O provável Palmeiras tem Jailson, Marcos Rocha, Antônio Carlos, Thiago Martins e Michel Bastos (Victor Luis); Felipe Melo (Thiago Santos), Tchê Tchê e Lucas Lima; Willian, Dudu e Borja.

Com 19 pontos em sete rodadas, o Palmeiras lidera a classificação geral do Paulistão.

IOC squeak into semi-finals despite defeat

A round-up of matches from the third day of the BCCI Corporate Trophy

M Vijay’s aggressive century set up Chemplast’s win•AFP

Group A
India Cements marched into the semi-finals with their second successive bonus-point win, trouncing All India Electricity Board by seven wickets with 22 overs to spare in Vishakapatnam. AIEB were tormented by pace and spin alike after being invited to bat, and eventually stuttered to an inadequate 128 in 41.2 overs. Manoj Tiwary was the only batsman to come to terms with the situation, scoring 43, but there was no support forthcoming from his colleagues. R Ashwin and Shadab Jakati spun their way to combined figures of 6 for 47 in 18.2 overs, while seamer M Raja chipped in with 2 for 29.India Cements’ reply ran into rough weather early with Tiwary scalping three big wickets under the lights to reduce them to 25 for 3 in the 11th over. However, their hopes of an unlikely win were scuppered by contrasting fifties from Abhinav Mukund and Dinesh Karthik. The pair added 109 in 17.1 overs to ensure there was no twist in the tale. Karthik was unbeaten on 62 off 57 with two sixes and five fours, while Mukund had 58 when the winning runs were scored.Group B
Indian Oil Corporation’s middle order lost their nerve in a tight chase as Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited emerged victorious in a contest that was reduced to 21 overs a side in Chennai. Despite the defeat, IOC edged ahead of BPCL at the top of the table on the basis of net run-rate and qualified for the semi-finals.Chasing 135 for victory, Ravikant Shukla and Rohit Sharma put IOC on course, after early impetus from Wasim Jaffer, by adding 56 in 10.4 overs. With 27 runs needed from 25 balls, Rohit was bowled by Avishkar Salvi and thereafter panic set in. Four wickets fell in quick succession, three of them run out as IOC lost the plot under pressure. Shitanshu Kotak bowled a nerveless couple of overs in the death, including the last over of the match. IOC needed three off the last two balls, but lost wickets off both to fall short.Earlier Rajesh Pawar and Vikrant Yeligati led a strong comeback in the second half of BPCL’s innings, to reduce them from 95 for 2 in the 13th over to a final score of 134 for 9. However, IOC’s batsmen were unable to make their efforts count.Group C
Naman Ohja, the captain, led from the front as a clinical Air India side comprehensively outplayed State Bank of Mysore in Hyderabad. The win gave Air India a clean sweep of their three group matches and put them in the semi-finals.Ohja pummelled 84 from 58 balls, with nine fours and five sixes, as Air India raced to their target of 145 in less than 20 overs, losing one wicket along the way. Ohja and Chandan Madan put on 125 for the first wicket, off 14 overs, and were particularly harsh on Sreenath Aravind, whose four overs went for 54. Madan remained unbeaten on 54.State Bank of Mysore were bowled out for 144 in 39.2 overs, with Air India’s bowlers sharing the wickets around. Left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan was the pick of them, taking 3 for 30, while seamer Dhawal Kulkarni finished with 3 for 44.M Vijay’s century and Rajagopal Sathish’s late-overs heroics helped Chemplast chase down a target of 289 with relative ease and consign Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited to a five-wicket defeat in Hyderabad. The result had no impact at the top of Group C, with Air India qualifying after winning all their three games.Chemplast’s decision to field came unstuck immediately as Monish Mishra launched into their attack with gay abandon in his 63-ball 80. Arindam Das was more sedate at the other end, scoring 43 off 60 balls in a stand worth 97. After the early damage, Chemplast checked BSNL in the middle overs through the trio of Piyush Chawla, R Jesuraj and Syed Mohammad, who accounted for seven wickets in all. Kuldeep Diwan lashed around for 26 off 11 balls to lift the score to 288.Chemplast’s chase was a perfect example of how to go after tall targets, with the batting line-up supporting Vijay, who ensured he scored a century. Most of the bowlers took some tap, barring Salil Yadav, who picked up 3 for 40, the third of his scalps being Vijay for 112 off 114 balls. With 81 required off 11 overs, BSNL sensed a chance to snatch victory, but Sathish had plans of his own. He smashed four sixes and nine fours in a dazzling display of strokeplay that ended the game with 25 balls to spare.Group DIncome Tax (India) qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament with a comprehensive six-wicket win over MRF in Bangalore. Set a target of 284, Income Tax got a flying start from openers Hiken Shah and Ameya Shrikhande, and raced to victory in under 36 overs, to finish top of the group and qualify for the semi-finals.The opening pair put on 78 in less than eight overs, with Shah making 50 off 28 balls with eight fours and two sixes. His dismissal did not slow Income Tax’s progress, with Shrikhande and Amol Ubarhande adding a further 76 in 7.2 overs. Ubarhande was eventually out for 76, the top score of the innings.MRF’s innings was built around a solid 82 from Venugopal Rao, who put on 96 with Umashankar Sushul for the fourth wicket. Sridharan Sriram chipped in with 58. Parag Khanpurkar was the best of the Income Tax bowlers with 2 for 48.Oil & Natural Gas Corporation bowed out of the tournament with a six-wicket win against State Bank of Patiala, with 27.3 overs to spare, in Bangalore. ONGC’s bowlers stuck to their task after winning the toss, striking at regular intervals to ensure SBP never got going. Munaf Patel began the slide, dismissing openers Ravi Inder Singh and R Rehni in his opening spell. Praveen Kumar kept the pressure on at the other end with a nagging spell before Sumit Narwal and Amit Mishra scythed through the middle order. Late resistance from Sarabjit Ladda took SBP past 100, but it was nowhere near sufficient to trouble ONGC.Despite the early losses of Virat Kohli and Sandeep Sharma, the chase stayed on course thanks to Tanmay Srivastava and Gagan Khoda who struck forties take their side to the brink of victory. Ladda picked two wickets towards the end, but by then the result was in no doubt.Semi-final line-up

