Knight Riders' second chance to topple Super Kings

After gifting a slender two-run win to Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday, Kolkata Knight Riders have a chance to make amends at their home ground on Thursday

The Preview by Vishal Dikshit29-Apr-2015Match factsThursday, April 30, 2015
Start time 2000 local (1430 GMT)Big PictureKolkata Knight Riders, after three wins from six matches, had a strong chance to get closer to the top two teams in the table; they reduced Chennai Super Kings to 134 at their home ground, marched to 52 runs in five overs, but then took a U-turn to hand the match back to the hosts. Two points gone, Super Kings back on top, and Knight Riders lost their second match in a row.Now the same two teams move to Kolkata from Chennai, just like the BCCI power centre did so nearly two months ago. A few changes have happened already in this one-day gap. Sunil Narine’s offbreak has been banned and R Ashwin has been ruled out for two matches with a finger injury. Brad Hogg’s stellar show of 1 for 18 from four overs will subside Knight Riders’ worries, but Super Kings will have to find an able replacement for their offspinner, who finished with 2 for 5 from his two overs.Apart from the win on Tuesday, Super Kings have an upper hand with their fielding too. Either Dwayne Bravo or Faf du Plessis takes a spectacular catch every match and even Kryptonite can’t stop Brendon McCullum from flying. The Knight Riders batsmen will have to make sure they clear the boundaries to make such efforts ineffective.Form guideKolkata Knight Riders LLWWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Chennai Super Kings WWWLWWatch out for…All through the tournament Knight Riders had been relying on their pacers. On Tuesday, they dominated with the ball because of their spin attack. So what if Narine has been banned from bowling the delivery he bowls the most? Piyush Chawla stepped up in his absence as first-change and dismissed Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Bravo, conceding only 26 runs. The 44-year-old Hogg then bowled as if he had played all the matches till now and bowled a frugal spell of 1 for 18. He was playing after exactly three months.A livewire in the field, wily with his slower balls and a treat to watch for his footwork during his celebrations, Dwayne Bravo has not made much of an impact with the bat yet. Barring his 36-ball 62 against Rajasthan Royals 10 days ago, he has mostly made single-digit scores. With Faf du Plessis not fully in his element, Bravo has a good chance to step up and prove why he has been a sure starter so far.Stats and trivia Super Kings have not made any changes to their playing XI so far. Every other team has made at least three changes. That will, however, certainly change on Thursday due to Ashwin’s absence. Super Kings have successfully defended a total of 150 or less seven times in the IPL, the most for any team Gautam Gambhir has 11 IPL ducks, joint-most by any player along with Harbhajan SinghQuotes”If we win we win, if we lose we lose.”

UAE register fourth win

A round-up of Group A games in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier on November 22, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Nov-2013
ScorecardMohammad Azam top-scored with a 27-ball 36•ICCUAE moved to second place in Group A of the World T20 qualifiers with a 36-run win against Canada in Abu Dhabi. Knocks from the top and middle order and three wickets from offspinner Nasir Aziz made sure that UAE registered their fourth win from five matches.Put in to bat, UAE began well as openers Mohammad Azam and Shaiman Anwar laid a strong platform. Once they departed, Khurram Khan, Rohan Mustafa and Amjad Javed kept the scoreboard moving as they struck three boundaries each to take them past 150. However, medium-pacer Harvir Baidwan’s spell of 4 for 23 meant they could not go beyond 159.Canada lost an opener early but the second-wicket stand between Ruvindu Gunasekera and Ashish Bagai kept them on track. Bagai scored a 41-ball 43 but Canada lost two more wickets and were 36 for 3 in the ninth over. Bagai and Rizwan Cheema survived for four overs before Aziz removed Cheema and took two more wickets to dent Canada’s chances. Despite a 21-ball 30 from Damodar Daesrath, they were all out in the last over for 123.
ScorecardIreland retained their spot at the top of the Group A table as Gary Wilson’s late surge took them to a competitive total that was ably defended by Ireland’s spinners.Ireland were steady for the most part of their innings, with William Porterfield being the only top-order batsman to record a strike-rate above 100. Offspinner Frank Nsubuga ended the Ireland captain’s 17-ball stay at the crease forcing a period of consolidation. The score dipped to 82 for 3 in the 12th over when Niall O’Brien was joined by Wilson and their controlled 61-run stand lifted Ireland to 147. Wilson’s 40 came off 27 balls and included three fours and a six.Uganda replied poorly, as the loss of an early wicket became prime fodder for spinners George Dockrell and Paul Stirling. Their eight overs fetched four wickets at the cost of only 35 runs as Uganda failed to control an ever-rising required rate. Though they were not bowled out by the end of the quota of overs, they were never in a position to challenge the opposition.
ScorecardHong Kong cantered to their fifth win in six matches courtesy belligerent half-centuries from captain Jamie Atkinson and Nizakat Khan and a four-wicket haul from left-arm spinner Munir Dar as they beat United States of America by 67 runs.Hong Kong were barely hampered by a couple of early wickets as Atkinson and Nizakat piled on 118 runs for the third wicket, the only side to record two century stand in the tournament. Atkinson was top-scorer with 74 off 52 balls, with three fours and five sixes while Nizakat slammed four hits out of the park and two along the ground in his 38-ball 57. Both batsmen fell in the final over as Hong Kong finished at 169 for 4.Dar found success early as his dismissed Fahad Babar and Akeem Dodson off successive balls. Six wickets fell for 25 runs including that of the innings top-scorer K Ganesh as Dar climbed to the top of the wicket-taking charts for the tournament, though Netherlands seamer Ahsan Malik is only one wicket behind him.

