SA triumph in straightforward D/L chase

ScorecardSouth Africa moved a step closer to a series whitewash with a six-wicket victory at Stellenbosch but their run chase was given a generous donation by the Duckworth-Lewis method. The game’s second interruption for rain came as South Africa required 84 to win in 90 balls with seven wickets remaining. They were on course for victory, if needing to raise their run-rate by a significant margin. But the revised target made the task very straightforward as they resumed with 33 to win from 30 balls – a target that proved no issue as they won with eight balls to spare.Victory may have come anyway as Clyde Fortuin was marshalling the innings well. He and Jason Smith added 56 as the chase made good progress. But had Fortuin been dismissed with plenty of work left to do – as would have been the case without rain – England could have got home.As it was their middle-order blow out cost them. Having elected to bat they would have wanted to set a more challenging score. Callum Jackson and Kishen Velani put together a stand of 133 but progress was slow and, as new batsman tried to accelerate in the last 10 overs, wickets tumbled six wickets fell in as many overs and only Gavin Griffiths at No. 10 made another double figure score.Nqazibini Sigwili’s left-arm seamers did the damage with 4 for 34 as South Africa went on to knock off the target, aided by the Duckworth-Lewis system.

England U-19 bowlers earn big lead

Oli Stone, the England Under-19 captain, took four wickets to earn his team a 119-run lead on the second day in Cape Town

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jan-2013
ScorecardOli Stone, the England Under-19 captain, took four wickets to earn his team a 119-run lead on the second day in Cape Town.Stone was not the original captain for the trip but replaced the injured Shiv Thakor last week. He did not bring himself into the attack until six other bowlers had been used, after suffering a dislocated finger in the warm-up match, but soon made an impact with two wickets in two balls removing South Africa’s top-scorer, Murray Coetzee (50), and Vassilli Orros as the home side slipped to 120 for 5.He claimed two further wickets to complete an efficient display by England who had earlier extended their first innings to 313. Ed Barnard, who scored a century on the opening day, was only able to add seven to his overnight score before being bowled sweeping.South Africa made a solid start in reply before Harry Finch, a 17-year-old from Sussex, had Andries Gous and Shaylin Pillay caught behind in quick succession. A partnership of 60 between Coetzee and Diego Rosier, the captain, followed to leave the game evenly balance but Miles Hammond had Rosier lbw to start the collapse.

Batsmen Anamul Haque and Mominul Haque, who also debuted during this tour, have made the squad too.The fourth among Bangladesh’s debutants, Abul Hasan, who scored a century from No. 10 in the Khulna Test, is the only newcomer to miss out: he is yet to recover from the side strain he suffered in the second ODI in Khulna. The injured Shakib Al Hasan, who was advised six weeks rest due to a shin injury, expectedly wasn’t picked.Batsmen Mohammad Ashraful and Junaid Siddique, and allrounder Farhad Reza, who were part of the squad that played the World Twenty20, were not named in this squad. This year, Bangladesh played their most Twenty20s, winning four out of eight games. Starc lifted by 'heart and soul' Siddle

