Breakers break with tradition in Colvin capture

England’s Holly Colvin is set to make history as the first overseas player for New South Wales women

Cricinfo staff30-Jun-2008England’s Holly Colvin is set to make history as the first overseas player for New South Wales women. Colvin will further bolster the dominant Breakers side and her spin partnership with Lisa Sthalekar has been described by coach Richard Bates as “exciting”. Bates used to be Colvin’s coach for England so he is well aware of her capabilities.”It is very exciting to have Holly onboard for the 2008-09 summer,” said Bates. “I believe we now have two of the best spin bowlers in women’s international cricket in our squad.Clare Connor, head of women’s cricket at the ECB, added: “In terms of World Cup preparation, there could be no better opportunity for Holly than joining the New South Wales Breakers squad. She will have daily access to every component of the NSW programme including their strength and conditioning coaches, spin bowling expertise, nutrition advice, and physio support should she need it.”Breakers’ break from tradition comes as part of a reciprocal deal between Cricket Australia and the ECB. This year, overseas players have been allowed in the Super Fours competition for the first time, with Australia’s Alex Blackwell and Leah Poulton taking advantage of the arrangement. The pair are also playing county cricket.Jenny Gunn will head to Western Australia from South Australia in the winter. She has been playing club cricket in Sydney and flying across to Adelaide for state matches. If she continues to play in New South Wales she will face flying even further for Western Fury’s home matches.

A utilização desses atletas futuramente será a válvula propulsora do reestabelecimento institucional e esportivo do clube.

William Thomas”

Surrey's eyes turn to the big prize

After a seismic six months, in which Twenty20 cricket has taken over as the driving force of the world game, the 2008 tournament could quite possibly turn out to be the most important competition in England this summer

And to think the format started out as a gimmick. When Surrey won the inaugural Twenty20 Cup in the summer of 2003, they did so as reigning County Champions, and though they enjoyed their big day out at Trent Bridge, there was no question that the four-day format was their over-riding priority. Now, however, things are not so clear-cut. After a seismic six months, in which Twenty20 cricket has taken over as the driving force of the world game, the 2008 tournament could quite possibly turn out to be the most important competition in England this summer. That was already set to be the case, but now that the £2.5 million Champions League has been dangled in front of the counties’ eyes, the stakes have got even higher. “I know it’s going to change the whole landscape of how people look at Twenty20 cricket, and indeed the way we react to it,” Surrey’s chief executive, Paul Sheldon, told Cricinfo. “I just hope very much it doesn’t change the variety of cricket and the whole issue of County Championship and Test cricket that the ECB have rightly set out to protect.”On Sunday, the ECB moved quickly to buttress the pre-eminence of England’s Test team – and appease those players whose Twenty20 opportunities have been limited by international appearances – by announcing a £2 million performance-related bonus pool. But to judge by the reactions of the Surrey players who gathered at The Oval on Monday for the launch of their 2008 campaign, it’s going to be hard to halt the momentum of the newest form of the game.”I think it’s fantastic and it’s what cricketers need,” said the former England Test batsman, Usman Afzaal, who joined Surrey from Northamptonshire at the end of 2007. “We’re a sport that gives a hell of a lot, for six months we work from eight in the morning to seven in the evening, and it’s great to see cricketers getting the recognition they are deserving. That’s what the entertainment business does to you. If you start filling seats you have a serious business, and it’s nice to see that cricket is starting to do that.”Afzaal has been a professional cricketer since his Nottinghamshire debut in 1995, and his attitude to Twenty20 cricket has moved with the times. “When it first started I also thought it was a bit of fun, but the most important thing was all the kids around the grounds,” he said. “It was like carnival cricket for three weeks, but then when we went back to the 40 and 50-over games, and the crowds vanished. It was clear we had hit on something special, so it’s nice to see we are now being recognised as entertainers.”For the players at the beginning of their careers, the possibilities currently seem endless. “It is scary yet exciting at the same time,” said Jade Dernbach, who – at the age of 22 – has just been awarded a three-year extension to his Surrey contract. “Just think where cricket might be in four or five years’ time. This is a shop window for everything that’s out there, so all I’m looking to do is do as well as possible. If I do well for Surrey it opens a lot of doors.”At Whitgift School last week, Dernbach broke into Surrey’s Championship side for the first time this season, although it is his limited-overs form that earned him his new contract. For all the determination of the ECB to preserve the pre-eminence of first-class cricket, Dernbach speaks for a new breed of cricketer who sense a shifting of priorities.”There is a very real possibility of that,” said Dernbach, when asked if Twenty20 cricket would eclipse the four-day game. “It’s a massive competition now, with all the publicity around it, and I think everything is just being geared around Twenty20. When you see the amount of money going into it, the danger is the kids of 12 or 13 years old, when they go to the nets are they going to practice technique, or are they going to see how far they want to hit the ball? I think through the younger levels, there needs to be an understanding that four-day cricket is the top of the game. We mustn’t lose sight of that.”All of which adds up to something of a headache for Surrey’s director of cricket, Alan Butcher, whose task it is to weigh up the competing priorities in this most seismic of seasons. “Twenty20 cricket has taken off incredibly after the initial scepticism in the first year,” said Butcher. “The players like it, the public like it and the finance people certainly like it. It’s been the flavour of the last six months, and it’s very apparent it’s not going to go away.”Butcher’s problems have been exacerbated by the row over the participation of ICL players, which could force Surrey to make do without the services of their star spinner, Saqlain Mushtaq. But, he insisted, such political issues would be as far as possible from his squad’s thoughts. “The danger is that people will start looking for the pot of gold before they’ve spotted the rainbow,” said Butcher. “We’ve got to pick the best side to win each game and then we see what happens. You can think as far ahead as you like, but if you don’t win those initial games, you aren’t going to get to the Champions League.”

