he drove the next ball to long off and that sparked a mini collapse.Samit Patel pulled McKerr to deep mid-wicket before Martin Andersson was bowled coming down the pitch to Liam Patterson-White to reduce the hosts to 77 for 5. Ross Whiteley responded by sweeping Calvin Harrison and pulling Patterson-White for two sixes but then picked out deep mid-wicket.Wayne Madsen and Brooke Guest added 41 from 30 balls but three wickets fell off the last three deliveries, one to a run out, to leave the Outlaws chasing 163. Patel was unable to take the field because of a calf injury which left the Falcons a bowler down but they started well with Ben Aitchison having Joe Clarke caught at slip in the first over.James and Haynes regrouped and both cleared the ropes as the Outlaws moved to 48 for 1 at the end of the powerplay. The pair took 15 from a Whiteley over and put on 81 from 54 balls before Haynes pulled Pat Brown to deep mid on in the 10th over.James dispatched Andersson for six but next ball fell in identical fashion to Haynes before the ground was plunged into darkness. The power came back on in time for the game to resume at 10.10pm with a revised target leaving the Outlaws to score 12 from 15 balls.Tom Moores and Freddie McCann ensured there were no more twists before Pat Brown bowled a wide to put the lights out on the Falcons fading hopes.

Man City player ratings vs Swansea City: Rayan Cherki shines and Omar Marmoush secures come-from-behind win in Carabao Cup for Erling Haaland-less Cityzens

Rayan Cherki showed his class to inspire Manchester City to a come-from-behind 3-1 win at Swansea as Pep Guardiola's side booked their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. The French playmaker was City's top performer in an underwhelming display overall against the Championship side, who took the lead through a spectacular goal from Goncalo Franco.

Cherki hit the post as City finally woke up and Jeremy Doku found an equaliser before the break with the help of a huge deflection off Swansea's Cameron Burgess. Guardiola was ruthless with his substitutions, pulling off the ragged defensive duo Rayan Ait-Nouri and Abdukodir Khusanov plus the inexperienced Divine Mukasa as Phil Foden, John Stones and Josko Gvardiol came on, and City's class subsequently shone through.

Omar Marmoush thumped home after a clever pass from Cherki to give City the lead in the 77th minute, and the former Lyon maverick made sure of victory by scoring in added time, although there was some concern as he appeared to hurt a muscle in the process.

James Trafford (6/10):

Made a crucial finger-tip save to stop Widell from doubling Swansea's lead. Nothing he could do about Franco's worldie and he barely had to make a save in the second half.

Rico Lewis (6/10):

A lively display shuttling between defence and attack.

Abdukodir Khusanov (4/10):

An erratic performance. Set the tone with a reckless early challenge which he should have been booked for. Was then lucky his loose pass that was scooped up by Widell was not punished.

Nathan Ake (5/10):

Didn't show much authority as captain as no one bothered to pick up Franco when Key advanced.

Rayan Ait-Nouri (4/10):

Played his first game after missing two months with injury and it was a difficult return. Key twisted his way past him before setting up Franco's goal and then he got a booking for taking out Widell.

Oscar Bobb (5/10)

Struggled to find much space down the flank as Tymon and Samuels-Smith doubled up on him effectively.

Nico Gonzalez (7/10):

A strong, commanding display through the middle and one of the few players who stood tall throughout.

Divine Mukasa (5/10):

Found it much tougher than in his impressive debut against Huddersfield and was hooked on 62 minutes for Foden.

Rayan Cherki (9/10):

The standout performer, always looking to make something happen with his trickery and guile. Hit the post after some quick footwork in the box then played a smart pass to set up Marmoush. Crowned an excellent finish with a well deserved goal.

Omar Marmoush (6/10):

Had a quiet first half but grew into the game and proved his worth with his clinical winner.

Jeremy Doku (7/10):

His pace and nifty footwork got City back into the game, even if he benefitted from a big deflection off Burgess. Kept probing in the second half.

Gave City much more presence going forward and in defence, displaying the power and authority Ait-Nouri lacked. Provided the pass for Cherki's goal.

A luxury asset to bring off the bench and he gave City a bit more sparkle.

John Stones (6/10):

Brought some much-needed experience and calmness to the defence when replacing Khusanov.

