Aston Villa: Fans react to Matty Cash development

Reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano shared an update on Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash and his possible nationality switch to represent Poland.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa fans were quick to give their thoughts to the news on social media.

Cash, who is yet to represent England at any level, qualifies for Poland through family on his mother’s side.

The 24-year-old netted his first Villa goal on the weekend, and Cash’s father, Stuart, told UEFA reporter Piotr Kozminski that the process to receive a Polish passport began months ago and ‘should be completed soon’.

Cash is open to featuring for Poland, should they be interested in his services, and it seems as if the relevant paperwork to make him eligible will be finalised.

Villa fans react

Romano posted the comments on Twitter in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Curtis Jones links

Aston Villa could launch a £15m bid for Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones in the final days of the window, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa supporters have been reacting to the links on social media.

Nixon shared a story late on Saturday evening, claiming Villa are set to try their luck regarding the 20-year-old with an enquiry.

Jones can play as a central, attacking or left midfielder and still has four years left on his Anfield deal. He’s made 47 senior appearances for the Reds and has been involved in 13 goals, scoring seven and providing six assists.

The Englishman is yet to feature this season, though, and it appears as if Villa could launch a late swoop for the Liverpool man.

Newcastle: Douglas outlines Munoz transfer details

Mark Douglas has revealed some details regarding Newcastle United’s signing of Santiago Munoz.

The Lowdown: Munoz signs

On transfer deadline day, the St James’ Park club confirmed on their official website that Munoz has joined their Academy on a loan deal for 18 months.

There is also an option to make the deal permanent should he impress in the northeast.

The Latest: Douglas on Munoz

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Douglas has now confirmed that Munoz has indeed signed on an 18-month loan and will link up with the under-23s.

However, the journalist also revealed that the 19-year-old has signed a four-year deal with his parent club Santos Laguna, who would be ‘happy’ to take him back if Newcastle do not end up exercising their option to buy.

The Verdict: Under the radar

The signing of Munoz has gone somewhat under the radar given the focus on Steve Bruce’s team bringing in Joe Willock from Arsenal on a permanent deal. However, it is one which makes a lot of sense, as the teenager is certainly a player who can develop in the Academy.

The Mexican has already shown that he can score goals for both club and country, netting eight times in 16 games for the nation’s under-17s in addition to bagging three goals in 19 matches for Santos (Transfermarkt).

At just 19 years of age, the Magpies will be hoping that he can fulfil his potential with them, and hopefully his loan deal will ultimately be made permanent if all works out well.

Newcastle transfer update on Willock

Alan Nixon has claimed that Newcastle United can now sign Joe Willock before the summer transfer window ends.

The Lowdown: Saga goes on

There have been various reports throughout the window of the St. James’ Park faithful wanting to bring Willock back on a permanent deal, with one even claiming that they have already agreed a deal with Arsenal.

He is reportedly the priority target for the Tyneside club, but only time will tell if they end up getting their man.

The Latest: Promising 3-word update

As per football journalist Nixon, the potential permanent transfer of Willock to the North East has ‘got a chance’.

However, the Gunners will not drop their price much below £30m, and Nixon adds that it will come down to how Steve Bruce’s team make their payments.

The Verdict: Sign

If the Magpies can significantly negotiate down the original price of £30m, then signing Willock on a permanent deal is a no brainer.

The English midfielder scored no fewer than eight goals in total in 14 games in the Premier League in the 2020/21 season while on loan (Transfermarkt), and clearly elevated the side as they climbed away from the relegation zone.

Thus, the Toon should be looking to get this deal done as soon as possible ahead of the new campaign, which is not far away now.

Ashley Preece drops Villa update on Ward-Prowse

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has delivered a teasing transfer claim on Aston Villa’s pursuit of Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks and months had suggested that Dean Smith’s side had made Ward-Prowse a key target of theirs this summer as they look to strengthen their options in the middle of the park.

But, The Athletic’s David Ornstein then revealed that the Midlands club had had a bid rejected by the Saints, and that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s club had no intention of letting him go.

But now, Preece has delivered a 12-word update on where things currently stand from a Villa point of view.

He said: “All I’ll say is JWP could well happen. It’s not dead yet.”

Villa fans will be excited

Having already sealed deals for the likes of Emi Buendia, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings, among others, Villa have enjoyed a fruitful summer transfer window thus far, with the obvious caveat of losing Jack Grealish, of course.

But sealing a deal for Ward-Prowse, an England international and a captain of a Premier League rival, would be fantastic business for Villa, and it’s no surprise that it’s received a lot of backing from the likes of former Three Lions goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

He said: “He would be a great signing for Aston Villa though and in truth, Villa are moving forward faster than Southampton. They are a bigger club as well.

