Ndombele must start in Spurs’ crunch match

Antonio Conte must turn to the rarely-seen Tanguy Ndombele for Tottenham Hotspur’s upcoming festive fixtures, once they are able to return to action.

Sat just outside the top four and in need of a win in their final Europa Conference League group game, Spurs could do with someone of his calibre in the final third.

Conte and co are in need of some sort of saviour as his squad could be depleted going forward due to a viral outbreak amongst the Lilywhites camp this week – according to football.london, as many as seven first-team players have tested positive by a lateral flow test.

Provided Ndombele isn’t one of those, which he is unlikely to be after footage surfaced of training this week, he could hold the keys to Spurs enjoying some success in an absolute time of need.

He would provide the north Londoners with a player capable of driving the ball into the final third, and that’s what will be needed to boost their chances of transforming their fortunes in attack.

After all, scoring goals has largely been the biggest problem facing the team, with leading striker Harry Kane sitting on just one goal in the Premier League so far this season.

Only Norwich City (10.7) have managed fewer shots per game than Spurs (10.9), via WhoScored, whilst they are inside the bottom seven teams for expected goals (17.83 xG), even though they are on the cusp of a top-four spot.

Despite only starting five top-flight games, Ndombele is among Conte’s most prolific ball-carriers, having averaged 2.4 successful dribbles per 90 minutes, which is only bettered by Lucas Moura (3.5) of those who have played more than 400 minutes this term.

Elsewhere, he is also capable of doing the ‘dirty work’, having managed 2.2 tackles per 90, too. That’s actually better than defenders such as Ben Davies (0.6) and Eric Dier (0.3).

Ndombele was once dubbed a “world-beater” who can be “unplayable” on his day by former Spurs teammate Joe Hart and it’s that level of performance that we need to see from him more often and consistently.

That said, he clearly poses a level of technical ability greater than the bulk of his teammates, which is why his presence is needed on the pitch, especially in the final third, in such a crucial run of fixtures.

The £26m-rated midfielder must start in Conte’s XI going forward.

