Hugo comentou.

– É difícil falar num momento desse. Um momento quando estávamos tão bem. Não recuamos mesmo com o resultado. Sempre buscamos a vitória. Temos que levantar a cabeça. Pedir desculpa a torcida. Nunca vi em 12 anos de base o estádio cheio assim. Em cinco minutos, tomamos dois gols que não podíamos. Eu estava prestando atenção no banco.

LFC fans react to key Mbappe update

Some Liverpool supporters are excited after a report claimed Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe is wanted by one English club.

The Reds have gone under the radar in the summer transfer window, doing very little business while many of their rivals spend big.

Liverpool’s only arrival is Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, although they have continually been linked with an audacious move for Mbappe.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

The 22-year-old is one of the most exciting players in world football at the moment, scoring 133 goals in just 174 appearances for PSG.

Mbappe’s current deal at the Ligue 1 club expires next summer, however, so he could move on imminently, ensuring they receive a huge fee for him.

According to RMC Sport [via Anfield Edition on Twitter], an unnamed Premier League club is in contact with the France international over a move, as well as Real Madrid.

McCarthy form is proving Hasenhuttl wrong

Ralph Hasenhuttl made it clear during the summer that Southampton would stick with Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster as his goalkeepers this season, but the former’s performances thus far suggest that this was the wrong call.

The Austrian manager confirmed earlier in the summer, when Southampton were being linked with a move for various goalkeepers, that McCarthy and Forster would remain as his main options in between the sticks this season after they rotated on a regular basis in the 2020/21 campaign.

Despite the regular changes in goal, Southampton still conceded 68 goals in the top-flight, which was the second-most of any side, which suggests that getting a new goalkeeper might have been a good idea.

Given that Southampton were expected to concede just 58.55 goals according to Understat, fingers must be pointed at the goalkeepers, who certainly underperformed for the Saints in the second half of the campaign.

Strangely, it has been reported that Southampton will be in the market for a long-term option in goal next summer, which is hardly going to do Hasenhuttl’s current options’ confidence any good.

Considering the way McCarthy – whose manager called him ‘fantastic’ not so long ago – has started the new season, you could already argue that the Austrian manager has made a mistake in not pursuing a new goalkeeper for this season.

The former QPR man was slow to come off his line for Richarlison’s equaliser against Everton in the opening day, before being beaten to the ball by Dominic Calvert-Lewin for the Blues’ third.

He also looked anxious against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon and flapped at a number of crosses, before eventually being beaten by one of the visitors’ first real attempts on goal, a tame shot from Mason Greenwood that squirmed under the ‘keeper, despite it being hit straight at him with very little power.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

Therefore, it is already time to give Forster an opportunity to start in goal, which Hasenhuttl may well do against Newport County in midweek, but in reality, a new goalkeeper should’ve been brought in this summer.

Mental strength as important as talent – Srikkanth

Kris Srikkanth has said his long-term goal was to pick the best team possible for the 2011 World Cup, while his immediate priority was to choose the best side against Australia

Cricinfo staff28-Sep-2008Focus on junior cricket MP Pandove, the new BCCI treasurer, has said “sprucing up the infrastructure in rural areas” was high on his list of priorities. “Schools and universities have given us some great cricketers in the past and we surely need to breathe back some life into them,” Pandove was quoted as saying in .Former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth, who was appointed the new chairman of selectors on Saturday, has said his long-term goal was to identify the best team possible for the 2011 World Cup, while his immediate priority was to choose the best side for the series against Australia. The series against Australia gets underway on October 9 in Bangalore and follows a 2-1 defeat in Sri Lanka where several senior members of the Test squad struggled for form. Srikkanth, however, said that the “mental strength” of the seniors would be critical against Australia.”S Badrinath, Rohit Sharma and a few others have the talent but it is not ability alone that makes a player tick at the highest level,” Srikkanth told . “Mental strength is critical and cannot be taught, it has to be within, and the likes of Sachin [Tendulkar], Rahul [Dravid] and Anil [Kumble] have shown the way over a good period of time. It will be important to groom the youngsters under them.”An eye for the future is equally important. Hard decisions might have to be taken in the future. The current Test team is one of the best India has ever had and it will not be easy replacing them.”The previous selection committee, headed by Dilip Vengsarkar, picked different squads for the Test and ODI formats, a policy which Srikkanth said was “spot on” because it required “different skill sets to excel in each form”.”With Twenty20 also coming into the mix it is crucial to identify talent for each form and nurture them,” Srikkanth said. “The team has had some good results in the recent past and it’s important to keep the good work going.”I thank the BCCI for having faith in me and I am sure this new committee will meet the high expectations,” Srikkanth said. “As a selector my accountability is even greater and I will strive hard and ensure the best Indian team takes field in every single game.”