“If he moved I think it would enhance his international opportunities and for that reason I think it is a move the player will try and push through. Southampton will not want to do business but they are a club that will do business at the right price, of that I’m sure. I think Villa can get the deal through if they are willing to pay.”

And that claim from Robinson that Villa are “moving forward faster” than the Saints is the one that really stands out and tells a big picture about the kind of exciting project the Midlands club are building under NSWE’s ownership.

They have been quick out of the blocks with their summer recruitment, and while only time will tell how much of a loss Grealish leaving will be, have done virtually everything possible to try and still take that next step.

It’s exactly why Preece’s latest claim that a move for Ward-Prowse may not be dead should have Villa fans drooling at the prospect of another hugely exciting signing arriving at Villa Park this summer.

Meanwhile, Gregg Evans has dropped an Aston Villa transfer update…

Aston Villa: John Percy addresses Leon Bailey links

Reliable reporter John Percy has had his say on Aston Villa’s links to Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey.

The Lowdown: Bailey links

Villa’s interest in Bailey emerged on Wednesday, with reports suggesting the club were eyeing up a £30m swoop for the wide man.

The 23-year-old is viewed as an attainable target by Villa and are thought to be readying an approach to the Bundesliga side.

Bailey, who scored 15 goals and registered 11 assists last season, has just under two years left on his Leverkusen deal.

The Latest: Percy’s post

Percy, who writes for The Telegraph, responded to a Villa supporter on Wednesday evening suggesting Bailey fits the criteria for Villa in terms of position and price, however, he didn’t feel a move is imminent.

Another Villa fan then quoted his tweet, sharing his disappointment, with Percy replying to the supporter in question, saying:

“Never said he wasn’t on the list mate”

Percy, who has over 120,000 followers, can get hundreds of retweets and thousands of likes on his transfer posts, but as this was a reply to a fan, it seemed to go under the radar with just two retweets.

The Verdict: Sign

Bailey could well be on Villa’s shopping list, according to Percy, and a move for the Jamaican could turn out to be an excellent piece of business.

He’s capable of playing on either flank or as a centre-forward, with his main position coming on the right.

Should he move to the Midlands, Dean Smith may well then decide to use Jack Grealish in a central role, if he stays at Villa Park of course.

A front four of Bailey, Grealish, Emiliano Buendia and Ollie Watkins looks dangerous on paper, but a lot could happen between now and Villa’s opener against Watford on August 14.

Mikkel Damsgaard: Spurs’ next Eriksen?

Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer business appears to be far from over…

What’s the word?

The North London outfit have already completed moves for Pierluigi Gollini and Bryan Gil, and are on the verge of sealing Cristian Romero from Atalanta in a £47m deal.

And now their attentions could turn to the creative department, with Sampdoria gem Mikkel Damsgaard atop sporting director Fabio Paratici’s shortlist.

According to the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick, Spurs are eyeing a swoop for the 20-year-old Dane after he excelled at Euro 2020, though they are likely to face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Liverpool.

He has been valued up to €50m (£42.5m), which could force the Lilywhites into offloading a number of unwanted players before they can afford to buy him.

Eriksen 2.0

The desire to bolster Nuno Santo’s squad with a playmaker should come as little surprise as the North Londoners have lacked a player in the role since the departure of Christian Eriksen.

Neither Tanguy Ndombele (16 goal contributions) or Giovani Lo Celso (11 goal contributions) have stepped up to fill the void left behind by the Inter Milan star, who is not only a massive fan of Damsgaard but has played alongside him on the international stage.

Indeed, it was the Sampdoria maestro that stepped up to fill Eriksen’s absence at Euro 2020 and he took it in his stride by scoring two scorching goals – one a long-range curler against Russia and the other, a free-kick that very nearly dented the hope and dreams of England.

Damsgaard’s breakthrough this summer was merely one’s just desserts for his fine domestic form, which earned him a glowing endorsement from Leicester City’s former title-winning manager Claudio Ranieri, who dubbed him a “child prodigy.”

The young and versatile midfielder delivered two goals and four assists from only 18 starts, via WhoScored, whilst averaging 1.3 key passes and 4.3 dribbles per 90 minutes, which is much more indicative of his true ability.

By comparison, Ndombele (0.4) and Lo Celso (0.8) managed to create fewer key chances per match throughout 2020/21.

Damsgaard has been likened to Danish legend Brian Laudrup, who starred for Bayern Munich and Rangers, just as Eriksen once was.

