How to spend Liverpool’s millions this January

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers could be forgiven for already counting the days until the January transfer window opens after his side’s reliance on youth in the early stages of this season and the somewhat threadbare nature of his first-team squad, but with resources tight, where will he need to focus his attentions the most?

The 39-year-old has spoken of ‘operational issues’ hindering him in the past, with a clear and knowing nod to the way that the club managed to somehow let Andy Carroll leave on loan in the final few days of the transfer window without a guaranteed replacement lined-up, with Ian Ayre unable to negotiate successfully for either Daniel Sturridge or Clint Dempsey.

Indeed, Rodgers has even spoken this week about the need for reinvestment when the earliest opportunity presents itself, telling The Daily Mail: “There are still areas we want to reinforce — and we have to reinforce as soon as we can. Our best team are comparable to any team in the Premier League. But we’re a very thin squad and we are having to challenge on a lot of fronts. I’ve had good conversations with the owners and they understand where we are at as a team.”

In light of Fabio Borini’s recent fractured foot injury that he suffered while on international duty with Italy’s U-21 side, it only served to compound their transfer failings in recent times, despite the lack of clarity over whether he is best utilised in a wide or central role. As a result, Rodgers looks extremely short on numbers up top, with the burden now falling even heavier on Luis Suarez to perform and provide a consistent stream of goals.

The only other options available aside from the controversial Uruguayan are youth-team players Samed Yesil, Adam Morgan and Daniel Pacheco and none of them can be relied upon to provide ample support to Suarez just yet, with Pacheco in particular in danger of missing the boat completely in terms of his ability to be a relied upon member of the squad.

It becomes clear that despite the midfield weighing in well with their fair share of goals so far, that Liverpool are going to require first and foremost another striker in the transfer window, with Demba Ba and Gary Hooper the latest names rather understandably linked with a move to Anfield in recent days. No other position in the squad offers the same paucity of options and dearth of recognised and established talent and Rodgers may even exercise the call-back option on Carroll’s loan move to West Ham if nothing else materialises.

In midfield, the likes of Gerrard, Sahin, Allen, Henderson, Shelvey and Lucas when he returns from injury provides a more than healthy competition for places, with each player showing a run of form at some point this season and even with the side playing three in the middle of the park, the squad would seem to be well set there.

Next up on the agenda may be another winger and while talk of moving for someone such as Cristian Eriksen may be fanciful at this point, it’s clear that Stewart Downing’s future is in doubt at the moment after a very public falling-out with Rodgers and Sterling and Suso, by virtue of their age and inexperience, along with Assaidi in his first year in England, are going to require some support further down the line.

The recent links to Angelo Ogbonna and Diego Lugano are also completely understandable, with Daniel Agger playing injured at the moment and the jury still out on whether Jamie Carragher can force his way into Rodgers Premier League plans. Quite where this leaves Danny Wilson at the moment remains to be seen, but the presence of the burly Micah Richards mark 2 that is Andre Wisdom means that this can be seen as less urgent for the time being at least.

Finally, Jack Robinson’s run-outs at full-back in the Europa League so far this season have been hugely promising, as has Wisdom’s elevation into the first-team, with Glen Johnson a versatile option, but Jose Enrique’s slump has now become the norm and he could be moved on if a replacement is found, while Martin Kelly is still a long-term casualty.

Liverpool’s squad is full of promise and potential for the future but there’s a suspicion that just a few more injuries during the busy festive period, where the fixtures pile up every year, could leave Rodgers extremely short in several key areas, namely up front and out wide, while more depth at full-back would also be understandable. With the side still competing on four fronts, proven experience is the order of the hour, but whether he’ll be given the budget to bring the quality that’s required into the club is another matter entirely.

Realistically, who would you like to see Brendan Rodgers bring into the club in January? In your opinion, where do Liverpool need to strengthen most?

Tottenham Hotspur fans full of love for Kane despite Golden Boot failure

In the early stages of the season, it was difficult to see anyone other than Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane taking home the Premier League Golden Boot.

