Lampard must axe Kenny from Everton side

Everton will host Brentford in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday afternoon, with Frank Lampard leading his first game in front of the home fans and will be hoping that he can make a good first impression by securing progression in the domestic competition.

The ex-Chelsea boss will have his first opportunity to pick a team and a formation that is going to change the fate that Everton have faced so far, with a series of bad performances leading the side to a poor season in the league.

However, a good FA cup run could be a real positive start for Lampard if he can complete the challenge in getting a victory over Brentford this afternoon.

Both the signings that were made in the January transfer window by Lampard on Deadline Day won’t be available to start in the side today. Donny Van de Beek and Dele Alli are unfortunately cup tied, so we will have to wait until the Toffees return to action in the Premier League on Tuesday to see them make their debut.

One player who could get their chance today is Nathan Patterson, he was signed by Rafa Benitez in early January but has failed to be picked for the first team since his arrival.

The 20 year old was spotted in the new manager’s initial training sessions this week, and with Lampard well known for developing youth and giving chances to young prospects, this could be the perfect opportunity for him to make a good impression on the legendary midfielder turned manager.

With that being said, Lampard must drop Jonjoe Kenny from the side in this important FA Cup clash against Brentford, whilst considering his other options going forward, with the right back not being able to make a positive impact in defence when he has played this season for the Toffees.

The 24 year old, who was hailed “aggressive” by Jamie Carragher, has only made seven appearances for Everton this season and despite being offensively effective bagging two assists, has been poor in his defensive play, losing possession at least 10 times on average every game and picking up no clean sheets when he has played in the back line in the Premier League according to SofaScore.

Ultimately, axing the £15k-p/w dud in the upcoming game gives Patterson the chances to shine and make a positive impact on the team, giving Lampard the opportunity to see if the Scottish youngster has what it takes to play in the side, and potentially giving him more options in the position over the remaining months of the season.

Kervezee carries Derbyshire into ascendancy

Alexei Kervezee laid on a family celebration with a maiden first-class century as Worcestershire systematically put Derbyshire on the rack in the County Championship at New Road. The 20-year-old batsman’s Rotterdam-based parents were in the crowd when the milestone was reached during the home side’s progress to a declaration at 559 for 8, the biggest total in Division Two this season. After being kept in the field for 142 overs, Derbyshire required 410 to avoidthe follow-on and immediately they were in trouble, collapsing to 138 for 6against an impressive Worcestershire seam attack.Richard Jones, Alan Richardson and Jack Shantry found much more life in thepitch and five catches were safely held, from wicketkeeper Ben Scott to Daryl Mitchell and Vikram Solanki in the slips.Only Chris Rogers, with seven fours and a six in reaching 50, made any headwayin the top order until he was well taken by Mitchell for the first of twowickets in four balls for Richardson.Derbyshire’s troubles were in complete contrast to Worcestershire’sfree-and-easy batting against a lacklustre attack.Kervezee, dropped first ball on the opening day, joined three other Dutchplayers who scored centuries in the County Championship – Roland Lefebvre(Somerset), Bas Zuiderent (Sussex) and Ryan ten Doeschate (Essex). In making 130 in a highly entertaining innings, spanning 175 balls andincluding 15 fours and three sixes, he overcame the curse of the nervous 90s.His highest first-class score for Holland is 98 and in his last match forWorcestershire he was dismissed for 99 against Leicestershire at Grace Road. For one heart-stopping moment it seemed he would suffer the same fate againstDerbyshire. Again on 99, he went for a big shot off Robin Peterson but failed toconnect. Fortunately he retained his balance and survived as wicketkeeper TomPoynton appealed for a stumping. In Peterson’s next over, Kervezee picked the right ball to be swept tomidwicket and, with the elusive hundred finally on the board from 150 balls, hecontinued his swashbuckling performance. The end was typical of his approach to batting. In successive balls from TomLungley, he could have been caught in front of the pavilion and then smashed acatch to Peterson at mid-on.Derbyshire took two other wickets in the morning. James Cameron, making hisfirst-class debut, went for 25 when chasing a ball from Steffan Jones and BenSmith was leg-before to Peterson. The hard-worked left-arm spinner claimed two more wickets after lunch, finishing with 4 for 170 from 47 overs, but only after a partnership of 67 byScott (40 not out) and Gareth Andrew (33).

Forget Masuaku: Moyes must finally unleash "tremendous" 21 y/o West Ham sensation - opinion

With West Ham United manager David Moyes recently revealing that Arthur Masuaku is set to see a specialist regarding a knee injury, the 58-year-old has been left with just one fit senior option in the position – Aaron Cresswell.

