Amir must focus on rehabilitation – Lorgat

Mohammad Amir must go through a process of rehabilitation and not focus on the reduction of the ban imposed on him by an ICC tribunal, the ICC chief Haroon Lorgat has said

Nagraj Gollapudi21-Mar-2012Mohammad Amir must go through a process of rehabilitation, including educating himself and others about the perils of corruption, and not focus on the reduction of the ban imposed on him by an ICC tribunal for his involvement in spot-fixing, the ICC chief Haroon Lorgat has said. Lorgat also said the ICC rules do not allow for a reduction of the five-year ban and stressed the importance of respecting the verdict the independent tribunal had reached. In his first statement after returning to Pakistan from England on February 26, Amir had said he would not request the ICC to reduce his ban, which runs until 2015. Lorgat said Amir should start the rehabilitation process by doing the right things.”I would prefer that the starting point should not be about whether we [ICC] could reduce the sentence,” Lorgat told ESPNcricinfo in Mumbai, en route to Sri Lanka where he will release the first batch of tickets for the ICC World Twenty20. “Let that [the reduction of the ban] be the end result of a process of rehabilitation since he has now come clean, if that is indeed the case. Part of the sanction he received from the ICC tribunal was to educate himself and for him to educate others. So let us do all the necessary building blocks before we get to a point where anyone could ask, ‘Does he now deserve a review?'”Amir was released from custody after serving half of his six-month sentence for his involvement in the spot-fixing scandal during the Lord’s Test in 2010. The Crown Prosecution Service had brought charges against Amir, Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif under conspiracy to accept corrupt payments and conspiracy to cheat at gambling after a sting operation carried out by the now defunct . Butt and Asif had pleaded not guilty in court but were found guilty in November 2011; Amir pleaded guilty to the charges and did not stand trial. Amir, however, had pleaded not guilty before the ICC’s tribunal in Doha in February 2011.Life could have been different and perhaps easier for Amir, Lorgat said, had he pleaded guilty in front of the ICC tribunal in Doha. Amir had maintained he was innocent at the time. The three-man tribunal – comprising Michael Beloff QC, Sharad Rao and Justice Albie Sachs – banned Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Amir for ten, seven and five years respectively, after finding them guilty of spot-fixing. Amir’s reaction to that decision was that he would appeal the ban in the Court of Arbitration of Sports in Switzerland. He later decided not to appeal.”I find it very unfortunate for Mohammad Amir. We did provide him with lots of opportunities,” Lorgat said, when asked if he was disappointed Amir did not confess in Doha. “The tribunal might have looked at it differently and who knows what decision they could have come to on sanction. It could have been a different story. I am sad for him.”In an interview on Sky TV after his release from custody, Amir said he had been tricked into bowling no-balls to order during the Lord’s Test by his agent Mazhar Majeed and his captain Salman Butt. He said he did not “have the courage” to admit his guilt to the ICC tribunal.Lorgat’s advice for Amir was to not to give up and, “do all the right things.” “Come into the education process and don’t just give up the game,” Lorgat said. “Retain your faith in the future. He must be prepared to tell his story and explain to others what they need to be careful of.”Lorgat felt the ICC, the PCB and Amir, and all other stakeholders, should work together to try and ensure no other player falls prey to corruption. He said Amir could talk, over video, to the players during the ICC Under-19 World Cup to be held in Australia later this year. “If Mohammad Amir stands up and delivers a message of caution about this murky world, people are going to sit up and listen. That is one example of rehabilitation.”