Romano drops big Arsenal transfer claim

Fabrizio Romano has dropped an exciting Arsenal transfer claim which will leave fans buzzing.

What’s the story?

Mikel Arteta’s side endured a nightmare start to the Premier League season on Friday night as they lost 2-0 to newly-promoted Brentford.

However, Romano has now delivered a transfer update which should raise optimism levels at the Emirates Stadium.

Writing on Twitter, the journalist revealed: “Arsenal are prepared to make a bid to sign Martin Ødegaard on a permanent deal. He’s always been Edu and Arteta’s priority as number 10. #AFC Once Real Madrid gives the green light, Arsenal will submit the proposal. Aouar, also in the list. Maddison, never been close.”

In a follow-up tweet, he added: “Martin Ødegaard would love to re-join Arsenal. He was really happy during his loan spell last season and he’s waiting for Arsenal bid to be accepted by Real Madrid, once the green light arrives. #AFC Ødegaard has a great relationship with Arteta and board members too.”

Fans will be buzzing

While some Arsenal fans may have been enamoured by potentially signing Leicester City star James Maddison, bringing in Odegaard would be a significant step to ensuring they strengthen their creative options in the number ten position.

As per WhoScored, despite only coming in on loan in the January transfer window from Real Madrid, Odegaard averaged 1.4 key passes per game in the Premier League, which was the joint-highest of any Arsenal player.

Emile Smith Rowe was left to carry the Gunners on his back against the Bees on Friday night, and it was all too clear that the young starlet desperately needs support.

It’s exactly why Romano’s claim that Arsenal are now prepared to make an official bid to sign Odegaard, and that crucially, the Norway international is very much keen on a move to the Emirates, will likely leave the club’s fans buzzing.

Meanwhile, David Ornstein dropped an Arsenal update on Lautaro Martinez…

The big pictureEngland’s upward one-day curve hit a blip at Bristol on Saturday, with New Zealand triumphing by 22 runs to level the series at 1-1. The joy, or relief, with which the tourists celebrated showed how difficult the last few weeks had been and, as they approach the fourth ODI at The Oval, the momentum is with them. Grant Elliott, the allrounder who was playing for Weybridge in the Surrey Championship a week ago, has surprised everyone with his composure at international level, and his 56 at Bristol hoisted New Zealand from the depths of 75 for 6 to a challenging (and ultimately match-winning) 182. Kyle Mills and Tim Southee also found form, but for England, it was their complacency with the bat which cost them. Going into the first of the two London matches, they have two selection dilemmas to ponder. Alastair Cook, whose shoulder injury ruled him out of the first three ODIs, could return at the top of the order at the expense of Ian Bell, who injured his knee during a warm-up. Meanwhile Ryan Sidebottom has recovered from a stiff back and could return at the expense of James Anderson.Form guideEngland LNWLT (most recent first)
New Zealand WNLWTWatch out forRyan Sidebottom His natural aggression and competitiveness will be to the fore if, as expected, he earns a recall to bolster England’s seam attack. Now recovered from a stiff back which ruled him out of the second and third matches, he will be looking to continue the dominance he has had over New Zealand’s batsmen in recent months. England urgently need him firing on all cylinders if they are to combat New Zealand’s growing confidence.Grant Elliott Paul Collingwood spoke of his admiration for Elliott after the Bristol ODI, claiming he and his team-mates were well aware of his credentials. Even he, however, must have been surprised at Elliott’s allround contribution in the series as his 3 for 23 at Edgbaston was followed by a fine, calm fifty in Bristol to lift New Zealand’s total to 182. Lively in the field, he has quickly become a vital cog in all facets of the game for Daniel Vettori.Team newsBell tweaked his knee during a warm-up at The Oval and it could prompt a return for Cook, who himself has recovered from his shoulder injury. Sidebottom, too, should return – possibly at the expense of Anderson whose performance at Bristol was mercurially indifferent.England (possible) 1 Luke Wright, 2 Ian Bell, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Ravi Bopara, 5 Paul Collingwood (capt), 6 Owais Shah, 7 Tim Ambrose (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Ryan Sidebottom, 11 Chris Tremlett.Jacob Oram has declared himself fit and raring to go, having fully recovered from the side strain which ruled him out of the first three matches, providing New Zealand considerable strength and much-needed balance. Grant Elliott, the South African born New Zealand allrounder, responds to his fine start to his one-day international career.”We’re very disappointed we didn’t take an opportunity here. We had the opportunity to be pretty ruthless and go 2-0 up and we kept losing wickets.”
Paul Collingwood rues his side meek performance in Bristol.