Rayan Vitor: Why Brazil's latest teenage sensation is registering on the transfer radars of Barcelona, Arsenal and Liverpool

Vasco da Gama sensation Rayan Vitor is already into the third season of his senior career, despite only turning 19 on August 3, which is not a normal occurrence in the Brazilian Serie A, or indeed any other top league in the world. Rayan's star has also risen rapidly despite Vasco facing one of the most turbulent periods in their history, with financial uncertainty undermining the team's efforts since key figures from U.S. investment firm 777 Partners were removed from the board in May 2024.

The only thing keeping Vasco above water is the continued strength of their Base Forte academy, which produced Brazil icon Romario, Philippe Coutinho, Douglas Luiz, and more recently, Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos. Rayan could be next in line, having been one of the club's standout players throughout a testing 2025 campaign.

Barcelona scouts have reportedly been tracking the teenage forward's progress for the last 18 months, while Arsenal and Liverpool are also said to be weighing up a potential move for him in 2026, which is when his current contract is due to expire. Rayan has impressed so much for Vasco that a heavyweight bidding war could be on the cards in January, with his market value increasing with each passing game.

The question is: just how high is the Vasco starlet's ceiling? GOAL takes a deep dive into Rayan's extraordinary potential…

Where it all began

Rayan was born in Rio de Janeiro in 2006, and showed an interest in football from the moment he was able to walk, guided by his father Valkmar, who also came through the academy ranks at Vasco and played as a professional footballer between 1995 and 2000. Valkmar took up a role with the club's youth department for a time after retiring, and made use of his contacts when arranging his son's start in the game.

As per , Vasco welcomed Rayan into their futsal ranks when he was just six years old, and over the next five years, he developed a reputation as a deadly marksman, racking up a staggering 292 goals. He then made the transition to proper pitches, and continued to wow his coaches, most notably playing a key role in Vasco Under-13s' run to glory at the ICC Futures Championship, with Juventus, Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain all conquered en route to the trophy.

By the time he reached the age of 15, Rayan was already way ahead in his development. The talented teenager scored 29 goals in 34 appearances for the U17s in 2022, and made his U20s debut at the Sao Paulo Youth Cup, marking the occasion with another goal.

Vasco knew they had another diamond on their hands, and rewarded Rayan with his first professional contract in December that year, tying him down until 2025 while also inserting a release clause of $80 million to ward off any potential suitors.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportThe big break

That set Rayan up perfectly for a sensational breakout year. On January 20, 2023, the Brazilian attacker became the youngest player to feature for Vasco's senior team in the 21st century when coming off the bench in a 1-1 draw against Audax in the Campeonato Carioca, at the age of 16 years and 170 days.

He would go on to make more history at club level, but first jetted off to the South American Championship in Ecuador with Brazil's U17 squad. The Selecao stormed to the title, winning eight of their games and drawing just one, and Rayan won a share of the Golden Boot with five goals, alongside team-mate Kaua Elias and Argentina's Claudio Echeverri (now on the books of Manchester City).

Rayan returned to Vasco full of confidence and broke another one of the club's 21st-century records after being handed his first start in a league clash with Internacional in June, this time for youngest goal-scorer. Vasco lost the game 2-1, but Rayan bagged most of the headlines with his close-range finish, which also made him the fourth-youngest scorer ever in the Brasilerao, behind current Real Madrid starlet Endrick and former Brazil national team duo Jo and Anderson, who enjoyed spells at Manchester City and Manchester United, respectively.

That was the only goal Rayan scored in the 2023 campaign from six Serie A appearances, but he featured in 24 games the following season as he became a regular off the bench. His standout moment came in a clash against Criciuma, in which he produced a fine first-time strike to put Vasco 2-1 up before the break, only for the home side to snatch a point right at the death.

Rayan also played a key role in Vasco's run to the semi-finals of the Copa do Brazil, before getting himself sent off in the first leg of their tie against Atletico Mineiro. Vasco eventually lost that game 2-1 and could only get a draw in the second leg, but no one pointed the finger at blame at Rayan and it didn't detract from what was otherwise another impressive year for the youngster as he learned from the experience to reach a far higher level.

How it's going

Rayan was called up to Brazil's squad for the U20 Sudamericano in January, and helped his country win the title for the 13th time, scoring two goals, including a vital effort in their 1-1 draw with Argentina in the second phase of the competition. Vasco appointed a new manager while Rayan was away in the form of Fabio Carille, who decided the youngster was ready for a more prominent role.

Carille's faith was rewarded as Rayan netted two goals in two games in the opening rounds of the Copa do Brasil, and he also featured in five of Vasco's first six Serie A matches. Unfortunately, the club only picked up seven points from a possible 18 and Carille was ruthlessly dismissed. Vasco moved swiftly to bring in ex-Brazil boss Fernando Diniz as Carille's successor, and he also took an immediate shine to Rayan.