Levi and Tsotsobe star in opening win

Richard Levi’s half-century gave a powerful start to the South Africans’ batting, before Lonwabo Tsotsobe’s early hat-trick helped set up a 20-run win against Canterbury in Christchurch. The South Africans’ tour opener wasn’t all one-sided though, as their middle order stumbled and their bowlers were given a scare by a late cameo by Matt Henry. After Canterbury chose to field, Levi gave the visitors a blazing start. He outscored Hashim Amla in an explosive opening stand as the South Africans raced to 80 for 0 in eight overs. The most productive over of the match was the fifth – 21 runs came off it as Levi started by slamming medium-pacer Logan van Beek for fours fours. He reached his fifty in the next over with a big six over midwicket but Levi’s dismissal in the ninth over led to the visitors losing their way.The next six overs yielded only 27 runs for the loss of Amla, Colin Ingram and captain AB de Villiers. The South Africans had looked set for at least 180 when Levi was in the middle, but they ended up with a relatively modest 150.If Canterbury were buoyed by their efforts in the second half of the visitors’ batting, their hopes were punctured by Tsotsobe’s hat-trick. He ended the second over of the chase by dismissing the openers George Worker and Peter Fulton before returning to trap Shanan Stewart lbw with an incutter. In his third over, he took out highly rated youngster Tom Latham and by the end of his spell, Canterbury were at 24 for 4.The match meandered along and the South Africans seemed headed for a huge victory before the No. 9, Henry, swung five sixes in a 17-ball 42 to briefly raise Canterbury’s spirits. The fight was virtually over in the 18th over, though, as he edged a Morne Morkel yorker through to the keeper and Canterbury were bowled out with an over to spare.de Villiers was thrilled with the successful start to the tour. “This was exactly what we needed,” he said. “We needed a competitive challenge and all the credit to Canterbury’s batsmen for fighting the way they did towards the end.”He was also pleased with the form of Levi and Tsotsobe. “Richard is a phenomenal batsman, he is an impact player and it is very exciting for us to have a player of his calibre at the top of the order.”Lopsy has just been outstanding. I don’t know how he does it so consistently, he just keeps taking wickets.”

India's batsmen hope for SCG magic

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale02-Jan-2012Match factsEven by Sachin Tendulkar’s lofty standards, his record at the SCG is remarkable•Getty Images

