Evans drops AVFC claim on Phillips

Since Aston Villa’s current owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris took over the Midlands club back in 2018, they have not been reluctant in spending money on bringing new players to Villa Park that can help the team fulfil their ambitions of taking the club into the upper echelons of football.

With this in mind, Villa journalist Gregg Evans has dropped a clue regarding one player that has been mentioned with a move to the Midlands club in the past that could push them closer to being an elite club competing for European football.

What’s the news?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Evans had this to say about Villa’s interest in Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

He said: “Yes they like him, there’s no denying that. Whether there’s even a one per cent chance of getting him is another matter.”

Break their transfer record

As a product of Leeds’ youth academy, Phillips has gone on to make a total of 226 appearances for the Yorkshire club, showing how important he is to the team and why they would presumably want to keep hold of him for as long as possible.

Having ended the previous Premier League season as one of Leeds’ highest-rated players according to WhoScored with an overall performance rating of 7.01/10, it would place him fourth among Villa’s highest-rated players.

Thus, it’s easy to see why the Midlands club have an admiration for the England international and why Villa fans would surely be overjoyed to see him at their club.

As well as being an important figure for Leeds, Phillips has made himself a significant player on the international stage as well. For instance, he was one of the five outfield players that started all seven of England’s Euro 2020 games last summer.

While the likelihood of Phillips eventually making the move to Villa Park is yet to be determined, the Villa fans should be excited by the fact that their club has an interest in Phillips and have a previous record of being very active in the transfer market, like they have been this month with the arrivals of Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne.

Looking ahead to the future, with the £60m valued midfielder’s current contract at Elland Road not set to expire until the summer of 2024, it could be a challenge for Villa to secure his signature anytime soon.

It may also be very expensive, potentially causing them to breach their transfer record fee of £33m that they paid for Emi Buendia last summer. Villa haven’t been afraid to splash out of late with the likes of Digne, Ollie Watkins, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings costing north of £25m.

With previous claims suggesting that Gerrard would want to sign a defensive midfielder this month, if they don’t manage to sign one this month, this could increase their need to make a move for Phillips next summer.

Considering his quality, they must do all they can to lure him to the Midlands, including smashing their transfer record.

In-form Will Gidman and Benny Howell took two wickets apiece as Gloucestershire enjoyed much the better of a rain-affected first day against Derbyshire.Play did not start until after lunch but visiting Gloucestershire made the most of the 71 overs that were available as they reduced Derbyshire to 166 for 6. Most of Derbyshire’s batsmen made starts but none managed to really push on, with opener Paul Borrington top-scoring with 42 and captain Wayne Madsen contributing 33 before both fell with the score on 78.Allrounder Scott Elstone, fresh from penning a two-year contract extension with the county, was unbeaten on 36 at the close but it was in the main a day dominated by the ball after Gloucestershire had won the toss and opted to field. The Westcountry side are missing three key pacemen through injury but in Will Gidman they have a bowler in fine form and he needed just six deliveries to make the breakthrough as he sent back Stephen Moore for 1, caught by his brother Alex at first slip.Gidman, who claimed a seven-wicket haul in Gloucestershire’s 290-run win over Kent last time out, also sent back the dangerous Madsen – caught by former England wicketkeeper Geraint Jones on his debut after joining on loan from Kent. That came soon after Borrington had been run out attempting a third run as Division Two’s bottom side Derbyshire slumped to 78 for 3.Borrington’s departure ended a promising 77-run stand with his skipper and brought Marcus North – brought in to cover for Shivnarine Chanderpaul – to the wicket for his first Championship appearance for the county since 2006.North, the veteran Australian, was in scintillating form during his first short stint with Derbyshire, scoring 465 runs at an average of 93, but he could only make 11 here before he shouldered arms to Howell and saw his stumps shattered. Howell also struck next, having Alex Hughes caught by James Fuller at midwicket for 16 to make it 123 for 5.Derbyshire wicketkeeper Gareth Cross sought to launch a counterattack but, after hitting Tom Smith for a straight six, he was trapped lbw by Fuller having struck the bowler for successive boundaries off his previous two balls. That proved to be the final wicket of the day for Gloucestershire, although they almost snared Elstone before the close as well with the diving Jones unable to take the chance to give Elstone a late reprieve.