The teenager has gradually become one of the leading men in Vasco's starting XI under the guidance of Diniz, taking his goal tally to 15 from 45 appearances in all competitions while forming a strong relationship with veteran playmaker Coutinho, who re-joined his boyhood club last summer. One of those came via the penalty spot in a historic 6-0 thumping of Neymar's Santos, while he netted a brilliant double in Vasco's thrilling 4-3 home win over EC Vitoria, which lifted Diniz's side to 11th in the table and eight points clear of the drop zone.

Barring a major collapse, Vasco's top-flight status will be preserved for another year, and Rayan is already being painted as a hero by supporters, but refreshingly, he prefers to give the credit to Diniz. When quizzed on a potential senior Brazil call-up last month, Rayan told reporters: "God willing, I'll be there one day. Since Diniz arrived, I've always said he's been a great father figure, he's been a great help, he talks to me every day."

Getty Images SportBiggest strengths

Diniz hasn't been shy about heaping praise on Rayan in public either. "He's an extremely unique player, one of the few complete forwards in Brazilian football," the Vasco boss recently declared. "He's tall, fast, left-footed, has a good shot, and can now enter the box and score with his head. He recovers well and closes down well. He can play as a winger, a false nine, a No.9, or on the other wing."

In other words, Rayan is a versatile forward capable of hurting teams in a variety of different ways. He attacks the ball without fear and times his runs in behind to perfection, with Vasco able to readily exploit his electrifying pace on the counter.

Rayan boasts an incredibly strong frame for such a young player that allows him to shake off defenders with ease, and he is a surprisingly nimble dribbler who can excel in even the tightest areas of the pitch. As Diniz touched on, he's also a constant aerial threat, which is no doubt one of the reasons he's attracting so much interest from the Premier League amid a boom in set-piece-driven game plans.

Club plan January move for Newcastle ace who Howe is "really pleased" with

Newcastle United are reportedly at risk of losing a player who Eddie Howe is “really pleased” with when the January transfer window arrives.

David Hopkinson excited about Newcastle role

The Magpies have made a significant appointment high up at the club, with David Hopkinson confirmed as the new CEO at St James’ Park.

Speaking about his important role, the boyhood Newcastle supporter admitted he couldn’t wait to get started, praising the magnitude of the club in the process.

“This is a magical place. We’re at St. James’ Park, we’re on the pitch where legends have played. We’ve got the stands here that have been filled with fans who are mad about this team, so there’s such an incredible starting place.

“We’re starting from such a high place – but we’ve also got this moment of potential transformation as we get ready to play on the biggest stages imaginable, higher ambitions than maybe we have had at different points in the club’s history.”Being part of this moment is where I think there’s opportunity for even more magic.”

Away from Hopkinson’s appointment, Newcastle-related transfer rumours continue to emerge.

This is even after the summer window deadline last Monday, with an exit claim now coming to light regarding one of Howe’s brightest young talents.

Newcastle ace wanted by European club in January

According to a new update from Bild [via Sport Witness], Eintracht Frankfurt could revisit their interest in Newcastle attacker Will Osula in January.

A move for the 22-year-old failed to materialise in the summer, but doesn’t appear to be deterring the Bundesliga outfit, who had wanted a £4.3m loan fee with a £17.3m obligation to buy him permanently.

William Osula scores for Newcastle

Losing Osula in January would be a shame, considering the Dane is a talented young player who Howe spoke positively about after his goalscoring cameo in the unfortunate 3-2 defeat at home to Liverpool last month.

“Really pleased. It’s a great finish. I thought he did well when he came on – he looked lively, strong and quick. It could have been a big moment for us – a point here would have been incredible from the players – but he can be very pleased with himself.”

That said, Newcastle have now brought in both Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, which could limit Osula’s minutes going forward.

National media slam "weak" Newcastle star for "half-hearted" performance

It’s fair to say he’s had better nights…

ByTom Cunningham Sep 5, 2025

Granted, the Magpies are playing in four different competitions this season, so opportunities could still come his way, but if he sees his chances of featuring more regularly at Frankfurt, he may have a big decision to make when January arrives.

Bigger talent than Baleba: INEOS chasing "phenomenal" £100m CM for Man Utd

No one could’ve predicted the mammoth amount of money Manchester United could’ve splashed throughout this summer, with the hierarchy backing Ruben Amorim in his quest for success at the club.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe previously threw shade at the previous regime for their careless spending, which resulted in their recent cost-cutting operation at Old Trafford.

