Aaron seeks match fitness ahead of Ranji season

Varun Aaron, who has been sidelined with injury for the last 15 months, is eyeing a comeback into the national side

Injuries have kept Varun Aaron out of action for the last 15 months•AFP

India fast bowler Varun Aaron, whose career has been plagued with injuries, is working towards attaining match fitness in time for the Ranji Trophy with a “slight adjustment” to his bowling action. He hopes the tweak will help him last the entire domestic season.Aaron has been an almost permanent fixture at the National Cricket Academy ever since he was withdrawn from India’s squad for the Test series in Australia in 2011-12. Though he returned for a short stint during IPL 2012 where he featured in eight games for Delhi Daredevils, he suffered a recurrence of a back injury. As a result, the Jharkhand bowler, who keeps ferrying between Bangalore and Pune, where his family is now based, hasn’t played a competitive game for more than 15 months. Still, he had a wide smile on his face on Thursday.”The injury has started healing now. I have started bowling again,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “Obviously it would take me a little time to start bowling at full throttle, but I have been trying to build on pace slowly as I progress.”Aaron has had a frustrating last year. Owing to the injuries, Aaron hasn’t had a first-class outing since his Test debut in November 2011, and when the recurrence of his back injury was noticed in July 2012, he, along with the physios at the NCA, had expected the wound to heal in about four months. However, in November, it was found that the wound had been infected.”I consulted a surgeon in England who advised me that surgery was the best option and we went ahead with it in March. Since then, my back has held up pretty well. I would be naive to say that I am not frustrated. It’s been quite disappointing to have been out of action for so long but I am positive that the worst is behind me and once I get back on to the field, I am sure I would be able to enjoy my cricket even more.”Aaron has not thought about cutting down on pace, his key weapon, but he has made a slight modification to his bowling action for which he credits Bharat Arun, NCA’s outgoing head of bowling unit, and V Venkatram, who was relieved of his duties as bowling coach earlier in the year.”I would call it a minor adjustment. They suggested I should open up my landing foot while bowling, and it has really helped.”When Aaron rose through the ranks, he and Umesh Yadav were marked as the potential leaders of India’s pace attack. However, Aaron’s injury setbacks have meant he has lagged way behind in the race for sealing a bowling spot. In fact, he realises he has to start from scratch if he is to make a case for being selected again. But selection is the last thing on his mind for now.”All that I am thinking about is to be fully fit. The Ranji Trophy season starts in the last week of October and I am hoping to be fit in time for our (Jharkhand¹s) first match,” Aaron said. “The next objective would be to remain injury-free for the entire domestic season and then we will take it from there.”A fit Aaron will give more options to the selectors for India’s tough year ahead. With tours to South Africa, New Zealand and England lined up in the next seven months, the team’s pacers are likely to be stretched to their fullest. If Aaron can indeed last the full domestic season, one would not be surprised if he is part of the tours to either New Zealand or South Africa. As three of India’s pace bowlers - Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar – have been going through the paces in what is their routine fitness assessment at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, they would be heartened to see the manner in which Aaron is shaping up for having a crack towards regaining his spot in the national team.

Duminy set to make a Test comeback

JP Duminy is set to regain his Test place after 11 months as South Africa embark on a two-Test series against Pakistan

