Norwich: Lampard can unleash Gilmour’s potential

Daniel Farke may have only just left the manager’s role at Norwich City, but the Canaries are reportedly already in talks with potential replacements as Sporting Director Stuart Webber aims to find a successor.

Norwich have had a shocking start to the season, with their first and only win so far coming from a 2-1 victory over Brentford last weekend. The side are currently at the bottom of the table, taking just 5 points from 11 games, as a result, Farke was sacked with immediate effect shortly after the game on Saturday evening.

Frank Lampard has since been tipped as one of the hot favourites to take over after being shortlisted for the job.

There has been a lot of buzz around the potential appointment of Lampard, specifically surrounding the connection between the former Chelsea midfielder and Norwich loan player, Billy Gilmour, who has failed to make a solid impression on the side so far.

Gilmour has been considered a promising young player, with some eye-catching displays for his national team, Scotland, in Euro 2020, as well as breaking through into Chelsea’s midfield under the former Blues boss. To better the youngster’s experience, Chelsea decided to send Gilmour on loan to Norwich this season. Farke did not appear to be impressed by the Scottish midfielder but was quick to shut down the media when asked about his lack of game time.

Farke said to reporters; “Billy is a fantastic player and we are all glad that we have him, he has already many minutes under his belt and I am pretty sure that he will add many minutes under his belt during the season.”

Lampard has been championed for his work with younger players in his time at Chelsea, giving both Gilmour and Mason Mount their Premier League debuts.

The Chelsea legend has always spoken highly of the Norwich loanee, expressing his admiration for the 20-year-old back in 2019 after a fantastic performance in the FA Cup for Chelsea.

“He’s young and, like all the youth I talk about in the squad, we need to give him time, but his talent is huge and I’m really happy with where he is,” said Lampard, “he is going to be a huge player for this club.”

If the former England international did take the Norwich job, there is plenty of young talent to unleash in the squad, with Todd Cantwell, Max Aarons, Adam Idah and Andrew Omobamidele all available for the side.

Lampard’s experience of nurturing young talent could be a perfect fit for the Canaries going forward, and his working relationship with Gilmour will be a huge asset in unlocking the potential and performances needed to get Norwich out of a tight relegation challenge ahead.

Norwich are yet to announce their new manager, however, reports have suggested that they are interested in three candidates – Lampard, Smith and Hassenhuttl.

A evolução é diária.

NUFC target Tarkowski set for Burnley exit

An update has emerged on Newcastle transfer target James Tarkowski, regarding his contractual situation at his current club.

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic, the Burnley centre-back has decided that he will not be signing an extension at Turf Moor.

The report claims that he is willing to see out the rest of the campaign with the Clarets and give his all for the side, before leaving on a free transfer to fulfil his ambitions moving forward.

Howe’s new Cook

The Magpies are reportedly interested in signing the English defender and could now land him at the end of the season without paying a penny in transfer fees. Eddie Howe was recently named as Newcastle’s latest head coach and he could find his new Steve Cook by signing Tarkowski.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-howe-ter-stegen” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

Howe kept Bournemouth up in the Premier League for four of his five top-flight seasons at the club and Cook was a staple of his side at centre-back. The experienced defender made 168 appearances in the top division under the 43-year-old’s management, proving himself to be a vital part of the Cherries’ team over the years.

Cook averaged an impressive WhoScored rating of 6.89 or higher in Bournemouth’s four seasons of survival in the Premier League and Tarkowski could come in and prove to be a similarly influential figure at the back for Howe. The Burnley defender, who Sean Dyche previously called “outstanding”, has averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.02 or higher in his full Premier League seasons since becoming a regular in the 2017/18 campaign.

The 28-year-old has proven himself to be a reliable, impressive, Premier League defender and could be an excellent signing for Howe next summer. In those four full seasons at Turf Moor, he averaged at least 4.6 aerial battles won and 4.4 clearances made per game, highlighting his strong defensive skills to keep the ball away from the net.

This shows that, like Cook did with Howe, Tarkowski has earned the right to call himself a solid top-flight centre-back having performed to a high standard for a number of years. Therefore, he could arrive at Newcastle and be Howe’s next Cook and be a mainstay in the side at centre-back to help the Magpies push on as a club.