Peter Siddle is taking on the mantle of leadership and example among Australia’s bowlers that – until recently – Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey held for the batsmen.Mitchell Starc attributed his much improved display on the final day of the Hobart Test against Sri Lanka to being lifted by Siddle’s efforts, which matched his Herculean display against South Africa in Adelaide.A prodigious talent, Starc is pleasing Australia’s selectors, coaches and the captain Michael Clarke by gathering in consistency and nous each time he bowls in a Test, and also by staying fit when so many around him are falling prey to injury. His fiendish burst of reverse swing on an uneven final day surface at Bellerive Oval was arguably Starc’s best display to for his country to date, and he put much of it down to watching Siddle give his all in the spell that preceded it.”Sidds was outstanding again in Hobart and was pretty much the heart and soul of the attack,” Starc said. “For me just to follow on from him, I played pretty much a supporting role with Sidds there probably deserving 10 wickets. Not just the bowlers [are lifted by Siddle], the whole team is.”Having him around the squad he’s full of energy and he’s always giving 100% whether it be in the nets or in the field and that drags the whole squad along. As he’s shown in Adelaide, though unfortunately not getting over the line there, but again in Hobart pretty similar performances where he’s given absolutely everything he’s had. He’s sat down and had nothing left after the game. It was great for him we got that result after what happened in Adelaide.”When you have guys like Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey in the squad they bring so much energy and a different feel to the group. I think Sidds is well on the way to being someone like that, who just lifts everyone up. When he’s on bowling you know something most likely is going to happen.”Starc’s progress has been helped greatly by his developing durability, which has allowed him to be fit for selection whenever Australia’s selectors have come calling over the past 12 months. By avoiding the treatment table, Starc is gathering in knowledge about his bowling, aided by advice from the likes of Wasim Akram, Jason Gillespie and the Australian bowling coaches past and present, Craig McDermott and Ali de Winter.”That consistency is coming. I’ve got to find that balance between being over aggressive and containing one end. That will come, I’m still learning, I’m only 22,” Starc said. “I’m taking it all in my stride and learning from each game. That’s something we did from the game in Perth – I went for a few runs there.”In Hobart we had 450 runs on the board so you can afford to be a bit aggressive there. As you saw I went for a couple of runs but we got the win in the end so we can take some confidence from that and being able to get that result even with a bowler down as well.”Injuries are unfortunate, they seem to go hand in hand with fast bowling. I’m looking after myself doing all I can to stay on the park and make sure I’m recovering well and playing well. You can’t worry too much about what the other guys are doing. Can’t worry too much about what the others are doing but we’re all preparing the way we can and stay on the park.”Despite his strong last-day form in Hobart, Starc may yet find himself carrying the drinks on Boxing Day in order to ensure he maintains his run of games without injury, the better to be fit for his home Test at the SCG from January 3. Mitchell Johnson and Jackson Bird are both a chance of being called into the Test side for the final match of 2012. However Starc is eager to bowl at the MCG, having also run the drinks in the corresponding match last year.”It’s always a big occasion the Boxing Day Test. If I get the nod to play for Australia again it’s going to be a nice one to run out in front of a big crowd,” Starc said. “Hopefully I can contribute again if I get the chance in Melbourne.”

O treinador terá toda a condição. O Abel é mais que vivido e experiente, vai desenvolver o seu melhor. É uma grande pessoa, tem leitura rápida e vai saber extrair rápido de qualquer jogador – finalizou Dorival Júnior ao “Fox Sports”.

Ponting ponders life of leisure

A week into his retirement, Ricky Ponting is already developing a taste for life after cricket.Ponting admitted he quite enjoyed getting to a Test match right on the appointed 10.30am start time rather than two hours before, and that he was not exactly sorry to be missing training for the Hobart Hurricanes in Melbourne. This was in order to be conveyed around Bellerive Oval in the back of a ute as a way of saying thankyou to the Tasmanian cricket faithful, who numbered 6,221 on the first day of the first Test against Sri Lanka. The question of Ponting’s life after Test matches has been pondered by many in the wake of his emotional exit at the conclusion of the South Africa series, and the man himself is wondering aloud at how the pull of participating in the game will be diminished by the lack of Australian duty to sustain him.”I’ll see how I feel about cricket at the end of this season,” Ponting told Channel Nine. “It might be a little harder for me I reckon, playing those last few games out, knowing there’s not the bigger picture in mind as there’s always been for me when I’ve played state cricket, which is to play for Australia.”While Cricket Australia and the national captain Michael Clarke are equally keen to have Ponting still involved with the team in a coaching or mentoring capacity, the attraction of a lucrative and far less stressful role as a television commentator has its appeal.”I’d like to work in the media at some stage, at some time, in some way, shape or form,” Ponting said. “Just being around cricket for as long as I have and being part of successful teams, I think I’ve got a pretty good knowledge of the game and I’m pretty insightful on the game I think. So we’ll wait and see what happens.”Ponting was memorably granted a guard of honour by South Africa’s captain Graeme Smith at the WACA ground as he commenced his final innings, and in Hobart he and his family were flanked by the ranks of cricketers from his home club of Mowbray in Launceston before starting on his valedictory lap of the oval.”As we all know things came to an end for me last week, so to be here in a different capacity today is good fun,” Ponting said. “I’m excited about this next little phase of my life, all my family here and a lot of my club-mates have even made it down for the game – they probably bought all their tickets weeks ago thinking I was going to be playing, but unfortunately I’m here as a spectator with them today.”I generally get a little bit embarrassed when people start talking about me, and even having a whole lunch break in a Test match dedicated to me today is a little bit more than what I would have expected as well. But the reason it’s here is for me to come and say goodbye to the Hobart fans and people of Tasmania who have looked after me so well over a long period of time.”As for those final moments in Perth, particularly his opponents’ spontaneous gestures of thanks for a career spanning 17 years and innumerable achievements, Ponting said they would not soon be forgotten. “That is something I’ll never, ever forget,” he said. “When I pulled Graeme Smith out of the line and shook his hand I said ‘I really appreciate this’ and he said ‘no, you deserve it, but just make sure you don’t get too many against us today’.”I thought all the running around that was happening after I got out was just them celebrating the wicket, but they were actually running over to try to shake my hand and say congratulations on my career. Robin Peterson got me out and actually apologised, he said ‘I’m sorry about that’.”So there were a couple of things that took me by surprise, the guard of honour and then all of them running to me on the way off. I got 10 metres from the gate and realised I hadn’t said goodbye to the crowd either, so I had to take my helmet off, and do all that stuff, and make sure that I acknowledged my family, and everyone there as well. A lot of those are memories I’ll never forget.”Before Ponting thinks about whether he might play another season, he has the BBL to negotiate, flying to join the Hurricanes ahead of their date with Shane Warne’s Melbourne Stars on Saturday. But the enthusiasm that has always been there for any game of cricket is quickly being tested by the more leisurely life. “I’m actually missing a training session so it’s not that bad,” Ponting said. “The boys are over in Melbourne training at the moment, so I’d rather be here I think.”