However, he’s overseen a transfer window which has already seen over £200m spent on new signings, with all three being made within the attacking department.

Other areas of the pitch are in desperate need of investment before the end of the window, that’s if the side are to rise up the Premier League table in 2025/26.

The hierarchy have already identified numerous targets for the middle of the park, with work being made to land reinforcements for Amorim’s first full season at the helm.

Carlos Baleba has been the player most frequently mentioned with a move to join United this summer, with the Cameroonian potentially being the next big-money addition to the side.

The 21-year-old would be an immediate and long-term addition to the side, but it would be an expensive purchase given Brighton and Hove Albion’s current £100m asking price.

However, he’s not the only young Premier League talent in their sights this summer, with Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton a potential target, according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims that the Red Devils are closely monitoring the Englishman should they fail to land a deal for Baleba between now and the September 1st deadline.

It also states that he’s hugely admired behind the scenes at Old Trafford, but, like the Brighton star, it would be a hefty investment, with Oliver Glasner’s side demanding in the region of £100m to sell the 21-year-old.

Why United’s latest target is a bigger talent than Baleba

United’s need for added reinforcements in the middle of the park has been evident in recent months, with such an area next on the recruitment hit list.

Whilst captain Bruno Fernandes is set to operate in a deeper role, it’s unclear who will be the Portuguese international’s partner at the heart of the side.

Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro all remain on the books at Old Trafford, but the aforementioned duo have struggled to adapt to Amorim’s system – whilst the latter is entering the final years of his career at 33.

The manager will undoubtedly want to make another addition in such a department to help the side return to their former glory during his tenure at the Theatre of Dreams.

Whilst Baleba has been the name most frequently mentioned in recent weeks, the club would be better off pursuing a move for Wharton before the end of the summer window.

When comparing their respective stats from the Premier League last season, the Eagles star managed to outperform him in numerous key areas – being the perfect deep-lying option Amorim has been hunting for.

Wharton, who’s been labelled “phenomenal” by HLTCO, completed more key passes and passes into the final third per 90 – having the tools to provide those new signings ahead of him to impress at Old Trafford.

He also made more carries into the final third, further highlighting the talent he possesses with the ball at his feet, offering a press-resistant option with his close control, which has been one of his most impressive attributes.

However, a ball-winner is something which the Red Devils desperately need, with the youngster able to provide just that if he can replicate his tally of interceptions made per 90 in the North West.

With both players potentially costing a club-record fee for United, it’s pivotal that the board make the right call on which signing they make, potentially losing a whole heap if they make the wrong decision.

As previously mentioned, it’s evident that Wharton would be the better signing, having the chance to develop into a world beater under Amorim and fire the club back closer towards their former glory.

He's more important than Baleba: £43m star now keen to join Man Utd

Manchester United could be about to make a key move in their quest for success this season.

Harry Kane labelled 'a really nice, likeable guy' but Vincent Kompany is 'the driving force' behind Bayern Munich's sensational start

Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has hailed manager Vincent Kompany as the "driving force" behind the club's sensational start to the season. While praising star striker Harry Kane's incredible form and humble attitude, Rummenigge credited Kompany with restoring unity at the Allianz Arena.

Who is Bayern's driving force?

Rummenigge has credited manager Kompany as the "driving force" behind the club's perfect start to the Bundesliga season. After winning the league title in their first season under the Belgian's leadership, Bayern have won their first five matches, scoring an incredible 22 goals while conceding just three to establish a dominant position atop the table. Speaking to the club legend lauded the impact the new coach has had in galvanising the squad at the Allianz Arena.

AdvertisementAFPKompany hailed as 'the driving force'

Rummenigge was effusive in his praise for the Belgian manager, who has guided Bayern to a formidable start in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League. He believes Kompany has successfully restored a crucial element to the team. "The coach, it must be said clearly, is the driving force behind it; he's doing a great job," Rummenigge stated. He added that Kompany has "re-formed the team into a unit."

Kane praised for on and off-pitch impact

While crediting the manager for the team's collective improvement, Rummenigge also singled out Kane for his immense contribution since arriving from Tottenham. The England captain has been in blistering form, scoring 15 goals in his first seven appearances in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League combined.

"He's not only a great player on the pitch, but he's also a very pleasant person in his private life," Rummenigge said. "He's not an arrogant guy who doesn't sign autographs or pose for selfies. He does everything. A really nice, likeable guy, too."