Lancashire labour to Rayner and Lewry

A round-up from the first day of the latest Championship matches

Cricinfo staff06-Aug-2008Division OneLancashire laboured to 206 all out on the first day against Sussex at Old Trafford, yet this represented an useful comeback after the hosts floundered at 90 for 5. Jason Lewry did the early damage: Lou Vincent dragged one on for nought while Iain Sutcliffe was also bowled by a cracking delivery which held its line on off stump. Stuart Law hung around for 52 balls for his 9 before edging a good-length delivery from Luke Wright to the wicketkeeper. However, Lancashire weren’t done just yet and fought back impressively through Steven Croft (46 from 87) and Francois du Plessis who put on 59 for the fifth wicket. Ollie Rayner removed du Plessis and Croft fell 10 overs later, smartly held by Chris Adams at first slip, but Luke Sutton (45*) and Dominic Cork at least ensured Lancashire reached the lofty heights of 200, with a patient stand of 53. Rayner mopped up the tail with 5 for 65, his third five-wicket haul, and Sussex were 9 without loss at stumps.England’s one-Test wonder, Darren Pattinson, ran through Somerset with 5 for 40 on the first day of their match against Nottinghamshire at Taunton, traditionally a batting paradise. In reply, however, Nottinghamshire had lost six wickets of their own but had gained a vital first-innings lead of 79. Nottinghamshire made crucial early inroads, with Charlie Shreck trapping Justin Langer leg-before while Pattinson picked up Marcus Trescothick’s wicket. When Ian Blackwell fell for 1, Somerset had fallen to 25 for 5, prompting a salvaging act from their lower-order. Craig Kieswetter began proceedings with a brisk 18, while Steffan Jones stroked 27 from 45. Somerset were blown away for 106 in 39.1 overs. Yet Nottinghamshire struggled too, as Andy Caddick removed Matthew Wood for a duck, but Bilal Shafayat (25) and Mark Wagh (46) steadied their reply with a stand of 65. Samit Patel stood out for the visitors, celebrating his call-up to England’s one-day squad, with a fine 56 from 80 balls as Nottinghamshire went to stumps with a lead of 79, though with only four first-innings wickets remaining.Sixteen wickets tumbled at Taunton and another 15 crashed at Chester-le-Street between Durham and Kent, as the visitors closed on 43 for 5 in reply to 146. Durham trail the Division One leaders, Nottinghamshire, by 10 points but have a match in hand, and they began solidly today with an opening stand of 58 between Michael di Venuto and Mark Stoneman. Ryan McLaren struggled in his opening spell, so the onus fell on Robbie Joseph to make the breakthrough, removing the openers, before Amjad Khan put Durham onto the back foot with the wickets of Shivnarine Chanderpaul (edging to second slip) and Dale Benkenstein (inside edge onto his stumps) in quick succession. Liam Plunkett led a brief revival with a punchy 21 from 39, but Martin Saggers found immense swing to clean up a brittle tail with 4 for 26, the hosts skittled for just 146. Kent suffered the same difficulties as Durham, losing Rob Key (4), Joe Denly (21) and Neil Dexter (1) with 26 on the board. When Mark Davies picked up his third wicket, that of the nightwatchman Saggers, Kent were limping on 43 for 5 and trail by 103 going into the second day.Jacques Rudolph rescued Yorkshire with a solid 83 on the first day against Hampshire at The Rose Bowl. Rain delayed the start by two