JP Duminy is set to regain his Test place after 11 months as South Africa embark on a two-Test series against Pakistan. Duminy spent six months recovering from a ruptured Achilles’ tendon and after a successful one-day return, has been given a vote of confidence from the national coach to make a Test comeback as well.”How we’ve worked is that when a player has a spot and he gets injured, once he is fit again, he will regain his spot. I think that’s only fair,” Russell Domingo, South Africa’s coach said ahead of the squad’s departure. “I very much see JP being in the starting XI.”Duminy had previously spent two years out of the Test team following a loss of form after creating a stir with a 50 and unbeaten 166 against Australia in his first two matches. He returned against New Zealand in March 2012 and scored a century and also played an important role in South Africa’s win against England at Lord’s last June which gave them the Test mace.He could play no part in their victory over Australia because of his injury. Faf du Plessis took his spot and impressed with a match-saving century in Adelaide. That would mean the likely loser from Duminy’s return would be Dean Elgar, who replaced Jacques Rudolph and, apart from a century against New Zealand, has not made the spot his own.Following an extensive rehabilitation period, Duminy returned to action during the Champions Trophy in June this year. He scored an unbeaten 150 before the tournament during a warm-up against the Netherlands, had a lean run through the competition but had one innings of 97 in the ODI series in Sri Lanka, which South Africa lost 4-1. He has also become a significant contributor with the ball, sending down 36.2 overs of offspin in the five matches.Duminy’s potential as an allrounder is what South Africa are hoping to use to their advantage in the UAE. “With JP back in the mix, whether we need to play a second spinner still needs to be debated,” Domingo said.Conditions are expected to be conducive to turn – given that was how Pakistan got the better of the last No.1 side to tour the UAE, England – and South Africa have included two specialist spinners in their squad. Robin Peterson is the incumbent but they have also brought back Pakistani-born legspinner Imran Tahir, who played 11 Tests but was dropped after conceding 260 runs without taking a wicket in Adelaide.Peterson has had some success, most notably with five wickets in a match against Pakistan in Cape Town, but Tahir’s attacking ability were thought to create a tough contest between the two for a spot. Domingo confirmed he would allow Peterson to start before turning to Tahir. “At the moment, I still feel Robbie is the guy. He has made some contributions,” he said. “You are always going to take two spinners to the subcontinent but Imran has to do something special to knock the door down.”The rest of the line-up will retain its familiar look with Graeme Smith fully recovered from ankle surgery to lead the team and open the batting. Domingo indicated he would continue with the seven batsmen and three seamers strategy that was used under Gary Kirsten. “I would be a fool to go in there and make drastic changes,” he said. “There might be one change in terms of personnel but the balance of the side will stay pretty much the same.”That one change would be Duminy’s return but Elgar need not despair yet. There is a chance he will feature in the series after all because South Africa may have to do without Hashim Amla for the second Test. The No.3 batsman and his wife, Sumayya, are expecting their second child to be born “some time after the first Test” according to team manager Mohammad Moosajee.Amla will leave Dubai as soon as the match is done and “depending on when the baby arrives”, a decision will be made on his availability for the second match. There is a four-day turnaround between games and if Amla does not make it back in time, Elgar, who has batted in the top-order for most of his career, could assume the spot.Everyone else in the South African squad is fit. Dale Steyn has recovered from the assortment of injuries that plagued him at the Champions Trophy. Rory Kleinveldt’s toe laceration has healed and Wayne Parnell’s heart issue has also been sorted out.

Do outro lado, o meia Paulo Henrique Ganso praticou “desrespeito à arbitragem”, pois empurrou o quarto árbitro antes do término da partida.

A pair of fifties from the two Daniels – Flynn and Harris – ensured Northern Districts had enough runs to keep Otago at bay, as they opened their HRV Cup campaign with a nine-run victory in Dunedin. Northern Districts batted first, with the openers Brad Wilson and Flynn putting on 49.After Wilson was removed for 27, Flynn was joined by Harris, and the pair had a 69-run partnership. Flynn finally fell for 57 off 48 balls, which included three sixes and fours. Scott Styris chipped in with 14, but the rest of the lower order failed to add anything significant. Harris finished on 68 when he was run out by Neil Broom off the penultimate ball of the innings. Northern Districts reached 183 for 6.Otago, playing their first HRV Cup match since winning the tournament last year, got off to a belter as Broom and Jesse Ryder put on 65. Both openers fell by the 10th over, as Otago looked to build a strong platform to mount a chase of a competitive score. Aaron Redmond, coming in at No. 3, played an integral innings of 50 not out off 31 balls, as he and Ryan ten Doeschate combined for 76 runs for the third wicket. When ten Doeschate departed with the score on 147 for 3, Otago still required 37 runs off the final nine balls. Some inspired hitting from Redmond was not enough to close the gap, and Otago fell short by just nine runs. The match between Canterbury and Otago in Dunedin on November 8 was abandoned without a ball bowled on account of heavy rain on the morning of the match.