Getty Images SportWhat next for Kompany's Bayern?

With the team firing on all cylinders, the immediate challenge for Bayern is to maintain the high standards set in the opening weeks of the season. The restored unity under Kompany will be tested by a demanding schedule of domestic and European fixtures as they look to assert their dominance in the Bundesliga and progress through the Champions League group stage. Kane's goalscoring form will be vital to sustaining their challenge on all fronts.

After Hutchinson: Nottingham Forest close to signing dream Elanga replacement

While it might be something of a cliché, this season does feel like it’s going to be Nottingham Forest’s most important in a very long time.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side will need to prove that their form in the Premier League last year was no fluke, and on top of that, they’ll want to go as far as they possibly can in the Europa League.

Fortunately, there’s no reason to suspect that the Tricky Trees won’t be as good as they were last season, especially since the talismanic Morgan Gibbs-White is set to remain at the City Ground for the foreseeable future.

Moreover, while losing Anthony Elanga isn’t ideal, the club now look set to land someone who could be the perfect replacement.

Forest target perfect Elanga replacement

While the Gibbs-White saga has understandably dominated the headlines when it comes to Forest this summer, the club have made several smart additions to Nuno’s team so far.

Transfer Focus

Jair Cunha, for example, looks like he could develop into a useful defender for the side, while Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus produced a combined tally of 25 goal involvements last season, which could make all the difference this year.

However, there are still just over two weeks until the window slams shut, and the Tricky Trees seem intent on making the most of that time, reportedly set to welcome Ipswich Town’s Omari Hutchinson to the club, alongside Arnaud Kalimuendo.

Nottingham Forest's AnthonyElangareacts

Yet, according to a recent report from mainland Europe, Forest are also closing in on signing Dilane Bakwa.

The Belgian journalist has revealed that, while the club have seen their €26m + €5m (£22m + £4m) rejected by Strasbourg, the two clubs are now much “closer to an agreement” than before, and the transfer is now “almost there.”

While Tavolieri does not mention what the final fee for the French winger is likely to be, a story from L’Équipe from earlier this month claimed that the French side value him at up to €35m, which is about £35m, and while that is a lot of money, Bakwa would be worth it.

Why Bakwa would be a perfect Elanga replacement

So, while there is no debating that Elanga was brilliant for Forest last season and one of their most important attackers, it certainly appears that not only would Bakwa be a great replacement, but potentially even an upgrade.

For example, when it comes to their pure output last season, which is fundamentally what matters most for any attacker, it’s the Frenchman who comes out on top.

In his 31 appearances for Strasbourg, the dangerous “diamond,” as dubbed by journalist Zach Lowy, scored six goals and provided nine assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.06 games.

In contrast, the Swedish international scored six goals and provided 12 assists, but did so in 43 appearances, which comes out to a far less impressive average of a goal involvement every 2.38 games.

However, it’s not just their output that paints the 22-year-old in a better light, as he comes out comfortably on top when we take a look under the hood at their underlying numbers.

In fact, it’s not even close, as the Créteil-born gem comes out ahead in almost every single relevant metric, including but not limited to non-penalty goals plus assists, progressive passes and carries, shot-creating actions, tackles, interceptions and more, all per 90.

In other words, the Ligue 1 ace looks to already be a relatively complete winger, who is as capable of creating chances as he is scoring them, and has no problem tracking back to do his defensive work either.

Ultimately, while he might cost them a little more than they were planning, Forest should be doing all they can to sign Bakwa as soon as possible, as not only does he look like the perfect replacement for Elanga, but he is also a potential upgrade.

8/10 Chelsea "machine" just proved he's better than Fernandez & Palmer

Chelsea would have been expecting a tricky contest against Arne Slot’s Liverpool, but would have remained hopeful of a positive result off the back of the Reds potentially dropping the ball after being crowned Premier League champions a week ago.

The Dutchman would make considerable alterations – seen in the likes of Jarell Quansah starting at the back ahead of Ibrahima Konate – yet the manner in which Enzo Maresca’s Blues brushed aside the Reds 3-1 was still impressive, considering that was only Liverpool’s third loss of the season to date.

Now, Chelsea are only four points off Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in second spot, away from their pursuit of a Champions League position.

To clinch a top-five place though, Maresca will know he needs Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez performing at the same unbelievable levels they managed against Liverpool for the rest of the campaign to come.