PCB objects to Ajmal omission

The Pakistan Cricket Board have lodged a protest with the ICC after Saeed Ajmal, the offspinner, was left off the shortlist for the ICC Test player of the year.

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Sep-2012The Pakistan Cricket Board has lodged a protest with the ICC after Saeed Ajmal, the offspinner, was left off the shortlist for the ICC Test player of the year. He was included on the longlist for the award, and the PCB has requested a review, hoping Ajmal will be added to the shortlist.Ajmal, 34, took 72 Test wickets between August 4, 2011 and August 6, 2012 – the qualifying period for the award – including 24 at 14.70 as Pakistan swept aside England, the then No. 1 side in the world, 3-0 in January. He has climbed to No. 3 in the ICC Test bowling rankings and is the highest ranked spinner. He was also selected in the ICC Test team of the year. But despite his success, Ajmal was omitted from the four-man shortlist that features South Africa’s Hashim Amla and Vernon Philander, Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara and Australia captain Michael Clarke. The list is voted for by a 30-member panel of former players, officials and journalists and the award will be presented at a ceremony in Colombo on September 15.”During the voting period Ajmal produced some significant performances including the series against England,” a PCB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s fair to show a concern on Ajmal’s omission from the top performers and hence the PCB has written to the ICC and expect them to reconsider.”There is precedent for the ICC to add names to the list of candidates for their awards. In 2010, Graeme Swann was omitted from the longlist for the Cricketer of the Year award but after the ECB put up his case, the ICC included his name after admitting an “oversight.” Swann was then shortlisted before missing out to Sachin Tendulkar. South Africa have also taken umbrage to the list of candidates in the past, boycotting the 2009 ceremony in Johannesburg after their cricketers were overlooked for awards.

Levi, Kevin O'Brien on Pune radar

A wicketkeeper, a middle-order batsman and an allrounder top the buying list of the Pune Warriors, who have started knocking on the doors of rival franchises to explore any possible trading opportunities