Cann digs deep to save Cup match

St George’s skipper Lionel Cann smashed a superb unbeaten hundred as St George’s clung on to the cup in a dramatic stalemate at Wellington Oval

James Whittaker17-Aug-2009St George’s skipper Lionel Cann smashed a superb unbeaten hundred as St George’s clung on to the cup in a dramatic stalemate at Wellington Oval.It was a tale of two centuries with Somerset’s talisman Janeiro Tucker grinding out his third Cup Match treble earlier in the day to leave his side on the brink of a first victory in the east for three decades. Set 295 for victory, St George’s looked down and out on 107 for 5 with star batsman Glenn Blakeney watching on crutches from the sidelines.Somerset celebrated the key wicket of Charlie Marshall, out for a duck in his final Cup Match, as though it had won them the game. But they hadn’t counted on Cann.In his last year as skipper, the explosive batsman played the definitive captain’s innings. He combined grit and patience with his usual flamboyant stroke play to ease his side home. With Rodney Trott and later Delyone Borden blocking efficiently at the other end, St George’s made light of a potentially traumatic final 20 overs to hold on for a deserved draw.Cann dealt almost exclusively in boundaries, shutting out the good balls and crashing the bad ones out of the ground. As he brought up his century, with another four off Dwayne Leverock, he tossed his bat into the sky and leapt in the air, punching his fist in celebration. It was his first Cup Match hundred and redemption after being out on 99 last year. More importantly it was an innings that saved the match for his team.By the time he reached three figures, the game was over. Somerset had toiled in the field for more than five hours and they had run out of ideas on how to prise out the last remaining batsmen. With three overs left to bowl and St George’s on 243 for 6, still 52 runs short of their target, the captains agreed to a draw. Jacobi Robinson used a total of ten bowlers, literally throwing everything he had at St George’s in pursuit of victory. Everyone but wicketkeeper Jekon Edness had a crack. Robinson, with 2 for 35, and Leverock, 2 for 54, came the closest to engineering a win. But young pace bowlers Malachi Jones and Jordan De Silva were bafflingly under used spending much of the match as virtual spectators on the boundary wall.In the end Borden, who scored 11 from 44 balls, proved an immovable object. And the only way Somerset could have got Cann out this evening was to put a fielder in the top stand of the bleachers. After the game Cann joked that the inspiration for his run-a-ball hundred had been to try and emulate Somerset’s Mr Cup Match – Janeiro Tucker. When Tucker came to the crease just after tea last night, his side were in dire straits. They had yet to erase a deficit of 44 from the low-scoring first innings and there were three men out. But he played a dogged, gutsy knock combining first with Stephen Outerbridge (52) and then with teenage colt Deunte Darrell (32) to claw Somerset back into the match.By the time he stroked his hundredth run across a boundary that was thick with discarded shrimp and chicken bones, the wisdom of the terraces had it that it was Somerset’s game to lose.A post-lunch blitz from Jacobi Robinson, who walloped 63 from 31 balls and Tucker, who ended unbeaten on 126 from 230 balls, hardened that belief in the hearts and minds of the Somerset faithful. Sluggo and 15-year-old off-spinner Joshua Gilbert combined to quickly reduce St George’s to 53 for 3 And when Robinson himself took two wickets in two balls to get rid of the troublesome Chris Foggo, for 24, and the legendary Marshall for a duck, they had one hand on the cup.But Cann, first by sheer determination and then by sheer class, snatched it back.

Rangers secured dream deal for Steven Davis

Rangers midfielder Steven Davis is out of contract at the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether or not Giovanni van Bronckhorst wants him to remain at Ibrox for another year.

He has been a regular in the side in the 2021/22 campaign, making 10 appearances in the Premiership and four in the Europa League to date.

Dream deal for Rangers

Irrespective of what happens to him next summer, he has been a fantastic servant for Rangers, and the club sealed a dream deal when they brought him in from Southampton in 2019. They paid nothing for him as a free agent, after taking him on loan for six months initially, to hand him a second spell at Ibrox after spending four years in Glasgow earlier in his career.

Despite joining in his mid-30s, he has been superb for the Gers and an integral part of the squad over the last three-and-a-half years. He has racked up 129 appearances in that time, taking his total for the club to 330 in all competitions across both spells.

Earlier this year, former Gers boss Steven Gerrard claimed that the midfielder ’embodies professionalism’ and hailed him as a role model.

The 41-year-old said: “Steven embodies professionalism and continues to set the standards required to be a Rangers player. He has been instrumental this year, playing a key role in our league success. Steven is low-maintenance and has much more to give our team, not only for the rest of this season but beyond.

“He is a role model to his team mates and continues to strive to be a better version of himself. I am very pleased to have a player with Premier League and international experience on board as we look towards next season.”

Last season, he averaged a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.06 across 35 appearances in Rangers’ title-winning season, showing his class on a regular basis. This proved that he was still able to play week in, week out and perform consistently to a high level despite his age, which is why signing him on a free transfer was a dream deal for the club.

They have been able to get well over 100 appearances and an important contribution to a title-winning season out of a player who they signed for nothing whilst he was in his 30s. Not bad business at all…

AND in other news, Van Bronckhorst aims to complete big off-field Ibrox deal which will surely have Rangers fans buzzing…
