A week into his retirement, Ricky Ponting is already developing a taste for life after cricket.Ponting admitted he quite enjoyed getting to a Test match right on the appointed 10.30am start time rather than two hours before, and that he was not exactly sorry to be missing training for the Hobart Hurricanes in Melbourne. This was in order to be conveyed around Bellerive Oval in the back of a ute as a way of saying thankyou to the Tasmanian cricket faithful, who numbered 6,221 on the first day of the first Test against Sri Lanka. The question of Ponting’s life after Test matches has been pondered by many in the wake of his emotional exit at the conclusion of the South Africa series, and the man himself is wondering aloud at how the pull of participating in the game will be diminished by the lack of Australian duty to sustain him.”I’ll see how I feel about cricket at the end of this season,” Ponting told Channel Nine. “It might be a little harder for me I reckon, playing those last few games out, knowing there’s not the bigger picture in mind as there’s always been for me when I’ve played state cricket, which is to play for Australia.”While Cricket Australia and the national captain Michael Clarke are equally keen to have Ponting still involved with the team in a coaching or mentoring capacity, the attraction of a lucrative and far less stressful role as a television commentator has its appeal.”I’d like to work in the media at some stage, at some time, in some way, shape or form,” Ponting said. “Just being around cricket for as long as I have and being part of successful teams, I think I’ve got a pretty good knowledge of the game and I’m pretty insightful on the game I think. So we’ll wait and see what happens.”Ponting was memorably granted a guard of honour by South Africa’s captain Graeme Smith at the WACA ground as he commenced his final innings, and in Hobart he and his family were flanked by the ranks of cricketers from his home club of Mowbray in Launceston before starting on his valedictory lap of the oval.”As we all know things came to an end for me last week, so to be here in a different capacity today is good fun,” Ponting said. “I’m excited about this next little phase of my life, all my family here and a lot of my club-mates have even made it down for the game – they probably bought all their tickets weeks ago thinking I was going to be playing, but unfortunately I’m here as a spectator with them today.”I generally get a little bit embarrassed when people start talking about me, and even having a whole lunch break in a Test match dedicated to me today is a little bit more than what I would have expected as well. But the reason it’s here is for me to come and say goodbye to the Hobart fans and people of Tasmania who have looked after me so well over a long period of time.”As for those final moments in Perth, particularly his opponents’ spontaneous gestures of thanks for a career spanning 17 years and innumerable achievements, Ponting said they would not soon be forgotten. “That is something I’ll never, ever forget,” he said. “When I pulled Graeme Smith out of the line and shook his hand I said ‘I really appreciate this’ and he said ‘no, you deserve it, but just make sure you don’t get too many against us today’.”I thought all the running around that was happening after I got out was just them celebrating the wicket, but they were actually running over to try to shake my hand and say congratulations on my career. Robin Peterson got me out and actually apologised, he said ‘I’m sorry about that’.”So there were a couple of things that took me by surprise, the guard of honour and then all of them running to me on the way off. I got 10 metres from the gate and realised I hadn’t said goodbye to the crowd either, so I had to take my helmet off, and do all that stuff, and make sure that I acknowledged my family, and everyone there as well. A lot of those are memories I’ll never forget.”Before Ponting thinks about whether he might play another season, he has the BBL to negotiate, flying to join the Hurricanes ahead of their date with Shane Warne’s Melbourne Stars on Saturday. But the enthusiasm that has always been there for any game of cricket is quickly being tested by the more leisurely life. “I’m actually missing a training session so it’s not that bad,” Ponting said. “The boys are over in Melbourne training at the moment, so I’d rather be here I think.”

Deccan Chargers reject sole bid for franchise

The auction for the IPL Deccan Chargers franchise on Thursday has ended in an anti-climax with the team’s owners receiving one bid, which they have rejected