Aston Villa: Gerrard wants Olsen

Aston Villa are on course to seal the permanent signing of goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

What’s the Word?

That’s according to Football Insider, who claim that a source has revealed that Villa are in advanced talks to sign Olsen on a permanent deal from AS Roma – the 32-year-old shot-stopper who has been at the Premier League side on loan since January.

With just over a year left on his Roma contract, Gerrard could secure the services of Olsen on the cheap and he would provide solid cover for Emiliano Martinez next season.

Robin Olsen would provide excellent cover at Villa

During the first half of the campaign, Olsen was plying his trade at Sheffield United in the Championship, turning out 17 times for the Blades whilst only keeping one clean sheet.

This didn’t stop player John Egan from boosting the £13k-per-week keeper’s confidence, stating in the media that the Swede had a “big presence” and that they “were lucky to have him”.

Massive praise for someone who often let in too many goals during his tenure in the Championship. However, his international experience plus his age could well prove to make him a huge coup for Gerrard and Johan Lange.

Despite not making a first-team appearance for the side since his arrival, he has obviously impressed Steven Gerrard and the coaching staff. The Swede does have prior experience in the top flight, however, featuring for Everton on 11 occasions in the 2020-2021 season.

With further progress needed to show the board that he is moving in the right direction; Gerrard will be aiming to utilise his funds carefully and not squander vital cash on poor signings.

European football must be the aim and that is why the board went all out to secure his services from Rangers in November. The former England captain faces a huge summer ahead.

Batsmen cash in on flat pitch

New Zealand A’s batsmen dominated the opening day of the second unofficial Test against Zimbabwe A on another benign pitch, this time at the Country Club in Harare

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Oct-2010
Scorecard
New Zealand A’s batsmen dominated the opening day of the second unofficial Test against Zimbabwe A on another benign pitch, this time at the Country Club in Harare. Openers Tim McIntosh and Jamie How put on an unflustered 160 for the first wicket, How reaching a 13th first-class hundred before he was caught behind off Njabulo Ncube. Njabulo’s two economical wickets meant he was the most impressive bowler on show, and New Zealand eased to a massive 329 for 4 at stumps.Visiting captain James Franklin opted for first use of a flat pitch after winning the toss and after seeing off the new ball his openers made light work of Zimbabwe’s change bowlers. McIntosh fell after passing a relatively sedate half-century, edging seamer Taurai Muzarabani behind, but How continued unabated even after the loss of Daniel Flynn to Malcolm Waller’s offspin. After his dismissal for 115, Martin Guptill eased towards a fifty but fell four runs short to become Ncube’s second victim before Franklin and wicketkeeper Reece Young settled in against the old ball. Franklin neared his own half-century, finishing unbeaten on 44 as Zimbabwe failed to break through after taking the second new ball shortly before the close of play.

