Big pictureTwo days before the second ODI, Sri Lanka’s new coach Paul Farbrace said Thisara Perera would not have to rescue the team again in the near future. In one short sentence, Farbrace backed his batting line-up, which had slipped to 67 for 8 in the first ODI.Bangladesh can be sure too that Sri Lanka will not give them two golden opportunities in the same game again. Once Mushfiqur Rahim did not prevent the visitors’ recovery, Perera and Sachithra Senanayake helped Sri Lanka reach 180. Bangladesh, however, were 114 for 2 inside 20 overs to the delight of the crowd, but lost eight wickets for 53 runs. Clumsy running and poor shot selection made them go 0-1 down in the series.Bangladesh will want senior players like Mushfiqur and Shakib Al Hasan to take more batting responsibility, particularly if Tamim Iqbal continues to remain sidelined with a neck strain. The top half of Sri Lanka’s order also has much work to do to find form ahead of the Asia Cup.Victory in Mirpur will complete Sri Lanka’s set of trophies in all formats on this tour; Bangladesh will be desperate to keep their only chance of silverware alive.

Watch out for

Shamsur Rahman impressed during his 62 in the first ODI. He played an array of back-foot shots – square drives, square cuts, an upper cut and a swivel pull – to score his second fifty. His needless run-out, however, started the Bangladesh collapse so there should a little more care to his innings in the second game.Angelo Mathews called the first ODI victory a dream come true. He didn’t bat like a dream but claimed three wickets with his medium pace. He was steady, and ensured Sri Lanka remained disciplined with the ball and in the field. Mathews will be expected to make more all-round contributions.

Team news

Mashrafe Mortaza and Tamim Iqbal have still not recovered from their injuries, so their selection will be last-minute decisions. Al-Amin Hossain could make way for Mashrafe while Mahmudullah’s two-ball duck will be counted against him. Naeem Islam stands a chance to get into the playing XI.Bangladesh (possible) 1 Shamsur Rahman, 2 Anamul Haque (wk), 3 Mominul Haque, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Nasir Hossain, 7 Mahmudullah/Naeem Islam, 8 Sohag Gazi, 9 Arafat Sunny, 10 Al-Amin Hossain/Mashrafe Mortaza, 11 Rubel HossainSri Lanka will be forced to make one change to their eleven from the first ODI after Nuwan Kulasekara was rueld out with a groin injury two days ahead of the second game. The batting line-up requires another shot at the Bangladesh attack before anyone is jettisoned.Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Ashan Priyanjan, 6 Kithuruwan Vithanage, 7 Angelo Mathews (capt), 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Suranga Lakmal, 10 Sachithra Senanayake, 11 Lasith Malinga.

Pitch and conditions

Overnight rain and overcast conditions spiced up the Mirpur pitch a little, but it has been dry and sunny in the region since the first ODI. The surface is likely to be slow and low.

Stats and trivia

Naeem Islam was Bangladesh’s highest scorer in their previous ODI series – 163 runs at 54.33 against New Zealand – but he was not selected for the first ODI against Sri Lanka. Thisara Perera’s unbeaten 80 was the third highest score at No. 9 in ODIs, after Andre Russell’s 92 and Darren Sammy’s 84.

Quotes

“I don’t think Bangladesh lack belief. It is just about winning a close game. It is amazing how your team flies from there. They will be off and running from there.”
Sri Lanka coach Paul Farbrace

Fast bowler Hamish Bennett has been chosen as a replacement in New Zealand’s ODI squad for the injured Adam Milne for the remainder of the five-match series against India. According to a New Zealand Cricket (NZC) release, an MRI scan revealed a torn abdominal muscle which will sideline Milne for approximately six weeks.Milne sustained the injury during New Zealand’s 24-run win in the first ODI at Napier. He finished with figures of 1 for 40 in 7.3 overs before leaving the field midway through the 41st over with what appeared to be a side strain.Bennett, 26, has played one Test and 12 ODIs for New Zealand and will join the squad at training in Hamilton on Tuesday ahead of the second ODI on Wednesday. His last appearance for New Zealand came in the 2011 World Cup, when he took 0 for 16 in 4.1 overs in a 112-run loss to Sri Lanka at Mumbai.During the 2013-14 New Zealand domestic season, Bennett is the leading wicket-taker in the Plunket Shield with 24 scalps at 23.12 in five matches for Canterbury, who currently sit in first place in the first-class competition.

