ECB considers cutting Championship fixtures

The ECB is considering a number of changes to the county season to allow it to bid for the 2010 Champions League

Cricinfo staff01-Jul-2009As the Twenty20 juggernaut rumbles on, a report in the Daily Telegraph claims that the ECB is considering cutting the number of County Championship matches to accommodate the Champions League, which will take place in September 2010.A proposal by Alan Fordham, the ECB’s head of cricket operations, includes several schemes such as reducing the number of Championship games from 16 to 12, and possibly splitting the tournament into three divisions. At the heart of the idea is the realisation that squeezing in two Twenty20 competitions from 2010 will mean an increasingly punishing schedule for county players. The ECB is also, so the article claims, interested in hosting the Champions League which would overshadow the traditional end to the season.”I’m aware this is under consideration,” Durham chief executive, David Harker, told Cricinfo. “We are torn between the current situation which from our point of view is about having enough time between games. This season we have had a number of horrendous journeys the length of the country and the schedule like that concerns me.”However, we are aware that reducing Championship matches can eat into the supporter base and there’s no easy answer.”A consultation paper was circulated to counties over the weekend, but it will face a hard time getting approval from chairmen as it will be mean a reduction in the number of matches available for their members to watch, as well quite possibly producing a far more complex schedule. In a bid to appease these concerns, the ECB might be willing to introduce yet another late-season domestic competition.A final decision is expected at the full ECB board meeting on July 29.

The perfect format for Bangladesh

It is in Twenty20 that Bangladesh are the most dangerous – just ask West Indies – because they have aggressive players best equipped to deliver in bursts

It is in Twenty20 that Bangladesh are the most dangerous – just ask West Indies – because they have aggressive players best equipped to deliver in bursts. A nine-ball 21 or a 22-ball 47 can be devastating in this format, and that’s one of the strengths of this side.Their biggest test beyond the pool stage is how they hold their nerve. The volatile nature of the batsmen means that if they don’t belt the cover off the ball at the start, they are unsure over how to approach a run-chase. Often it comes down to a pair of batsmen to resurrect the innings and that’s where the uncertainty between attacking or nursing the strike can seriously hamper Bangladesh.Overall Bangladesh’s statistics aren’t impressive. They’ve only played ten Twenty20 games, winning three, but they’ve competed in most every game. Their most famous win came against West Indies in the 2007 edition of this tournament, when their most trigger-happy batsmen, Mohammad Ashraful and Aftab Ahmed, knocked West Indies out in a vicious manner. The selectors have again invested in youth and Bangladesh are easily the best of the non-seeded sides and should make the final eight, given that Ireland are far less experienced. Perhaps more than winning this tournament, the selectors have looked at players who can bring results for the future. They have included two teenagers in the squad – a brave move – and the hope will be that a young outfit expresses itself at the highest level. It would be foolish to write them off.Strengths
In a game that demands athleticism and daring batting, Bangladesh have talented players. Rarely inclined to pace their innings, Tamim Iqbal and Ashraful can decimate bowling attacks. Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim have learnt to adjust their game to pressure situations, and as a unit Bangladesh’s top order has the capacity to render attacks helpless with slogs, whips, hooks and drag-flicks. The left-arm spin attack of Abdur Razzak and Shakib Al Hasan can stem the runs in the middle overs, while Naeem Islam and Mahmudullah offer handy slow-bowling options.Weaknesses
The batting can too often be hotheaded and the pace bowlers – the outstandingly talented Mashrafe Mortaza included – have a tendency to lose it in the face of adversity. In one warm-up against Australia Tamim and Junaid Siddique thumped Nathan Bracken and Brett Lee in their opening overs only to capitulate later. The pace attack is inexperienced so Mortaza will once more be expected to lead. If he cannot – and it’s very difficult to come back from a bad over in Twenty20 – that puts far too much pressure on the slow bowlers.X-Factor
One of the surprising omissions from the IPL auction, Shakib Al Hasan is a player suited to this format because he can rebuild and outright attack. Plus he’s an excellent left-arm spinner and handy fielder. Shakib has the ability to make the difference between an average score and a good one in this format.Key player
Tamim Iqbal’s audacious half-century against India in the 2007 World Cup displayed talent and nerve and is one of the most famous innings by a Bangladesh batsman. He’s yet to cross fifty in international Twenty20s yet possesses enough talent to disturb new-ball attacks, as Australia found out in Nottingham this week. Tamim’s got all the shots in the book but unfortunately for Bangladesh, just hasn’t been able to display them for an extended period in this format. This summer could be a turning point in his career.Twenty20 form guide
Out of cricket for a while, and not helped by the fact that Pakistan’s tour was cancelled, Bangladesh could find themselves rusty going into the tournament. They’ve won only one of their last six Twenty20s, though their last defeat against South Africa wasn’t by a big margin at all.Squad: Mohammad Ashraful (capt), Abdur Razzak, Junaid Siddique, Mahmudullah, Mashrafe Mortaza, Mithun Ali, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Naeem Islam, Raqibul Hasan, Rubel Hossain, Shahadat Hossain, Shamsur Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Syed Rasel, Tamim Iqbal.