Deccan Chargers’ future is still up in the air•AFP

The auction for the IPL Deccan Chargers franchise on Thursday has ended in an anti-climax with the team’s owners rejecting the sole bid they received. This leaves the franchise’s future up in the air, with the BCCI ‘s working committee meeting on Saturday likely to take a decision on its next course of action. The solitary bid reportedly came from PVP Ventures, a company that finances film projects in India. No details were made public but reports said the offer was for Rs 900 crore ($164 million). Only three bidders had evinced interest to buy the Chargers: besides PVP Ventures, RPG Group and Jaypee Group also bought the bid document. However on the day of the auction only PVP turned up.*”They [the franchise] informed us that the price and terms were not suitable so they did not accept it,” BCCI president N Srinivasan said in Chennai. “The BCCI assisted the Deccan Chargers and we also looked at the eligibility criteria, whether they were fit and proper. We found that the party was acceptable to us. After that, though, it was between Deccan Chargers and the bidder.”Today’s development puts the ball squarely back with the BCCI, which could conceivably terminate the agreement with Chargers and put the players on the auction block. Though no decision has formally been taken, it is understood that the board has lost patience with Deccan Chronicles Holdings Limited (DCHL). Its plan for the way forward could include terminating the contract with Chargers and floating a tender to add a new team to the IPL. There would be a shortlist of cities for the bidders to choose from, with the location of the new franchise to be decided by the highest bid for one of those cities.”DCHL have been been found out for various violations,” a board official told ESPNcricinfo. “The BCCI tried to pitch in and help but that has not proved useful. The board needs to protect the IPL model and a new franchise can only enhance the IPL.”If the board does scrap Chargers’ contract then it will encash the bank guarantee of the franchise to settle the dues of the players. Most players and coaching staff are reportedly yet to receive 85% of their contracted amount.A positive outcome today could have changed that but it is understood that while DCHL were happy to go with the offer, the company’s lending banks, rejected it. “The lenders [banks] and the owner [DCHL] could not come to an agreement over the mode of payment proposed by the bidder,” the official said. The official said the banks were not happy with PVP’s plan to divide the bid amount in two parts over the next ten years. “They said they would pay Rs 450 crores ($82 million) in the next five years, at the rate of 90 crore per annum, and the rest in 2022,” the official said. The banks’ reluctance, the official said, could stem from the fact that they stood to receive the sale proceeds – which, in this case, would be staggered.Last month, the banks had knocked on the BCCI’s doors to help them out, after which the board had set a deadline of September 15 for Chargers to clear all their dues including player payments and report with a clean slate. However, DCHL said they were unable to sort out the problems and, after seeking the board’s intervention, placed an advertisement announcing that the franchise was for sale. The board official said that Chargers still had two days’ time to figure out their final decision: “The [BCCI] decision could depend on what the Chargers report on Saturday.”Thursday’s development is a harsh reality check for the IPL, whose valuations across several properties and deals had brought the BCCI, its owners, more than $2 billion. Mumbai Indians were the costliest franchise at $111.9 million in the first team auction in 2008, with Chargers third at $107 million; just two years later, the Sahara group successfully bid $370m for Pune Warriors while the Kochi franchise, now dissolved, fetched $333 million. Now, however, franchises are experiencing operational difficulties vis-à-vis the IPL. Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore have delayed payments to their players; some franchises with multiple owners are reported to be looking at selling stakes to raise funds.* September 13, 19.30 GMT This story has been updated with the details of potential bidders

England discard Kevin Pietersen was out first ball playing for Surrey in their four-wicket Clydesdale Bank 40 defeat by his old club Hampshire at West End.Pietersen, left out of the side for the Third Test against South Africa, came in at 14 for 1 after Surrey had chosen to bat first. But he was at the crease for just a matter of seconds before pushing forward to a delivery from left-arm spinner Liam Dawson and having his off stump knocked back.Pietersen returned to the pavilion head bowed to the cheers of a 12,000 crowd who remembered how he quit Hampshire mid-way through the 2010 season because he said it was too far to commute from his London home.Surrey struggled from that stage, making an inadequate 175 for 9 from their 40 overs which Hampshire surpassed from the first ball of the 38th over. With Pietersen sat on the dressing room balcony, Surrey slumped to 38 for 4 with the fall of Steve Davies’ wicket. But then came an innings-saving stand of 94 in 22 overs between Matt Spriegel and Zander de Bruyn.Danny Briggs broke the partnership when he had Spriegel caught in the deep for 47 and when de Bruyn’s bright 57 came to an end at 173, Surrey fell away, losing their last four wickets for one run.Pace bowler David Griffiths returned to dismiss de Bruyn and Zafar Ansari, then ran out Murali Kartik before Chris Wood bowled Gareth Batty.James Vince was run out in the fourth over when Hampshire responded but the Group B table-toppers were always in control. Opener Michael Carberry, restored to the team after injury, made 54 from 94 balls before being lbw to Kartik and Hampshire nerves were tested when Dawson was out to make them 150 for 6.Michael Bates and Sean Ervine came together with 26 needed from just under five overs and progress was slow against Ansari and Jade Dernbach. But Bates lifted Ansari for six in the 38th over and the rest was a formality as Hampshire breezed to their seventh competition victory.Pietersen spent most of the Hampshire innings, hands behind his back at mid-on and in the gully but was not called on to bowl.It was the second time this season he had been out first ball against Hampshire this season, the same fate befalling him in a rain-hit Friends Life t20 at The Oval with Dawson again the bowler.