The England international has been scintillating in front of goal, and was on course to claim his third consecutive individual award.

However, Liverpool star Mohamed Salah found shooting boots of his own and ended up securing the gong with a two-goal advantage.

The race for the award was taken to the final day of the season, and Kane managed to add two strikes to his tally in a dramatic 5-4 victory over Leicester City.

The 24-year-old ended the campaign with 30 goals in the top flight, which is an improvement on his previous two seasons.

However, Salah recorded 32 by netting in Liverpool’s 4-0 romp over Brighton at Anfield on Sunday.

In the end, Tottenham closed the 2017-18 season without a trophy, but they did grab third place and qualification for the Champions League.

Unsurprisingly, Liverpool fans have been quick to poke fun at Kane, who has scored 41 goals and registered four assists in all competitions, but he received plenty of support from Spurs fans on Twitter.

Transfer Triangles: Will Ramsey replace Milinkovic-Savic at Lazio?

In a World Cup summer where the transfer deadline for English clubs has been brought forward to before the start of the season, getting deals over the line at the right price is going to be tougher than ever.

Unai Emery is charged with guiding Arsenal to success in the post-Wenger era in North London, while Jose Mourinho is under pressure to construct a genuine Premier League title charge and emerge from the shadow of Pep Guardiola in Manchester.

Reports have emerged of a transfer deal that could impact the summer plans of both men; Serbian star  Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is still on the radar of the Red Devils and Lazio have reportedly lined up one of Emery’s key men as a replacement.

That’s why Football FanCast have decided to look at the potential transfer triangle that could spring from the deal that The Manchester Evening News report, via Corriere Dello Sport would cost in the region of £90m…

What do you think of the World Cup so far? Let us know and win any World Cup shirt of your choice.

Milinkovic-Savic finally joins United

Milinkovic-Savic has been linked with United for the better part of a year so it is not a shock to see fresh reports.

It would mean that Jose Mourinho has finally bitten the bullet and told Ed Woodward to get the expensive deal over the line on the back of a World Cup that has seen the Serbian impress on the global stage.

The summer arrival of Fred and expected last-ditch retention of Marouane Fellaini dampen the urgency of United’s need for reinforcements in midfield, so it would be a small shock if Jose went big for yet another face in the engine room, certainly while Paul Pogba is knocking around as well.

Ramsey leaves Arsenal to replace him at Lazio

The report also says that the man that the Italian giants have lined up to replace Milinkovic-Savic if he leaves for big money is Arsenal’s Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

Amid uncertainty over the former Cardiff man’s willingness to commit to the Gunners, Emery has reportedly offered him a new contract as he wishes to build his Arsenal midfield around him.

Therefore, losing Ramsey would be a major blow to his hopes of overseeing instant improvement at the Emirates but it would be mitigated to some degree if a substantial chunk of the £90m United paid indirectly swelled the budget at Arsenal.

Arsenal sign Ever Banega

Ever Banega has been linked with a reunion with Emery at the Emirates and was outstanding on his introduction a toiling Argentina side as they scraped through into the World Cup last 16 with a 2-1 win over Nigeria.

At 29, he would be a slight indulgence as he has no resale value but if Emery is armed with a war chest after receiving a big-money bid for Ramsey, then the deal may get over the line.

He would offer more subtlety and guile than Ramsey, who is an impressive goalscorer but does not have a natural position in Emery’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system, especially with Mesut Ozil the outstanding candidate to be the number 10.

THREE ins and THREE outs to return Man United to their former glories

There may be only three days of the transfer window remaining but Manchester United’s squad still requires drastic changes if they’re to effectively compete for a top four spot in the Premier League this season. The deadwood is still stockpiled as high as the ceiling at Old Trafford and despite already spending £131million on new recruits this summer, several prime transfer targets are yet to arrive. So with action required on both the inward and outward fronts, being the lovely bunch we are at Football Fancast, here’s a list of THREE ins and THREE outs Manchester United must make to return the club to it’s former glories.