– É um projeto ambicioso, novo, me deixou feliz.

Deccan Chargers reject sole bid for franchise

The auction for the IPL Deccan Chargers franchise on Thursday has ended in an anti-climax with the team’s owners receiving one bid, which they have rejected

Deccan Chargers’ future is still up in the air•AFP

The auction for the IPL Deccan Chargers franchise on Thursday has ended in an anti-climax with the team’s owners rejecting the sole bid they received. This leaves the franchise’s future up in the air, with the BCCI ‘s working committee meeting on Saturday likely to take a decision on its next course of action. The solitary bid reportedly came from PVP Ventures, a company that finances film projects in India. No details were made public but reports said the offer was for Rs 900 crore ($164 million). Only three bidders had evinced interest to buy the Chargers: besides PVP Ventures, RPG Group and Jaypee Group also bought the bid document. However on the day of the auction only PVP turned up.*”They [the franchise] informed us that the price and terms were not suitable so they did not accept it,” BCCI president N Srinivasan said in Chennai. “The BCCI assisted the Deccan Chargers and we also looked at the eligibility criteria, whether they were fit and proper. We found that the party was acceptable to us. After that, though, it was between Deccan Chargers and the bidder.”Today’s development puts the ball squarely back with the BCCI, which could conceivably terminate the agreement with Chargers and put the players on the auction block. Though no decision has formally been taken, it is understood that the board has lost patience with Deccan Chronicles Holdings Limited (DCHL). Its plan for the way forward could include terminating the contract with Chargers and floating a tender to add a new team to the IPL. There would be a shortlist of cities for the bidders to choose from, with the location of the new franchise to be decided by the highest bid for one of those cities.”DCHL have been been found out for various violations,” a board official told ESPNcricinfo. “The BCCI tried to pitch in and help but that has not proved useful. The board needs to protect the IPL model and a new franchise can only enhance the IPL.”If the board does scrap Chargers’ contract then it will encash the bank guarantee of the franchise to settle the dues of the players. Most players and coaching staff are reportedly yet to receive 85% of their contracted amount.A positive outcome today could have changed that but it is understood that while DCHL were happy to go with the offer, the company’s lending banks, rejected it. “The lenders [banks] and the owner [DCHL] could not come to an agreement over the mode of payment proposed by the bidder,” the official said. The official said the banks were not happy with PVP’s plan to divide the bid amount in two parts over the next ten years. “They said they would pay Rs 450 crores ($82 million) in the next five years, at the rate of 90 crore per annum, and the rest in 2022,” the official said. The banks’ reluctance, the official said, could stem from the fact that they stood to receive the sale proceeds – which, in this case, would be staggered.Last month, the banks had knocked on the BCCI’s doors to help them out, after which the board had set a deadline of September 15 for Chargers to clear all their dues including player payments and report with a clean slate. However, DCHL said they were unable to sort out the problems and, after seeking the board’s intervention, placed an advertisement announcing that the franchise was for sale. The board official said that Chargers still had two days’ time to figure out their final decision: “The [BCCI] decision could depend on what the Chargers report on Saturday.”Thursday’s development is a harsh reality check for the IPL, whose valuations across several properties and deals had brought the BCCI, its owners, more than $2 billion. Mumbai Indians were the costliest franchise at $111.9 million in the first team auction in 2008, with Chargers third at $107 million; just two years later, the Sahara group successfully bid $370m for Pune Warriors while the Kochi franchise, now dissolved, fetched $333 million. Now, however, franchises are experiencing operational difficulties vis-à-vis the IPL. Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore have delayed payments to their players; some franchises with multiple owners are reported to be looking at selling stakes to raise funds.* September 13, 19.30 GMT This story has been updated with the details of potential bidders

