ICC 'bars' TV channels from World Cup coverage

Coverage of the World Cup in the Indian electronic media has come under a cloud with the ICC on Monday barring non-rights-holding channels access to the remaining matches for alleged breach of its accreditation guidelines

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Mar-2011Coverage of the World Cup in the Indian electronic media has come under a cloud with the ICC on Monday barring non-rights-holding channels from access to the remaining matches for alleged breach of its accreditation rules and guidelines. The channels will be barred from practice sessions and the press conferences related to the three remaining matches, including Wednesday’s semi-final between India and Pakistan in Mohali, unless they sign a written undertaking that they will adhere to the ICC guidelines.”The channels have violated the terms and conditions of the accreditation agreement and news access guidelines they signed up to at the start of the tournament,” an ICC spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo. “Their accreditations have been deactivated.” It is believed that at least 40 leading channels will be affected.Apparently the ICC has repeatedly warned the channels of violations during the tournament and took the decision to bar them only after the guidelines continued to be breached. It is believed that the breaches have been of a commercial nature; there could be elements of ambush marketing involved with the channels running shows sponsored by companies that are in competition with the ICC sponsors.Meanwhile, the Broadcast Editors’ Association (BEA) and the National Broadcasters Association have decided to approach India’s Information & Broadcasting ministry on the matter. Shazi Zaman, the BEA president, has termed the ICC move as arbitrary and an infringement of media rights, according to .ESPN-StarSports has the broadcast rights for the World Cup. The first semi-final between Sri Lanka and New Zealand will be played in Colombo tomorrow while the final will be held in Mumbai on April 2.

Mashrafe Mortaza not in World Cup squad

Mashrafe Mortaza has lost his race to be fit for the World Cup after being left out of Bangladesh’s squad for the tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jan-2011

Mashrafe Mortaza isn’t in the team, Tamim Iqbal is the vice-captain•Bangladesh Cricket Board

Mashrafe Mortaza, the Bangladesh allrounder, has not been included in the 15-man squad for the World Cup. Mortaza had injured his right knee while playing club cricket in Dhaka in December and was striving to recover in time for the tournament. He had begun bowling off a short run-up during net sessions in the last few days but the selectors decided against including him in the campaign. Shakib Al Hasan was named captain of the squad and Tamim Iqbal will be his deputy.”There is little chance that Mortaza will be fit before the World Cup,” chief selector Rafiqul Alam told AFP, adding that coach Jamie Siddons supported this assessment. “Mortaza, however, has the chance to be included in the team later if he fully recovers and an opportunity arises.”Mortaza’s absence is a blow to Bangladesh but they have enjoyed a string of positive results under Shakib recently, including beating New Zealand 4-0 in October 2010 and Zimbabwe 3-1 in their most recent outing in December. The doubt over Mortaza’s selection was the only major question ahead of the announcement. And though his exclusion effectively means that Mortaza won’t be part of the World Cup, Siddons was optimistic. “He [Mortaza] is on track with his rehab. He was supposed to bowl today, bowl off a full run-up at the end of the month in eight to ten days,” Siddons had told the day before the squad was announced.”We definitely want him to be fit. If the selectors don’t pick him, and if he’s fit by the first match, we can use him as a replacement in the World Cup. There are a few good reasons for him to bowl. I expect him to be fit by the start of the World Cup. I want him in the team, I want a fit Mashrafe.”The Bangladesh physiotherapist, Michael Henry, had said Mortaza had “responded well and there were no negative repercussions after his bowling stint.”Mortaza described his exclusion “as the most painful day” of his life. “I was 100% confident of regaining my fitness,” Mortaza told reporters. “However, this is life and I am quite accustomed to it.”I respect their decision and you can say this is just bad luck.”Bangladesh will play the tournament opener against India in Dhaka on February 19 after which they play their remaining group games at home.Squad: Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Shahriar Nafees, Raqibul Hasan, Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim, Naeem Islam, Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Nazmul Hossain, Suhrawadi Shuvo.

Uncommonly tight contest looms

James Anderson believes that England have their noses slightly in front at the end of an eventful second day at Sydney