Fernandez & Palmer's importance to Chelsea

Before exploring Fernandez’s superb day at the office further, Palmer would end up clinching the three points right at the death for Chelsea, meaning he’s now in an illustrious list of past Blues goalscorers.

It was a top-drawer showing from the former Manchester City attacker throughout, with Palmer notching up four key passes as a constantly creative menace, on top of beating Alisson from the penalty spot with an ice-cold finish.

Whilst it’s expected that Palmer will be able to bury chances considering he’s up to 15 Premier League strikes now, Fernandez’s composure was a joy to behold too during the 3-1 win, with this perfect touch and finish after just three minutes setting the tone for Chelsea to collect all three points.

Much like his electric teammate, however, the South American is a team player for the Blues cause, with four duels won, displaying the ugly side of his game, away from nearly adding to this seven assists in the league when collecting two key passes.

Both players are stalwarts under Maresca and for good reason, but there’s another standout performer who is equally as paramount to Chelsea right now, away from this spectacular duo.

The Chelsea star who is as important as Fernandez & Palmer

The West Londoners really do seem to be entering their stride at the best possible time, considering the Blues have now won their last three Premier League clashes on the trot, even with Slot’s intimidating Liverpool in their way.

These victories are made to look even more impressive when you take into account Moises Caicedo – who usually lines up in the centre of the park – has had to be drafted into the right-back position as of late, but the £115m star’s versatile nature has just managed to shine through regardless.

The expensive 23-year-old is beginning to prove his worth as a full package, with Caicedo exiting the field of play after the 3-1 win with only two misplaced passes next to his name, leading to a 94% pass accuracy being calculated.

But, he also battled well – much like Palmer and Fernandez – when necessary, with a high seven duels won across the course of his stellar 90 minutes, away from winning the hosts that late decisive spot-kick when moved back into the midfield areas.

Handed out an 8/10 post-match rating by London Evening Standard journalist Malik Ouzia, it looks as if Maresca will continue to pick Caicedo alongside Palmer and Fernandez for the foreseeable, knowing full well this trio are ready for the potential Champions League challenge that awaits.

Before anything is set in stone, however, Chelsea will just need to keep picking up the wins, with a very tough fixture away at Newcastle United up next, one that will show off the character of Maresca’s camp.

Rangers: "Outstanding" 4-4-2 manager explodes into race to replace Ferguson

An “outstanding” manager has now exploded into contention to replace Barry Ferguson as Rangers manager this summer, according to a report.

Gers stepping up new manager pursuit

After crashing out of the Europa League in the quarter-final, the Gers are now set for a trophyless season, which suggests major changes could be needed this summer, and it is looking increasingly likely that interim manager Ferguson is replaced.

Several top managers have been identified as potential targets, including Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho, with the 62-year-old believed to be among the frontrunners, although he would only be willing to join if he receives the board’s backing in the transfer market.

Having been in charge during the Light Blues’ 2020-21 Scottish Premiership title triumph, links to former manager Steven Gerrard are to be expected, and the Liverpool legend is now believed to be in pole position to replace Ferguson this summer.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, the 49ers have now whittled down their shortlist to just two managers, with Gerrard being rivalled for the job by Marco Rose, who has now exploded into contention to become the new Rangers boss.

While Gerrard remains under serious consideration, there is now a feeling that the Gers could make a move for Rose, who is ready to return to work next season, having been dismissed from his role as RB Leipzig manager back in March.

The former RB Leipzig boss has shot up the list of targets, with incoming sporting director Kevin Thelwell expected to play a big role in appointing the new manager.

Ferguson is desperate to be appointed on a permanent basis, but it is now looking increasingly likely the 49ers will make an outside hire.

Rose could be "outstanding" appointment for Rangers

The German’s time at RB Leipzig may not have ended the way he would’ve wanted it to, but he enjoyed some success during his time with the Bundesliga side, winning the DfB Pokal in 2023 and the German Super Cup in the 2023-24 campaign.

Not only that, but the ex-Borussia Dortmund boss also received praise during his time at Signal Iduna Park, with Marco Reus describing the job he did during his first few months with the club as “outstanding”.

The 48-year-old, who favours a 4-4-2 formation, could be a forward-thinking appointment for Rangers, given that he likes to implement a high-pressing style of play, so it is exciting news that he is among the main candidates for the job.

There may be a desire to appoint Gerrard, given that he has already experienced success in Scotland, but Rose’s time with RB Leipzig has demonstrated he could be capable of closing the gap on Celtic and winning the title next season.
