Aston Villa battling West Ham for Gabigol

Aston Villa are in the race to sign Flamengo star Gabriel Barbosa, but are set to face stiff competition from a Premier League rival.

What’s the story?

According to Eurosport, Steven Gerrard’s side are battling West Ham to land the 25-year-old, with both clubs exploring the option of signing a new striker on a short-term loan deal in January.

It’s claimed that with Gabriel now potentially becoming available on loan, the striker himself will weigh up his options before deciding on his next move.

Exciting signing for Villa

Affectionately known as Gabigol, the 25-year-old has scored an incredible 84 goals for Flamengo in 124 appearances – that includes 29 strikes in just 43 matches during the course of the 2020/2021 season. In total, he has 129 goals to his name over the course of his professional career thus far.

It’s unsurprising then that he’s seemingly etched himself into folklore in Brazilian football with Flamengo, and, talking about the forward back in February, Brazil icon Zico declared: “I think Gabigol has everything to be the greatest striker in Flamengo’s history. It’s getting there. His performance got better and better, consolidating himself as one of the greats. He’s already gone down in history.”

While he may not have really showcased his skills outside his native Brazil – he hardly set the world alight in his short spells in Italy and Portugal – a short-term deal could prove to be a masterclass for both him and Villa.

It would get rid of any of the weight and expectation that would come with a big-money move, and allow him to just come in a bit more freely. In turn, it would also give Villa some valuable added depth up front, while he can also operate out wide and just behind the number nine too.

It has all the hallmarks of being a potentially very exciting signing for Villa this January.

Meanwhile, Villa have made this man their top January target…

Celtic dealt major Kyogo blow

Celtic have been dealt a potentially major blow ahead of their upcoming Old Firm clash in February.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by The Sunday Post, the technical director of Japan’s international side, Yasuharu Sorimach, revealed that he will be presenting a special case to the Japanese government in a bid to convince them to allow Kyogo Furuhashi to enter the country in order to play in Japan’s crucial World Cup qualifying fixtures against China and Suadi Arabia on January 27 and February 1.

At present, Japan have restrictions in place which ban all overseas visitors from entering their country, however, should Sorimach be successful in making an exception for the Celtic centre-forward, and the 26-year-old does link up with his international side at the end of next month, it would subsequently rule him out of contention to feature in the Bhoys’ rescheduled Old Firm clash on February 2.

Speaking about Kyogo’s situation, Sorimach said: “The Japanese government should know the significance of our participation in the World Cup in Qatar. I believe we will negotiate various conditions for the games against China and Saudi Arabia. It is imperative we have our best squad for the game. At the moment, I am praying, and keeping an hourly watch on the [pandemic] trends.”

Fans will be outraged

Considering just how important a part of the Celtic side Kyogo has become since his £4.6m move to Parkhead this summer, the news that the striker could miss out on what is undoubtedly one of the Hoops’ biggest games of the season as a result of international duty is sure to have left fans outraged.

Indeed, over his 14 Premiership appearances this season, the £1.8m-rated man has already scored eight goals, registered two assists and created four big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.2 shots and making 1.2 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £18k-per-week forward average a SofaScore match rating of 7.07, ranking him as Ange Postecoglou’s 10th-best performer in the top flight of Scottish football.

Furthermore, the Japan international has bagged a further eight goals and three assists over 12 outings in the Europa League, Europa League qualifying and the League Cup – taking the 26-year-old’s total to 16 strikes and five assists in just 26 outings for Celtic.

As such, being without the services of Kyogo in the Old Firm clash will undoubtedly come as a major blow to the Bhoys’ chances of taking all three points from the fixture – something that could all but end Postecoglou’s hopes of securing the Premiership title come next May.

'Fighter' Collingwood ready for the final round

At the end of a batsman’s career, history rates them by how many hundreds they have scored for their country, but for Paul Collingwood there should be an extra column. How many Tests he has saved for England

