Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa, in what would be a controversial move given his past connections in north London.

The Lowdown: Martinez earns Messi praise

The 29-year-old’s career has gone from strength to strength since leaving Spurs’ bitter rivals Arsenal, with the Gunners seemingly happy to allow him to leave.

Martinez has shone between the sticks for Villa and most prominently Argentina, proving to be the penalty shootout hero in their Copa America semi-final triumph over Colombia in the summer.

Lionel Messi called his compatriot ‘one of the best goalkeepers in the world’, following their eventual win in the competition, while he was even nominated for the Yashin trophy, such has been his incredible form at Villa Park.

The Latest: Spurs keen on move

According to The Independent, Spurs are eyeing up a move for Martinez next summer as a replacement for the ageing Hugo Lloris, in what is described as a ‘spectacularly divisive transfer’.

The Argentine’s current Villa deal doesn’t expire in the summer of 2024, however, and a deal could be ‘very difficult to negotiate’ – he is valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt.

Alex Remiro (Real Sociedad), Alex Remet (Napoli) and Sam Johnstone (West Brom) are also mentioned as possible targets if a deal for Martinez can’t be struck.

The Verdict: Get him in

Martinez could be a superb signing for Spurs if they managed to snap him up, no doubt infuriating some Arsenal fans as an added bonus.

With Lloris now approaching 35 years of age, a long-term replacement could be required and the Villa man fits the bill perfectly, boasting 15 clean sheets last season, the third-most in the top flight.

He is in and around his prime years and seems to be improving all the time for club and country, keeping three clean sheets in the league this season and even saving two penalties, although one of which Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored from the rebound.

وأردف: “كنا نتمنى أن نعمل بشكل أفضل من ذلك في ظل الإمكانيات المعدومة، الجميع تأثر بضغط المباريات والأندية الكبيرة شعرت بالمعاناة، ونحن عانينا بشكل أكبر بسبب عدم وجود الإمكانيات”.

وواصل: “الجميع في النادي يعلم جيدًا هبوط المقاصة ونعمل الآن على الاستعداد للمنافسة في الدرجة الثانية، نجتهد من أجل منح العناصر الشابة فرصة خلال الفترة المقبلة، ونمهد لهذا التصور منذ فترة كبيرة والمباريات المقبلة ستكون فرصة كبيرة للشباب القادرين على المشاركة في الموسم المقبل”.

وكشف: “الأهلي لا يلعب بالناشئين، اللاعب صاحب الـ22 عامًا لا يعتبر ناشئا، والمباراة الأخيرة شارك 9 لاعبين كبار وليس ناشئين، واليوم الزمالك لا يلعب بالناشئين، يجب أن يعلم الجميع بأن الناشئ يعتبر من سن 19 عامًا”.

وأردف: “نحترم النادي الأهلي وسنلعب بكل قوة في مباراة الكأس، وليس من العيب أن نلعب على ركلات الترجيح في اللقاء”.

وأتم: “الفرق الصغيرة تلعب جيدًا في بداية أي مباراة أمام أندية القمة، وللأسف عندما تتلقى هدف اللاعب يشعر بالإحباط في ظل عدم القدرة على العودة مرة أخرى، كان لدينا امل أن نخرج بالشوط الأول بالتعادل السلبي، ولكن الأخطاء منعت ذلك”.

واختتم: “تم انتقال هشام حافظ رسميًا إلى فريق فيوتشر، وفضلنا عدم مشاركته لعدم تعرضه للإصابة، نحن نحتاج أموال الصفقة نظرًا للظروف التي نمر بها”.

وكان فريق مصر المقاصة قد تأكد هبوطه لدوري الدرجة الثانية رسميًا بعد هزيمته اليوم أمام الزمالك.

