Australia bounced back strongly from the defeat in their opening match against New Zealand and scored a comprehensive win against South Africa in New Castle. The stars of the victory were Karen Rolton and Shelley Nitschke who scored brisk half-centuries to lead the hosts to a formidable 258. Nitschke damaged South Africa with the ball as well, taking 3 for 43 as South Africa were dismissed for 197. South Africa have lost both their matches and are virtually out of the running for the Super Six.Australia’s openers Nitschke and Alex Blackwell gave their team a solid start after Rolton won the toss. They added 75 in 20.3 overs before Blackwell was bowled by Alicia Smith, the first of her three wickets. However, it was the second-wicket partnership of 82 between Rolton and Nitschke that turned the match in Australia’s favour. They increased the run-rate during the stand and by the time Nitschke was dismissed for 87 off 94 balls, Australia were scoring at nearly five runs per over. Rolton carried on, hitting 13 fours during her 96 off 87 balls. Rolton looked certain to reach her hundred in the final over – and become the most prolific century-maker in women’s cricket – but couldn’t get enough strike.”We got off to a bit of a slow start and I would have liked a few more runs early on but to the South African girls’ credit they bowled well,” Rolton said. “It’s tough when you don’t play a team for four years. We haven’t played South Africa since the last World Cup in 2005 and even then it was only once.”It was good to middle a few when I came out to bat. We’ve been working hard to try and get some partnerships going and some people batting through and making runs because we haven’t been able to do that.”The target was a formidable one and South Africa’s innings never gained the necessary momentum. Trisha Chetty held the innings together with a half-century but she received little support from her team-mates. South Africa fell away after Cri-zelda Brits and Mignon du Preez scored 36 and 37 respectively. Nitschke’s three wickets jolted the middle order and the last six batsmen failed to reach double figures.”It was a good fight for the girls and I thought South Africa batted well,” Rolton said. “I’m a little bit disappointed with the way we bowled and that’s something we can work on before our next match against West Indies.”

Foot injury to keep Lee out for a month

Brett Lee’s troublesome left foot has prevented him from trying to justify his importance to Australia’s team on the third day in Melbourne

Australia will almost certainly enter the series finale in Sydney next week with a vastly inexperienced attack after learning Brett Lee faces a month out of the game due to a foot injury. Lee has been out of form and was unable to improve his series figures of 1 for 200 when the problem kept him off the ground for the entire third day against South Africa at the MCG.Lee has what the team physio Alex Kountouris described as a stress reaction – “on the way to being a stress fracture” – in the fourth metatarsal in his left foot. While there is a chance Lee could bowl in the second innings, it could take as little as one ball to turn the small crack into a stress fracture and a four- to six-week layoff is probably required either way.”I don’t think he’ll be able to play the Sydney Test,” Kountouris said. “We’ll wait and reassess at the end of the game but if he’s got what we think he’s got and it’s been confirmed by scans that he’s got a stress fracture, it’ll probably mean we’re going to have to rest him for a period of time to let it settle. We’ll probably get a specialist opinion but it will be something between four and six weeks I think.”That would rule Lee out of Australia’s ODIs against South Africa and New Zealand and would mean a potential return in the Test series in South Africa that begins in late February.Kountouris said the injury was caused by overuse and was not uncommon in fast bowlers. Lee has also had problems with his left ankle and has had four operations on the joint, the most recent of which kept him out of last year’s World Cup.Lee’s lack of penetration has been a concern against South Africa and he leaked 68 runs from 13 overs as the pain increased throughout the second day at the MCG. Losing him for the Sydney Test would take the heat off the selectors to justify his inclusion but it would also leave Mitchell Johnson in charge of a young attack. Michael Clarke, the vice-captain, said a lack of Test experience in the bowling group would not be a major worry.”I think I look at it the other way,” Clarke said. “I remember when I got my opportunity to play Test cricket, it’s a great feeling and you really look forward to that day and I think whoever – if somebody does come in for Brett Lee – I know they’ll be looking forward to that opportunity and hopefully they can get hold of it with both hands.”Peter Siddle and Nathan Hauritz are each in their third Test and the candidates to replace Lee include the uncapped Ben Hilfenhaus, who joined the squad after the WACA loss. The Sydney local Doug Bollinger will also come into the equation, as will Shane Watson, who filled in as 12th man while Lee rested in Melbourne.