Batsmen stand up as SA rise

AB de Villiers said South Africa’s batsmen had “a few hard one-on-ones” after failing to match the bowlers’ efforts at the start of the one-day series

Firdose Moonda16-Nov-20130:00

‘There’s still work to do’ – Russell Domingo

Legend has it that after Australia piled on 434 runs against South Africa at the Wanderers in March 2006, Jacques Kallis tried to lighten the mood with a joke at the dinner break. “Well,” he said, “now that the bowlers have done their job, I guess it’s up to the batsmen to do theirs.”There are contrasting reports about who laughed and who growled in response but it’s an observation that rung true for South Africa’s line-up on their trip to the UAE. After the first two ODIs, in which they bowled Pakistan out for 182 and 209, the bowlers, sans Dale Steyn, were doing their job just fine. The batsmen had been shot out for 183 and 143 and were not doing theirs. With Gary Kirsten as their consultant they had “a few hard one-on-ones”, as AB de Villiers put it, to lay bare what was going wrong and what they needed to do to fix it.”We realised we were in trouble as a batting unit. And a few heads were going to roll if we didn’t get it right,” de Villiers said at the team’s arrival in Johannesburg on Saturday. “We decided to put our hands up and get a couple of good innings as a batting group. It was about taking responsibility and changing our mental approach. We were not playing up to standard and we had to force ourselves to believe we were good enough.”Instead of focus on anything technical – South Africa were playing Pakistan’s spinners a lot better than they had Sri Lanka’s in August – they needed a change in the way they were thinking. As soon as the switch flipped, improvement were clear. In the next match, South Africa posted their first total over 250 since June’s Champions Trophy and they had two individual half-centuries, one from a struggling Faf du Plessis, who finally found form. Having gone 11 ODI innings without raising his bat, du Plessis was starting to feel the heat. “It was tough to go through all that. It was a different experience for me and one I took a bit personally,” he admitted. “But I learned a lot and I started feeling better with the batting. It was just time. I knew runs were around the corner.”In the game that followed, South Africa recorded their first century of the tour, when young Quinton de Kock made good on the promise he showed at domestic level. After looking particularly susceptible to turning tracks and slow bowling in Sri Lanka, de Kock had taken it on himself to train even harder with his franchise coach Geoff Toyana. His technique is tighter and his talent came through.South Africa’s bowlers set the standard for their batsmen to match in their tour of the UAE•AFP

He has now claimed a spot in South Africa’s limited-overs teams, which will give the selectors an interesting conundrum at the top of the order in ODIs, when Graeme Smith returns to fitness, and in T20s, with Henry Davids also pushing for a place.”Everybody knows Quinton is a seriously talented player,” Domingo said. “He obviously had issues in Sri Lanka against spinners, where he was getting his left leg too far across the crease. But he’s worked on that. I am very impressed with his work ethic. Some people may perceive him as wild young thing but he has got a good work ethic.”In the final game, de Villiers scored a hundred that can be used as a prototype for pacing an innings. His measured start gave him the perfect launchpad to accelerate later on. South Africa won all three of those matches and showed their 50-over cricket is back on track. “The Test side’s success at number one may have caused the one-day side to get less love and less attention. We are trying to rectify that,” Domingo said. “The whole group have all stepped up and put in big performances.”Because they did it throughout the series, the bowlers got very little mention but it was through them that South Africa took a lead in the Twenty20 rubber. After their destructive showing in the first match, in which they restricted Pakistan to 98 for 9, Mohammad Hafeez’s men struggled to come back, even two days later when they collapsed again. With a range of quicks to choose from, South Africa’s T20 plans for next year’s WorldT20 are going well. The only thing they may hope for is a more competitive showing from Pakistan in the immediate return series, which begins on Wednesday. Even if they don’t get it, Domingo said South Africa will concentrate on climbing the ladder and building their own self-belief.”Confidence is a massively important thing and so you can never take things for granted,” he said. “We know Pakistan will be hurting and we expect them to come fighting. We are still a work in progress.” That they have progressed so far will leave Kallis, who could return for the ODIs against Pakistan, pleased because the batsmen are doing their job too.