Cricinfo staff08-Apr-2009Corrie van Zyl has been appointed as coach of the High Performance Centre based in Pretoria, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced today. van Zyl, 49, is currently head coach of the Eagles and has helped the franchise win six domestics titles (two each in the SuperSport Series, MTN Domestic Competition and Standard Bank Pro20).He was earlier cricket manager of the Free State Cricket Union and also had a five-year spell as assistant coach of the South African national team from 1998 to 2003. He was involved in two World Cups as well as 50 Test matches and more than 120 ODIs during that period. van Zyl also coached the South African Emerging Squad to victory in their series in Australia in 2006.As a player, he had tremendous success playing for Free State, taking 349 first-class wickets as a fast bowler and 127 wickets in List A matches. He was also part of the South African side which toured the West Indies in 1992-93, but achieved little success in the two ODIs he played.His duties at the High Performance Centre will include coaching the South Africa A and Emerging Squad teams, controlling the rehabilitation of national players coming back from injury, identifying and working with emerging talent coming through the franchise system and acting as the link between the national coach and the franchise coaches.van Zyl said he was delighted to take on the job. “I genuinely feel it is a great honour to get this job,” he said. “I have always felt there was a need for this line of communication between the national team and the franchises and I am confident of making a big contribution in this regard.”I have enjoyed my previous spells with Cricket South Africa and I am looking forward to being back on board. Andy Moles, the New Zealand coach, is optimistic of pulling off a win on Monday in Napier despite his side picking up only one wicket on the fourth day. India trail New Zealand by 62 runs, after following on, and still have eight wickets in hand, with Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir at the crease.Moles said a draw was the expected result but hoped that with some luck New Zealand would be able to get the breakthroughs needed to win the Test. “There is only team that can win this game and that is New Zealand,” Moles said. “It is not often that we have been in that position. We hope a little bit of luck goes our way tomorrow and we get the opportunity to push for the win that we deserve. It only takes a couple of good catches and a special spell by somebody.”Moles said his bowlers, who had bowled 200.5 successive overs, were sore but had no injuries. “Obviously, you get a bit tired when you make teams follow on. My message to the team is that we’ve got to get used to it. If we are going to become a good Test side it is about getting big scores and then making teams follow on.”This is an exceptionally good batting wicket and they [India] have got some great players who played well on it. If we can get our intensity right and hit the right areas we could turn it our way. All we are looking for is two or three mistakes and we will be into the Indian tail. Hernanes estreará pelo São Paulo neste sábado contra o Botafogo no Rio de Janeiro. E deve ser como titular. Como era esperado, Hernanes atuou muito avançado, colado no ataque. Ele já tinha dito que jogaria na meia, perto do gol. Foi também por isso que voltou da China. O Profeta se revezou com o peruano Cueva na armação das jogadas e aproximação a Lucas Pratto. O peruano, aliás, decidiu a atividade de titulares com reservas. Ele marcou os dois gols dos titulares na vitória por 2 a 1. Foram dois golaços. Gomez abriu o placar para os reservas.

Dorival escalou a seguinte formação no treino. Renan Ribeiro (Sidão), Bruno, Arboleda, Rodrigo Caio e Edimar; Jucilei, Petros e Hernanes; Marcinho, Cueva e Pratto. Vale destacar que a atividade foi feita com quatro gols e quatro goleiros. O ex-volante, que disputou a Copa do Mundo de 1970 e foi tricampeão do mundo pela Seleção Brasileira atuou como uma espécie de conselheiro de Thiago Maia desde que o jovem foi promovido da base santista.

Roraimense, Thiago chegou à base do Santos ainda garoto e nunca passou por outro clube. No profissional Thiago chegou com 18 anos.

No total, foram 125 jogos disputados com a camisa do Santos e quatro gols marcados.

Despite currently sitting in 12th place in the Premier League table with three wins and four defeats under their belt so far this season, Wolves boast a respectable defensive record with just six goals conceded in seven games, the same as Liverpool and Manchester United.

Even with this current defensive record, it seems as though Wolves boss is already eyeing up a potential move for a new defender to bring to Molineux.

What’s the latest?

It has recently been reported by Fichajes (via Sport Witness) that Wolves and fellow Premier League side West Ham United are interested in signing Athletic Bilbao defender Dani Vivian.

The 22-year-old, who has a release clause of €40m (£34m), has played in seven out of Bilbao’s eight La Liga games so far this season, conceding just two goals in the process.

Interestingly, the only La Liga game that Vivian did not play in is the only league match that Bilbao has lost so far this season in a 2-1 defeat against Rayo Vallecano.

Long-term option?

Vivian’s performances in La Liga have earned him an overall performance rating of 7/10 according to WhoScored, making him one of Bilbao’s highest-rated players so far this season.

Taking all of this into account, it’s easy to see why Wolves and West Ham would be interested in signing him.

He’s not a prolific header of the ball with just 0.9 aerial duels won per match but he is an efficient tackler, winning 1.6 challenges a game. That would rank him second out of Wolves’ centre-halves this term with only Max Kilman producing more.

That makes him an attractive signing but there is another reason too. In our view, given the age of current Wolves centre-backs Willy Boly (30) and Romain Saiss (31) we feel that Vivian could be a good option to replace one of the pair and be a useful long-term option for the Old Gold given the Spaniard’s young age.

Moving forward, if Wolves see an opportunity to sign Vivian in the upcoming January transfer window or the next summer window, this is definitely something the club should be looking to explore ahead of their fellow Premier League side West Ham.

Until then, Lage will have to make sure his side can start picking up wins in the league on a consistent basis and not concede too many goals. If they start leaking strikes they could be in danger of being in a relegation battle, rather than finishing in the top half of the table.