Moyes confirms West Ham boost vs Zagreb

West Ham United boss David Moyes has confirmed a huge boost ahead of tonight’s Europa League group stage opener…

What’s the latest?

The Irons are about to embark on a historic campaign as they will be making their debut at this stage of the competition and they will do so with a fully fit squad at the 58-year-old’s disposal.

Speaking ahead of kickoff, via the club’s official website, the Scot said:

“We’ve got no injuries; we have everybody fit and available.

“I’ll look at it because we have a busy programme, but overall everybody is fit and available and we’re really looking forward to it. We’re pleased to be on the road, and I think we’re all excited about being here.

“We’ve got a lot of people who we can make changes with, but we’re also trying to make sure that we choose and pick [teams] the right way if we can, and get the selection correct.”

Huge boost

Considering the injury troubles that Moyes and the squad had to deal with last season, this is massively encouraging news and could be crucial in the long run as the starting XI will need to be rotated regularly in the coming months.

The Hammers will be playing two games per week for the foreseeable future and it’s unreasonable to expect the same line-up to feature in every match.

For example, the east Londoners remain unbeaten in the Premier League and face table-topping Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, so Moyes will surely have one eye on that game, whilst also wanting to get off to the perfect start in Europe.

He must find the right balance and after some shrewd acquisitions during the summer transfer window, he does now appear to be well-equipped right across the pitch, barring up front where it still is only Michail Antonio.

The 31-year-old is likely to get a run-out this evening as he’ll be suspended for the visit of the Red Devils at the weekend, so that’s another boost in itself as Moyes will be able to call upon his in-form talisman.

“Mich might’ve been someone we’d have considered leaving out, but I think with the situation being the way it is at the moment, I don’t think we’ll do that,” the boss revealed.

The travelling West Ham faithful should be absolutely buzzing with this news as it means they’ll get to witness a full-strength side go to battle in a European group stage for the very first time in their history.

Towards the back end of last season, Moyes lost players like Antonio, Declan Rice and Aaron Cresswell to injury, so to have them all fit and available is certainly a huge boost to their chances of delivering the goods in Croatia.

AND in other news, Forget Benrahma: Moyes must unleash “first-class” West Ham gem, could be game-changing…

Miandad aims to revive association cricket

Pakistan’s domestic cricket is likely to undergo yet more structural changes, with the emphasis moving once again back from regions to departments and private organisations