And, with the 32-year-old having himself picked up a number of niggling injuries in recent seasons, not least a knock to his back which saw him sidelined for all of the hectic Christmas period, it is easy to see why Moyes had targeted the signing of a left-sided defender this January.

However, with no new left-back having been signed last month, and the condition of Masuaku looking rather uncertain, now would very much appear to be the perfect time for the Scotsman to take a closer look at one of the club’s most exciting up and coming youth prospects in the shape of Emmanuel Longelo.

“Tremendous” talent

Having been linked with a switch to all of Wycombe Wanderers, Ipswich Town, Peterborough United and Nottingham Forest last month, the 21-year-old left-back is clearly a player who many believe has a bright future in the professional game.

Indeed, the £135k-rated defender has highly impressed for the Hammers U23 side this season, registering three assists over his 13 Premier League 2 appearances, in addition to averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.00 in his three Papa John’s Trophy outings.

This form even led to Moyes handing the youngster his Europa League debut in the 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb, a game in which, despite the scoreline, Longelo once again impressed, enjoying 87 touches of the ball, completing 36 passes, attempting seven long balls and four crosses, as well as successfully completing one dribble.

The 21-year-old who Dmitri Halajko dubbed a “tremendous” talent also made a total of two tackles, one interception, three clearances and won four of his five ground duels – with these metrics seeing the left-back average a very respectable SofaScore match rating of 6.7 against the Croatian outfit.

As such, with the games coming thick and fast for West Ham in the coming weeks, it would appear an extremely wise move for Moyes to finally unleash Longelo in the Premier League.

Indeed, not only would this help to keep Cresswell injury-free in the absence of Masuaku, but it would also help further develop an extremely exciting youth prospect – something that could end up saving the club millions in pounds of transfer fees this summer.

More trouble for Pawar over IPL bid

Sharad Pawar’s claims of not being involved in a bid for a Pune franchise in the IPL has been contradicted by information in a document describing the minutes of a board meeting of a company in which Pawar has a stake

Sharad Pawar’s claim of not being involved in an IPL franchise bid has been contradicted•AFP

The former BCCI president Sharad Pawar and his family’s claims of not being involved in a bid for a Pune franchise in the IPL has been contradicted by information in a document describing the minutes of a board meeting of a company in which Pawar has a stake. The document reveals that on January 31, the Pune-based City Corporation had given Aniruddh Deshpande, its managing director, the permission to make a bid on “behalf” of the company during the auction in March. This calls into question Pawar’s earlier stance that Deshpande had made the bid entirely in his individual capacity and the board had given him permission to do so at the board’s meeting on March 17. Pawar, his wife Pratibha Pawar and his daughter Supriya Sule (a Member of Parliament) own a 16.22% stake in City Corporation. Pawar had said the reason he did not reveal his family’s stake in the company was because “there was no necessity felt to do so”. Sule had said that at the March 17 meeting it was resolved that the company will have nothing to do with the bid.But the minutes of the January 31 meeting, a copy of which is available with Cricinfo, states that Deshpande was asked to go ahead with the bid in the company’s name. According to the excerpts of the minutes of the January meeting the board “resolved that the company do and hereby authorize Mr Aniruddha Deshpande to represent the company in participating, bidding, winning & operating IPL franchisee from Pune in IPL-4 & onwards and to sign any agreement and other documents on behalf of the company in relation to participating in the bidding process of the IPL.”In his defence, Deshpande told the that the January 31 meeting was to “enable” him to exercise his bid in his personal capacity.Sule, meanwhile, continued to maintain that neither she nor her father had done anything wrong. “We don’t know anything about this because Mr Pawar and I don’t sit on the company’s Board. I don’t know why a mountain is being made out of a molehill,” she said. “How would we know? Have we signed any resolution? Do we sit on the Board? So how can we be held responsible for that?”Sule insisted that Deshpande was going to find a new set of shareholders if he had won the bid. “When Mr Deshpande submitted the bid to the BCCI, he had given a note that the shareholders may change as there will be a new consortium made if they win the bid and they lost the bid.”The BCCI is clearly unhappy with the situation. Reacting to Lalit Modi’s allegation on Friday that interim IPL chairman Chirayu Amin, too, was involved in the City Corporation bid, Shashank Manohar, the Indian board president, released a public statement, asking why Modi had not informed the board that Deshpande was bidding on his own.”Mr Modi has also made a statement that Mr Aniruddha Deshpande, MD City Corporation Ltd, had informed him that though the bid was submitted on behalf of City Corporation Ltd, it was in fact a personal bid on behalf of himself,” Manohar wrote. “Mr Modi, who claims to be above board in all matters, did not think this very cogent and important piece of information should be shared with Governing Council Members /Officials.”However, through his vehement attack against Modi, Manohar has also indirectly contradicted Pawar’s claim that the bid had not been made in City Corporation’s name. It is also understood that since Pawar is not part of any of the IPL franchises, he is clear of any wrongdoing as far as the BCCI are concerned.Pawar is a street-smart politician who has lost only one election in his entire life, but he will need all of his resourcefulness to get out of the embarrassing situation surrounding his links with a failed IPL bid.

