Mark Taylor believes restoring Shane Watson to the opening position and shifting David Warner down to No.5 or 6 could be the formula Australia need to post challenging totals on the upcoming Ashes tour. The Australians are preparing to depart for England this weekend ahead of the Champions Trophy and Ashes campaign and after their disastrous series in India in February and March, there remain plenty of questions about the make-up of their batting line-up.Chief among those is how to structure the top order given that the squad includes five potential opening batsmen: Watson, Warner, Ed Cowan, Chris Rogers and Phillip Hughes. Cowan and Warner are the incumbent openers but neither man has made himself untouchable and the inclusion of the veteran state and county batsman Rogers, who has nearly 20,000 first-class runs to his name, has raised the possibility of a shake-up to the top three. There is also the matter of how to get the best out of Watson, who in the past two years has averaged 24.11 in Tests while batting anywhere from the opening position to No.5. Overall, Watson’s average as a Test opener is a more robust 43.06 and Taylor, the former Test captain and opener who will be covering part of the Ashes as a commentator, believes the warm-up matches in Somerset and Worcestershire before the first Test will be telling.”I think what they’ll do is they’ll use the first couple of county games to decide who is going to open the batting,” Taylor told . “I think Chris Rogers is right in the frame to open the batting. If I was a selector I would be looking at having Shane Watson as an opener as well. Shane Watson to me has been struggling now for 18 months or maybe two years. I think one of the reasons he’s struggling is he’s not really sure where he should play.”If you look at his record, he plays his best opening the batting. Every time he bats down at four, five or six and tries to be a bowler also, he doesn’t bat anywhere near as well as he should. That really hurts Australia because he is one of Australia’s best batsmen. I would be thinking very seriously about playing Shane Watson where he plays the best, which is opening the batting.”I think he’s going to open with Warner, or he’s going to open with Cowan or Rogers. The problem with opening with Warner is then you haven’t really got the explosive player to play down the order at five or six. I wouldn’t be surprised if they open with Watson and someone like Cowan or Rogers – I think they’ll be vying for one spot, I don’t think both of them can play, they’re too similar in the way they play – and I think Dave Warner is a chance of batting down the order, he may bat at five or six.”Although Cowan and Warner have been together at the top of the order for 18 months, the possibility of a change has rekindled memories of the 1993 Ashes tour, when Matthew Hayden and Michael Slater were competing to become Taylor’s new opening partner. Slater averaged 80.60 in the five first-class tour matches before the first Test compared to Hayden’s 35.85 and made the Test spot his own. Taylor believes a similar battle could take place this year.”I think they are going to be absolute trial games for the Australian side,” he said of the tour matches. “They won’t be just there for a bit of match practice. I think they’ll be trying to work out what is the best order for this Australian side. I think Shane Watson creates the biggest question mark for the Australian side because I think on his day he is behind Michael Clarke as our best player, but Australia have to get the most out of him in this series.”He’s no longer the vice-captain of the side so he really only has to worry about batting, bowling and fielding. That’s probably not a bad thing. I reckon the Australian hierarchy might me saying that to him, just get out there and particularly make some runs. I think Australia have got the quicks to get some wickets to win Test matches.”Even though Shane Watson’s bowling certainly is handy, it’s not what they need mostly out of him. They need runs out of Shane Watson. They need probably two players to make 500 runs in this series and I think Shane Watson can do that job. But I’m not sure he can do it batting at four or five or six when he’s also bowling.”Brad Haddin is likely to slot in at No.7, although he could also play in the top six, and his reinstatement as wicketkeeper and vice-captain at the age of 35 has raised questions about the lack of leadership options behind Clarke. Taylor said he believed all sports were struggling to develop leaders in the modern era, given the individual focus that players these days inclined towards.”I’m not sure [the Test captaincy] has the same lustre these days because the money is so good in the game regardless,” he said. “Players are more focused on themselves and playing for their future, playing as a career. I think sometimes they don’t look at leadership like they used to 10 or 15 years ago.”

Aaron seeks match fitness ahead of Ranji season

Varun Aaron, who has been sidelined with injury for the last 15 months, is eyeing a comeback into the national side