Tuesday, January 3
Start time 1030 (2330 GMT)Big PictureAustralia. India. The SCG. Four years ago, those three elements together sparked one of the most controversial Tests in recent history. It was a match of umpiring blunders, a racism allegation, excessive appealing and ugly behaviour all round. Fortunately for the integrity of this upcoming contest, several of the key protagonists are gone. Andrew Symonds has retired. Harbhajan Singh is no longer considered one of India’s two best spinners. Both of the umpires, who struggled to maintain control on the field, have stepped down from international cricket. It was also a Test that went down to the wire, finishing late on the fifth day, as the shadows grew longer over the Sydney Cricket Ground. The fans will hope for a similarly tight finale this time around, albeit without the argy-bargy and ill feeling between the two teams. A memorable contest would be fitting, for this is the 100th Test to be played at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground. Only Lord’s and the MCG have hosted more Tests. This time, the teams head to Sydney with Australia 1-0 up in the series, having won inside four days in Melbourne. India’s batsmen were the major disappointment in the Boxing Day Test. Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar all made 60s or 70s in the first innings but in the second, Tendulkar’s 32 was the best score. Chasing 292, that was vastly inadequate. Australia’s strong and consistent pace attack built pressure and the Indians could not show the skills that had earned them more than 53,000 Test runs collectively over their Test careers. There is more of a chance of India’s batsmen enjoying the SCG. Sachin Tendulkar’s Test record at the venue makes for imposing reading. In four Sydney Tests, he has made 148*, 45, 4, 241*, 60*, 154* and 12. VVS Laxman’s Sydney efforts have been just as impressive: 7, 167, 178, 109, 20. But they and their colleagues will need to show significant improvements after last week if they are to level the series.Form guide (most recent first)Australia: WLWWL
India: LDWWL
Players to watch out for…This time last year, Nathan Lyon had not played for his state in any format. Now he is a veteran of eight Tests. In a year full of impressive debuts by Australian cricketers, his is the most remarkable story. The Adelaide Oval groundsman who was asked by the state coach to bowl in the nets, Lyon has shown every club cricketer that there is hope. All you need is an opportunity. He wasn’t a key part of the attack in Melbourne, where the fast men dominated, but at the SCG, particularly later in the Test, he could be asked to bowl a lot of overs of offspin. Incredibly, Lyon has not played a first-class match at the SCG, traditionally the best venue for spin in Australia. To watch Sachin Tendulkar upper-cut Peter Siddle over the head of the slips for six off the first ball after tea on the second day at the MCG was a sight to behold. Tendulkar played brilliantly in that innings and it was impossible not to anticipate his hundredth international hundred. Siddle ended that dream in the last over of the day by bowling Tendulkar for 73. It would perhaps be even more fitting if Tendulkar were able to reach his milestone in the 100th Sydney Test. He is the master of the SCG, and the only grounds around the world where he has a higher Test average are in Bangladesh.Team newsAustralia included Ryan Harris in the 12-man squad at the expense of Daniel Christian and Mitchell Starc, neither of whom made the starting line-up in Melbourne. However, the selectors chose to use the same XI as at the MCG, with Harris more likely for the third Test in Perth, where Australia might consider a four-man pace attack.Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Ed Cowan, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 Ricky Ponting, 5 Michael Clarke (capt), 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Peter Siddle, 9 James Pattinson, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Ben Hilfenhaus.India’s batting was a problem in Melbourne, so they might consider including Rohit Sharma at the expense of Virat Kohli. Should Rohit play it will be his Test debut but he will bring plenty of international experience – he has played 72 ODIs and 22 Twenty20s for India.India (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 Virat Kohli / Rohit Sharma, 7 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Umesh Yadav.Pitch and conditionsThe SCG pitch has traditionally not bounced as much as other Australian surfaces, perhaps one of the reasons it has been appreciated by India’s batsmen. But that character has changed, and the curator Tom Parker expects a similar pitch to that on which England’s swing and seam bowlers set up an innings victory last summer. It is worth noting, though, that in that Test England’s batsmen scored 644.”In the last few years I think the Sydney pitch has changed texture from when it used to be a real dust bowl and really helped the spinners,” Michael Hussey said on Sunday. “The last few years it has been really seamer friendly and particularly tough for batting, especially early in the match. It definitely looks a lighter colour. Generally that’s the way it has gone over the years, it has slowed down a little bit and helped the spinners.”The forecast for the first day is sunny and 28C, while there could be the chance of storms and showers over the next three days of the Test.Stats and trivia Sachin Tendulkar has the highest average of all Test cricketers at the SCG. In four Tests there he averages 221.33 VVS Laxman averages 96.20 at the SCG, a far cry from the 14.25 he averages at the MCG The changes in Australia’s team from this time last year have been stark: only five men who played in the SCG Ashes loss are in the side for this Test The only team to have beaten Australia in Sydney Tests in the past 15 years was England, who did it in 2003 and 2011Quotes”I am a bit nervous because the stars seem to be aligning with Sachin needing one more hundred in the 100th Test match in Sydney. He’s made runs here before. It’s a bit ominous.”
“Well, he’s always close to a milestone. If you see his career in the last three years, whatever he has done, somehow he has been very close to a milestone, whether he’s playing the most number of ODIs or Test matches or the 100th hundred or all the things.”

A century from David Hussey put Victoria on top on the first day at the MCG, where the unbeaten Queensland struggled to contain the hosts’ top order. The openers Rob Quiney and Chris Rogers dominated early with a 133-run stand and by the close of play, Victoria had reached 4 for 340 with Hussey unbeaten on 119 and Andrew McDonald on 41.Their partnership had reached 86 after Cameron White was caught behind for 21 off the bowling of Nathan Reardon. Queensland’s leading fast bowler Ben Cutting bowled only nine overs for the day and was believed to be suffering from back soreness after spending much of the past week bowling in the nets at the Gabba trying to win a Test spot.Cutting did collect the wicket of Aaron Finch, whose disappointing season continued with a duck when he was trapped lbw. Quiney and Rogers seemed to enjoy the midday start, both posting half-centuries after White won the toss and chose to bat.Rogers and Quiney are both among the top four run scorers in the Shield so far this summer, Rogers’ 62 taking him to second place and Quiney’s 87 placing him fourth. Rogers was caught behind off the pace of Matthew Gale and Quiney missed the chance for a hundred when he edged behind off Reardon.