Bari reveals plans for international cricket in Pakistan

The former Pakistan wicketkeeper indicated that holding a series against arch-rivals India at a neutral venue, inviting a team of international players for a one-off Twenty20 game were among the various options he was exploring

Cricinfo staff08-Sep-2009

‘What we need to do is to break the ice.’•AFP

Wasim Bari, the new PCB chief operating officer, has said Pakistan could see some international cricket within the next six months, which could herald a return to normalcy. He revealed a host of options he is pursuing to revive international cricket in Pakistan, including staging a series against arch-rivals India at a neutral venue, inviting a team of international players for a one-off Twenty20 game and having Sri Lanka visit Pakistan for a couple of Twenty20 internationals.”It’s certainly possible to have one or two international matches in Pakistan within the next six months,” Bari told the . “Once that happens, I’m sure that things will return to normal for Pakistan cricket.”What we need to do is to break the ice. We desperately want to stage international games and will work on several options to ensure that it happens sooner than later. It’s very important for our cricket to have regular matches against India. There is also this proposal of inviting a team like Sri Lanka for a couple of Twenty20 matches in Karachi.”Pakistan went off the radar as cricket hosts last March following the Lahore attacks when the visiting Sri Lankan cricketers were ambushed by unidentified gunmen on their way to the Gaddafi Stadium. Five cricketers, including Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, were injured in the attack that also killed six security men and two civiliansSoon after, the ICC decided to switch Pakistan’s share of 14 matches in the 2011 World Cup from the country because of security issues, leading experts to fear that international cricket might not return to Pakistan for the next several years.Bari, 61, a former Pakistan captain, who replaced Saleem Altaf as PCB COO, remained optimistic given the ICC’s assurance that it would provide complete support for the return of international cricket to Pakistan. “The ICC is very supportive and recently told us the security situation in Pakistan was improving, and that is certainly a good sign for us,” Bari said. “It is a slow process but we will look into all these opportunities for the betterment of Pakistan cricket.”He said he and other senior PCB officialswould also keep in touch with the security authorities in a bid to ensure that the game makes a swift return. “It is very important to keep constant liaison with the government officials because they are the main stakeholders,” Bari said.

Lehmann made playing for Australia fun again – Watson

Shane Watson, a vocal critic of Mickey Arthur’s ‘high-performance’ dressing-room culture, feels vindicated by Australia’s success under Darren Lehmann’s relaxed stewardship

Daniel Brettig06-Jan-20140:00

‘Special feeling for everyone involved’ – Watson

Like a politician brought back from the cold due to change at the top, Shane Watson is no longer an anguished voice in the Australian wilderness. The most ardent in-house critic of the national team’s former direction, Watson has added reason to feel satisfied about Australia’s Ashes rampage this summer. They have come a long way since the fractious days of less than a year ago, when Watson and three others were suspended for a Test match in India as relationships with the former coach Mickey Arthur broke down. The day after Australia completed a barely believable 5-0 sweep of England in the second of back-to-back Ashes series, Watson spoke of how Darren Lehmann had returned a sense of fun and balance to a dressing room that had become insular, intense and often unpleasant during the latter days of Arthur’s tenure.Shane Watson was seldom part of such scenes of camaraderie under Australia’s previous coach Mickey Arthur•Getty Images