SNGPL and Rawalpindi keep winning

A round-up of the latest batch of matches from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Cricinfo staff30-Oct-2009Group AMohammad Hafeez’s five-for handed Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) a crushing win against Sui Southern Gas Corporation (SSGC) at the Sheikhupura Stadium. The innings-and-115 run victory was enough to ensure top spot temporarily on the points table, though National Bank of Pakistan picked up first-innings points against Habib Bank Limited. Continuing on 418 for 6 from the previous day, the SNGPL innings was brought to a quick end by the pace atrtack of Shakeel-ur-Rehman and Waqar Ahmed. It was a bright display by Shakeel who ended with 6 for 105. Behind by 297, it would take one superb individual display to keep SSGC in the game and Bilal Asad promised with 81. But having taken out opener Asif Zakir, Hafeez accounted for the middle order as the batsmen floundered against the spin. Fittingly, he picked up the last wicket, that of Waqar, as SNGPL completed the win in the 61st over.A clinical display by the seamers, coupled with Imranullah Aslam’s quickfire 85, gave Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) full points against second-from-bottom Lahore Shalimar with a day to spare at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Resuming on 139 for 4, Lahore failed to cope with the pace of the WAPDA fast bowlers, led by Sarfraz Ahmed and Shabbir Ahmed. Sarfraz picked up three wickets to finish with a match haul of seven while Shabbir bagged four. Though the WAPDA openers departed early chasing down 157, Imranullah went in search of quick runs. He blasted 18 fours and a six during his 59-ball knock and that fast-tracked the victory, which came in the 31st over.Captain-wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed and Jannisar Khan put on a 108-run partnership for the fifth-wicket to give Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) a mammoth 240-run lead against Karachi Whites at the National Stadium. Karachi then went on to lose six wickets for 209 in their second essay with PIA looking good for a huge win. While Sarfraz scored an unbeaten 51, Jannisar was run out three short of a well-deserved half-century. Karachi needed a good start to overcome the massive deficit, but the early fall of Behram Khan did not help. Naved Khan scored 49 but the slow bowlers Jamshed Ahmed and Tahir Khan dented the opposition by taking three and two wickets respectively. Atif Ali held on with an unbeaten 42, but with little expected from the tail, avoiding the innings defeat will be his topmost priority. It was slow going for Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) as they reached 182 for 6, starting the day at 5 for no loss against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) at the Khan Research Laboratories Ground. The first-innings points they had gained may have played a major part in KRL’s approach, after ZTBL fell short by 16 runs replying to 259. But that did not hold back the ZTBL bowlers, led by right-arm paceman Junaid Nadir. While there were a couple of thirties, captain Mohammad Wasim top scored with 44, before becoming Nadir’s second victim. Nadir then had Bazid Khan caught behind for 13 just before stumps, to leave KRL on tenterhooks going into the final day.Even though Taufeeq Umar’s century and Abdur Rehman’s well-compiled 85 failed to give Habib Bank Limited (HBL) first-innings points against National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) at the Gaddafi Stadium, the HBL bowlers put in a disciplined effort to ensure that they held the upper hand at the end of the day, reducing NBP to 121 for 7. Resuming on 207 for 5, Taufeeq brought up his century, but the battle was mainly fought by Rehman, who hit 10 fours during his 104-ball stay. It was legspinner Mansoor Amjad who picked up three crucial wickets to bowl out HBL for 353, 59 behind NBP’s first-innings total. While Shahid Nazir did the early damage during NBP’s second innings, the spin duo of Danish Kaneria and Rehman ran through the middle order, picking up two wickets apiece, to keep HBL’s hopes of a win alive in this top-of-table clash.Group BLate-blooming 35-year-old fast bowler Rashid Latif captured seven wickets to hand Rawalpindi a 77-run in their top-of-the-table clash with Karachi Blues at the National Ground. After taking a vital 79-run first-innings lead in a low-scoring encounter, Rawalpindi seemed to have let the advantage slip after being bowled out for 162 and letting Karachi reach 70 for 0. Shahzaib Hasan dominated that opening stand and slammed four sixes on his way to 87, but Karachi folded after his dismissal. No one else in the top eight made it past 20 as Latif tore through the line-up. Yesterday’s hero for Karachi, Tanvir Ahmed, slammed a 27-ball 50 coming in at No. 9 but that only helped them past the 200 mark but well short of the target of 281. The two teams are now locked on 27 points but Rawalpindi have played one match less.In the only other Group B match to finish in the three days, Sialkot won by 136 runs at the Abbottabad Stadium after a frenetic day in which 19 wickets went down. The match followed a similar pattern to the Rawalpindi-Karachi game: Abbottabad fighting back after giving away a significant first-innings lead by bowling out Sialkot for 184 but the home team’s batsmen let the side down chasing 244. Left-arm fast bowler Armaghan Elahi was on fire early in the day to reduce Sialkot from their overnight 49 for 1 to 73 for 6. No. 8 batsman Ahmed Butt (42) and No. 9 Bilawal Bhatti (29) staged a fightback to give their bowlers a target above 200 to defend. Faisal Rasheed was Sialkot’s hero with the ball, taking 5 for 58, as Abbottabad folded for 107 in 37 overs. It all unravelled for Abbottabad when they lost six wickets for 17 runs after being 54 for 2.In the basement battle between Islamabad and Quetta, the stage was set for an engrossing final day at the Diamond Club ground. It is still anybody’s game: Islamabad need 33 runs, Quetta need two wickets. The match swung one way to the other through the day. After bowling out Quetta for 303, Islamabad were well on top when their openers took them to 97 in the chase of 252. It was Quetta’s turn to take charge when they their new-ball pair of Nazar Hussain and Arun Lal took three wickets each in the space of 15 runs. Islamabad clawed their way back from 112 for 6 through the efforts of Ameer Khan (47*), and a pair of twenties from tailenders Fakhar Hussain and Rauf Akbar.Hyderabad remained in control of their match against Peshawar at the Lahore Country Club. Middle-order batsman Shahid Qambrani was the mainstay of the Hyderabad second innings, making 83 to guide them to 281. They would have made an even higher total had it not been for the six wickets bagged by legspinner Mohammad Fayyaz, who polished off the lower order cheaply. Fayyaz’s heroics continued with the bat as Peshawar faced a tough target of 369; opening the innings, he remained unbeaten on a brisk 71. There was virtually no support for him though, as Peshawar finished the day on 128 for 3.A draw loomed as the likeliest outcome at the Iqbal Stadium. Lahore Ravi ended on 269 after their final three wickets consumed more than 32 overs, with Shahbaz Butt staying unbeaten on 67. Faisalabad had a slim 52-run first-innings cushion, and their openers increased the advantage by adding 147 runs. Zeeshan Asif was still batting on a cavalier 101, which included two sixes, but Imran Ali fell for a more patient 56. Faisalabad ended the day on 177 for 3, an overall lead of 229.

