Peaking at the right time?

New Zealand have been one of the usual suspects at the knockout stages of ICC events. Despite continued troubles in the Test form, that trend might just continue

The Champions Trophy has been good for New Zealand. In 2000, when it was still the ICC Knockout, with a view to the funds helping the developing cricket nations, Chris Cairns hit an unbeaten century in Nairobi to lead them to their only piece of global silverware. They have come close many times since – quarter and semi-finals are a regular place to find New Zealand in global events – and their surge of form ahead of the tournament has belied their No. 8 ranking. All of a sudden the problems in red-ball cricket have been shed. In a competition as short and sharp as the Champions Trophy, hitting form at the right time is key. New Zealand will just hope they haven’t peaked early.Their recent performances against England have reinforced the feeling that New Zealand’s slump in one-day cricket before this year had been more surprising than their struggles in Tests. For a format that has often been the lifeblood of New Zealand there have been precious few successes. Before the impressive 2-1 series win in South Africa earlier this year it had been a barren run in ODIs. Since losing the World Cup quarter-final against Sri Lanka in March 2011 they have won just four matches (until the tour of England) against sides excluding Bangladesh and Zimbabwe and even before that their form was far from flash with a run of 11 defeats in a row including a series loss to Bangladesh. There are signs that under Brendon McCullum and Mike Hesson, New Zealand have gone back a few generations with the structure of their one-day team. Experienced players, whose careers may have been finished, notably Grant Elliott and James Franklin, have been given another chance while they are trying to nurse Daniel Vettori back although that is proving problematic. With a strong seam attack and a middle-order featuring McCullum, Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson, plus the career-high form of Martin Guptill, they have the basis for a competitive team. And, really, it would not be a global event without New Zealand in the semi-finals.Key playerThere were signs during the Test series against England that Ross Taylor was regaining somewhere near his best form with an aggressive half-century at Lord’s and a rearguard effort at Headingley and he grew increasingly fluent in the ODIs which followed. Despite an improvement in the weather, and some flatter pitches, the Champions Trophy is unlikely to be a walk in the park for top-orders so Taylor’s role will be two-fold: lay a base for the likes of McCullum below him but also be there himself to take advantage of the last 10 overs.Surprise packageNew Zealand are not short of left-arm pace bowlers. Mitchell McClenaghan has so far been used exclusively in the one-day formats – and with some success. He impressed in South Africa and it was a significant blow when he was injured during England’s visit in March. On his return he has been used in a very attacking manner by Brendon McCullum, recalled to target key players in the opposition middle order. He doesn’t take a backward step and doesn’t mind a few words, either.WeaknessNew Zealand will cross their fingers that the Champions Trophy marks the arrival of the British summer. When the ball doesn’t move their top order is far more comfortable. Swinging conditions could still be their undoing. Although batsmen can get away with a few more edges in one-day cricket and bowlers’ spells are rationed, losing early wickets on a regular basis would leave the middle-order a lot of rebuilding to do.Champions Trophy historyWinners in 2000, New Zealand reached the final last time this tournament was staged during 2009 in South Africa where they lost by six wickets to Australia. Six of the team from that match are in this year’s squad. In 2006-07 they also came unstuck against their neighbours, this time in the semi-final, but the last time the competition was in England in 2004 they didn’t make the last four – again due to defeat against Australia.Recent formSigns of improvement. The series win in South Africa was an outstanding effort, especially after the humbling in the Tests, but conceding the series against England at home, despite having won the opening game, was a missed opportunity for them. Their response in the recent NatWest Series, though, was emphatic and bodes well for the weeks ahead.

Tampering allegations 'unacceptable' – Bopara

Ravi Bopara has described Bob Willis’s accusation of ball-tampering by England during the Champions Trophy as “annoying, sad and depressing”

Ravi Bopara has described Bob Willis’ accusations of ball-tampering by England during the Champions Trophy as “annoying, sad and depressing”.Willis, the former England captain, claimed England had been scratching the ball to promote reverse-swing during their defeat to Sri Lanka at The Oval. The England coach, Ashley Giles, issued a firm denial at the time and now Bopara has also rubbished the allegation.”We were doing well in that tournament and I felt it was unacceptable to make that sort of noise,” Bopara told the “It was annoying, sad and depressing, especially in the middle of a global competition.”When England are doing well, why does something negative have to come from it? Why not just get on the wave with England and enjoy it?”Willis, as a pundit on Sky Sports, claimed that an unnamed England player was scratching the ball after it was changed during the group match defeat to Sri Lanka at The Oval – officially because it had gone out of shape. Willis said umpire Aleem Dar was “on England’s case” after Dar and his colleague Billy Bowden had initiated a ball change that England appeared unhappy with.Bopara was often responsible for looking after the condition of the ball, so an allegation of tampering could be regarded as a personal slight. But the ICC saw no reason in the umpire’s report of the match for any investigation.England found great success with reverse swing during their victory over Australia at Edgbaston – which George Bailey said he had been “very surprised” at – but struggled without any reverse movement against Sri Lanka. It was conventional swing that aided them in victories over New Zealand at Cardiff and in the semi-final against South Africa.”We’ve learned over the last 12-18 months that we need to look after the white ball as well as we do the red ball,” Bopara said. “We discussed as a team how we were going to shine it. You have to look after them to make them ‘talk’.”You want that seam to be standing up as long as possible; you want one side to be very smooth, which helps with lateral movement. If you can make the red ball swing, you should be able to do the same with the white one.”