OUT – TOM CLEVERLEY

Tom Cleverley has had to bear the brunt of the Manchester United fans’ wrath but the dissatisfaction is largely justified.

Once dubbed the next Paul Scholes, the 25 year-old has spent the last two years closer resembling Nicky Butt, and even that’s a pretty kind appraisal compared to what you can find online – the petition to ban him from England duty at the World Cup for example.

Roy Hodgson condemned the petition but eventually agreed with public opinion, excluding Cleverley from his Three Lions squad for the tournament in Brazil. Indeed, the midfielder’s contribution over the last two seasons – especially in terms of output – has been minimal, as shown in the stats below:

The Carrington product’s limited quality has come to epitomise Manchester United’s intrinsic flaws in the middle of the park and their failed recruitment in that department over the last five years.

Most United fans want him gone, and with just a year left on his current contract, that’s now looking increasingly likely. Aston Villa and – rather surprisingly – Valencia, (yes, Valencia) have emerged as potential suitors:

IN-ARTURO VIDAL

Of course, if we’re talking about direct replacements for Tom Cleverley then top of the list is unquestionably Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, who Manchester United appear to be closing in on amid one of the summer’s most arduous transfer sagas:

The Chile international has emerged as arguably the world’s most compete midfielder since joining the Old Lady in 2011 through his ability to contribute in both attack and defence. Here’s a look at how he fared last season:

That regular supply of goals from the middle of the park, as well as Vidal’s dogged athleticism, will be vital for United – Tom Cleverley, Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher netted just twice collectively last season but no midfielder has bettered Vidal’s 28 goals in Serie A over the last three seasons.

Here’s a look at the 26 year-old in action:

//www.youtube.com/embed/r8iKLIacxxw?rel=0

Furthermore and perhaps most importantly, the South American has shot to stardom under Juve’s 3-5-2 formation, as shown below:

He also performed well in a similar system, albeit in a more advanced role, for Chile at Brazil 2014. That should make him the ideal man to help implement Louis van Gaal’s new-found 3-4-1-2 philosophy.

The midfielder is rated as highly as £50million however, and Vidal has claimed he’s ‘100% ready’ for the new season in Turin.

OUT-SHINJI KAGAWA

A multitude of Manchester United’s attacking options could be suggested here but Shinji Kagawa is the unfortunate candidate.

No doubt, the South Korea international is a talented player – he won two league titles and netted 21 times in 49 Bundesliga appearances during two years at former club Borussia Dortmund. Here’s the highlights from his Westfalen spell:

//www.youtube.com/embed/20F59R5ZZ5M?rel=0

But since moving to Old Trafford in summer 2012, the 25 year-old has continually struggled to find a place for himself in the United squad. He’ll never beat Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney to the No.10 spot, has tried and failed to produce out wide and Louis van Gaal saw fit to pick the slender-built Adnan Januzaj over him in central midfield against Sunderland.

At this point he’s become more valuable to United as a transfer commodity than as a player – Kagawa’s wage package and market worth makes him unjustifiable to simply keep on as a bit-part player.

Fortuitously, speculation this morning suggests a return to Dortmund is imminent:

IN-JUAN CUADRADO

The signing of Angel Di Maria is certainly a step in the right direction but in comparison to former title-winning United sides, the current one is desperately short of pace and natural penetration going forward.

In that regard, the best option on the market is undoubtedly Fiorentina midfielder Juan Cuadrado – a real road-runner who absolutely destroyed Serie A last season and produced strong form at the World Cup, as detailed below:

Indeed, no player at Brazil 2014 beat the Colombia international’s four assists, including this rather special knock-down to James Rodriguez:

Combining pace, athleticism, trickery and netting prowess, this goal typifies the South American:

//www.youtube.com/embed/DUlRxcSaxZo

He’s also incredibly versatile and was utilised in a plethora of positions by the Florence outfit last season:

Cuadrado’s industriousness, skill and immense athleticism, in my opinion, makes him a strong candidate for the right wing-back role in Louis van Gaal’s 3-4-1-2 formation. But the winger also offers the option of reverting back to the United gaffer’s more favoured and tested 4-3-3 system.