Celtic: Albian Ajeti is stealing a living

Having joined Celtic in a £5m move back in 2020, expectations were high for Albian Ajeti at Parkhead.

Indeed, Neil Lennon stated upon the Switzerland international’s arrival in Glasgow: “We are delighted to bring Albian to Celtic. He is a tremendous player, an international with real quality and I know he is really determined to do all he can to bring more success to our supporters.

“I have admired him for a long time as he is a really intelligent footballer, well balanced and a really good finisher. We are so pleased to make him a Celtic player and we hope he has a long and prosperous career with us.”

However, despite this early expectation, just one and a half years down the line, the 24-year-old’s career in Glasgow already appears to all but be at an end, with Ajeti having been heavily linked with a move away from Celtic in the January transfer window.

Indeed, following Ange Postecoglou’s signings of Kyogo Furuhashi, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Daizen Maeda, Ajeti now appears to be well down the attacking pecking order at Celtic Park – something that is hardly surprising considering the £2.25m-rated man’s returns since joining the club.

Over his 48 appearances for the Hoops, the former West Ham United striker has scored just nine goals and registered five assists, while he also earned an extremely disappointing seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.85 over his 20 Premiership appearances in 2020/21 – ranking him as Celtic’s joint 12th-worst performer in the league last season.

Things have not improved for the £18k-per-week striker this time around, either, with the forward averaging a match rating of 6.72 over his seven league outings, before sustaining a “significant” hamstring injury back in December.

These returns have, rather understandably, seen the 11-time capped international come in for criticism, with Packie Bonner stating of the 24-year-old: “If he’s not scoring goals, what else is he doing? That’s the problem. What else is he doing? How does he lend himself to the team?”

As such, considering the fact that Ajeti has so far cost the Bhoys roughly £6.5m in wages and transfer fees combined over his 79-week stay at Celtic Park, it is clear for all to see that the centre-forward is stealing a living from the Hoops – something that Postecoglou simply must address this summer.

Ajmal Shahzad marked his selection in the England Test squad with a four-wicket haul as Yorkshire Carnegie maintained their 100% winning record in the Clydesdale Bank 40 League with an eight-wicket win over Middlesex Panthers. The 24-year-old, selected in the 12-man Test squad to face Pakistan on Thursday, took 4 for 34 as Yorkshire coasted to a comfortable victory. Shahzad’s efforts together with a fine unbeaten innings of 86 by Jacques Rudolph means Yorkshire top Group B with five wins from as many games.Middlesex, who won the toss and elected to bat, were never really in the game after losing three wickets in the opening nine overs. The initial breakthrough came from only the eighth ball of the afternoon when Shahzad enticed Scott Newman to edge an attempted drive and Jonathan Bairstow claimed a simple catch.Neil Dexter was the next to go when, after hitting five boundaries in a promising 25, he tried to lift Tim Bresnan over the top but only managed the find Steve Patterson at mid-on. Bresnan, a surprise omission from the England Test squad when it was announced earlier today, then claimed his second wicket after Owais Shah had made an ill-fated attempt at hooking a short delivery for Bairstow to again take the catch behind the stumps. With Middlesex struggling on 38 for three, Dawid Malan and Gareth Berg stabilised the innings by adding 61 runs in 15.4 overs before Malan was dismissed for 28 when the left-hander flicked a flighted delivery from David Wainwright to Richard Pyrah. After that, wickets fell on a regular basis with Bairstow collecting his third catch as John Simpson edged an Adil Rashid delivery. A poorly-executed sweep from Gareth Berg saw the South African top-edge Wainwright to Andrew Gale before Tom Scollay, after hitting a useful 32 from 18 deliveries, was bowled by Shahzad. The 24-year-old then claimed the wickets of Tom Smith and Shaun Udal in the final over as Middlesex finished on 183 for 9. Yorkshire enjoyed a fine start with Gale and Rudolph helping the visitors reach 50 in 10.4 overs. The century stand duly followed 10 overs later before Middlesex finally made a breakthrough when Gale was stumped by Simpson to give Australian Scollay his first wicket in English domestic cricket. Adam Lyth then offered a return catch to Pedro Collins on 34 but Yorkshire would not be denied as Rudolph pushed on to finish unbeaten on 86 and ensure the visitors won with 18 balls to spare.