Batsmen stand up as SA rise

AB de Villiers said South Africa’s batsmen had “a few hard one-on-ones” after failing to match the bowlers’ efforts at the start of the one-day series

Firdose Moonda16-Nov-20130:00

‘There’s still work to do’ – Russell Domingo

Legend has it that after Australia piled on 434 runs against South Africa at the Wanderers in March 2006, Jacques Kallis tried to lighten the mood with a joke at the dinner break. “Well,” he said, “now that the bowlers have done their job, I guess it’s up to the batsmen to do theirs.”There are contrasting reports about who laughed and who growled in response but it’s an observation that rung true for South Africa’s line-up on their trip to the UAE. After the first two ODIs, in which they bowled Pakistan out for 182 and 209, the bowlers, sans Dale Steyn, were doing their job just fine. The batsmen had been shot out for 183 and 143 and were not doing theirs. With Gary Kirsten as their consultant they had “a few hard one-on-ones”, as AB de Villiers put it, to lay bare what was going wrong and what they needed to do to fix it.”We realised we were in trouble as a batting unit. And a few heads were going to roll if we didn’t get it right,” de Villiers said at the team’s arrival in Johannesburg on Saturday. “We decided to put our hands up and get a couple of good innings as a batting group. It was about taking responsibility and changing our mental approach. We were not playing up to standard and we had to force ourselves to believe we were good enough.”Instead of focus on anything technical – South Africa were playing Pakistan’s spinners a lot better than they had Sri Lanka’s in August – they needed a change in the way they were thinking. As soon as the switch flipped, improvement were clear. In the next match, South Africa posted their first total over 250 since June’s Champions Trophy and they had two individual half-centuries, one from a struggling Faf du Plessis, who finally found form. Having gone 11 ODI innings without raising his bat, du Plessis was starting to feel the heat. “It was tough to go through all that. It was a different experience for me and one I took a bit personally,” he admitted. “But I learned a lot and I started feeling better with the batting. It was just time. I knew runs were around the corner.”In the game that followed, South Africa recorded their first century of the tour, when young Quinton de Kock made good on the promise he showed at domestic level. After looking particularly susceptible to turning tracks and slow bowling in Sri Lanka, de Kock had taken it on himself to train even harder with his franchise coach Geoff Toyana. His technique is tighter and his talent came through.South Africa’s bowlers set the standard for their batsmen to match in their tour of the UAE•AFP