Nagraj Gollapudi23-Feb-2012A wicketkeeper, a middle-order batsman and an allrounder top the buying list of the Pune Warriors, who have started knocking on the doors of rival franchises to explore any possible trading opportunities. At the moment the Warriors have to fill three slots for international players having released Australia wicketkeeper Tim Paine (injured) and bought out West Indies fast bowler Jerome Taylor’s contract. But they have only a week left before the trading window – opened specially for them in the aftermath of the truce signed by the BCCI and Sahara, who own the franchise – ends on February 29.It is understood that names such as young South Africa batsman Richard Levi and Ireland allrounder Kevin O’Brien are among the players the Warriors might consider. Levi catapulted himself into contention after he blasted the fastest T20I hundred against New Zealand on February 19. As for O’Brien, who went unsold in the IPL’s supplementary auction on February 4, insiders reveal he could still be a prospect.Tim Southee, the New Zealand fast bowler, who played last year as a replacement player for the Chennai Super Kings, could get a look-in, too, especially if Allan Donald, the Warriors’ bowling coach, backs him. Donald spent a few months as bowling consultant with New Zealand till the World Cup last year and was impressed by Southee’s aggression. The Warriors also require a wicketkeeper. Robin Uthappa did the job for them in IPL 2011 with Paine playing only two matches, one of them as a specialist batsman.Sourav Ganguly, the Warriors’ mentor and a favourite to take over the leadership reins in the absence of Yuvraj Singh, is expected to take the final call on the shortlist of players when he meets the franchise officials later this week. With a purse of $3.4 million available to them, the Warriors have no shortage of funds. If anything there are no big international players left in the market who would be available for the entire IPL season, which starts on April 4 and ends on May 27.According to a BCCI official, the Warriors could face competition from some other franchises who are on the lookout for temporary replacements. “Mumbai Indians might look for a replacement for Andrew Symonds, who retired recently,” the board official said. “It is not going to be easy for Warriors. It is not like they want someone so [they] go get him.”Meanwhile Sahara have sent a letter to the owners of the other franchises, asking them to consider their request of fielding five foreign players this season to offset the absence of Yuvraj. The BCCI had originally refused to entertain the Warriors’ request, but after negotiations, allowed Sahara to seek “consent” from the other eight franchises on the issue. Most franchises ESPNcricinfo spoke to recently were not in favour of such a move.Their stand has still not changed. “If it is five for them, then it should be five for everybody. I have spoken to five to six other franchises and they are of the same opinion,” a franchise official said. The Warriors officials have conceded that it would be hard to get a consensus among the remaining eight franchises. But the Warriors have decided to stay positive and are also interested in some players from other teams. They would be writing to the IPL to express their interest. The IPL would then contact the concerned franchises and get back to the Warriors.

ScorecardEngland Women extended their unbeaten run in T20s to 16 matches with a comfortable seven-wicket win over Pakistan at Loughborough after reducing the visitors to 87 for 7.Pakistan decided to bat first but Anya Shrubsole reduced them to 23 for 3 on her way to figures of 4 for 12 from her four overs. Nain Abidi tried to steady the innings with a 31-ball 21 but she was run out after two further cheap wickets had fallen. Marina Iqbal eventually got some impetus into the innings with three fours in her late 19 from 12 balls. But the target was swallowed up by England who won with 25 balls to spare. They had an early wobble when Qanita Jalil removed both openers but Sarah Taylor and Arran Brindle both made 31 to steer England home easily.”It was a solid start from the team today for what is a really important period for us,” player of the match Shrubsole said. “It was a good performance and we’ll be looking to build on that tomorrow, sharpen up a little in the field and look for the one and two percent that we can improve.”I was really happy with how I performed today, having missed the series against India it was good to get back out there and put in a good performance.”

Cricketer dies after blow to head

A 32-year-old former South African first-class cricketer has been killed after being struck on the side of the head

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Oct-2013A 32-year-old former South African first-class cricketer has been killed after being struck on the side of the head during a Border Cricket Board Premier League match at Alice in the Eastern Cape.Darryn Randall was taking part in a match between Old Selbornians and Fore Hare University when he took the blow while attempting a pull shot and collapsed at the crease. He was rushed to Alice Hospital but medical staff were unable to revive him. A Cricket South Africa spokesman confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that he had been wearing a helmet as all players are required to do.Mark Boucher, the former South Africa wicketkeeper, tweeted: “Thoughts and prayers go out to the Randalls! Such sad news! Darren was a special boy! Life is short guys! Live it like there’s no tomorrow!”Haroon Lorgat, the CSA chief executive, said: “This is a very sad day, indeed. I would like to convey CSA’s deepest condolences on behalf of the South African cricketing family not just to his family and friends but also to all the players, umpires, clubs and everybody else who was present at this match. CSA will be offering counselling to all those involved.”Randall represented Border, as a wicketkeeper-batsman, in four first-class matches and four List A games during 2009 as well as the various provincial youth teams while a pupil at Stirling Primary and Selborne College in East London. He had established himself as a coach where he was running a highly regarded cricket academy at Stirling Primary School. He is survived by his mother and his fiancée.In 1998 the former India Test player Raman Lamba died after being struck on the head while fielding at short leg during a domestic match in Bangladesh.