India fast bowler Varun Aaron, whose career has been plagued with injuries, is working towards attaining match fitness in time for the Ranji Trophy with a “slight adjustment” to his bowling action. He hopes the tweak will help him last the entire domestic season.Aaron has been an almost permanent fixture at the National Cricket Academy ever since he was withdrawn from India’s squad for the Test series in Australia in 2011-12. Though he returned for a short stint during IPL 2012 where he featured in eight games for Delhi Daredevils, he suffered a recurrence of a back injury. As a result, the Jharkhand bowler, who keeps ferrying between Bangalore and Pune, where his family is now based, hasn’t played a competitive game for more than 15 months. Still, he had a wide smile on his face on Thursday.”The injury has started healing now. I have started bowling again,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “Obviously it would take me a little time to start bowling at full throttle, but I have been trying to build on pace slowly as I progress.”Aaron has had a frustrating last year. Owing to the injuries, Aaron hasn’t had a first-class outing since his Test debut in November 2011, and when the recurrence of his back injury was noticed in July 2012, he, along with the physios at the NCA, had expected the wound to heal in about four months. However, in November, it was found that the wound had been infected.”I consulted a surgeon in England who advised me that surgery was the best option and we went ahead with it in March. Since then, my back has held up pretty well. I would be naive to say that I am not frustrated. It’s been quite disappointing to have been out of action for so long but I am positive that the worst is behind me and once I get back on to the field, I am sure I would be able to enjoy my cricket even more.”Aaron has not thought about cutting down on pace, his key weapon, but he has made a slight modification to his bowling action for which he credits Bharat Arun, NCA’s outgoing head of bowling unit, and V Venkatram, who was relieved of his duties as bowling coach earlier in the year.”I would call it a minor adjustment. They suggested I should open up my landing foot while bowling, and it has really helped.”When Aaron rose through the ranks, he and Umesh Yadav were marked as the potential leaders of India’s pace attack. However, Aaron’s injury setbacks have meant he has lagged way behind in the race for sealing a bowling spot. In fact, he realises he has to start from scratch if he is to make a case for being selected again. But selection is the last thing on his mind for now.”All that I am thinking about is to be fully fit. The Ranji Trophy season starts in the last week of October and I am hoping to be fit in time for our (Jharkhand¹s) first match,” Aaron said. “The next objective would be to remain injury-free for the entire domestic season and then we will take it from there.”A fit Aaron will give more options to the selectors for India’s tough year ahead. With tours to South Africa, New Zealand and England lined up in the next seven months, the team’s pacers are likely to be stretched to their fullest. If Aaron can indeed last the full domestic season, one would not be surprised if he is part of the tours to either New Zealand or South Africa. As three of India’s pace bowlers - Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar – have been going through the paces in what is their routine fitness assessment at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, they would be heartened to see the manner in which Aaron is shaping up for having a crack towards regaining his spot in the national team.

Tampering allegations 'unacceptable' – Bopara

Ravi Bopara has described Bob Willis’s accusation of ball-tampering by England during the Champions Trophy as “annoying, sad and depressing”

Ravi Bopara has described Bob Willis’ accusations of ball-tampering by England during the Champions Trophy as “annoying, sad and depressing”.Willis, the former England captain, claimed England had been scratching the ball to promote reverse-swing during their defeat to Sri Lanka at The Oval. The England coach, Ashley Giles, issued a firm denial at the time and now Bopara has also rubbished the allegation.”We were doing well in that tournament and I felt it was unacceptable to make that sort of noise,” Bopara told the “It was annoying, sad and depressing, especially in the middle of a global competition.”When England are doing well, why does something negative have to come from it? Why not just get on the wave with England and enjoy it?”Willis, as a pundit on Sky Sports, claimed that an unnamed England player was scratching the ball after it was changed during the group match defeat to Sri Lanka at The Oval – officially because it had gone out of shape. Willis said umpire Aleem Dar was “on England’s case” after Dar and his colleague Billy Bowden had initiated a ball change that England appeared unhappy with.Bopara was often responsible for looking after the condition of the ball, so an allegation of tampering could be regarded as a personal slight. But the ICC saw no reason in the umpire’s report of the match for any investigation.England found great success with reverse swing during their victory over Australia at Edgbaston – which George Bailey said he had been “very surprised” at – but struggled without any reverse movement against Sri Lanka. It was conventional swing that aided them in victories over New Zealand at Cardiff and in the semi-final against South Africa.”We’ve learned over the last 12-18 months that we need to look after the white ball as well as we do the red ball,” Bopara said. “We discussed as a team how we were going to shine it. You have to look after them to make them ‘talk’.”You want that seam to be standing up as long as possible; you want one side to be very smooth, which helps with lateral movement. If you can make the red ball swing, you should be able to do the same with the white one.”

Peaking at the right time?

New Zealand have been one of the usual suspects at the knockout stages of ICC events. Despite continued troubles in the Test form, that trend might just continue