Furthermore, there are plenty of similarities between the emerging talent and the former Spurs star.

I suppose it’s quite an obvious link to make but he is in the mould of Christian Eriksen in terms of what he has technically,” claimed Italian expert Conor Clancy to This is Futbol.

“I think Damsgaard is probably a little bit more mobile than Eriksen and he gets about a little bit more. He isn’t as static as a playmaker because he drifts, wanders out into the wide positions and is quick. He’s a very exciting player.”

TV2’s pundit Martin Mikkelsen has even described the 20-year-old sensation as “magical,” also adding: “He is dynamic and can go both ways. He is creative but also so mature in his decisions,” and that bolsters his claims of being a viable creative option for Nuno, should he be signed.

On the above evidence, Paratici could well seal Spurs their next Erisken by securing the £18m-rated starlet.

Liverpool fans love Matip goal in training

A number of Liverpool fans have been showing their love for Joel Matip, following a video of a brilliant solo effort from the centre-back in training.

The Reds are now back in pre-season, as they look to embark on what is hopefully a memorable 2021/22 campaign.

Jurgen Klopp and his players should be well-rested after being afforded a well-earned breather, barring those still away after international duties.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

Matip suffered a hugely frustrating season last time around, missing a huge chunk of proceedings as his injury woes continued.

The Cameroonian is back fit again and looking to be a key man moving forward, however, and he looks to have the bit between his teeth.

Footage has emerged [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter] of Matip scoring a great individual effort in training, finishing well after a strong run.

Pundit says £60m for James Maddison good deal for Leicester

Steve Howey reckons that Leicester should cash-in on James Maddison this summer.

According to Football.London, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admires the attacking midfielder, with the Gunners making him their top summer target following Martin Odegaard’s return to Real Madrid.

Maddison has been a key player for Leicester since joining from Norwich three years ago, but lost his place in the team towards the end of the campaign and found himself on the bench for both the FA Cup semis and final.

He featured in both but failed to build on an impressive January and February period.

Maddison didn’t contribute a single goal in any of his final 10 matches in all competitions and was overlooked by Gareth Southgate, leaving him on just the one England cap which came almost two years ago.

He did manage 11 goals and 10 assists last season, but with his inconsistencies on show once again, Howey thinks that the £60m fee that’s being reported by the Daily Mail would be good business for the Foxes.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“It’s a decent amount of money. It depends on what the manager wants, the owners trust him.

“If he feels it’s right for the club, then I think he would be quite happy with that. Does the player want to move or is he happy at Leicester? There are loads of things that could stop the deal, but on paper it looks a decent deal.”

Leeds target Madueke is an upgrade on Costa

Leeds United transfer target Noni Madueke would represent a massive upgrade on Helder Costa amid speculation over a summer move to Elland Road.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side have reignited their interest in the PSV Eindhoven winger after some third-party discussions, with the Whites given encouragement that the Dutch outfit will lower their asking price.

Football Insider’s report stated: “United are looking at the England Under-21 international as they look to recruit a wide attacker capable of competing for a first-team slot in Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Far better than Helder Costa

With nine goals and eight assists in all competitions last season, Madueke really took his game to another level with PSV in 2020/21, so much so that he earned a call-up to the England under-21 setup, where then-manager Aidy Boothroyd talked up his potential.

The 50-year-old said: “He’s certainly a very talented young man, really excited to be called up by the Under 21s, and a little bit like Phil (Foden) last time, nobody had really heard of him until he came and played in the tournament.

“They knew a little bit about him but that set him off on a trajectory and we’re hoping Noni can create even more positive attention for the way that they play.”

Roger Schmidt, his manager at club level, has been equally effusive in his praise of the 1.82m (6 foot) winger, saying: “He is able to read situations, get to the right positions and be in the right place. He has a good sense of that, with his timing, and, technically, he has the skills when one-on-one.”

Costa, on the other hand, showed virtually nothing last season to suggest he’ll be a key player for Bielsa going forward, managing just three goals all term.

Not only did Madueke triple that number of goals, doing the same in terms of assists, but his key attacking metrics were all far better than Costa’s as well.

As per Whoscored, the PSV starlet averaged more shots, key passes, dribbles and crosses per game, while also recording more passes per match at a far better pass accuracy than Costa.

While Madueke’s stats have to be tempered due to him playing in the Eredivisie, there’s no questioning that he’s someone who takes responsibility for his team and is always looking to try and make things happen, which is more than be said for Costa.

It’s no surprise that Leeds are eyeing a move for the young English starlet, who it seems would be a huge upgrade on Costa at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Leeds receive a major update on Marcelo Bielsa’s future…