Trophy shared after second washout

A typhoon-like Johannesburg thunderstorm swept across the Wanderers Stadium five minutes before 3pm on Saturday afternoon to force the domestic one-day cup to be shared

Firdose Moonda at the Wanderers15-Dec-2012 Scorecard A typhoon-like Johannesburg thunderstorm swept across the Wanderers Stadium five minutes before 3pm on Saturday afternoon to force the domestic one-day cup to be shared. The match was being re-played after it was also rained off on Friday. The Cobras were defending Champions and the Lions were on the hunt for a first piece of silverware in five seasons, so both teams will be equally aggrieved at sharing spoils. But, they were truly split. The Lions had the upper hand in their first attempt while the Cobras were in front in the second chance. On Friday, the Lions won the toss, chose to field and reduced Cobras to 64 for 4 when play was stopped. Hardus Viljoen accounted for all four wickets. That counted for nothing because the fixture had to be restarted from scratch on Saturday. In the repeat, Cobras put Lions in to bat, with both teams having unchanged sides. Defending 242, Viljoen could not repeat the performance for Lions. Richard Levi crunched him through point in his first over to show immediate intent. He was too full to Andrew Puttick and then too short to Levi. Pumi Matshikwe also struggled to adjust his lengths and the Cobras raced to 61 after 8 overs without losing a wicket. It was only when Imran Tahir came on that the brakes were applied. Tahir had an appeal for lbw against Puttick turned down that looked close. Later in that over, he appealed again and Puttick was given out, although the second appeal appeared to be missing leg. A wicket-maiden was fine redemption for Tahir’s performance in the Adelaide Test.In his next over, Levi drove a poor ball straight to Viljoen at mid-off. Having clawed their way back, the Lions may have been keen to restart but, despite the best efforts of the groundstaff, the outfield was too wet.Earlier, Stephen Cook and Gulam Bodi took on Dale Steyn with no fear, dispatching him to the leg-side fence as soon as his deliveries strayed on to the pads. Bodi led the boundary charge and looked in imperious form until he tried to hook Johann Louw over fine leg but top-edged instead. Five balls later, Cook chopped a Rory Kleinveldt delivery onto his offstump and the Lions had to rebuild.New international Quinton de Kock had the experience of Alviro Petersen to guide him. While de Kock batted with freedom, especially on the lofted drive, Petersen showed more caution. The pair put on 68 before de Kock was caught by Robin Peterson in the covers.Neil McKenzie’s arrival in the 27th over should have signalled the Lions’ most solid period, but it turned out to be a shaky one. McKenzie had scratched his way to eight when Vernon Philander appealed for an lbw against Petersen, who tried to steal a single. McKenzie had advanced halfway when Petersen sent him back, and an accurate throw from Justin Ontong saw him run-out at the non-striker’s end. From there, the Cobras took control. They restricted the Lions to 80 runs in their last 18 overs with Philander and Kleinveldt squeezing them. Jean Symes tried to accelerate against Steyn. He sliced him to the third man boundary, pulled him through midwicket and gloved him over the keepers’ head. Steyn had the last laugh when Symes failed to move his feet to a full one and was bowled.Zander de Bruyn furthered the stagnation and only Petersen could change things. He brought up his half-century and then swung wildly only to miss. Kleinveldt hit. Aaron Phangison scored the only boundary of the last seven overs, a slog over the Kleinveldt’s head, but 241 appeared below par.

During Inter Miami's end of the year press conference, Henderson spoke on the possibility of bringing the Uruguayan stateside this winter. He admitted that the links to the club keep coming, but also addressed that he is still a Gremio player in Brazil. Him speaking on the matter gives Herons supporters a reason to be excited though, as Messi may be helping them recruit their newest striker.

Suarez and Messi played together at FC Barcelona for six years, where the Uruguayan net 198 goals for the Catalan side. The South American duo, alongside Brazilian star Neymar, formed the famed duo that haunted Europe for three years. Now, Messi is slowly recruiting his old friends in MLS, with Barca teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets already in South Beach. If Suarez were to join, he'd be the third ex-teammate to linkup with Messi in Miami.

WHAT HENDERSON SAID

“He's currently with Grêmio, so we don't want to comment on a player who's not on our roster,” Henderson said of Suárez. “He is another player that's always been linked with our team and it's great to have great players around the world connected with Inter Miami and wanting to come here.”