Bresnan burst leaves England sensing victory

An outstanding spell of reverse swing from Tim Bresnan put England in sight of a series-clinching victory at Trent Bridge

The Report by David Hopps27-May-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball commentaryWest Indies’ top order folded in familiar fashion•PA Photos

It does not matter how patiently you scrap, or how successful your bowling plans prove to be. When you have arguably the weakest top three in Test cricket, one of them is back at the hotel with influenza anyway, and the bedrock of your batting hooks a ball down fine leg’s throat you are not going to win many Test matches. That is especially the case when the IPL has stolen some of your star performers and you are playing the No. 1 Test side in the world on a Trent Bridge ground that, even in its guise as a permanently sun-drenched land of lost youth, fills that side with supreme confidence that they can wrest control of the Test in one outstanding session with the ball. To reduce West Indies to 61 for 6 exceeded perhaps even England’s wildest expectations.Tim Bresnan, who loves this ground, where he has good command of reverse swing, closed off the session expertly with figures of 3 for 10. Add to this an unbeaten 39 (which he described as “a bit dogged, really”) when an England first-innings lead was not certain, and despite the impressive rival claims of Steve Finn he can look forward to retaining his place at Edgbaston.A West Indies attack that in style, with the possible exception of Kemar Roach, is about as far removed from their great attacks of their heyday as it is possible to be, strove manfully to restrict England’s first-innings lead to 58 on a third day when many assumed that it would be in excess of 250. Instead of a back-breaking day in the sun, they bowled resourcefully, keeping England to a further 169 after they began at 259 for 2.Within the first 17 overs of the final session, England laid those efforts to waste. James Anderson picked off the openers in his second and third overs, Kieran Powell driving irresponsibly and dragging on; Adrian Barath stuck in front of middle with minimal foot movement. Does Chris Gayle, one wonder, ever feel a pang of guilt as he cold-shoulders West Indies Test cricket in favour of the riches of IPL or is he unabashed at what he sees as simple financial logic? As Kirk Edwards, the flu victim, could not bat until No. 7, Shivnarine Chanderpaul came in after 4.2 overs. Some have clamoured for him to move up the order, but presumably not like this. He lasted 15 balls before Stuart Broad, face reddening in the heat, upped the intensity when it was most needed, fired in a well-directed short ball and Chanderpaul’s top-edged hook flew obligingly to Jonathan Trott at fine leg.Darren Bravo is regarded in the Caribbean as a batsman of immense promise, but he has now been outgunned by Australia and England in turn. He was caught on the back foot, playing across one from Bresnan that kept a little low. If the shot was technically dubious, his decision to ask for a review was criminal; replays predictably showed the ball hitting middle. When Bresnan trapped Ramdin in front, Marlon Samuels wisely talked his partner out of wasting the second review.Edwards must have wondered if his journey was really necessary. A woeful tour was encapsulated by a woeful day; a woeful day encapsulated by a woeful minute at the crease. Stupified, eyes half closed, he heard two lbw appeals in turn, the second of them successful for Bresnan, to round off arguably his best spell of the summer.England also owed much to Andrew Strauss, who was 102 not out at start of play and who crucially broke his habits of old by surviving into mid-afternoon. He never quite recovered the fluency of the previous day as England’s visions of 600-plus evaporated; not as much reconnecting with his form of the previous day as sticking around in the hope of an introduction, but his longevity was invaluable. He fell on 141, caught at the wicket off Darren Sammy.Strauss has only ever added a maximum of six runs when he has had a hundred in the bank at start of play, a statistical quirk that had been extended in the first Test at Lord’s. He had admitted to his frustration on the previous evening, saying: “Scoring a hundred takes a bit out of you physically so it is a bit tricky the next morning but there’s no reason why you can’t kick on and get a big score. It’s a mindset thing the next day, to try and reconnect with what you did the day before rather than worrying too much.”England’s individual batting weaknesses were exposed at regular intervals before lunch: Kevin Pietersen’s fondness for moving across his stumps, Jonny Bairstow’s apparent fallibility against short-pitched quick bowling – Kemar Roach’s aggressive use of the second new ball was quite an introduction to the realities of Test cricket – and Matt Prior’s vulnerability to the good-length ball that seams back.Pietersen, 72 not out overnight, had tweeted his intention to go to bed shortly before 7pm. Perhaps he is still on India time, a sort of vicarious link to the IPL. Or perhaps he was so eager to make use of a flat pitch, and pull alongside Strauss’ collection of 21 Test centuries again, that he felt 12 hours sleep was advisable. Whatever, it did not do the trick as he only added only eight, lbw as Ravi Rampaul cut one back. When Aleem Dar gives a batsman out, it is safest to assume that he is probably right, but he erred when he turned down West Indies’ appeal for lbw against Ian Bell with the first over of the new ball. West Indies reviewed it and Bell – who had also been dropped on 15 by the wicketkeeper, Denesh Ramdin, off Shane Shillingford – was clearly out. The last of the morning’s victims was Prior, whose aggressive intent ended when Sammy cut one back to bowl him.West Indies, short on resources with Shillingford’s offspin ineffective, settled for containment in the shape of a wholehearted spell by Sammy. But dispensing with an England tail is not an easy business. Folklore has it that the pup with the shortest, thickest tail is the pick of the litter and in terms of Test rankings it appeared the belief might be well-founded as Bresnan and Broad added 53 for the eighth wicket before Broad fell to a top-edged paddle sweep, not his forte.Graeme Swann feathered an inside edge against Marlon Samuels that was spotted by the new, exceptionally-sensitive Hot Spot. As Swann walked off, bemused, West Indies felt right in the match. Nothing could have been further from the truth.