Farhad Reza named in Bangladesh squad for World T20

Farhad Reza, a pace-bowling allrounder, is the only new inclusion in an otherwise settled 15-member Bangladesh squad for the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka

Farhad Reza has been picked for the World T20•AFP

Farhad Reza, a pace-bowling allrounder, is the only change in an otherwise settled 15-member Bangladesh squad for the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. Farhad replaced Nazmul Hossain in the team that will also be touring Trinidad and Tobago in early September for a four-nation tournament, though it will play under the name of Bangladesh Cricket Board XI.Chief selector Akram Khan said Farhad’s all-round abilities led him to be picked. “We said ahead of the Zimbabwe tour [in June] that 90% of the team would be the same,” Akram told ESPNcricinfo. “We made one change to the squad that toured Europe by bringing in Farhad [Reza] in place of Nazmul [Hossain]. Farhad gives us a batting option down the order apart along with his role as a seamer.”Nazmul went wicketless in the two games he played during Bangladesh’s tour of Europe last month. Abul Hasan, who also didn’t pick a wicket in Ireland and the Netherlands, was preferred due to his extra pace. Farhad could have been chosen as a backup for Ziaur Rahman as it is unlikely for the team management to pick more than two seamers in Sri Lanka.Bangladesh toured Zimbabwe in June and Europe in July and played ten matches against Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands, giving the selectors ample opportunity to assess the T20 side. They picked new faces like Ziaur, Hasan and Anamul Haque while the team management also experimented with the batting order.Ziaur, who bowls fast-medium, was promising with his ability to play as a big-hitting floater in the middle order, as he showed during a quickfire 40 against Ireland. Mohammad Ashraful’s strike-rate – 91.20 in four matches in Europe – remains a worry but he did score enough runs to convince the selectors to retain him as an opener alongside Tamim Iqbal.Bangladesh squad for World Twenty20

Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), Mahmudullah, Tamim Iqbal, Mohammad Ashraful, Junaid Siddique, Jahurul Islam, Shakib Al Hasan, Nasir Hossain, Ziaur Rahman, Elias Sunny, Abdur Razzak, Mashrafe Mortaza, Shafiul Islam, Farhad Reza, Abul Hasan.

Bangladesh’s fortunes will depend heavily on Shakib Al Hasan, who will continue to bat at No. 3 as he had done during the Europe tour. Shakib is currently recovering from a knee injury that sidelined him from the SLPL. He has started bowling in the nets and will be working closely with Saqlain Mushtaq, who has joined the Bangladesh coaching staff for four months as the spin-bowling consultant.Left-arm spinner Elias Sunny will be facing his first major Twenty20 challenge, having made a record-breaking debut against Ireland last month while Mashrafe Mortaza will have a key role to play as the most experienced seamer in the bowling attack.Bangladesh will take on New Zealand on September 21 before meeting Pakistan on September 25. Both matches will be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