Ex-Celtic hero takes title swipe at rivals

Former Celtic striker Charlie Nicholas has taken a swipe at Rangers ahead of this weekend’s Old Firm derby, suggesting they have simply borrowed the title for a year.

The Lowdown: Huge game at Parkhead

The Hoops face one of their biggest Scottish Premiership games of the season on Sunday afternoon, as they entertain their biggest rivals at Parkhead.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have opened up a six-point lead on Rangers with four matches remaining, highlighting the importance of the weekend clash.

Celtic won 2-1 at Ibrox earlier this month, which will give them undoubted confidence, although Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men did get revenge in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-4/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Latest: Nicholas makes bold claim

Speaking to the Express [via The Daily Record], Nicholas put the boot in on Rangers, saying from what he’s seen the title chase is already over:

“The Premiership trophy will be coming home to Celtic Park after this weekend. The mood seems to be that we have let Rangers borrow our trophy for one year but now we’re taking it back.

“Sunday’s Old Firm match is a must-win for Rangers but I still think the title is over because Celtic’s games in the run-in are all winnable.”

The Verdict: Celtic’s title to lose

There is no doubt that the title is very much Celtic’s to lose now, having enjoyed a superb first season with Postecoglou at the helm.

Victory over Rangers on Sunday would surely seal the deal – almost mathematically, in fact – and it would be richly deserved after such a consistent campaign.

For all Nicholas’ bravado, however, the Hoops must not take their rivals for granted, with defeat this weekend suddenly giving the title race a very different complexion and their cup loss proof of what they are capable of.

Mohsin Khan denies 'dummy selector' claim

Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s chief selector, responded to criticism over his position and committee, angrily rejected claims that he is a “dummy selector”

Mohsin Khan hit back at claims that he’s the PCB chairman’s stooge•AFP

Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s chief selector, responded to criticism over his position and committee, angrily rejecting claims that he is a “dummy selector”.Mohsin came under fire at a press conference at Karachi’s National Stadium, held ostensibly to announce the comeback of Younis Khan into the national fold but one that soon turned into a heated questioning over the influence of board chairman Ijaz Butt on selection matters.Criticism of Mohsin’s tenure has grown steadily almost from the moment he was appointed in March. Since then he has had to face charges of bias and non-consultative selection. More recently, after announcing the squad for the limited-overs and Test series against South Africa, questions were asked about the timing of the announcement – made before the domestic Twenty20 tournament – as well as the increasingly marginalised role of the coach and captain in selection and the greater one of the board head.In a recent hearing at the national assembly’s standing committee of sports, coach Waqar Younis publicly expressed his unhappiness at not being consulted. “It is not in my contract to consult captain and coach,” Mohsin said. “With the experience of international cricket I feel the captain and coach should be involved. But it depends on policy. This time the captain wasn’t announced and the coach was outside. We were told they need a team so we gave a team. After it, we could consult them and we did so.”Those consultations brought the belated selection of Wahab Riaz and Shahzaib Hasan for the limited overs portion of the South Africa series. Shahzaib’s call-up came after a sterling performance in the Twenty20 competition, where he played an integral part in Karachi Dolphins’ run to the final. But Mohsin defended announcing the squad before the tournament, claiming that the focus of the series with South Africa wasn’t on T20Is.”The T20 tournament was not a selection criteria,” Mohsin said. “Shahzaib is a talented guy so we brought him in. We picked him earlier for the Asia Cup and England tour but he disappointed there and we didn’t pick him again. But we feel there is a very good player in him and his T20 performance was great. The basic concentration of this tour is not T20s but Tests and ODIs. Because the series is in Dubai, where conditions are close to Pakistan and Shahzaib is a good strokeplayer.”There has been growing concern during Mohsin’s tenure of the influence Butt has on the shaping of national squads. One ex-selector told ESPNcricinfo last week that Mohsin only took instructions from the chairman and announced the squad without consulting his own committee. “This is not true at all,” Mohsin replied. “The chairman’s involvement only comes when the team has to be finally approved, because of discipline, fitness and those issues. Only the final approval comes from chairman.”Asked directly whether he was a “dummy selector,” Mohsin replied: “The words you have used, I could also but I don’t get into that language. I am not the chairman of the PCB, I am chairman of the selection committee and that has some rules through which you make a team. The final approval comes from the chairman and this has been happening for a long time.”