He has now claimed a spot in South Africa’s limited-overs teams, which will give the selectors an interesting conundrum at the top of the order in ODIs, when Graeme Smith returns to fitness, and in T20s, with Henry Davids also pushing for a place.”Everybody knows Quinton is a seriously talented player,” Domingo said. “He obviously had issues in Sri Lanka against spinners, where he was getting his left leg too far across the crease. But he’s worked on that. I am very impressed with his work ethic. Some people may perceive him as wild young thing but he has got a good work ethic.”In the final game, de Villiers scored a hundred that can be used as a prototype for pacing an innings. His measured start gave him the perfect launchpad to accelerate later on. South Africa won all three of those matches and showed their 50-over cricket is back on track. “The Test side’s success at number one may have caused the one-day side to get less love and less attention. We are trying to rectify that,” Domingo said. “The whole group have all stepped up and put in big performances.”Because they did it throughout the series, the bowlers got very little mention but it was through them that South Africa took a lead in the Twenty20 rubber. After their destructive showing in the first match, in which they restricted Pakistan to 98 for 9, Mohammad Hafeez’s men struggled to come back, even two days later when they collapsed again. With a range of quicks to choose from, South Africa’s T20 plans for next year’s WorldT20 are going well. The only thing they may hope for is a more competitive showing from Pakistan in the immediate return series, which begins on Wednesday. Even if they don’t get it, Domingo said South Africa will concentrate on climbing the ladder and building their own self-belief.”Confidence is a massively important thing and so you can never take things for granted,” he said. “We know Pakistan will be hurting and we expect them to come fighting. We are still a work in progress.” That they have progressed so far will leave Kallis, who could return for the ODIs against Pakistan, pleased because the batsmen are doing their job too.

A pair of fifties from the two Daniels – Flynn and Harris – ensured Northern Districts had enough runs to keep Otago at bay, as they opened their HRV Cup campaign with a nine-run victory in Dunedin. Northern Districts batted first, with the openers Brad Wilson and Flynn putting on 49.After Wilson was removed for 27, Flynn was joined by Harris, and the pair had a 69-run partnership. Flynn finally fell for 57 off 48 balls, which included three sixes and fours. Scott Styris chipped in with 14, but the rest of the lower order failed to add anything significant. Harris finished on 68 when he was run out by Neil Broom off the penultimate ball of the innings. Northern Districts reached 183 for 6.Otago, playing their first HRV Cup match since winning the tournament last year, got off to a belter as Broom and Jesse Ryder put on 65. Both openers fell by the 10th over, as Otago looked to build a strong platform to mount a chase of a competitive score. Aaron Redmond, coming in at No. 3, played an integral innings of 50 not out off 31 balls, as he and Ryan ten Doeschate combined for 76 runs for the third wicket. When ten Doeschate departed with the score on 147 for 3, Otago still required 37 runs off the final nine balls. Some inspired hitting from Redmond was not enough to close the gap, and Otago fell short by just nine runs. The match between Canterbury and Otago in Dunedin on November 8 was abandoned without a ball bowled on account of heavy rain on the morning of the match.

Prior misses final day with finger injury

Matt Prior didn’t take the field on the final day against West Indies at Chester-le-Street due to the finger injury he picked up on the fourth afternoon. Although x-rays cleared him of any fracture to his right ring finger, the medical advice was that he shouldn’t keep wicket. In his absence, Paul Collingwood continued as emergency wicketkeeper on his home ground. However, it was later confirmed that no cover would be called in for the one-day series which starts at Headingley on Thursday and Andrew Strauss said that keeping Prior off the field had been purely precautionary.Collingwood certainly didn’t disgrace himself with the gloves on the fourth evening and was desperate to claim his first catch as a keeper. Twice there were huge appeals turned down for edges off Chris Gayle and he only let through one set of byes.”I though he kept fantastically well,” Stuart Broad said at the close of the fourth day’s play. “He looked as though he should have been in the 1950s with his pads on loose and his cap on straight. I thought he was going to get a screamer of a catch at one stage down the leg side, he was sprawling everywhere. I think he’s fairly pleased with his efforts.”Prior didn’t emerge with the team after the tea interval on Sunday having suffered the blow shortly before the break while trying to stop a delivery from Tim Bresnan that bounced in front of him. He needed a couple of minutes of treatment before seeing out the middle session, but he was clearly in pain and it was decided during the break that a trip to hospital was in order.Ravi Bopara was also absent from the field on the fifth morning of the match, after suffering swelling on his knee from a blow sustained on the fourth evening. But, he too, isn’t a concern ahead of the first ODI.