Clarke reckons Wade's a Test batsman

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke has signed off from the West Indies by opening up the possibility of Matthew Wade retaining his Test place as a batsman should Brad Haddin return as the Test gloveman next summer

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke has signed off from the West Indies by opening up the possibility of Matthew Wade retaining his Test place as a batsman should Brad Haddin return as the Test gloveman next summer.Wade’s pitch-defying century in Dominica earned him man-of-the-match honours in the final Test of a 2-0 series win over West Indies, and also demonstrated his skills as a batsman. It is an exceedingly rare thing in Australian cricket for a wicketkeeper to make the national side on his batting alone, though Adam Gilchrist and Haddin both played as batsmen in the ODI team while waiting for their predecessors to step aside.”I think if he plays the way he’s been playing there’s no doubt about it [he could play as a batsman],” Clarke said. “And his numbers say that for Victoria. He’s a wonderful wicketkeeper but I think that his batting’s got a lot of potential too. He plays spin as good as anyone.”Like I said, I think he has learned a hell of a lot throughout the one-day series about different conditions and playing spin in Australia compared to playing spin in the Caribbean, which will help him going into the subcontinent. And we’ve got a Test tour coming up over in India.”There’s a lot of cricket to be played before any of the selectors have to worry about the next XI or the next squad of 15 for our next Test series, but Wadey, hopefully, will continue to perform in the shorter form until the next Test match comes around.”Clarke, an avowed friend and supporter of Haddin, declined to repeat his pre-Test assertion that his New South Wales team-mate would automatically return to the keeping spot for Australia’s next Test, against South Africa in November, should he make himself available. However he remained staunch in his support for Haddin, who withdrew from this tour due to a serious family matter.”I’ve made it very clear that think Wadey’s done everything in his power to put as much pressure on the selectors as possible,” Clarke said. “What I also said was that if Brad was available for this tour he would have played the first Test match. I think it’s great there’s competition as a batter, as a bowler, as a wicketkeeper. It’s fantastic for the game. How lucky are we in an Australian cricket team to have either Brad Haddin or Matthew Wade available for selection in the Test team?”I think, Wadey, if he plays like that, certainly will continue to put pressure on not only the wicketkeeper’s spot but a batsman’s position too. That’s something the selectors will have to worry about in time.”I will still continue to support anybody that plays for this Australian team. Even though Brad’s not here on this tour. My friendship, yes … but also [because of] his experience, his knowledge, his success as a Test player, I’ll continue to support him, as I will always support Wadey. I think he’s done fantastically in the shorter form of the game. He got his first opportunity here in Test cricket and he’s grabbed it with both hands so there’s nothing more he can do and now it’s up to the selectors, when the time comes, to make a decision.”For his part, Wade said he had derived great satisfaction from developing as a wicketkeeper and a batsman in conditions as foreign as any he has experienced. He also felt the tour would work in his favour ahead of the 2013 tour of India, which serves as the prelude to that year’s dual Ashes series.”Probably the all-round experience of coming over here in the one-day series without knowing too much about these conditions,” Wade said, when asked what he had found most rewarding. “Learning a lot in the first three one-dayers, as I’ve spoken about, in St Vincent and then continuing to develop my game in the nets with Justin Langer and Mickey Arthur, and trying to find my way in difficult conditions against spin bowling. So, probably that’s most pleasing thing, going home knowing that I’ve learned a hell of a lot and I’m improving.”I’ve been to the subcontinent a couple of times but only to play the short formats of the game. These conditions are very similar, I’ve been told. So, fingers crossed, if I get an opportunity to play, hopefully I can bring what I’ve learned here to the subcontinent and do my stuff.”