Gibson backs fast bowlers to challenge India

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson is banking on his pace bowlers to challenge India’s strong batting line-up during the three-Test series starting at Feroz Shah Kotla on Saturday

Ottis Gibson believes his bowling attack has gained enough ground over the last 12 months to challenge a top-ranked team like India•AFP

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson is banking on his pace bowlers to challenge India’s strong batting line-up during the three-Test series starting at Feroz Shah Kotla on Sunday. West Indies arrived in the country following a short tour of Bangladesh, where they won the Test series 1-0.Gibson said the team is high on confidence after that win and are suitably warmed-up to subcontinental conditions.”Over the last six to 12 months our fast bowlers, Ravi Rampaul, Fidel Edwards, Kemar Roach and Darren Sammy have done well and won us matches,” Gibson said. “We know that India obviously will be heavy on spin but we believe in the quality of our fast bowlers.”We have Fidel bowling quick at the moment and we hope we can cause some problems to the formidable Indian batting line-up. We believe that we have the quality to back ourselves. We know that the ball doesn’t swing very long. You need to have added skills and we pay a lot of attention to that. We are skilled enough to reverse it and get wickets as well.”India are playing their first Test series since their poor tour of England where they were whitewashed 4-0. The injury-ravaged team struggled against the fast bowlers, and as a result, lost their No.1 ranking in Tests. Gibson said India were still a formidable side despite their recent setback.”Against this Indian batting line-up, you probably need to play seven bowlers,” Gibson said. “We will look at that over the course of the next few days and work on our combination.”Edwards and legspinner Davendra Bishoo took five-wicket hauls in the second Test against Bangladesh in Mirpur, which the visitors won comfortably by 229 runs. Gibson praised Bishoo’s performance in Bangladesh and was confident he would be a threat in India as well.”Bishoo is a talented bowler and has got 32 wickets in seven games. He never hesitates to ask questions and his capacity for learning is showing. Coming to India, he understands that he can really come into his game in these conditions.Commenting on India’s bowling combination Gibson said felt that India may not feel the absence of offspinner Harbhajan Singh, who was overlooked in favour of the rising R Ashwin.”Somebody like Harbhajan has taken a lot of wickets and you might look at that (his absence) as a negative but Ashwin has been outstanding in one-day cricket. When a player makes his debut, people tend to think ‘oh he may not be ready’ but obviously the selectors believe that he is ready and that makes him very dangerous.”

Ferguson hundred gets Redbacks home

Callum Ferguson’s third one-day century delivered victory to South Australia in a tight match that appeared to have slipped from their grasp

Callum Ferguson’s third one-day century delivered victory to South Australia in a tight match that appeared to have slipped from their grasp. An outstanding and unbeaten 65-run partnership for the ninth wicket between Ferguson and Nathan Lyon saw the Redbacks past Western Australia’s 233 with two overs to spare, after Luke Ronchi’s hundred rescued the Warriors from a poor start. The fortunes of both sides changed significantly throughout the contest, as first the Warriors struggled to 7 for 123 before Ronchi and Nathan Rimmington compiled a terrific 110-run stand that pushed them to a competitive 7 for 233. Then it was South Australia’s turn to worry, as they lost a wicket from the first ball of their chase and then battled to 8 for 170.From there, it was Ferguson and Lyon who saved the day for the hosts. Ferguson’s classy innings was a career-best as he paced the effort perfectly, taking his time early and playing a few more shots as his partners continued to disappear. But it was Lyon who struck the winning runs, with a powerful pull for six off Rimmington confirming the two-wicket victory and allowing him to finish unbeaten on 37. Nathan Coulter-Nile had picked up 3 for 64 in a strong display, while Michael Beer was superb with 3 for 39, including Daniel Harris lbw playing back to the first ball of the innings as Marcus North opened up with spin. The Redbacks had also opened with spin earlier in the day, but it was Gary Putland’s early strikes that put Western Australia on the back foot as he swung the ball dangerously and took three wickets in his first spell. The legspinner Cullen Bailey, playing his first one-day game for his state in five years, collected two lower-order wickets before Ronchi led the recovery. It was a wonderful innings from Ronchi, who has struggled to hold his place as Western Australia’s first-choice gloveman in the past couple of seasons. He was watchful early but cut loose later, taking 25 from the last over as the nerves began to affect Kane Richardson. It was in that 50th over that Ronchi brought up his hundred and the milestone clearly meant a lot, as he pumped his fist and jumped for joy, having secured his place in the team and given the Warriors hope of victory. In the end, their top-order troubles still cost them, and they are still looking for their first win of the Ryobi Cup.