hours and, when play got underway, Chris Tremlett’s snorting fifth delivery removed Andrew Gale while Anthony McGrath was struck plumb in front. Chris Taylor didn’t last long, edging James Tomlinson – who swung the ball prodigiously – to a diving Nic Pothas, while Adam Lyth drove a limp return catch to Dimitri Mascarenhas. However, at 82 for 4, Yorkshire’s South African dug deep to salvage the innings while his team-mates came and went in a procession. Cautious and steady throughout, he was nevertheless alert to scoring opportunities and stroked 12 fours. Crucially, he found support in David Wainwright whose 65-ball 18 might have lacked fluency but at least provided solidity. At stumps Rudolph, who was dropped on 78, was unbeaten on 83.Division TwoGraeme Hick crashed his 136th first-class hundred to lead a dominant Worcestershire performance on the first day against Derbyshire at New Road. Hick, who turned 42 in May, made 149 from just 151 balls – his highest score for two years – and shared in partnerships of 184 with Ben Smith (76) and 123 with Steve Davies (71) during Worcestershire’s 450 for 8 declared. They raced along in the first session, smacking 118 runs in boundaries alone, as Vikram Solanki became the first to notch 1000 Championship runs in the season. Derbyshire’s bowlers leaked 45 extras in a disappointing display, with seven no-balls from Graham Wagg, and Dan Birch should have held Hick at midwicket on 74. Hick was relentless before he fell to a rare loose shot, lofting to Charl Langeveldt at long-off.A fine 104 from Marcus North put Gloucestershire in a good position on the opening day against Leicestershire at Cheltenham. No play was possible in the first session and Leicestershire were soon in business when William Porterfield, who returned from Ireland duty, nudged a leg-side delivery behind to Paul Nixon. And though Kabir Ali looked in excellent touch, he edged Dillon du Preez to Boeta Dippenaar at second slip to leave Gloucestershire tottering. However, North bristled with confidence – particularly against Claude Henderson – and found a useful ally in Hamish Marshall, with whom he put on 167 in 46 overs. North ought to have been held on 52 when Joshua Cobb fluffed a running catch at mid-off and, in spite of reaching the nineties three times this summer, he finally notched three figures from 142 balls. It was his first ton for 14 months, and the relief told when he slapped one straight to mid-off. Marshall, who made a patient 70, also fell to Jim Allenby but Gloucestershire – who are still seeking their first Championship win of the season – are reasonably placed at 256 for 5.A superb, rearguard 103 from Jamie Dalrymple hoisted Glamorgan out of the depths against his former county, Middlesex, on the opening day at Colwyn Bay. Glamorgan were put in and soon slipped to 53 for 5 as Middlesex’s seamers took advantage of helpful bowling conditions. Tim Murtagh had Richard Grant edging behind while David Hemp was held neatly at third slip by Ed Joyce off the impressively disciplined Alan Richardson. When Tom Maynard offered no shot to Danny Evans, Glamorgan were 53 for 5 and going nowhere. Enter Dalrymple. He put on 56 with Mark Wallace and, after another rain delay, a further 66 with Dean Cosker (39 from 62) to irritate Middlesex. Nurturing the tail brilliantly, he put on 145 for the last three wickets to notch his first hundred in three years as Glamorgan went to stumps on 258 for 9.