Andrew Miller at the SCG04-Jan-2011James Anderson believes that England have their noses slightly in front at the end of an eventful second day at Sydney, but Mitchell Johnson’s late dismissal of Kevin Pietersen for 36 has redressed the balance of a match that looks set to become one of the closest-fought contests in recent Ashes history.Despite the tightness of the scorelines in the past two campaigns in particular, England and Australia have developed a strange tendency to beat each other out of sight in recent years, with arguably the closest contest since the 2005 Ashes being Australia’s incredible six-wicket victory at Adelaide in 2006-07.Since the 5-0 whitewash in that series, England have won two Tests by an innings and two by more than 100 runs, but have themselves been overturned by an innings at Headingley in 2009 and by 267 runs at Perth last month. This match, however, looks capable of being a much closer contest, with Australia’s tail carrying them to a defendable first innings of 280, before England replied with 3 for 167 at the close.”It’s pretty even-Steven, maybe slightly in our favour,” said James Anderson, the pick of England’s attack with 4 for 66. “But it’s a real tough one to call. We’ve got a crucial morning session tomorrow to get through. If you look at the last couple of days, it has done a little bit first thing in the morning – with overhead conditions. We’ve got to really dig in tomorrow morning and hope to get up towards them and get a decent lead.”Prior to the fifth Test, the Sydney curator Tom Parker reckoned that his wicket was a typical bat-first SCG track, which would improve over the first two days before taking spin from day three onwards. However, the majority of the contest has been played under thick cloud cover, which has not made the ball swing especially prodigiously, but may well have delayed the deterioration of the surface for the spinners.”Who knows?” said Anderson. “There was a lot more grass than I’ve ever seen here at Sydney, so that might hold the wicket together a lot more and it might not turn as much as it usually does. But we’ll have to wait and see, we don’t know what the weather conditions will be [for the rest of the match].”Anderson’s first duty on day three will be with the bat, after he came out to join Alastair Cook late in the day, following Pietersen’s misjudged hook that picked out deep fine leg. “It was disappointing to see KP go like that but it’s just one of those things,” he said. “He likes to play his shots and nine times out of ten he’d hit that one for four.”My role is to bat as long as I possibly can,” he added. “If I can stick around and create a partnership with Cooky, even if I’m not scoring heavily I’ll still be frustrating the opposition and tiring their bowlers out, and doing a job for the team. It’s not my favourite time of the day, but I enjoy the challenge and my job as nightwatchman. I know I’m doing a really good job for my team if I protect the batsman, and it’s nice to walk off at the end of the day having done my job.”Anderson’s presence, however, provides Australia with an obvious target in a morning session that will once again begin early at 10am, and Johnson believes that he and his bowlers had found their rhythm by the close of play following an off-the-boil spell with the new ball.”We probably started off our innings not that great but we hung in there and got back to bowling good areas,” he said. “When you bowl those good areas there was enough there in that wicket still. Obviously with conditions being overcast there was still that little bit of swing there, a little bit off the deck still, so we need to go out there in the morning and start very well.”Hopefully get a little bit of luck to go our way as well, I think they had a little bit of luck go their way but that’s just how cricket is sometimes,” he added. “Once we got bowling in those good areas we showed we can do it.”Johnson, who claimed two of the three England wickets to fall including Jonathan Trott for a duck, said he had been lifted by his own role with the bat, in which he clubbed a hard-hitting 53 to help add 91 for the last two wickets.”Yes definitely, it was a good partnership me and Hilfy got in the end there, it was very important in the way the game was going,” he said. “The way they bowled was pretty impressive, they bowled very good lines and lengths throughout that whole time, that innings. But we got our score up to I think a pretty good score on that wicket.”

South Africa may play cautious with Kallis

Jacques Kallis’ return to full fitness headlined South Africa’s first day of World Cup training in the subcontinent

Jacques Kallis is fully fit but South Africa may not “expose him too early”•AFP

Jacques Kallis’ return to full fitness headlined South Africa’s first day of World Cup training in the subcontinent. Kallis “had a full net today and he started bowling again” but that doesn’t mean he is guaranteed to feature in the starting XI come February 24, when South Africa’s campaign gets underway against West Indies in Delhi.”I don’t see the need to expose him too early,” Graeme Smith, the South Africa captain, said at the team’s arrival press conference in Chennai. Kallis has been out of action since the first week of January when he injured his rib during South Africa’s Test series against India. Kallis was hit by fast bowler Sreesanth, resulting in bruising and a contusion and was left out of the ODI series in order to recover for the World Cup.This will be Kallis’ fourth World Cup – he’s the most experienced South African player in the squad and also their premier allrounder. In the absence of a player in the mould of Shaun Pollock or Lance Klusener and with the selectors opting to leave out Albie Morkel, South Africa’s only other genuine allrounder is Robin Peterson, with JP Duminy and Faf du Plessis fulfilling the role to a slightly lesser degree. That means Kallis’ value in this tournament is going to be massive and Smith wants him to be monitored carefully. “I don’t feel the need to put him under pressure today to be ready tomorrow. Having him fit is a big asset so we will manage him well upfront.”Managing Kallis, which may well translate into rotating him, will have a significant impact on the balance on the squad, as was seen during the ODI series against India. South Africa found themselves a batsman short in the lower order, which showed a weakness at No.6 and 7, and a bowler who can perform the dual role of controlling the game by stemming the run flow and taking wickets. The addition of Morne van Wyk, an experienced batsman, to the squad for the tournament, may plug the first gap and Smith thinks the second has smoothed itself out because of the sum of its parts. “We’ve got two left armers [Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Wayne Parnell] which is different and three, frontline spinners [Johan Botha, Robin Peterson and Imran Tahir]. This is our most varied attack in a long time.”Smith is correct when he says South Africa have struggled to achieve an attack that was this dynamic in the past. It’s all part of what he thinks has been the growth of South African cricket on an international level since 1991. “Back then, South African cricket was still very young in terms of readmission into sport. There were a lot of building blocks that needed to be put in place,” he said. South Africa always had solid foundations and produced quality cricketers, but now, twenty years later, it appears as though they are not just content with the solid brick house, but ready to expand on it.From that perspective, it makes sense that South Africa have their most inexperienced but dynamic World Cup squad for this tournament. “This current squad has a lot of energy in the way they play,” Smith said. “There are a lot of young guys who are really excited to have this opportunity.”Smith took over as captain as a young man himself, at 22, and admits that while he was finding his feet, “the first three to four years were inconsistent.” He is now leading the team in his swansong as ODI captain and said he has leant to “trust the guys and that gives them confidence as well.” Smith said he will allow every member of his team “to play their natural game,” because he believed by doing that the team can succeed. The only man who might not be able to do that is Kallis, because his instincts call for him to play in any situation regardless of his own injuries. This time, he is going to be carefully handled so that when the team needs his natural game the most, he will be there.

– Vou me arrumar (nas outras competições) como me arrumei no Paulistão.

O Peixe é o vice-líder do Grupo 6, atrás justamente do próximo rival.