The Champions Trophy has been good for New Zealand. In 2000, when it was still the ICC Knockout, with a view to the funds helping the developing cricket nations, Chris Cairns hit an unbeaten century in Nairobi to lead them to their only piece of global silverware. They have come close many times since – quarter and semi-finals are a regular place to find New Zealand in global events – and their surge of form ahead of the tournament has belied their No. 8 ranking. All of a sudden the problems in red-ball cricket have been shed. In a competition as short and sharp as the Champions Trophy, hitting form at the right time is key. New Zealand will just hope they haven’t peaked early.Their recent performances against England have reinforced the feeling that New Zealand’s slump in one-day cricket before this year had been more surprising than their struggles in Tests. For a format that has often been the lifeblood of New Zealand there have been precious few successes. Before the impressive 2-1 series win in South Africa earlier this year it had been a barren run in ODIs. Since losing the World Cup quarter-final against Sri Lanka in March 2011 they have won just four matches (until the tour of England) against sides excluding Bangladesh and Zimbabwe and even before that their form was far from flash with a run of 11 defeats in a row including a series loss to Bangladesh. There are signs that under Brendon McCullum and Mike Hesson, New Zealand have gone back a few generations with the structure of their one-day team. Experienced players, whose careers may have been finished, notably Grant Elliott and James Franklin, have been given another chance while they are trying to nurse Daniel Vettori back although that is proving problematic. With a strong seam attack and a middle-order featuring McCullum, Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson, plus the career-high form of Martin Guptill, they have the basis for a competitive team. And, really, it would not be a global event without New Zealand in the semi-finals.Key playerThere were signs during the Test series against England that Ross Taylor was regaining somewhere near his best form with an aggressive half-century at Lord’s and a rearguard effort at Headingley and he grew increasingly fluent in the ODIs which followed. Despite an improvement in the weather, and some flatter pitches, the Champions Trophy is unlikely to be a walk in the park for top-orders so Taylor’s role will be two-fold: lay a base for the likes of McCullum below him but also be there himself to take advantage of the last 10 overs.Surprise packageNew Zealand are not short of left-arm pace bowlers. Mitchell McClenaghan has so far been used exclusively in the one-day formats – and with some success. He impressed in South Africa and it was a significant blow when he was injured during England’s visit in March. On his return he has been used in a very attacking manner by Brendon McCullum, recalled to target key players in the opposition middle order. He doesn’t take a backward step and doesn’t mind a few words, either.WeaknessNew Zealand will cross their fingers that the Champions Trophy marks the arrival of the British summer. When the ball doesn’t move their top order is far more comfortable. Swinging conditions could still be their undoing. Although batsmen can get away with a few more edges in one-day cricket and bowlers’ spells are rationed, losing early wickets on a regular basis would leave the middle-order a lot of rebuilding to do.Champions Trophy historyWinners in 2000, New Zealand reached the final last time this tournament was staged during 2009 in South Africa where they lost by six wickets to Australia. Six of the team from that match are in this year’s squad. In 2006-07 they also came unstuck against their neighbours, this time in the semi-final, but the last time the competition was in England in 2004 they didn’t make the last four – again due to defeat against Australia.Recent formSigns of improvement. The series win in South Africa was an outstanding effort, especially after the humbling in the Tests, but conceding the series against England at home, despite having won the opening game, was a missed opportunity for them. Their response in the recent NatWest Series, though, was emphatic and bodes well for the weeks ahead.

PCB bans 'one-sided' – Ghauri

Nadeem Ghauri, the banned Pakistan umpire, has criticised the PCB’s decision as “one-sided”

Umar Farooq14-Apr-2013

Nadeem Ghauri speaks to the press in Lahore•Associated Press

Nadeem Ghauri, the Pakistan umpire banned for four years by the PCB, has criticised the board’s decision as “one-sided”. Ghauri was punished after the PCB’s integrity committee found him guilty of being willing to accept money for favourable umpiring decisions. The allegations against him, Ghauri said, were baseless. They surfaced during a television sting operation, broadcast by , last year, which claimed to have “exposed” several first-class umpires from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan who were allegedly willing to give decisions favouring players for a fee. Ghauri and his umpiring colleague Anis Siddiqui were banned for four and three years respectively by the PCB’s integrity committee.”It’s a one-sided decision and I am not happy with it,” Ghauri said during a press conference at his residence. “I didn’t compromise my integrity and didn’t even enter any deal with them but still they have slapped me with this ban. They [PCB] didn’t give me a chance to [explain] my version properly. I will request the chairman and will appeal that I should get justice.””I don’t think it’s true,” Ghauri said of the claims made by the sting operation. “I was actually referred by Nadir Shah (a Bangladesh umpire) with regard to a cricket league in Sri Lanka. They were offering me a lucrative package for umpiring and I brought everything to PCB’s notice.”I was not under any contract with the PCB and we were trying to make some money through these leagues for livelihood without knowing that I am actually being trapped.”Both umpires, as a result of the bans, cannot officiate in any form of cricket and will not be considered for any role in Pakistan’s regional associations. The bans took effect on October 11, 2012, the day the PCB began its investigation.Ghauri, 50, played one Test, against Australia in Sydney in 1990. He also played six ODIs and 147 first-class games. He was part of the ICC’s Elite Panel of Umpires and the PCB’s international panel in an umpiring career that spanned 13 years. “I have 10 clean years between 2000 and 2010, before being demoted from the ICC panel,” said Ghauri, who was also among the injured during the terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore in 2009. “I have served my life for Pakistan and the PCB should have taken my past into account before making the judgement.”I am waiting for the documents. I will send an appeal to the chairman and will ask him to show me the videos, there should not be a one-sided decision,” Ghauri said, adding that, during the sting operation, he was only sharing his experience as an umpire over Skype.”And in two minutes you can’t compromise your integrity. They trapped us by offering a contract in the Sri Lankan league. This league did happen but their own umpires supervised it in Sri Lanka.”