Umpire Benson heading for retirement

The leading umpire Mark Benson iss planning to retire from the game with immediate effect following his sudden withdrawal from the Adelaide Test

Mark Benson is planning to retire from umpiring with immediate effect following his sudden withdrawal from the Adelaide Test. The Sunday Times has reported Benson was upset over several incidents involving the Umpire Decision Review System on day one of the second Test between Australia and West Indies, one of which led to his original decision being overturned.Benson twice ruled Shivnarine Chanderpaul not-out to caught-behind appeals on Friday, both of which were challenged by the Australians. The third umpire, Asad Rauf, upheld Benson’s first ruling, prompting an angry response from the bowler, Doug Bollinger, and the Australian captain, Ricky Ponting. But it is the second video review, which resulted in Chanderpaul being ruled out for 62, that is understood to have most upset the English official. Hot Spot replays showed no evidence of the ball striking the outside edge of Chanderpaul’s bat, however other camera angles provided Rauf with enough evidence to reverse Benson’s original ruling.Cricinfo has been told an irate Benson “ranted” to colleagues in the umpire’s room after the first day’s play about his dissatisfaction with the UDRS. He is believed to have said at the time that the new system “just makes (umpiring) harder”, however ICC officials were remaining tight-lipped on the matter on Sunday.David Morgan, the ICC president, told Cricinfo Benson was “poorly” and referred other questions to David Richardson, the ICC’s general manager, and Vintcent van der Bijl, the umpire’s manager. Chris Broad, the match referee who is presiding over the Adelaide Test, denied Benson’s swift departure from Adelaide was the result of unhappiness over the UDRS. “There is absolutely no truth in that at all,” Broad said. “The review system is new to everyone and you’ve got to get used to it. He was an advocate of the review system to help umpires out.”We spoke on the second morning and he said that he was feeling unwell. I was in India with him as well where he was unwell. We thought this might well be another situation like that we were in in India. We chatted about it and he said he didn’t feel as though he could go on the field again. We decided to leave him back in the hotel. I phoned Dubai and they decided that if it was a recurrence of high blood pressure or stomach problems he had in India he needed to get it sorted out. That was the reason that I was aware he went home.”ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat also denied Benson’s return to England was related to the UDRS. “This is completely untrue. Benson has been a strong supporter of the system and his return home has nothing to do with it,” he told . “”He is not well and that’s why he is returning home. I’m sure once he reached England, he would issue a clarification.”ICC sources have told Cricinfo, however, that report is indeed accurate, and an announcement from Benson is expected after his arrival into Britain. Precisely why Benson opted to leave Adelaide before the conclusion of the second Test remains unknown.Benson stood down from two one-day internationals involving Australia and India this year due to migraines, and previously experienced heart palpitations during a Test between South Africa and India in Durban. It is understood he did not visit a hospital in Adelaide before his departure on Saturday, despite “ill health” being cited by the ICC as the cause for his departure.Controversy has always followed umpires, but scrutiny has escalated of late. Darrell Hair resorted to legal avenues after he was sidelined by the ICC for his role in the forfeited Test at The Oval between England and Pakistan two years ago, while Steve Bucknor was benched for the latter stages of the Australia-India Test series two summers ago after the BCCI complained of errors.”There’s probably less pressure on the umpires now with a review system than there was beforehand,” Broad said. “Umpires would stand out there in the morning and captains and fielders would strut around not really knowing the result of it. With the review system they know the result straight away.”

