Crisis doesn't threaten board, says WICB chief

Julian Hunte, the WICB president, has unlike his England counterpart Giles Clarke, refused to admit any “error of judgement” in forming an association with Allen Stanford, who has been charged with “fraud of shocking magnitude” by the Securities and Exchange Commission in the USA. However, the WICB and ECB have issued a joint statement where they confirmed the suspension of negotiations with Stanford and his corporate group. “I don’t want to pass any judgement,” Hunte told the . “I don’t like to kick a man when he’s down. What we know is that as we speak, his license has been suspended.”As a result of the crisis, the Stanford 20/20 regional series, which was expected to go ahead despite the disbanding of the board of Legends, is now unlikely to be held. Asked about the future of the tournament Hunte said: “We anticipate that it will not continue (in the immediate future).”That is not a difficult matter for us to deal with. Either the West Indies Cricket Board on its own or with the assistance of other entrepreneurs, we’ll be able to get a tournament going in a way that will make it financially viable for us.”Hunte admitted the Stanford debacle was a setback for West Indies cricket but said it didn’t threaten its existence or functioning. “To all intents and purposes, the West Indies Cricket Board is not dependent on Stanford for its financial viability,” he said.”Stanford did, in the midst of all of this, make contributions to the territorial boards to assist them with the development of their cricket. And that has been very useful in terms of having an impact on how our cricket develops. In this regard you’re not going to get a Stanford coming around very soon, but we have to make the adjustment to proceed.”However Forbes Persaud, the chief executive of the Trinidad & Tobago board, said the cancellation of the Stanford 20/20 tournament could cost his board up to US$195,000. “Now that this has happened, it would mean that we cannot really look forward to that [money] coming to us again,” Persaud told the . “I know our boys were eagerly looking forward to playing in the tournament and the fact that they have frozen all his assets, it would mean that that would be the end of the tournament.”

West Brom handed double fitness boost

West Bromwich Albion have been handed a double fitness boost ahead of their upcoming Championship clash.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by Birmingham Live, Matt Clarke has taken part in full training with Valerien Ismael’s side this week, with the centre-back appearing well ahead of schedule in his recovery from a hamstring injury, while Kean Bryan is also in contention to make his Baggies debut against Queens Park Rangers on Friday.

The former Sheffield United defender, who was signed on a free transfer in order to provide cover for the injured Dara O’Shea, played 45 minutes for the West Brom U23 side against Aston Villa last Friday and looks to be getting close to full fitness.

Ismael will be buzzing

While it remains unclear whether Clarke will be deemed fit enough to play a role in Friday’s game, the defender’s rapid recovery from injury, coupled with the likely availability of Bryan for the QPR fixture, is sure to have left Ismael buzzing.

Indeed, Clarke had impressed over his three Championship appearances for the Baggies following his loan switch from Brighton & Hove Albion, making an average of 2.3 interceptions, one tackle, 2.7 clearances and winning 7.3 duels per game.

These returns had seen the centre-back average a SofaScore match rating of 7.03, ranking him as West Brom’s eighth-best performer in the second tier.

However, should Clarke not be fit enough to feature against Mark Warburton’s side, the left-footed Bryan could nevertheless allow Ismael to provide his back-three with a great deal more balance – something that, considering their recent run of poor form, it seems the Frenchman has desperately lacked.

As such, the news that both Bryan and Clarke appear to be nearing a return to first team action is undoubtedly a major boost for Albion, as the club will certainly be looking to get their promotion push back on track against an impressive looking QPR side on Friday.

Estamos bem concentrados – concluiu.

Workload doubts for key Australians

Ricky Ponting has raised questions over whether Australia’s main players will decide against going to the Indian Premier League

Ricky Ponting has raised questions over whether Australia’s main players will decide against going to the Indian Premier League and rest instead ahead of the four-month England tour. As more of the country’s major performers, including Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Shaun Tait and Stuart Clark, nominated for the Twenty20 auction on February 6, Ponting wondered how the two-week break between a one-day series against Pakistan and the start of the Twenty20 World Cup would be spent.”It’s a fair way away. We’re all going to have to make a judgment call closer to the time the IPL comes around,” Ponting said in the Australian.”We might only be able to play the last two weeks and a lot of the franchises we play for might have no chance of making the finals. There’s all those sorts of things that need to be taken into consideration and worked out between the player and the franchises.”Ponting, who is signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders, has not had a break since the Test tour of India, which began in September. The IPL is due to start in April and Australia’s Twenty20 players need to be in England at the end of May. By then many of them will have appeared in a one-day series against Pakistan, probably at a neutral venue. Those in all three formats will stay in England until the end of September before preparing for the Champions Trophy and the home summer. Player workload has become a key issue in the Australian Cricketers’ Association’s memorandum of understanding negotiations with Cricket Australia, with the players pushing for fewer promotional appearances as part of their contracts.