Sunderland: Black Cats eye Tony Gallacher

Sunderland are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool defender Tony Gallacher, according to The Liverpool Echo.

What’s the story?

Gallacher has been with the Premier League side since 2018, having previously played for Scottish side Falkirk earlier in his senior career.

The left-back has made only one appearance for the Liverpool first-team, which came in their Carabao Cup match against Aston Villa.

Gallacher spent part of last year’s campaign on loan with MLS Side Toronto, where he went on to make ten appearances in total for the club, before returning to Anfield.

But his return is set to be short-lived, with it being claimed that Gallacher is set to depart the club this summer, with Liverpool keen on a permanent exit for the 22-year-old.

That same report claims that Gallacher is one of a number of the club’s academy players to be heading for the exit door this summer, as they prepare for the upcoming 2021/22 campaign.

Sunderland are believed to have made enquiries into a potential loan deal, although a permanent switch isn’t being ruled out at this stage of the negotiations.

He’ll have a point to prove

Sunderland could certainly benefit from adding additional depth to their defensive options this summer, as Lee Johnson looks to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion into the Championship once again.

The Black Cats were beaten by Lincoln City in their League One play-off semi-final last term, in what was a frustrating end to the 2020/21 season.

Dion Sanderson was ruled out of action towards the end of that campaign, and with Callum McFadzean leaving the club when his contract expired in the summer, it leaves Johnson with a lack of depth in defence, which will be concerning heading towards the new league campaign.

Therefore it makes sense for the club to target a deal for Gallacher, who will be eager to make a name for himself in senior football in England.

Tom Flanagan and Denver Hume are the current options at left-back, and you would imagine that Gallacher’s potential arrival at the Stadium of Light would push Flanagan further down the pecking order in Johnson’s plans.

We’ve not been able to see much of the left-back since he moved to Liverpool, as he’s only made one senior appearance for the Reds, but he’ll fancy his chances of performing to a high standard with a Sunderland team that are keen on a return to the Championship this term.

At the age of 21, he’s got plenty of room to further his development in senior football though, and a move to Sunderland could be the ideal move for the defender this summer.

The Sunderland supporters are likely to like the sound of this potential agreement to sign Gallacher, as additional competition for places in a team that are likely to be challenging for promotion is the ideal scenario, with all the players attempting to perform to the highest possible standard.

Leeds in talks to sign Lewis O’Brien

Leeds United are reportedly in talks with Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien over a move to Elland Road this summer.

The Lowdown: O’Brien impresses for Huddersfield

O’Brien has caught the eye for the Terriers in recent times, standing out in the middle of the park last season.

The 22-year-old started 39 of his side’s 46 Championship matches, chipping in with three goals and three assists from midfield for good measure.

The Latest: Leeds source drops news

According to Football Insider, Leeds are keen on signing O’Brien as an alternative to Conor Gallagher, who has moved to Crystal Palace on loan.

A Leeds source told the outlet that ‘preliminary discussions’ have taken place over a move for the youngster, who has a total of 80 Championship appearances to his name already.

O’Brien is out of contract at Huddersfield next summer, so they may be willing to accept a fee for him this year, in order to avoid losing him for nothing next term.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-11/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Interesting signing

While O’Brien admittedly has no Premier League experience to date, it is exciting to see Marcelo Bielsa, Victor Orta and co taking a liking to a second-tier player – let’s not forget that most of Bielsa’s current squad are the same group who performed so admirably in the Championship.

The Leeds boss may feel that the Huddersfield man is someone who can bring quality, energy and squad depth to his squad based on his showings last term.

O’Brien averaged an impressive two tackles per game in the Championship last season, highlighting his off-the-ball work and showing that he could be an able deputy to Kalvin Phillips.

To put that number into context, Phillips was the only Leeds midfielder to register more tackles per game at Elland Road last season, so O’Brien would definitely add some bite through the spine of the team.

In other news, a pundit has talked up the idea of one hugely promising player joining Leeds. Find out who it is here.

Palmer believes Leon Bailey is a good signing for Villa

Former Premier League star Carlton Palmer believes that Leon Bailey will be a good signing for Aston Villa.

Bailey completed a £30m move to Villa Park this week from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen and became Dean Smith’s third summer signing after Emiliano Buendia signed from Norwich City for £38m, and Ashley Young returned to the club on a free transfer from Inter Milan.

The 23-year-old, who can operate from either wing, featured 40 times for Leverkusen last season in all competitions and was in fine form, scoring 15 goals and providing a further eleven.

On Villa’s newest recruit, Palmer told FFC: “It will be a good signing, he’s a good player.”

Bailey has signed a contract with Villa until 2025 and manager Dean Smith is excited to have signed him, telling Aston Villa club media: “Leon is a hugely exciting young striker with great pace and creativity. He has enjoyed a successful career at Leverkusen, and we are now looking forward to watching him show his skills and talents for Aston Villa in the Premier League.”

Aston Villa weren’t the only Premier League side interested in Bailey, as both Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with a move for the attacker in the past, and also Bailey was touted as being a potential target for Ligue One side Paris Saint-Germain, according to Goal.

With Dean Smith adding further quality to his side this summer, everybody connected with Aston Villa will be hoping for another successful season in the Premier League this season and try to improve on last season’s 11th-placed finish.