Veja as opções abaixo:

Kaique Rocha

Elgar's ton boosts his Test hopes

Dean Elgar made a strong bid to remain in South Africa’s Test team ahead of the fit-again JP Dumimy with an unbeaten 135

Dean Elgar made a strong bid to remain in South Africa’s Test team ahead of the fit-again JP Dumimy with an accomplished, unbeaten 135 against a strong Australia A attack in Pretoria. Like David Warner on the opening day, the innings may have wider implications for Elgar albeit scored on a flat, lifeless winter track.South Africa A coach Vincent Barnes admitted he would have liked a surface with a bit more bounce but the conditions at this time of year made that impossible. The High Performance Centre had done a sterling job in ensuring a lush, green outfield despite the dead grass at stadiums like the Wanderers and Centurion at the moment.Having amassed a run short of 400 on the first day, at a rate of almost 4.50 per over, Australia A chose to continue on the second morning. Warner was out in the last over the previous evening but Glenn Maxwell continued to build on his century. South Africa A’s attack could not dismiss either him or Tim Paine and Australia declared after facing 17 overs and adding 75 runs.South Africa A batted at a slower rate but enjoyed a healthy opening stand. Free State team-mates Reeza Hendricks and Elgar put on 97, with Elgar appearing in good nick despite the off-season break. Josh Hazlewood bowled with good pace and eventually made the first breakthrough, dismissing Hendricks lbw.Stiaan van Zyl did not show the class his reputation has been built on and was troubled by Fawad Ahmed, who once again made a push for an Ashes call-up. Ahmed had van Zyl caught at short leg for 8 and then took a superb catch off his own bowling – diving across the pitch – to dismiss Rilee Rossouw for a duck off the next ball. His hat-trick delivery could have seen Justin Ontong caught at silly point but the leading edge looped high and the fielder could not get to it in time.Instead, Ontong survived to score a calm 60 and share in a 118-run stand with Elgar who brought up his century, off 151, balls with a single off Ahmed, after hitting him for two fours in the same over. Elgar showed good prowess against both seam and spin which will be encouraging for the national selectors ahead of South Africa’s next Test series against Pakistan in the UAE.Ontong was bowled by Moises Henriques as the shadows lengthened across the field but Elgar batted to the close. South Africa are still well behind, but with not much on offer for the bowlers the first unofficial Test looks to be heading for a draw.

Guyana can win the title – Guptill

Martin Guptill, the New Zealand batsman, believes his franchise Guyana Amazon Warriors can win the inaugural Caribbean Premier League

Martin Guptill, the New Zealand batsman, believes his franchise Guyana Amazon Warriors can win the inaugural Caribbean Premier League. Guptill has been one of the linchpins of the Guyana batting but a broken bone in his right hand ended his stint even as his franchise prepares to take on Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel in Thursday’s semi-final.”I definitely think we can (win the title),” Guptill said. “We showed we can with our chase of a decent total against Antigua (last Saturday). We got to the last ball and we came through. The spirit is good in the camp and hopefully we can take that forward to the semi-final and hopefully the final.”Guptill and his national team-mate James Franklin have impressed for Guyana and former New Zealand captain Ross Taylor has also done decently for Trinidad & Tobago. Guptill hoped these performances would further raise the profile of New Zealand’s cricketers, although he believed they needed to play more Test cricket.”James Franklin and I have had reasonably successful tournaments. It puts us out there and hopefully people will take notice. From what I read, Sir Richard’s (Hadlee) comments were more to do with (New Zealand’s limited amount of) Test cricket than anything else and we are struggling a little in the Test game at the moment. The only way we can get better is by playing more Tests and if that can come in the next few years and we can keep developing as a team then who knows where we can go from there.”Guptill joked he was filling a dual role in the Guyana side – opening the batting and also acting as a spy in the camp, trying to pick up some inside information on West Indies players ahead of the Caribbean side’s tour of New Zealand in December. That information has included an attempt to decipher the skills of Sunil Narine, although, as Guptill admitted, trying to read the spinner has been anything but easy.”I have only faced him once in the nets and he was only bowling offspin then so I do not know what is going to happen when he comes to New Zealand at the end of the year. I have been trying to see when he bowls how he does what he does but it is pretty hard to pick it up.”