Pakistan’s domestic cricket is likely to undergo yet more structural changes, with the emphasis moving once again back from regions to departments and private organisations. Javed Miandad, the PCB’s director general, has said more private companies and MNCs will be given affiliation by the board to raise first-class teams, in a bid to replicate the domestic formula that Pakistan’s national side prospered from in the 70s and 80s.”MNCs and banks will have an open invitation from the board to raise good teams and take part in our first-class cricket,” Miandad told Cricinfo. “They will be encouraged to raise Under-19 teams, put in development schemes and so on.”Pakistan’s first-class structure, in recent years, has been centred around regional cricket. The previous two administrations of Shaharyar Khan and Nasim Ashraf were both keen proponents of regional-based cricket and departments and banks, in their scheme of things, were to be slowly sidelined. This is a vision favoured by, among others, Imran Khan. But others, including Miandad, Rashid Latif and Sarfraz Nawaz, have long argued that given Pakistan’s relatively poor economic health, organisations such as Habib Bank and PIA are crucial for cricket, because they offer a livelihood to poor, uneducated but talented cricketers. This season’s structure, Miandad said, will remain the same and the changes will only come after the plan has been vetted and approved by the various stakeholders: as such there is not set timeline for when these changes will occur.”This is like going back to Abdul Hafeez Kardar’s original plan for domestic cricket,” Miandad said, referring to the first captain of Pakistan and one of its most influential board heads, who first invited institutions to play domestically in the early 70s. “That vision served Pakistan well and between 1983 and 1996 in particular, when we had this set-up, Pakistan really prospered,” Miandad said.Region-based teams, such as Karachi and Lahore, or Sind and Punjab (in the Pentangular), will not, however, be sidelined completely. Instead, they will be given greater autonomy to run their own affairs, a decentralisation in a sense of the administration of cricket in the country. One charge against previous board administrations has been that they have controlled regional associations far too much and become embroiled in their politics.”We are saying to regional associations, take control of your cricket and handle your affairs and run it. Karachi, Lahore they should all take more responsibility and run cricket,” Miandad said. “Recently, the board has been giving them money – which is fine – but regions have taken it and not done as much with it as possible. These associations need to find players, bring them up from the grassroots and hand them to Pakistan cricket. The PCB will help you but you have to do the work yourself.”The plan, Miandad said, needs time. “We had two set-ups before this which tried regional cricket and it hasn’t really worked. We have to look at this and we need time.”

Symonds and Watson create selection poser

Australia should consider playing both Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson in the first Test against New Zealand, according to the former captain Steve Waugh

Australia should consider playing both Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson in the first Test against New Zealand, according to the former captain Steve Waugh. The idea has also won qualified support from Michael Hussey, who believes Watson can do the job as the third fast bowler provided he does not have to send down so many overs that his injury-prone body is in danger of breaking down.Symonds has been Australia’s regular Test No. 6 in the past couple of years and Watson took on the role during the recent tour of India. Both men have been named in the 13-man squad for the Gabba Test, which starts on Thursday, and Waugh said it should not be assumed that one of them would miss out.”It’s a difficult choice,” Waugh told the . “But Watson did very well [in India] and he might come in as a third quick. I think Australia would like to have both those players in the team if they can.”Symonds has struggled for batting form at first-class level but in his first match back in Australian colours, in the Twenty20 game against the All-Stars on Friday, he struck 45 from 35 balls. Ricky Ponting, Australia’s captain, believes Symonds is one of those players who lift at the highest level.”It is the same with a lot of those really talented players,” Ponting said. “Michael Clarke is a good example of that, his average is probably low 40s at state level and mid 40s, 45 at Test level.”He’s like Gilly [Adam Gilchrist], if he gets in and gets going a Test match can change very, very quickly. You almost need that sort of player in that one to six role, he’s good at batting with the tail, you know he can clear the fence in that situation and keep the scoreboard ticking over.”But if Symonds does regain his No. 6 position it creates a question for the selectors on whether to include Watson as well, and if so, who misses out. Jason Krejza would be desperately unlucky to be dropped after taking 12 wickets on debut and Stuart Clark, although he did not play in Nagpur, would be a valuable member of the attack at the Gabba.Using Watson as the third seamer and batting him at No. 7 would be a bold move but his bowling form in India was impressive and he was Australia’s third leading wicket taker with ten victims. But Watson is enjoying a rare injury-free year after his past few seasons have been constantly interrupted by fitness concerns, particularly hamstring problems, and Hussey hopes Watson is not asked to compromise his body with too great a workload.”His bowling is very under-rated, he’s always had good pace,” Hussey told . “In the last Test he got 4 for 40 in the second innings on a pretty flat wicket where he swung the ball.”I think he could do a pretty good job in that role. What he’s been through in the last couple of years though you wouldn’t want him bowling 30-odd overs in a match, you’d rather him bowling 15-20.”The selectors will release one member from the 13-man group on Tuesday and the final makeup of the side might not be decided until the morning of the match. Clarke and Brett Lee, both of whom lost significant weight in India due to viruses, are expected to be fit for Thursday’s Test.