Newcastle keen on Konstantinos Mavropanos

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle’s plans to sign Arsenal loanee Konstantinos Mavropanos.

What’s the talk?

According to German outlet Sport Bild, via West Ham Zone, the Magpies are eyeing up a deal to sign the centre-back, currently on loan at Stuttgart, to bolster their squad.

The report claims that the Hammers are also keen on him, with the Bundesliga side expected to sign him permanently before demanding £21.3m from interested parties.

Get it done

PIF must splash out the £21.3m that Stuttgart want in order to bring him to Newcastle, whether that happens in January or in the summer. The form he is producing in the Bundesliga suggests that he could be a terrific signing for Eddie Howe’s team and strengthen an area of the side which is in dire need of additional help.

Defending has been a significant weak point for the Magpies this season and the signing of a new centre-back could help to alleviate that issue, which Howe would surely love. Newcastle have conceded the most goals in the Premier League (34) and are currently 19th in the table, with goal difference the only statistic preventing them from being below Norwich.

Mavropanos has been outstanding at centre-back for Stuttgart. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.41 in the Bundesliga, starting 13 games in the league. The 24-year-old is averaging 4.1 tackles and interceptions, along with an impressive six clearances, per game, showing that he has the quality to make consistent and crucial interventions at the back.

Borussia Monchengladbach chief Pellegrino Matarazzo previously hailed him as a gladiator and called him a ‘tough dog’. He said: “He’s our gladiator! He’s a monster in terms of physique. And when he makes a mistake, he hums around some Greek swear words. I like that. He’s just a tough dog.”

Howe will surely love for Newcastle to sign Mavropanos, as his statistics in Germany and these quotes from Matarazzo suggest that he is a strong centre-back who could come in and improve the club’s defensive record. The Magpies are conceding too many goals and the Greek beast has shown that he is capable of performing consistently at a top level this season.

Therefore, PIF must ensure that they are able to seal a deal to sign the Arsenal man to give the ex-Bournemouth coach the best possible chance of keeping the Geordies in the Premier League.

Ponting braced for Pakistan backlash

Ricky Ponting has warned his side to be prepared for a Pakistan backlash in the second Test at the SCG following the one-sided result in the opening match

Ricky Ponting has warned his side to be prepared for a Pakistan backlash in the second Test at the SCG following the one-sided result in the opening match. Ponting rated Australia’s bowling at the MCG during the 170-run win as the best of the past couple of years and has told his men to maintain the standard over the rest of the three-match series.”Teams are probably at their most dangerous when they’ve come off a heavy loss like last week,” Ponting said. “The challenge for us is to not get carried away with what we’ve done.”West Indies stood up to Australia in the final two games of the opening series of the local summer, but there were fewer concerns created by Pakistan at the MCG. However, Ponting is wary of their unpredictability as he plots a 2-0 series win before the final game in Hobart.”Pakistan, for as long as I can remember, can be as good as anybody going around and then an over, or a couple of overs, later, look as ordinary as anybody,” he aid. “That’s the nature of the way they play their cricket. That’s the unpredictability about them, we can’t afford to think that things will happen well for us again this week.”They’re already talking up the fact they think they can bounce back quickly. We know what to expect from them, we know they have some very talented players. Last week we had their measure, it’s up to us to make sure we start well again.”Ponting is still being hampered by an elbow problem suffered in the final Test against West Indies when he was hit by a Kemar Roach bouncer. When Chris Gayle said his side had unearthed a weakness against Ponting, the Australian captain basically challenged opposition bowlers to come after him.”I said that going into the last game and I got out playing a pull shot,” he said, having been caught at deep square leg in the second innings. “I’m more than happy for anybody to bowl there to me. I just need to play the shot a bit better than I did last week.”