At the end of a batsman’s career, history rates them by how many hundreds they have scored for their country, but for Paul Collingwood there should be an extra column. How many Tests he has saved for England. In the last eight months he has played a major role in three great escapes with backs-to-the-wall efforts at Cardiff, Centurion and most recently Cape Town.In the first Test against South Africa he made 26 off 99 balls to ensure England’s late jitters didn’t cost them the match, but his 188-ball 40 at Cape Town was on a whole new level. The team were five down before the second ball was taken and the result looked a foregone conclusion. But somehow Collingwood survived a withering new-ball burst from Dale Steyn and defied South Africa until into the final hour. There was another late wobble – it really wouldn’t be England without one – but his five-hour partnership with Ian Bell meant the visitors hold a 1-0 lead heading into the final Test at the Wanderers. Collingwood has nine Test centuries, and made 91 at Durban in this series, but his match-saving efforts are what he savours.”They are right up there if I’m honest,” he said. “Centurion was a very satisfying innings but for some reason last week at Cape Town – we were five down pretty early and backs against the wall – I always had the belief we could do it. It was such an important game for us.”It’s very hard to measure those kinds of innings because it’s not about runs. It’s about the time you spend in the middle, the attitude you show to the other players that we can do it. In many ways I always think they are worth a hundred, but because you haven’t got the runs it doesn’t come across that way. To get across the line like we have done in this series it’s a big achievement.”Right from the beginning of his Test career Collingwood has shown the ability to fight it out when the going is at its toughest. When he was recalled to face Australia, at The Oval, in 2005 he played a vital role on the final afternoon alongside Kevin Pietersen’s thrilling 158. Collingwood only made 10, but used up 51 balls in a stand of 60 that extended England’s precious lead.”Those are the situations I do really, really enjoy,” he said. “I like – not upsetting the opposition – but just going out there and doing things that are not easy to do. I know I must bore people at times. But it’s a job I enjoy doing, and I hope there are more of those kind of innings in the future.”I am a fighter. I always have been, since growing up with my brother, from my early teens. I’m sure I’ll keep that kind of fighting spirit all the way through my career.”Given Collingwood’s history of rescuing his country, the Cape Town effort didn’t come as a huge surprise, unlike that of his main partner, Bell, who set a new benchmark for his career with a 213-ball 78. Collingwood believes it can be a turning point for Bell, who has often been criticised for making easy runs when the going is good.”At Durban he played a fantastic innings, he timed the ball well, he scored elegantly, but I’m sure he’s come off the other day and thought that’s probably worth more runs than he scored at Durban,” Collingwood said. “That was a fantastic knock from him. From being under pressure a couple of games ago to turn that around and to show he as the mental strength to see out a day will certainly give him a lot for the future.”The South Africans acknowledge the role Collingwood has played in this series. “He has shown the quality player he is and his experience has come into play,” Jacques Kallis said. “Perhaps he’s not the prettiest player in the world, but you’d rather take the guys who are ugly and get the runs than pretty players who don’t always produce the goods.”Those fighting qualities could well come the fore again this week as England aim to secure a memorable series triumph. With South Africa having no option but to attack for victory all the talk is of a lively pitch although that doesn’t concern Collingwood.”Let’s be honest they’re not going to produce a flat, flat wicket where it’s going to turn out to be a draw,” he said. “South Africa are in a position where they need a win and to do that, they’ve got to gamble a little bit.”This wicket does tend to go through a lot more anyway and you get a bit more bounce here. Then if they leave a bit more grass on, it will obviously seam around a bit. It could be a difficult week for the batsmen. But it’s all about adjusting to conditions. Whatever we come up against, it’s the same for both sides. The team that adapts best will win.”So far in this series it is England who have adapted best to the challenges that have faced them and in no small part that has been down to Collingwood. For England’s born fighter there’s one round to go.

Steyn credits ball change before tea

The South African fast bowler has credited his seven-wicket haul in India’s first innings to a ball change just before tea. India lost six wickets for 12 runs after tea, Steyn taking five of them

Dale Steyn has credited his seven-wicket haul in India’s first innings to a ball change just before tea. India lost six wickets for 12 runs after tea, Steyn taking five of them.”There was a ball change around tea time [it was actually a couple of overs before tea], the seam had split open…we came back after tea and the ball looped around a bit. It [change of ball] was a good thing,” Steyn said after the day’s play.Asked what was different from conditions in the home series against England, Steyn said: “We have been speaking about these kind of wickets. We wanted to adapt as quickly as possible. We hit the right areas with the same intensity. On some days you can bowl the best of your life and not pick wickets and then you have some days.”The decision to follow on, he said, was taken by captain Graeme Smith after consultation with the bowlers. “There was a huddle after the Indian first innings. The batters came and told us that we were 300-odd runs ahead and asked if the bowlers had enough gas in the tank to go on and bowl another 26-27 overs.”We said we were not finished yet and it would be good to take a couple of wickets in the second innings. We told them we had enough fuel in the tank. We were looking to take a couple of wickets by stumps and then we would come back tomorrow and finish the job.”

West Brom given Kyle Bartley injury boost

Valerien Ismael has eased fears surrounding an injury to Kyle Bartley during West Brom’s FA Cup defeat to Brighton, saying that it is nothing serious.

The Lowdown: Baggies beaten by Seagulls

The Baggies exited the cup at the third round stage on Saturday afternoon, losing 2-1 to the Seagulls after extra time at The Hawthorns.

It was Ismael’s side who took the lead but an equaliser for the visitors took the game into an additional 30 minutes and they went on to win, with West Brom not helped by Cedric Kipre’s red card.

Bartley picked up a knock towards the end of the game which immediately caused concern, with the centre-back set to be a key figure between now and the end of the season. He is certainly needed now with so many others in his position unavailable due to injury, suspension or international commitments.

The Latest: Bartley fears eased

However, speaking after the match [via Birmingham Mail], Ismael claimed that there was no major issue regarding the West Brom defender. He outlined:

“I think it’s not too bad at the minute. For sure, he’ll have some assessment Sunday and after, but the next game is Saturday so we have lots of time between the two games to get the recovery.

“I’m not worried about him. I think it was more tiredness, and to play 120 minutes with a kick on the ankle. Our medical staff will do their job to make sure the player is back for Saturday game.”

The Verdict: Big boost

West Brom fans can breathe a huge sigh of relief, with Bartley a pivotal figure in their team’s Championship promotion charge, starting 23 league games this season and achieving the second-highest WhoScored performance rating in Ismael’s squad.

At 30, the centre-back possesses a huge amount of experience but is still arguably in his peak years, so losing him for an extended period could have been an almighty blow, having been hailed as ‘brilliant’ by journalist Chris Lepkowski.

As it is, there seems a strong chance that Bartley will be available for the trip to Queens Park Rangers next Saturday, which will come as a big boost to the Albion faithful following his scare over the weekend.