Foot injury to keep Lee out for a month

Brett Lee’s troublesome left foot has prevented him from trying to justify his importance to Australia’s team on the third day in Melbourne

Australia will almost certainly enter the series finale in Sydney next week with a vastly inexperienced attack after learning Brett Lee faces a month out of the game due to a foot injury. Lee has been out of form and was unable to improve his series figures of 1 for 200 when the problem kept him off the ground for the entire third day against South Africa at the MCG.Lee has what the team physio Alex Kountouris described as a stress reaction – “on the way to being a stress fracture” – in the fourth metatarsal in his left foot. While there is a chance Lee could bowl in the second innings, it could take as little as one ball to turn the small crack into a stress fracture and a four- to six-week layoff is probably required either way.”I don’t think he’ll be able to play the Sydney Test,” Kountouris said. “We’ll wait and reassess at the end of the game but if he’s got what we think he’s got and it’s been confirmed by scans that he’s got a stress fracture, it’ll probably mean we’re going to have to rest him for a period of time to let it settle. We’ll probably get a specialist opinion but it will be something between four and six weeks I think.”That would rule Lee out of Australia’s ODIs against South Africa and New Zealand and would mean a potential return in the Test series in South Africa that begins in late February.Kountouris said the injury was caused by overuse and was not uncommon in fast bowlers. Lee has also had problems with his left ankle and has had four operations on the joint, the most recent of which kept him out of last year’s World Cup.Lee’s lack of penetration has been a concern against South Africa and he leaked 68 runs from 13 overs as the pain increased throughout the second day at the MCG. Losing him for the Sydney Test would take the heat off the selectors to justify his inclusion but it would also leave Mitchell Johnson in charge of a young attack. Michael Clarke, the vice-captain, said a lack of Test experience in the bowling group would not be a major worry.”I think I look at it the other way,” Clarke said. “I remember when I got my opportunity to play Test cricket, it’s a great feeling and you really look forward to that day and I think whoever – if somebody does come in for Brett Lee – I know they’ll be looking forward to that opportunity and hopefully they can get hold of it with both hands.”Peter Siddle and Nathan Hauritz are each in their third Test and the candidates to replace Lee include the uncapped Ben Hilfenhaus, who joined the squad after the WACA loss. The Sydney local Doug Bollinger will also come into the equation, as will Shane Watson, who filled in as 12th man while Lee rested in Melbourne.

Moyes confirms West Ham boost vs Zagreb

West Ham United boss David Moyes has confirmed a huge boost ahead of tonight’s Europa League group stage opener…

What’s the latest?

The Irons are about to embark on a historic campaign as they will be making their debut at this stage of the competition and they will do so with a fully fit squad at the 58-year-old’s disposal.

Speaking ahead of kickoff, via the club’s official website, the Scot said:

“We’ve got no injuries; we have everybody fit and available.

“I’ll look at it because we have a busy programme, but overall everybody is fit and available and we’re really looking forward to it. We’re pleased to be on the road, and I think we’re all excited about being here.

“We’ve got a lot of people who we can make changes with, but we’re also trying to make sure that we choose and pick [teams] the right way if we can, and get the selection correct.”

Huge boost

Considering the injury troubles that Moyes and the squad had to deal with last season, this is massively encouraging news and could be crucial in the long run as the starting XI will need to be rotated regularly in the coming months.

The Hammers will be playing two games per week for the foreseeable future and it’s unreasonable to expect the same line-up to feature in every match.

For example, the east Londoners remain unbeaten in the Premier League and face table-topping Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, so Moyes will surely have one eye on that game, whilst also wanting to get off to the perfect start in Europe.

He must find the right balance and after some shrewd acquisitions during the summer transfer window, he does now appear to be well-equipped right across the pitch, barring up front where it still is only Michail Antonio.

The 31-year-old is likely to get a run-out this evening as he’ll be suspended for the visit of the Red Devils at the weekend, so that’s another boost in itself as Moyes will be able to call upon his in-form talisman.

“Mich might’ve been someone we’d have considered leaving out, but I think with the situation being the way it is at the moment, I don’t think we’ll do that,” the boss revealed.

The travelling West Ham faithful should be absolutely buzzing with this news as it means they’ll get to witness a full-strength side go to battle in a European group stage for the very first time in their history.

Towards the back end of last season, Moyes lost players like Antonio, Declan Rice and Aaron Cresswell to injury, so to have them all fit and available is certainly a huge boost to their chances of delivering the goods in Croatia.

Michael Beale era técnico do time sub-23 do Liverpool e conheceu Ceni durante estágio do ex-goleiro no clube inglês.