Cook confirms groove with second ton

Were it not for an England captain registering a second consecutive hundred, there would have been little to cheer as Essex and Surrey played out an inevitable draw

An inevitable draw to what could have been a compelling encounter came to pass at The Oval. Were it not for an England captain registering a second consecutive hundred, having been battered from pillar to post in the winter and since, there would have been little to cheer but the afternoon sunshine and pre-rush hour finish.Alastair Cook’s was an entertaining century – 127 coming off 202 balls in more than four hours at the crease – not least because it gave us an indication of what kind of form he was in. His biggest tell is the drive; out of nick, he seems almost allergic to it. Here, he was getting his nose to the ball, breathing it in before thrashing it to the boundary. “To me, it indicates I’ve got good balance,” he said afterwards.Another comfort for Cook was the ECB announcement confirming Paul Farbrace’s role as England’s new assistant coach. Cook, who was coached by Farbrace at England age-group level, is currently satisfied with his own game. Work away from the limelight has benefitted him greatly.”The most important thing for me personally is I’ve gone back to hitting the ball nicely,” he said. “I had a good month-and-a-half away from playing in the public eye, working in the nets with Paul Grayson.”You never turn a corner as such but to get two hundreds at the start of the season, especially in April, is pleasing. I’m genuinely quite chuffed with how things have gone in the past few weeks.”Cook will meet Peter Moores and, presumably, Farbrace on Friday, before Essex’s game against Gloucestershire. That might be his last county appearance for a while, with an England training camp being planned for the first week of May, ahead of the ODI with Scotland on May 9, which clashes with Essex’s game at Leicestershire. He looked relieved – a word he corrected himself from using – even taking time to talk shop with young Surrey opener Dom Sibley. Elbows were raised, in the batting, not the football sense, as they discussed technique and Sibley hung on every word. At the end, they shook hands and Cook wished Sibley good luck. Whatever you think of his leadership, Cook has his moments of excelling as a statesman.Essex made light work of finishing off Surrey’s first innings in the morning. While Jason Roy was able to take 14 off David Masters’ second over of the day, a sharp over from Mills saw Chris Tremlett’s stumps splattered and Jade Dernbach caught on the off side, going for a wild hack to leg. Graham Napier’s first ball was full and straight to trap Roy in front and, with Zahar Ansari not batting, Essex took a lead of 69 into the second innings. While Jaik Mickleburgh took some time to get used to the pace of the pitch, which was also displaying some variable bounce, Cook was in his element. He was troubled once by a ball that died a touch and hit him in front but the vociferous appeals were turned down; it looked to have pitched outside leg stump.Everything else that strayed on to his pads was dispatched accordingly. Full balls were defended or driven; balls there to cut were, well, you know the rest. Matt Dunn was unable to get the better of him this time around, but the young Surrey quick had his sixth victim of the match when Mickleburgh, who had started to look settled, edged behind. That the afternoon resembled square practice to Cook is no fault of the home attack. Assistance off the pitch declined with each over and the England captain was more committed with his footwork than at any point. In the 44th over, he hit Dernbach through extra cover and signed off the shot with an outlandish flourish that had his bat finishing parallel to his back.It was a cathartic moment, a release through flamboyancy – a trait he is not associated with. He was almost apologetic after, playing out the rest of the over in dot balls, before returning to manoeuvring the ball from his back-foot base. A guide behind point, follow by a cut in front of it took him to 96, before a procession of singles, culminating in a squirt into the leg side, got him to three figures. Those that remained in the ground awoke 20 minutes before the close when Dom Sibley let out a dull shriek for his maiden first-class wicket, as Ravi Bopara attempted to guide a ball on off stump down to third man, but missed. If both had the opportunity to do it all again, you hope they would decline.

Taylor, Dottin star in tense WI win

West Indies Women relied on performances from their two star players – Stafanie Taylor and Deandra Dottin – to make a winning start to their Women’s World T20 campaign, beating England Women by nine runs.Chasing West Indies’ modest target of 134, England were comfortable at 63 for 2, their start powered by their captain Charlotte Edwards. However Dottin, who had failed with the bat earlier in the match, struck in each of her four overs, to break the back of England’s middle order. Her pace bowling accounted for Natalie Sciver, Tammy Beaumont, Edwards and Jenny Gunn as she finished with career-best figures of 4 for 12.England needed 18 runs off the final over but two wickets, including Anya Shrubsole’s run-out, negated any possibility of a surprise win.Earlier, West Indies had been restricted to 133 for 7 despite a brisk start from openers Kycia Knight and Taylor. The pair added 87 runs in 12.3 overs but Knight’s wicket sparked off a slide that soon had West Indies struggling at 116 for 5, in spite of Taylor’s 45-ball 56. Sciver took 3 for 18 in her three overs, while Shrubsole picked up 2 for 25.