And there may be only a few days of the transfer window remaining but the 25 year-old refused to rule out an Old Trafford switch earlier this week:

OUT-CHRIS SMALLING

Football – Manchester United v Hull City – Barclays Premier League – Old Trafford – 13/14 – 6/5/14Chris Smalling – Manchester United Mandatory Credit: Action Images / Jason CairnduffEDITORIAL USE ONLY. Manchester United aren’t really in the position to let go of centre-backs right now. After saying goodbye to Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this summer, their only established options at the heart of defence are Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Johnny Evans and new signing Marcos Rojo, which obviously isn’t enough centre-halves to play with three-at-the-back all season.

But if one had to be jettisoned to make room for a new recruit, that defender should undoubtedly be Chris Smalling.

Despite amassing 124 appearances for United and 12 caps for England, the 24 year-old has struggled to adapt to top level since joining the Old Trafford side from Fulham in summer 2010.

As viewable below, his stats over the last few seasons are hardly awe-inspiring:

And his quality on the ball, for a professional footballer, is exceptionally poor:

But with United desperately struggling for numbers at the back and the Three Lions man currently injured, it’s unlikely Smalling will be moved on before deadline day.

IN-JAN VERTONGHEN

Why aren’t Manchester United smashing down Daniel Levy’s door, trying to work out a deal for Jan Vertonghen?

The Tottenham centre-back is one of the Premier League’s stand-out defenders and further showcased his qualities at the World Cup with Belgium, but the only rumours we’ve heard this summer are in regards to a new five-year contract, which he’s yet to officially sign.

Capable of playing at left-back or centre-back, Vertonghen would be ideal for the left side of United’s back three, offering the strength and aerial ability of a central defender but also dependable in one-on-one situations out wide.

He’s also a front-footed defender who gained his standing in England by playing out of the back and scoring goals during his first season at White Hart Lane, the vitals of which are detailed below:

Thus, he would suit the central berth in a back three perfectly too. Here’s a look at the Spurs star in action:

//www.youtube.com/embed/LVgHB_IGKpk?rel=0

The former Ajax man would significantly raise the quality and suitability of the Red Devils’ backline. But admittedly, this late in the transfer window, Tottenham would demand an unprecedented sum for their key defender.

Guyana can win the title – Guptill

Martin Guptill, the New Zealand batsman, believes his franchise Guyana Amazon Warriors can win the inaugural Caribbean Premier League. Guptill has been one of the linchpins of the Guyana batting but a broken bone in his right hand ended his stint even as his franchise prepares to take on Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel in Thursday’s semi-final.”I definitely think we can (win the title),” Guptill said. “We showed we can with our chase of a decent total against Antigua (last Saturday). We got to the last ball and we came through. The spirit is good in the camp and hopefully we can take that forward to the semi-final and hopefully the final.”Guptill and his national team-mate James Franklin have impressed for Guyana and former New Zealand captain Ross Taylor has also done decently for Trinidad & Tobago. Guptill hoped these performances would further raise the profile of New Zealand’s cricketers, although he believed they needed to play more Test cricket.”James Franklin and I have had reasonably successful tournaments. It puts us out there and hopefully people will take notice. From what I read, Sir Richard’s (Hadlee) comments were more to do with (New Zealand’s limited amount of) Test cricket than anything else and we are struggling a little in the Test game at the moment. The only way we can get better is by playing more Tests and if that can come in the next few years and we can keep developing as a team then who knows where we can go from there.”Guptill joked he was filling a dual role in the Guyana side – opening the batting and also acting as a spy in the camp, trying to pick up some inside information on West Indies players ahead of the Caribbean side’s tour of New Zealand in December. That information has included an attempt to decipher the skills of Sunil Narine, although, as Guptill admitted, trying to read the spinner has been anything but easy.”I have only faced him once in the nets and he was only bowling offspin then so I do not know what is going to happen when he comes to New Zealand at the end of the year. I have been trying to see when he bowls how he does what he does but it is pretty hard to pick it up.”