Watson did not enjoy the “high performance” direction the team culture had taken, and was not shy about saying so. As a result of this frankness, his relationship with the captain Michael Clarke suffered, and he was also stood down from the vice-captaincy. But Lehmann’s appointment – and the wise medical counsel of the team doctor Peter Brukner – has allowed Watson to rehabilitate, as the team around him gathered strength in England before rumbling to the most comprehensive series triumph imaginable in Australia.”Personally it makes it more sweet,” Watson said. “To know that there were times when I knew I had to stand strong with my beliefs only for the betterment of what I thought was the amazing talent we had in the group. I certainly would never take back how I stood and voiced my opinions at certain times. I know that when there are down times, if you stand strong for long enough and persevere for long enough things might turn around and they certainly have in a way that I never expected.”I’ve always had certain beliefs and I’ve been lucky enough to be around so many great teams, whether it was the Australian team or other teams that I’ve played in. I got to know most importantly that you need to be making sure you’re having a lot of fun because it’s a game that if you take too seriously – and I do at times, and I’ve always got to turn myself around – you can really get too internal and the game gets too much for you. That’s what was happening in the Australian team.”Reflecting on the team room of 12 months ago, Watson said the concept of having fun and enjoying the game had been forsaken in pursuing goals that seemingly became less attainable the harder the team aspired to them. Lehmann reduced the tension in the air, while at the same time encouraging his players to be themselves. By adding perspective to the team, Watson said Lehmann had helped make the quest for the Ashes a challenge to be enjoyed rather than an all-consuming struggle to be endured.Largely thanks to Lehmann,Watson said the reality of playing cricket for Australia now matches up to the dream of doing so. “That it was meant to be the time of your life had gone out the window,” Watson said. “It was more so you had to be desperate and put every other part of your life on hold to become the best player and best team in the world instead of just getting the perfect balance, which means you’re more chance of actually putting the performances on the board as a team and individually. And Darren knew that from experience and that’s exactly what he implemented.”I know how lucky I am to be involved in such a special environment because it doesn’t always come along.”It’s not just something you stumble across, it’s something that people do put a lot of time and effort in certain ways to be able to make sure that an environment like this is created and that’s the amazing skill that Darren Lehmann has brought in. It really is an absolute pleasure to be a part of, not just the dream of playing cricket for Australia, but to actually be involved in something that is so much fun, that’s the reason I started playing and why I’m playing now.”

Shillingford, Samuels face nervous Test

Shane Shillingford and Marlon Samuels face the prospect of finding out whether their bowling actions have failed testing while they are in the middle of a Test match

Shane Shillingford and Marlon Samuels face the prospect of finding out whether their bowling actions have failed testing while they are in the middle of a Test match. The deadline for the report into their actions passes midway through the Wellington Test against New Zealand starting on Wednesday and West Indies are waiting to see how the ICC will handle a potentially delicate situation. The offspinners were tested in Perth on November 29, meaning that the 14-day period for confirmation of the findings being passed to the ICC will end on the third day of the test. The results become official when the ICC releases them via a press release so it is within their control exactly when the information is made public.Ottis Gibson, the West Indies coach, does not believe it is in anyone’s interest to reveal the results while the players are in the middle, particularly if they are not favourable for either, and hopes to know the outcome either before the match starts or in the days leading up to the final Test in Hamilton.”I’ve not heard anything from the ICC. Since we’ve done the testing we’ve left it to them,” Gibson said. “They have to digest the report then give us the results. Everything else we do is just focus on cricket.”The ICC, I suppose, would have an idea of what the findings might say now. The Test starts on Wednesday, it would seem to me if nothing is said before then that they would wait until afterwards. I don’t think it would be fair for them or us to issue the results in the middle of the game. If anything is going to happen I’d prefer if it happened before the game started.”Shillingford reduced New Zealand to 44 for 4 in their second innings in Dunedin and received praise from his captain, Darren Sammy, for how he had handled himself.”I didn’t expect anything different from Shillingford,” Sammy said. “We’ve been good mates, we’ve been playing for the same first-class team in the past decade and I know that he’s a very strong minded individual. He’s been through things like that before.”Shillingford had his doosra examined during the testing and Samuels his quicker ball after they were reported following the second Test against India in Mumbai. Both players have previously been banned from bowling, Samuels in 2008 and Shillingford following his Test debut in November 2010.
